12:17 AM
@Bob: I think that sd card died midway through a drive test

1:04 AM
anyone ever seen an issue where clicking windows in the taskbar doesn't make them come to the foreground? and by "windows" I mean any window
actually it works fine for non-maximized windows, but doesn't work for any maximized window

1:21 AM
is this with steam?
(cause that happens to me all the time with steam)

@JourneymanGeek I have Steam running, but it happens to Chrome, Spotify, and other random unrelated apps

2 hours later…
Bob
3:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek looks like UHS-I over USB2

@Bob: until it died ;p
I've got a 16gb stick in there now, and its consistantly hitting 19Mbps

Bob
Died? O_O

Yeah
completely undetected
Its probably under warranty but I didn't register it 0_0

Bob
4:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek Normally the registration isn't important.
Legally, here, you just need proof of purchase.

4:37 AM
@bob, lost that too. Meh
I'm more teed off about the stuff I set up on it

4:48 AM
(and accidentally wiping my IRC client settings. Managed to get the server info off my linux box, and the theming off my desktop)

Bob
5:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek :(

6:01 AM
@Bob: as I mentioned before, hardware tends to be replacable in my setups ;p
I'll want to set this up to back up the SD card and appdata every so often, one way
so if something goes wrong, I can just copy files back in place

WTF I see broken images in Chrome? Clicking on links results in "This Page Is Not Available". Refreshing does not help until few seconds later...

6:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek How is this possible?

Anything is possible ;p

@JourneymanGeek Does this serve as fallback method? i.e. my cable ISP goes yet I have 3G smartphone tethered to PC.

@Boris_yo: You can failback or loadbalance
I've done it with this node.js based software before

@JourneymanGeek Failback?
Meaning data exchange will fail and will have to resume from another source?

yes
whoot

6:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Do you know what does "Merge Connections" in "Merge or Delete Network Locations"?
Does it just merge names or data associated with each too?

Actually looking at that....
NO DO NOT TRUST THAT>
Bridging connections dosen't combine them IIRC
except for the last two, the person who wrote that has no idea what he's doing

bridging does not "combine" connections; it just attempts to bring them both into contact with one another at Layer 2 (MAC)... just like, if you have two cars that can't drive faster than 140 mph individually, slamming them into each other side by side doesn't allow you to drive 280 mph...

@allquixotic This just gets me cloned MAC?
@JourneymanGeek Looks like not anything is possible ;)

Bob
@allquixotic The mental image from that analogy...
can't stop laughing...

7:01 AM
I need to steal that one

7:15 AM
Anyway I was distracted
was experimenting with a ipv6 client on his netbook
gogo seems to suck for free access so I was working out how to get a aarnet tunnel working

Bob
7:31 AM
o.O

So I can't combine all public Wi-Fi spots in range and multiply my internet speed? I am going to report this article on WikiHow. I wonder if there are lawyer, doctor and dentist advice too on WikiHow...

sure you can
You just need one wifi adaptor per spot, and something like dispatch proxy, and do things that thread well

7:44 AM
oh
and ideally have them on seperated wifi channels

Q: Live usb windows xp

John ThePartizanI want to create a bootable usb that contains windows xp.I dont want to install it , i just want to boot it, but i have couple of problems. I tried to create live usb from full windows xp file (the one that is 700mb , and the reason why i choose it is because i need the full version of windows xp...

Seems like it should be easy enough to run Xp direct from a USB, but there does not seem to be any SU answer existing. I have run/booted win98 from a USB.

Its not easy - its doable but not easy

hard might be running it from a freaking USB3 where it could run with some speed, that would be ideal and much more usable.

Bob
You could probably run WinPE quite easily, but not full Windows.

i do not know what the contraint would be, but because i have no need to do it, i guess it doesnt matter.

@JourneymanGeek Can I use LAN and WiFi for this?

9:01 AM
sure
I've tried it before, but its not much point unless you had different connections.

@allquixotic there are 2 questions on SU abuot "windows to top" things going badly. Surprisingly it also happens in win8 (as reported by very few people). I have the problem off and on , and worse before win7 was fullly updated, but NOT just for maximised windows, for any windows. For me it gets confused as to what should be on top or not. it happens more often after/during running certain types of windows , like full screen (game) and my browser that is weird.
Most the time when the windows wont do what windows has done for 15years :-) it is just a matter of selecting various windows and re-ordering them again. Many people reported that "Show Desktop" function caused this layering of windows problem.

