I'm doing one ever 3-4 days

Bob
@DragonLord You are aware SO gets many times the volume of SU, and often far more basic questions?
Even then it's not possible to maintain a consistently high amount.
Nor is it really a good idea.

12:16 AM
I'll see what I can do.
Then again, I raised 30+ flags yesterday

Bob
@DragonLord I mean, if you want to contribute more, that's good - but don't do so at the expense of your health.

@JourneymanGeek I still have some pre-DDR sticks :P

Lol.
I have no use for anything older than ddr2

Q: What would a sentient, intelligent, but very small bird use as a ranged weapon against human or larger armored targets?

grimmsdottirSo I have sparrows, which are sentient and intelligent, which are physically exactly still just the same, no extra hands or anything, so any weapon would have to be held in the feet or somehow attached to the wings. They have roughly the mentality of this .gif, and I would imagine that simply ho...

Q: Measuring feline capacitance

timthelionWhen I pet my cat, and then touch her on the nose, I get a little shock. Sometimes, when she walks up to something, her nose sparks and she jumps back and puffs out. I was wondering how I might go about measuring the capacitance of my cat. So how many micro-farads does my cat have? I don't think...

7:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek Thanks.
I've grown a liking for flat cables though.

That sounds either cheap and chinese, or super hipster chinese
Well, these fit

Bob
Say what you want about the audio quality of Samsung's included set, the cable is excellent.
Hasn't tangled in... ever.

oh, this is perpetually tangled.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek idk, it's $20 :P

hmm. $20 bucks is prolly worth a risk territory,

Bob
7:50 AM
lol
@JourneymanGeek Not in-ear though.
Which I generally like. Might actually be able to use them while lying down.

ahh. I don't like in ear. I prefer over ear,

Bob
But in-ear passive isolation does help on the train... hm.
@JourneymanGeek They're just plain earbuds that sit at the entrance :P
Over/on is a tad bulky for me.

lol.
I like the creatives cause I just dump em in my pocket. And they handled 2-3 washings.

Bob
And by "a tad" I mean how am I supposed to carry these around??
@JourneymanGeek That's how I tend ot treat mine. Minus the washing.
My earlier Panasonic and Sony sets were ruined in the wash :(

My ATH-M50s were outdoor, and bulky ;p
The fishers haven't left my desk.

Yeah. Also heavy
But they really are nice, and I love em
(Amusingly two of my friends got em on my research, and loved em. A little like @OliverSalzburg's speakers... which are a model I wanted but are entirely unavailable here ;p)

Bob
8:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek Heh. I'm considering those Creatives... buuuuut...
I get the impression they won't be easy to find here :\
Oh look, $20 on Amazon... annnnnd doesn't ship here.

Raspberry Pi 2 has quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 Processor, will run Windows 10, keeps $35 price tag

@DragonLord the odroid raspi competitor's the same price. Slightly faster, does gig e

What's really striking about this is that the Raspberry Pi Foundation managed to coax Broadcom to produce a custom SoC for them
The BCM2836 is a purpose-built chip designed to retain compatibility with the BCM2835 used in the old Raspberry Pi

Why is the shorthand for an "Update Rollup" RU? O___o

With that, the CPU is now a 900 MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7

12:02 PM
The Intel Edison is still faster and smaller :P

12:18 PM
I always wanted to get a Raspberry Pi but never had any particular application in mind, I'm not a maker myself
Perhaps this will get me to make the jump
ARMv7 means access to a vast ecosystem of software

12:53 PM
Raspberry Pi website has been down or in maintenance mode for a while, they're getting loads of traffic

Maybe they're running it off a cluster of Raspi 2s ;p

lol

And I THINK it'll end up being cheaper with shipping too

1:11 PM

Bob
@DragonLord Not very hard considering their volume.

And that

Bob
@DragonLord Fun little experiment, but just that. For anything remotely serious, I'd personally go for a low-power x86 box. Pipo X7 is ~100USD. NUC/Brix are more, but comparatively far more powerful.
If hardware hacking is more your thing... eh.
The GPIO is useful, but an Arduino (or other AVR prototyping board) are probably better.

1 hour ago, by DragonLord
I always wanted to get a Raspberry Pi but never had any particular application in mind, I'm not a maker myself

Bob
The RPI plus support (power supply, case, storage) is already 50-60 USD minimum.

1:25 PM
Then I suppose it's not for me.

Bob
I have an original model B.
Used it as a router for a bit.
I mean, it works. You can almost certainly find a use for it somewhere, and it's fun.
But personally I'd rather stick with x86 for actually getting things done.

ditto ;p

Bob
Fiddling with AVR, ARM, etc... maybe if I just wanted to fiddle :P

I had mine as a NAS, replaced it with a NUC-class system

Bob
Also, RPis aren't all that stable (dunno if they fixed that with B+ and now this)
They had a tendency to, ah... break the SD card.

1:28 PM
@Bob: I got it running well enough using a HDD for boot

Bob
Also, tiny power fluctuations (including plugging in a USB keyboard while it's powered on) can cause it to reset -_-
@JourneymanGeek Ya, but then you're also paying for the HDD, and the USB hub...

