4:00 PM
@Bob I appreciate the help, but I am not here for that long, so no need to mess up your stuff, at least right now ;)

Pretty much, @allquixotic

@Bob I'm gonna check a youtube vid to help me out with that ok

Bob
@RoXaS eh. next thing to do is boot into the USB drive again
warning: you won't be able to boot back into your Windows installation for a while

@Bob what's with the actually intelligent users coming to us for help this morning, huh?

4:04 PM
Okay I'm on it

it's like the Coronal Mass Ejection made the populace smarter or something @_@
!! s/Mass/Brains/

@allquixotic it's like the Coronal Brains Ejection made the populace smarter or something @_@ (source)

Bob
once you're in the USB drive, do the Shift+F10 thing again
then cd into C again
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot

@Bob Hehe yeah forgot to boot into bios
Gave a weird error

Bob
@RoXaS out of curiosity, what was the error?

error: no such device : c3442433-423432423-32423553456-
Dat numbers are made up
then it says grub rescue> _

@RoXaS nice made-up GUID :D

with blinking underscore
@allquixotic Just doing what i do best

Bob
@RoXaS ...oh god damnit

@Bob lol ?

Bob
4:08 PM
ok, hopefully /fixboot will take care of the remnants of GRUB

@Bob So the inevitable grub remains

Bob
I really hate how it clobbers the Windows bootloader
IIRC grub rescue is entirely contained within the boot sector

@Bob It say element not found

Bob
-_-
this brings back bad memories
ok.

@Bob Grub is the devil

Bob
4:11 PM
@RoXaS Looks like there's a good chance a BCD rebuild will be required. Next: back up the BCD.
Navigate to C:\Boot\
do a dir in there
I can't remember the exact path of the BCD :\

@Bob GRUB learned how to live peacefully in the UEFI System Partition with GRUB2.

Bob
@allquixotic This is a MBR/BIOS system...

then ignore me :P

@Bob Okay the dirs are nearly all language codes
like nl-NL
en-GB
en-US

I almost forgot that some people still use BIOS/MBR :P

Bob
4:12 PM
@RoXaS Is there a BCD file among those?

only file is memtest.exe

Bob
I really need a reference system... urk
Hey, wait, UEFI systems still have a BCD!
brb mounting partition :P

@Bob Are you wrecking your own systems just for me
That is so sweet

Bob
hm, turns out that's not necessary, it's within the system drive here too
oh yea
@RoXaS Try a dir /a

What is the BCD store?
The Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store contains boot configuration parameters and controls how the operating system is started in Microsoft® Windows Vista® and Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 operating systems. These parameters were previously in the Boot.ini file (in BIOS-based operating systems) or in the nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) entries (in Extensible Firmware Interface–based operating systems). You can use the Bcdedit.exe command-line tool to affect the Windows® code which runs in the pre-operating system environment by adding, deleting, editing, and appending ent

Bob
4:14 PM
it's a hidden/system file or something -_-

yeah there it is

Bob
ok. what you want to do is copy the file somewhere else

its just BCD
BCD.LOG

Bob
like copy C:\Boot\BCD C:\BCD.BACKUP
then go back to the installation wizard sitting there, continue through the keyboard/language settings, but don't click install now, click the 'repair your computer' link that should be there somewhere

help me a sec on the copy command
is it binary or text?

Bob
4:16 PM
binary
use xcopy if you can, it's a little less stupid

Copy /B BCD C:\BCD.backup will do the trick

Bob
yep, that should be fine

IU'm a little rusty onb that command
it failed

Bob
use xcopy :P
@RoXaS Did xcopy work?
xcopy /h BCD C:\BCD.backup

haha thx
i was struggling with that

Bob
4:21 PM
@allquixotic ready for you now, do you have a pubkey?

yeah
It worked

Bob
@RoXaS Ok. Next:

Oh fuck

Bob
6 mins ago, by Bob
then go back to the installation wizard sitting there, continue through the keyboard/language settings, but don't click install now, click the 'repair your computer' link that should be there somewhere
@RoXaS ?