@JourneymanGeek I've used OpenShot under Ubuntu before and wasn't super-impressed. The GUI was a bit slow to respond, which made it hard to do fine edits. I'll try Lightworks. Thanks fo rthe suggestion.

Bob
9:17 AM
> In response to my hypothetical game of walls and ladders, one of my colleagues wrote, "Note to self: Do not get into a walls-and-ladders contest with Raymond."
XD
> I always find it funny (no... wait... REALLY ANNOYING) when two DRM apps try to prevent each other doing things that they need to do in order to prevent each other doing things that they need to do to prevent each other doing things that they need to do in order to prevent each other...

@Bob back in XP i had applied utilities to do "always on top" for doing side by side copy paste and transfer and stuff. but in the case of windows no longer doing windows :-) correctally , none of them are pinned, none of them are jumping foreward for purpose, they just do not come foreward correct

I have the 2 monitors, and have at least 6 windows/programs running , so i really do not think that the dudes at MS answers , who at first said it never happens, then one dude got it to happen, but still seems to fight for it not happening? as if you could show him something , and he would insist that windows is still perfect ?? The people who said Show Desktop causes it to happen, confused me because i might only accidentally apply show desktop ever. so i tested that theroy and nothing.
The only real reason it bugs me, or that i think it is somehow different, it Never ever happened in XP , me using mostly all the same programs. Right after windows 7 it was happening badly, like it didnt know its head from its butt. then an update to the "grafics" the direct draw layers of updates , it quit happening often and now only happens sometimes.
In Xp i would have been even more active, and less organised, and common ammount of windows open regular would have been 11-23.
Playing games as "windows" or "borderless windows" is odd feeling, some (rare older) games would not work full screen, only windowed. with those i would expect any number of windows problems to happen :-) so i would ignore any problems exisitng then. it is just normal day to day windows flipping, mostly done by selecting a window itself , not the taskbar.
I also do not attribute it to the aero render methods, when it will also do it in classic (not basic which still is aero).
The problem is not so bad as to switch OSes, but then i saw this

Q: Windows getting stuck on top in Windows 8.1

CraigI'm noticing an issue where windows will get pinned on top of another in 8.1. This happens completely randomly. I'll bring up a second application, and it won't appear until I actually minimize my Chrome (or other) foreground window. Does anyone know how to fix this? The only applications I run ...

10:03 AM
superuser.com/questions/606968/… I seem to be able to get it to work again everytime by "re-ordering" select the stuck one, then select the back one again, and it is back in business. superuser.com/questions/269415/…
I do not use like ANY of the programs these people were using, the many of them should have been suspect from the start. Any program that spcifically IS arranging the windows :-) I mean wake up people.

10:29 AM
Windows are soo cool :-) photoshop allows all the pallets or tools to move about , but in cs2 they would not dock, and they wont stay with the parent window. It seems so disorganised, when programs before would stay integrated together, Easy.
My video program also uses this method of psycotic windows that can be detached . it is great to align the way you use it, to your desired workspaces.
Lol, without docking or staying with said window , the program might just as well be "full screen" only or something. I donno i could never develop such things , and make the final descision on which method would be proper , but there had to be better ways :-)
A person should be able to rearrange (move slightly) the parent windows without having to re-arrange all the children again.

10:50 AM
Hmm, hold the shift key when moving it.
Next time i will spend the first 5 hours reading the manuel , before i assume to edit a simple photo

11:02 AM
(quick minor pimpage, if anyone's interested ;p)

Blah some stupid ff addon is leaking memory

Bob
11:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/… ...2-pack? o.O
@JourneymanGeek Remember: WIMboot loses much of its effectiveness with updates.
> There’s a few nice touches – a power/charging light on the left that’s orange when its charging, and white when its full, an orange mute light on the mute button and a power light on the side (which is nice if your system is on when your lid is closed).
...literally been on every HP device I've seen. Is this not standard? o.O
You can change the function key default in the firmware menus
They've had that on full-size laptops since at least 2011
Yea, clickable touchpads are... eww.
Stupid Mac fad
Less functional than proper buttons, especially if you want a context menu

@Bob so you can be listening to the same music when you're pair-programming
@Bob the touchpad on my work laptop is actually on a couple of microswitches, so you can click it by tapping like any touchpad, or by actually pressing the whole touchpad down

11:46 AM
@Bob: I've not owned any HP devices

@Bob further proving everything is made in china? I thought sony was a manufacture that made stuff IN japan ? and after all the issues they have had with china over selling them anything.

and yeah, storage space is somewhat tight ;p
@DanHulme oh this does that
A common complaint on the stream is that the touchpad is insensitive
seems fine to me, and I don't generally use touchpads

@JourneymanGeek will it play one of them 264 type high def videos over the hdmi fine?

