Q: Ok to install standard heatsink in PowerMac G4?

Nick D.So, I had told my brother that I needed a good PC for schoolwork, and he gave me a PowerMac G4, and told me that I would need to dust it, as he hadn't used it in years. Upon taking it apart, I took off the MONSTER heatsink it had in it (about a 4 inx4 in heatsink) to see what socket the PowerPC...

Bob
> Java programming for school? Perfect PC.
ohgodno
Netbeans and Eclipse won't be happy unless you have at least a gigabyte of available RAM.
You could go without an IDE, but IMO programming (or learning to) without an IDE is just stupid.
...why am I looking up decade-old benchmarks?
> It is pretty clear that despite the enormous 31 stage pipeline, the fantastic branch predictor of the "Xeon Pentium 4" is capable of keeping the damage to a minimum.
...never thought I'd see that statement

Bob
2:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek Consider the rather newer G5 (~3x better than the G4?) was about on par with an Irwindale Xeon [NetBurst, ~P4] (better microbenchmarks, worse real-world results). Consider next that a modern Celeron is about five times faster, and a modern i3 is about ten times faster.
So... a Celeron is approx 15 times faster.
An i7 is approx 60x faster.

Bob
And then there's the measly 1.25 GB of RAM.
I don't even remember when I last bought a computer with RAM measured in fractions of a gigabyte.
Auction it off to a museum or collector, and buy a $300 proper computer or $400 laptop.

lol
I can get a few gen old, second hand laptop for about 100 quid ;p
would still run circles around it
I'd consider it a cool curiocity piece. Just not a 'good pc'

Speaking of running circles around it, the Z3740D should be ~6x faster.

lot of wierdteresting questions today

Bob
6:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek well that's far more relevant :P
@JourneymanGeek They're really putting an AMD chip with a TDP of 25W and an Intel chip with a TDP of 4W in the same category? O_O

Bob
Consider that a ULV i7 has a TDP of 15W... yea.

pretty much ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...misleading as fuck
"outperforms Intel" => "outperforms Intel's 4W TDP Bay Trail Atom"

@Bob: Actually it was more the "Switching between arm and x86 at runtime boot"

Bob
6:36 AM
Until they can provide a TDP, saying it outperforms one of Intel's lowest-power chips isn't saying much at all...
They might have a serious case against that AMD chip, though - 25W TDP is a far easier target.

Well, Via's always been VERY strong at low power
their main issues are performance, and well....
actually getting their product on the market

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, depends a lot on which process size they can manage, too
and while they may have been strong compared to the competitors a few years ago, it's harder to say now

@Bob: Still, you could create a world-beating chip that can do jigga-bogomips per second for no power at all, and no point if your customers can't actually buy it ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Wait, how strong?

@Bob: I remember they built passively cooled chips
They arn't speedy or efficient but they were very low power
and theoratically cheaper cause they tended to design VERY small chips

Bob
6:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek not really
not the Nano line, anyway

still
fairly moot as long as its vaporware. I'm just suprised they're still around

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm seeing TDP figures of 5-6-10-18-20W

and note. I remember. I don't know cause I've almost not ever seen any of their products
@Bob: which is pretty good, no?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...no

fine ;p

Bob
6:45 AM
lemme point out that the Atom N270 had a TDP of 2.5W
before the Atom line, when Intel didn't really care about low power, Via didn't really have a competitor there.

Bob
Since? No, as far as I can see, Intel's producing far lower power chips
half the power consumption is quite significant
especially in a phone or tablet
Consider then that the Bay Trails are SDP 2W/TDP 4W
Judging by the claimed OPS and throughput of the new Via procs, the TDP must be under 10W to be remotely competitive in the extremely-low-power segment
Heck, I'd say under <=6W to really beat out the established Intel
Even then, 6W might be too high for phones, unless it has an excellent power saving mode/frequency scaling
@JourneymanGeek Interesting, but I dunno how useful.
It's not likely to get major OS support soon.

@TheLittleNaruto Can MP4 contain multiple video streams?

But one thing I dint understand, It's taking a lot of time.
Can we reduce it ?

> preset

Default: medium

Change options to trade off compression efficiency against encoding speed. If you specify a preset, the changes it makes will be applied before all other parameters are applied.

You should generally set this option to the slowest you can bear.

Values available: ultrafast, superfast, veryfast, faster, fast, medium, slow, slower, veryslow, placebo.
@TheLittleNaruto ^
ultrafast is another way of saying "I ain't got time to compress"

8:06 AM
I see!
So let's try it already!