I craated a folder that is named BCD.Backup

Bob
4:22 PM
o.O
does it contain BCD inside?

yeah
xD
But i got it working
and I check C: with dir
and the file is there

Bob
as long as you have a backup

i got like 2 now

Bob
next, go to 'repair your computer'

because I for got dir /a

Bob
4:23 PM
@RoXaS the more the merrier!

done
troubleshoot
Refresh your pc or Reset our pc or Advanced options

Bob
...oh god it's win8

:P

Bob
advanced options
I've only ever done this with 7 -_-

Restore / Image Recovery / Startup repair
or Command Propmt

@Bob I appreciate the help, but I am not here for that long, so no need to mess up your stuff, at least right now ;)

Bob
@RoXaS startup repair

Its diagnosing and stuff

Bob
@allquixotic eh, might as well give you access if you want :P

wtf MS buys Mojang O__o

Bob
@RoXaS yea, leave it for a bit
hope it works -_-

4:25 PM
also, there's an OpenVPN AS Amazon EC2 Image in the community AMI list :D

Hehe me 2

Bob
if you want, you can read my saga

Q: How can I repair or install startup repair/system recovery after BCD corruption?

BobHow should I go about repairing startup repair? Installing startup repair onto the hard drive, as if it was not originally there, would also fix this. In the hope that someone at a Windows-specific forum may have an idea, I've also posted this over at Microsoft Answers: http://answers.microsoft...

so if he ever needs this to actually work, I can fire up the image on a m2.medium spot instance for like a penny an hour

Bob
(btw, the answer is what we're gonna do after repair recreates BCD entries for you - because the repair entries, ironically enough, miss the recovery environment)

@Bob I am so unfamiliar with all this stuff
I wouldve never figured this out on my own
Thank you so much man

Bob
4:27 PM
@RoXaS heh, trial by fire is a great motivator :P

Hehe
"I believe in learning on the job"

Bob
I was pretty clueless about a day before that question :P

@Bob I'm a pretty broke ass student right now but I get salary in a week
Let me buy you a pizza
then

Bob
lol. don't worry about that
appreciate the thought, though
@allquixotic I really need to get EC2 figured out sometime

@Bob <- The first man in history to refuse free pizza
What kind of a superhero are you

Bob
4:30 PM
hey, at least wait until this actually works!
a lot of it is prayers and black magic :\
you can throw the same commands at it a dozen times, and somehow it works the last time

That is how programming works
You throw things against a wall and see what sticks

Bob
lol

I have actually made a script when I was drunk

Bob
^ I experienced the first followed by the second in quick succession recently.
The change to fix it? add a 50ms delay.

I still don't know how it works, but it's better than anything i;ve made so far and super fast
hehe oh god the timings
Try creating a FTP client from scratch in C
fuck all those timings

Bob
4:33 PM
Everything was event based; the delayed portion was on the render event handler... but it still needed an extra delay :S
@RoXaS ...good lord no

@Bob It worked untill we wanted simultaneous uploading
then it barfed

Bob
any luck with the repair?

Still repairing

Bob
ugh
there's a good chance it'll give you a nice failure

My laptop is slow as fuck
So i take comfort in that
That's why I want the clean install

Bob
4:35 PM
at which point you can try tossing a few rebuildbcds at it followed by the manual bcdedit fix followed by another startup repair
@RoXaS but you don't want to overwrite the existing one?
you might end up in a similar situation of one OS depending on a bootloader on the other drive :\
(UEFI fixes that nicely, but you don't have that)

@Bob Well the thing is that I'm interning at a large airline company and I use my own laptop to work on

Bob
ouch

And I kinda need it tomorrow

Bob
...

So I think I have backed up the most important shit

Bob
4:37 PM
ok
in other words
fix this ASAP
:P
would've been better as a weekend project

I like to live dangerously
Well the internship actually costs me more money than it gets me

Bob
heh. I was adding an SSD cache the morning before an afternoon class/presentation needing the same laptop :D

So I work in the weekends

Bob
@RoXaS -_-

Yaay internships
So I work 7 days a week for very little pay

Bob
4:38 PM
what time is it over there anyway?

this was my first day off in 3 months
6:39

Bob
o.O

pm

Bob
@RoXaS is that AM or PM?
ah. where are you? sounds like Europe

The netherlands

Bob
4:39 PM
ah
we have quite the spread here :P

@Bob Where are you then?