@Psycogeek: I don't have any high def screens to test

12:00 PM
@Bob I do wonder if they have some way to deal with that.

12:38 PM
Thats interesting
I get a ton of noise if I plug my amp into the stream, but not if its just the headphone.
(Its can power it directly, so... I can just bypass the amp, but this is new)

Bob
1:08 PM
o.O
@DanHulme and it's quite painful to use
especially for right-clicking
but painful for dragging too
(they often have trouble telling the difference between a drag and a pinch-to-zoom)
give me proper buttons, please
@Psycogeek probably yes
the GPUs on Bay Trail chips are decent

@Bob: I got the hang of rightclicking...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh. on the Miix keyboard, it works sometimes
I think it's supposed to be the bottom right corner, but it doesn't work so often that I'm not even sure of that

On the stream its a 2 fingered click
I dunno on the x220, trackpad has never been used :p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek And what's a left+right click? Three fingers?

No idea
I'd rather use a mouse. Easier when you have paws like mine

Bob
1:21 PM
O_O
Someone wants to buy a "NVIDIA 7950 GX2 w\ green heatsink"

Oo
One of a kind? -l:p

Bob
1:32 PM
@JourneymanGeek It's from 2006 o.O
Oh, and I just finished reading your review
> Oh, and if you’re wondering, the cover is a pencil case from daiso.
Aha! :P

lol
I think so at least ;p
@Bob I'm also wondering if google will pick up on this like my headphone review ;p
With the FA003s tho, its an obscure bit of kit

Bob
...seriously? People actually think that's spam?

What is?

Bob
and the messages above it
basically the guy linked two facebook pages and one instagram page

eww chat flags

Bob
1:45 PM
I'm beginning to think people are mindlessly droning with chat flags

We need to do more blue invasions

Bob
I really cannot believe 10+ people marked it valid

Bob
1:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek Oh god that question you just edited -_-
He's gone off in what seems to be a totally wrong direction... bets on this being a "a little knowledge can be a bad thing" case?

I'm slightly waffling on closing that
erm...
I was thinking a metaphor involving a sufficiently long length of rope...

@Bob Hi, thanks for the help.
Yet, opening chrome://browser/content/browser.xul makes my iceweasel crash @Bob.

Bob
@k.stm ...crash?
In what way?

Stop reacting.

Bob
Just close? Crash reporter? Freeze?
Oh, so freeze.

1:59 PM
Freeze, yes.

Bob
Interesting. It's worked on all versions of FF I've tried it on.

@Bob: I am dissapointed that dosen't go more than 2 down ;p
Also, context?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It used to go all the way :P

A: Does Firefox use some default “chrome.css” from which I can learn how to change my own userChrome.css?

BobYou can find information on userChrome.css on MozillaZine and MDN As for where the default CSS is, that's actually packed inside the browser/omni.ja file, which is in the ZIP format. The browser chrome should be under /chrome/browser/content/browser. IIRC, if you unpack that file then the browse...

@k.stm ^ that's what you should've seen

Ok, maybe it’s because of the plugins I have installed. vimperator/tabkit plus, etc.

Bob
@k.stm So what's this tab highlighting coming from?

2:10 PM
I don’t know – maybe it’s tabkit plus.

disable all your plugins and re-enable them till something breaks? ;p

It isn’t tabkit plus, I just checked that.

Bob
@k.stm Tab Mix Plus?
(That's the one I use, and it does do highlighting under some circumstances)

2:25 PM
Oh, it’s just TabKit, TabKit 2e, to be precise.

Bob
@k.stm Try starting in safe mode (-safe-mode, or hold shift while starting)

2:58 PM
Ok, tab highlighting comes from vanilla firefox, the chrome://-line now functions for some reason and I still want to change that highlighting thing, but I got something urgent to take care of right now.
Can I contact you later if I’m working on it and encounter some problems/need clarification?

Bob
@k.stm Sure. I really should be sleeping now anyway :P
You can always ping me in this chat; I should see it within a day.
What does this tab highlighting do, exactly?
I don't think I've ever seen it in FF.

3:19 PM
hm
According to ynab, I ended feb with 89c left in my spending budget ;p
(granted, a third of that is in my wallet right now... I mean the budget ;p)

Bob
o.o

@Bob: Oh, I have a spending budget of 300 dollars maximum of that month's income.
Anything left over rolls over to the next month
between the Stream (which was from.. er... december's allowance?) and various stuff (homeplug upgrade and so on) I pretty much have 250 quid left over of the total ;p
(and cash doesn't count)
My accounting is wierd XD

3:44 PM
microsoft.com/microsoft-hololens/en-us whut ? You would think they could explain what it is first. before piling on the theoretical fantasy of how it could be applied.