Bob
Try medium first.
Though, last time I asked @slhck recommended using -crf
@TheLittleNaruto unless encoding time is really an issue for you, it's probably better if you ignore it entirely and just focus on the quality/filesize tradeoff

where I'll put the value medium ? Will it be something like :
- ultrafast: medium

Bob
@TheLittleNaruto no, it'd be -preset medium, but that's the default anyway

Oh okay

Bob
suse crf if you can
better to not care overly much about encoding time

8:09 AM
But, if encoding will take so much time, it's quite irritating at the user's point of view.

Bob
@TheLittleNaruto What's this for?
Generally, you want the best quality in as small a filesize as possible
encoding is a one-time thing
filesize will annoy you for a long time
and quality is forever

I am developing a collage app for android devices

Bob
...encoding on a phone (or tablet) is gonna end in tears

@Bob Hmm. Point!

Bob
if you sacrifice quality now, you'll never get it back

8:11 AM
@Bob You never know, T_T Sniff! Sniff!

Bob
if you sacrifice filesize, you might have to reencode in future (which also reduces quality), and could be an issue if you ever need to transfer it over a network connection
you could make these user-adjustable
or use a fast encode for a preview, but a good/slow one for the final product
still, I'd recommend not doing this on a phone -_-

@Bob Yeah! that's good point
Ah I have no choice. It's client requirement. I cant say NO
:(

8:25 AM
sure you can
wait
you're doing this on a phone?
(well, there's this guy on Serverfault...)
2

Bob
xD
@TheLittleNaruto Consider using the hardware encoder, if possible.

@JourneymanGeek Yes :D

@Bob I did already. The thing is there is absence of Hardware encoder in some devices, So I need to use FFmpeg as an alternative.

...encoding on a phone (or tablet) is gonna end in tears
As I was saying...
@TheLittleNaruto There's such a thing as unrealistic requirements.
If they asked you to make them ruler of the universe, would you say yes?

lol
Of course NO

Bob
Simply: "You want to encode on a phone? It'll either be slow or shitty quality, take your pick. No, you can't have both."
(Given limited phone storage, I don't think a large size is a valid option...)

Ah! I am in dilemma
@-@
@Bob That's true. I need to reduce the size at least it should not cross the actual size of the video

8:52 AM
Ohh Man! crf at least reduced the size to 42MB. Thanks Bob :)

Bob
@TheLittleNaruto well, it was probably more dropping the ultrafast :P
presets control speed/size and crf controls quality/size, I think

@Mokubai Do you know that Apple spends millions on advertising (image)?
@Mokubai Match made in heaven? Apple + Beats? Why do you associate Apple on par with Beats?
@Bob How often do you have "Private Number" calls and do you answer them occassionally?

9:21 AM
@Bob That could be possible :) can we set something like `-preset fast' to make process fast ? Because the value medium still taking so much time.

Bob

hmm
fun problem

nope

Its not showing up in the windows 7 network scan

@JourneymanGeek there's gotta be some way to find it... hm.

I'll just hit it with nmap
its so... inelegant tho

Wait. That shouldn't even work....
I think I have one system on the wrong ip address range
hmm, no, I took down the dd-wrt after the dlink came in
Heh. It would be easier to reset the router.
Less fun tho
Its not turning up on a portscan

9:48 AM
xD
Putting -preset fast reduced the size to 24MB. But still the process is too slow.
Hmm, looks like I need to use ultrafast xD

Bob
@TheLittleNaruto it's on a phone
forget your client, you have entirely unrealistic expectations

^ Yes
The problem is with H.264 encoding only
If I use -c:v copy instead of -c:v libx264 , it wont take so longer
Anyway. It's okay at least I can go further with reduced size.

10:20 AM
Ugh
there are many possible dupes but no answers

Just factory default it? :P
I'm guessing it has DHCP turned off.
Or you could Wireshark it.

11:15 AM
@Boris_yo the simple fact is that Apple hardware is only marginally different to competing hardware and cost to manufacture is probably very similar, Apple hardware costs on average about 20 to 30% more than what I would consider a competing high-end device. The only excuse for that big a difference is that Apple, exactly like Beats, focus on marketing.

12:03 PM
@MichaelFrank: yeah
I'd rather not factory default it. Its not in an easy to reach place at the moment

@Bob I saw the ping about the Via procs 6 hours ago -- right now I don't think anything of it besides agreeing with you that their claims of performance are meaningless until we see how much energy it uses
to think that a company like Via could exceed Intel's state of the art performance per watt is almost unfathomable.
if there's any company I'd peg as having a fighting chance of exceeding Intel's performance per watt, it'd be ARM Holdings' own core designs (the Cortex series).
and even then it's a battle because they're using a significantly older fab
even as TSMC moves to 20nm, Intel is moving to 14nm in the same year, so TSMC will not have a process size advantage for any significant amount of time.