Bob
@RoXaS The land of kangaroos, emus, and drop bears ;)

Imaginationland?

Bob
xD
Australia

I figured

Bob
4:42 PM
any luck with the repair?
might be time to jump to the more drastic measures

Still attempting

Bob
I can't remember how long it takes to finish

Do i need to get a preventive fire extinguisher?

Bob
couldn't hurt :P

I;m reading about some guy who had the computer run for 3.5 days
with startup repair

Bob
4:45 PM
yea, might give it a couple more mins, then cut it off

Brb i'm getting some food
I'm startving

@Bob there's exactly one thing bad about EC2: the price to have a box up 24/7 is way too high for the resources you get. ALL OTHER ASPECTS of EC2 are superior to or as good as any other hosting environment out there, including dedicated (their VM overhead is incredibly low, no clue how they do it)
if you don't need the box up 24/7, it's even the cheapest solution available

Bob
@allquixotic IIRC my biggest issue is the price of their persistent storage and data transfer.
@RoXaS When you get back, if the repair is still going, cancel it and try something else.

@Bob the storage prices are high but not abhorrently high unless you need terabytes. for program installs that don't deal with big datasets it's great
there's also S3 Reduced Redundancy which is priced more reasonably and has the reliability of approximately an enterprise-grade RAID10
whereas regular full redundancy S3 has the reliability of approximately an enterprise-grade RAID10 plus five separate copies of the array
there's also instance storage if you DGAF

back
any safe way to cancel this?

Bob
4:53 PM
eh... pull the plug/battery
not really a safe way
or you can try shutdown /s /t 00

@RoXaS ask it nicely; if it doesn't comply, use sudo or runas or GOOBY PLS (accordingly to your OS) ..... (ps this entire post is a joke)

well i made it stop

Bob
@allquixotic So, most *nixes, Windows and OS X? ;P

HAMMERTIME!

its now booting into the usb

4:54 PM
@Bob GOOBY PLS is the sudo equivalent for LOL/Linux, which is the userspace implementation consisting entirely of lolcode that doesn't exist yet, but it will someday when I'm bored

@allquixotic I asked it nicely, and it worked.. that voice recognition is really working for them

Y GOOBY is the ilol (Interactive LOLcode REPL) command to see the stack trace

Bob
@RoXaS You back in the command prompt?

OH GOD THE NETHERLANDERS ARE TAKING OVER!
2

Bob
4:56 PM
@Hennes Translation?

@Hennes I dont know how this is relevant

Someone steals and rides of on a scooter.
Employee hunts him down with a car.
1-0 for justice

(there are two of them in here!)

Somehow I feel bad for yellow "Yes, well done" when I read that

@allquixotic We breed quickly... Prostitution is very effective way to spread stuff
@Bob Aye

4:57 PM
@allquixotic Weerstand is nutteloos! (resistance is futile!)

Bob
@RoXaS Oh god you even speak like @Hennes! :P

next thing you know, @RoXaS will be speaking to @Lindy_hop in Netherlandese (tm) and giving her instructions on how to conquer the world!

@allquixotic shes my bottom bitch

Lindy already thinks she is the queen of the world. :)

Bob
4:58 PM
(@Hennes says "Aye" like @JourneymanGeek says ";P", "lol" and "ahh".)

ahh. ;_)

we need to start starring ayes like we star ahhs

@Bob What next matey?

Bob
@RoXaS Do you have a camera handy?

Dinky-di Roxas :)

4:59 PM
@Bob I havent seen u use the work cunt once... you sure you are aussie?

Bob
because bcdedit is a pain to transcribe :\
@RoXaS I'm... not very traditional :P

@Bob Yeah sure

@Hennes what was the twitter url of your cat, again? twitter.com/Lindy_hop is actually a real human being whose attractiveness made me instantly, reflexively Ctrl+W @_@

@kitten_Lindy
My name is Lindy Hop. I was born 29-4-2011. On 2-8-2011 I found a new home, thanks to the local animal shelter.