@Bob: yup

Bob
RPi looks cheap on paper, but once you get all the peripherals necessary, it's not so cheap.
I suppose if you wanted to build a cluster and shared some of the peripherals.

I do constantly joke that I spent more than twice as much money on accessaries than on the cluster ;p

Bob
But otherwise cost-wise it approaches a basic NUC with far less compute power.

1:30 PM
@Bob: If you just wanted compute, you could ISCSI boot them

@Bob I can repurpose the full set of peripherals connected to my laptop (monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc) but it's not exactly ideal

Bob
@Bob Model B, $35. Power supply, $10. USB hub, $5-$10 or powered hub $20.
SD card, $10-$20.

It's a huge leap forward for the maker community
Single-thread performance up 50%, 6x overall performance

Bob
@DragonLord Keep in mind that (unless they fixed it) you can't actually change USB peripherals while it's powered on.
Unless they go through another hub.

@Bob: They probably should have with the b+

1:32 PM
@Bob I have a generic USB 2.0 hub on hand which I can use if needed

Has to be powered

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ah, yea, they updated the polyfuse on the B+.

@JourneymanGeek Don't think this is an issue, keyboard and mouse are not going to pull more than 500mA

@DragonLord: keyboard and mouse should be OK. Any sort of storage on the other hand...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek On the old A/B models, simply adding the separation of an unpowered hub insulated the Pi from voltage fluctuations when you change peripherals.

1:35 PM
oh?

Bob
Actually, the original revision didn't even have those issues.

Yeah, the polyfuses...

Bob
It was the second (?) revision that removed the polyfuses to allow powering the Pi from a USB hub.

The third revision allows that.
Mine's USB hub powered

Bob
Ya, mine allows it too.

1:36 PM
New boards shouldn't have the 140mA limit
The thing that counts is your power supply

Bob
@DragonLord I wonder how that compares to the Z3736F.
Oh, I fully expect it to perform worse - they are Cortex-A7s after all - but I'm curious how close it gets.

Not sure if the input polyfuse is rated higher this time around
I'd rather not bypass it

Bob
Ok, looking at old benchmark results it seems that the Atom N270 benchmarked approx 4x faster than the BCM2835 for sha1 hashing (integer calc).

You don't generally ;p

Bob
Based on Passmark, the Z3736F is approx 3x faster overall and 1.5x faster for single-thread compared to the N270.
I am aware this is a highly inaccurate comparison, but it's the best I have right now :P
So the Z3736F might be approx 2x faster than the BCM2835.
That's excluding any accelerated paths, etc..
Keep in mind that the Z3736F is actually a 64-bit proc (though usually used with a 32-bit OS) and has a comparatively large L2 cache.
Not sure how NEON compares to SSE/AVX.
Hm... could get more direct results if only I had a BayTrail Atom to run sysbe- oh.
brb grabbing tablet :P

1:55 PM
Model B+ polyfuse is rated to 2A, and the RPi2 shouldn't be different
1.2A is available on the USB ports (but is limited to 600mA in the default configuration)
@Bob Claimed 20x performance with NEON compared to BCM2835 (about 5x performance per core).

@Bob: I have a bay trail celeron I don't mind testing stuff on

Modern compiler technology (e.g. GCC auto-vectorization) should take advantage of these instructions

Bob
@DragonLord I'm more interested in how it compares with the Z3736F the Pipo X7 uses.
We all know the previous gen RPi was shit, CPU-wise.
Barely enough to get by.
Obviously better with this version, but how close does it come to beating the more expensive Atom?

Quad-core also means a much smoother user experience
Parallel compute capability means less CPU starvation when it matters most
Fewer hangs and waits, more doing

Bob
@DragonLord Less useful on a single-purpose server, though.

2:04 PM
In the education environment for which the RPi is designed, it means students will not end up waiting for the computer anywhere near as often

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Could you run the RPi sysbench command?
I only have Windows on this tablet, and it's too much trouble to build that tool.
Should be available prepackaged for Linux.
@DragonLord If the RPi is your primary computer, you have bigger issues.
I always viewed it as a machine you use for testing, not as your actual dev machine.
Especially since buying a display defeats the purpose of the low price.

@Bob I might get one as a development/experimental device
I might need to get another SD card, though
(I have a bunch on hand but would rather keep them for my camera)

Bob
@DragonLord Get a cheap one.

8GB SanDisk Ultra is cheap, though
Really cheap

Bob
RPis have a nasty habit of bricking SD cards.
At least the older revs did.

2:08 PM
16GB is even better
$12 for a reasonably fast, good-quality card
$15 for the microSD version

My Galileo killed a 8GB microSD :'(

I use a 128mb one I has spare for ages ;p

128mb .... o.0

yeah. I just have berryboot on it

2:10 PM
I have two of those ;p
Got them for about 4$

I generally pick SanDisk Ultra as my "economy" memory cards
Good quality, major brand, inexpensive, decent performance.
SanDisk Extreme and Extreme PRO cards are what go in my DSLR

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ok, screw sysbench
Adafruit gives some in-browser benchmark results: learn.adafruit.com/introducing-the-raspberry-pi-2-model-b/…
They got 722 in Octane.
I get 3256 on Firefox on my Z3740 tablet, which is close enough to the Z3736F X7.
Some of that will be the better optimised browser.