1 hour later…
4:52 PM
Hello all. I was recommended to come here regarding a hardware question

ask away

I am looking for an LGA-1150 motherboard with 6 RAM slots as I have 6 RAM modules from a previous rig and would like to use them. I was wondering if someone could help on this. Many thanks.

Bob

more than 4 ram slots is likely to be a server type of board. how about a 2011 :-)

Bob
They only exist for LGA-1366 and LGA-2011 (enthusiast/server)

5:01 PM
Thanks guys. I though I would go 1150, but obviously I'll have to change

Bob
And those mobos tend to cost a lot more, not even considering the higher CPU cost
@Subzero-273K You can start here, if you really want to use the RAM: pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#N=6,12&qq=1
But I would suggest starting with a CPU, then picking a mobo
Leave RAM for last - it's relatively cheap and easy to adapt
You won't find a mobo with 6+ RAM slots for under $200
(probably)

Yes, I have noticed :(
Thanks @Bob and @Psycogeek

5:47 PM
I think AMD should refresh their FX processors once more as a stopgap before Zen
Die shrink to 28 nm, Excavator core
More single-threaded performance, less power consumption.
Up to eight integer cores in four modules.
It'll make FX-9590 performance possible within a 160 W envelope.
Perhaps even less as the clocks can be significantly lower with the newer cores.
@Subzero-273K It's just not supported for anything below the Intel HEDT platform.
You'll need a Socket LGA 2011 board for that.
Speaking of LGA 2011, HP needs to refresh their ENVY Phoenix gaming desktops.
The high-end models are still on the older LGA 2011-0 socket using Ivy Bridge-E processors.
Liquid cooling is all fine and dandy but it needs to be mated to a modern processor and good graphics
Anything less than a GeForce GTX 960 is not going to win any customers
As things stand, the money is much better spent on the HP Omen gaming notebook.

6:16 PM
Found this gem a few days ago
Desktop socket LGA 1150 in a 15.6-inch laptop.
First time I've seen anything like this.
Z97 chipset, Devil's Canyon in a laptop
M.2 type 2280 slots with PCIe
Graphics up to GTX 980M with workstation Quadro options available
Dimensionally very similar to my NP8255-S, but loses the optical drive

6:39 PM
@DragonLord nice buy me one! I will have a birthday right now so you can have a reason :-)

7:03 PM
I think this is why I end up building computers , after selecting everything i would build, the price seems to be a wee bit high.

The build I was thinking about is about $2800
My current laptop with all aftermarket upgrades (SSDs and memory) is about $2750
It's been in use for just over a year with no major issues so far.
It seems to be more reliable than my old custom-built HP Pavilion dv6z-3000, which suffered two keyboard failures, a mouse button failure, and an optical drive failure (ejecting by itself) leading to the need to purchase two warranty extensions
4
Q: My keyboard is typing by itself, could there be a ghost in it?

DragonLordThe keyboard on my HP Pavilion dv6z-3000 Select Edition laptop is acting funny: it's sometimes typing characters like 134, adjusting the volume, or triggering the print dialog, all by itself, or as I type. This can happen when I press certain keys. Sometimes, the keyboard fails to respond altog...

The old laptop was about $1100 at build time
The mouse buttons on my current laptop aren't in good shape, but I don't really care as I use a proper mouse

a laptop as a desktop would really never work for me until they have docking systems where 27 wires are all connected at once, otherwise there it will sit on the desk.

The old HP laptop was in service for about 3-1/2 years before it was retired.
My laptop serves as a desktop replacement at home and as my main PC for use on the field, in class, in the coffeeshop, etc.

plus i would like to see a slide on cooling addition on my dock, so you walk in slide the mobile device in and it becames a real desktop.

Hence the investment into one high-end laptop.
At home, the system sits on an aluminum laptop stand to keep temps down

7:15 PM
@DragonLord it's a feature!

It's hooked up to an external display and Roccat keyboard and mouse.

2 hours later…
9:39 PM
O_o
New Nintendo 3DS XL can act as an SMB share
If you've got lots of games, it seems the New 3DS can also access SMB shares on a network so you don't have to worry about running out of space on the microSD card

9:55 PM
...seems not, only a full backup feature.
It's still SMB-based.