And Sunspider is 2500ms vs 750ms.
Note that these are single-threaded tests, but both procs have four cores anyway.Inel Turbo Boost may provide an additional advantage in the single-thread scenario over a multi-threaded test.
Also note that I'm running these tests in a heavily loaded browser and with severe memory pressure.
Conclusion? Yes, RPi2 is better than the original RPi by a significant margin. But it's still far from being able to compete with a base-grade x86 proc.

Oh, you already bought the RPi2?

In your shoes, I'd throw them a closevote first post on meta, and let the community handle it ;p
(Instead of demanding a moderator's personal and undivided attention shortly before bedtime)

@JourneymanGeek I had existing votes to close with the wrong duplicate target, that's why

Q: How do I carry a mouse with me without damaging the middle mouse button or other buttons?

DragonLordAs a student, I need to carry a mouse with my laptop, but I often end up busting up mice within a year because the middle mouse button gets pressed on hard enough in my backpack to damage it in short order. A: How do I carry a mouse with me without damaging the middle mouse button or other buttons?

DragonLordI never thought of this, but as suggested by Journeyman Geek, a hard case is the answer. The Pelican 1060, at 8.25" x 4.25" x 2.25" inside (LWD), seems to be just the right fit for the larger gaming mice I use. For smaller travel mice, the 1010 or 1020 would be ideal.

I would like to ask a question about hardware advice. I am looking to get a new system & have something in mind, and was wondering whether it is on-topic to ask here?

6:56 PM
@martin We're certainly open to general chat about hardware, but it seems a bit quiet in here tonight... I can chat for a while but may have to vanish...

@Mokubai great! thanks :) I was considering a Chillblast system. I would use it primarily for fairly large combinatorial comupations. (Would also like to be able to use Photoshop etc.) - I can't really afford to make a mistake on this one!

@martin I saw your question, the machine looked an absolute beast...

The main components would be
- Intel Core i7 4960X 6-cored Processor 3.6GHz (Overclocked to up to 4.5GHz)
- Noctua NH-D14 Ultimate Performance Quiet CPU Cooler (Socket 2011 version)
- ASUS Sabertooth X79 Motherboard
- 64GB Corsair PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 Memory (8 x 8GB sticks)
- BeQuiet 750W Dark Power Pro Cable Managed PSU
- Creative Sound Blaster Z Gaming Soundcard (OEM)
That's great :) I wouldn't like to go overkill on it though - would any cutbacks seriously affect perfomance, ie - a large expense for only a little better perfomance?

SSDs offer great performance but are much more expensive than spinning rust disks, so I'd evaluate whether you need the disk speed vs the cost.
Did you want to post the rest of the specs in case anyone else comes along?

At the moment, I have a little laptop 3GB RAM & computations take forever, often crashing the kernel. How radically could I expect a machine like this boost performance?
Yes - will post rest of specs now

7:08 PM
Is this a gaming rig or a general performance work rig?

Not for gaming, no.

@martin It depends a lot on the work and the program. Do you see 100% CPU use in task manager?

Yes, frequently!

How much RAM does the program take?

I mainly use it for Mathematica, but used to be a graphic designer, so would like to keep my hand in there, & would like to be able to work with fairly large PSDs if needs be

7:11 PM
Well, 64GB of RAM would definitely help there...

Currenl;y running at 71%, but often goes higher.

The question you really have to ask is "Would the money lost in productivity waiting for slow components make a big difference to me?" Basically can you wait for a slow HDD or do you want everything "right here, right now"?
Spending a little more "up front" can make a massive difference in productivity, which can translate to cash if you do freelance work...

Speed is important, but what is more important to me is that the computations will not crash the kernel.

A new computer should be stable and not normally crash unless there is some hardware fault. I'd suspect your laptop is probably overheating.
Newer processors have thermal management that slows them down for a period of time so they can cool and carry on working rather than outright crashing
Not knowing what your laptop is I can't say for sure but most desktop rigs completely spank laptops.

I don't thik it's that - the kernel doen't crash exactly, just pops up wiuth a message that computation has exceeded available memory & kernel has quit.

7:17 PM
@martin The PSU is sweet, I have the same one ;D

Ah, ran out of memory...

Would you advise spending money on a decent cooling system then?
@Oliver - great! That gives me a bit of confidence ion the choice!

If you are going to be consistently hammering the CPU then I would make sure the cooling was as good as possible, if nothing else keeping the CPU cooler means a longer lifetime for it.

@martin Get a proper CPU heat sink + fan, that's for sure. Stock is usually too noisy for my taste and didn't provide enough cooling in past experiences. Especially with a high-end i7 IMHO

but the cooler you've got looks pretty good tbh

7:20 PM
Ah, didn't even see it. Yeah, that one looks like it'd do

Looks pretty evil

Great - thanks for the advice - I don't thik I have any more questions. You have both been really helpful - I really appreaciate the time you have given! :)

Make sure to get a nice SSD though :P
