@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ take2. (something is going horribly wrong with me)
checked power requirements: 1130W suggested

Power looks good, but will that card fit in that case?

checking now, thanks for pointing out
from Corsair:
Maximum GPU Length
452mm
from Gigabyte: L=292mm
what does not look good is the price :|
I thought I decreased it, it levitated by 200€

7:17 PM
@Federico that seems to be a common problem :D

@Federico I just remember one of my first gamer builds I did, the card was too long... So I always doublecheck that

@CanadianLuke same here :D
my HD5970 was too long for the case I wanted it in, so I went out in the middle of a hurricane to a Best Buy and said "I need the deepest case you have"
turns out the one I ended up buying not only worked, but lasted me for several years and was good quality
a little cramped, but great cooling
I still remember running across the parking lot carrying an enormous box in 60 mph sustained winds -- an employee at the door shouted at me "Be careful!" because they didn't want me falling with my brand new purchase lol
the sky was VERY grey and it was just mid-day

7:33 PM
My favourite was the Antec P280 case
!!amazon antec p280

@CanadianLuke That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

Grrr... Why can't it just be psychic...
!!help

@CanadianLuke Information on interacting with me can be found at this page

the case I bought at Best Buy was an Antec something or other
now I have a Corsair Obsidian

7:48 PM
@CanadianLuke Are you trying to encourage birth control? Because you've sold it pretty well to me...

@Mokubai Unless you know you are ready, have been happy with the same partner for years, and have a steady job, most bills paid off, and you KNOW you can handle the kid... I think you shouldn't have kids. There are too many "surprise" pregnancies lately, and it's starting to be a concern. Last time there was such a boom, there was a war to "take care of them"

@CanadianLuke even if you meet all those conditions, I would still suggest that people who are not bound by their religion to "go forth and have kids" should seriously rethink having one at all, or if they do decide to, they should limit their offspring to 1 -- resource exhaustion is a very real problem, and we can stave it off and allow more time for technology to overcome it if we slow down reproduction
people say "it's not our problem, people in Africa are much worse" but they're wrong... reproduction rates in North America and western Europe are still extremely high

Sometimes though, I wish that all pregnancies had to be reported, and both parents take an IQ test... Those who got less than 95% or so shouldn't be allowed the kid. But that's me just being me

Wife and I are happy and have been for many years, kids are still not a certainty at the moment. I'm doing my part for the environment. ;)

And for that, I e-salute you!

7:55 PM
You get a weird sort of peer pressure when you don't have kids and you're getting slightly older. It's very strange...

I know. Apparently, there's an entire psychology chapter about reproducing... Or wanting to

@Mokubai what do you consider "slightly older"?

older than my peers who are now having their second kids. I'm about 4-5 years their senior...

@Mokubai ahh... I often wander if people think about having kids, or rather why to have kids

Pass on the family name, usually
For some, just cash cows

8:09 PM
@Mokubai people who give you that peer pressure are part of the problem. sometimes I snap back at them with witty retorts

@Kate I wasn't meaning to imply a certain age, more a relative one.

@CanadianLuke are you kidding? kids are cash sinks for most people, unless you need additional farm hands and you own 180 acres of land with cows or chickens or something
and once they start making their own money programming or whatever they aren't gonna want to share it with you

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I generally find it easy to ignore, I just find it a bit odd...

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Because the parents split up, and the law is on the mom's side, the moms make thousands off having just a couple kids... At least, in BC they do

@Mokubai you have to consider the source, honestly. ancient religions that command people to reproduce are often the motivation for those kinds of remarks

8:10 PM
@Mokubai no worries, I'm in the same boat though mine might be a little older

to be honest, I feel so strongly about the issue that I'll call people on it
I'll tell them flat out that they shouldn't expect me to follow their religious beliefs
I'm militant about not having kids and taking care of humanity's future by not being a part of the problem
if someone is going to judge me about my choice, I'll judge them about their religion

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ also the environmental impact

@Kate that's part of "taking care of humanity's future by not being a part of the problem", yes

I've read The Omnivore's Dilema, and though a little far fetched at points, it's scary what humans do

certainly someone needs to have kids or the planet will be devoid of humans in a century or so; and I'm really not bothered by people who choose to have one kid to replace two adults, because they are essentially halving the population from their immediate gene pool, which is better than what most people do

8:13 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I don't know how people manage
life is soo darn expensive

@Kate Ever watch Dragon's Den?

the ones that bother me are those that are having more than 1 kid, or worse, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, etc kids

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Therein lies my difference, most people I work with are not religious. It's not an overt "why aren't you having kids?" though, it's like there's a clique or club that you're being politely, but firmly, excluded from because your opinions don't matter because you don't have kids

@CanadianLuke yup, sometimes, when I actually do turn the TV on

your right to swing your fist ends where your fist meets my nose

8:15 PM
Kevin O'Leary writes lots of books... He has one really good one about family. I suggest reading it

I support religious freedom and freedom of religious expression, but I don't support the religion of those who claim their religion tells them to blow up my country
and I don't support the religion of those who claim their religion tells them to have 13 children, either
they're just as bad, but the difference is that the impacts aren't felt until a very long time after they are dead

@CanadianLuke I thank you for the excuse to go to Chapters :D

@Mokubai ah. I've had the actual, up-front, "why aren't you having kids?" thrown at me.

That one!

"we have kids because God wants us to", that kind of stuff

8:17 PM
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Just politely say you don't want the responsibility right now

@CanadianLuke I have a hard time being polite to someone who openly wants to eliminate any hope of humanity having a future past the year 2150 or so

I tear into people when they judge me on not having kids...

I may not want a future for my particular lineage of the gene pool, but I like to think that part of the reason I exist is to help humans as a species exist longer than the next hundred years or so
people need to understand the exponential function -- that's what it all comes down to

I let them go on and on about it... truth is that choice has been made for me so F... OFF

!!youtube "Arithmetic, Population and Energy"

you all should watch that if you haven't already

I'll watch later, I'm at work

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ you might enjoy The Omnivores Dilemma
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I'll have to listen to it on my drive home

the thing that makes me sad is that Nazi Germany and recently Communist China have completely ruined the reputation of anyone who is even remotely within the Malthusian school of philosophy regarding reproduction
they took a stance that was extreme and brutal and cruel, got a lot of hate for it, and in the process of making everyone hate them for it, people also started to hate the academic, politically-neutral, philosophical underpinnings that they drew from

Is that something I can turn to an MP3 and just listen to?

8:23 PM
@CanadianLuke yes, you don't need the graphics -- there are powerpoint slides in the video but just listening will net you all the value you really need to get out of it

@CanadianLuke youtube-mp3.org?

I mean they help but... it's 99% voice, 1% graphics
in many cases he actually reads from the slides most of the figures, so it's all good

@Kate Yup. Just waiting for the conversion...

you know it's bad when you're too tired to get up from the desk to go home :(

Argh, that site only works on videos < 20minutes

8:33 PM
@CanadianLuke flvto.com

Virus alert

@CanadianLuke eich, sorry

It's fine... I'm the admin, so I'm the one who'll get the emails about it

dear CanadianLuke,
User "CanadianLuke" is downloading illegal things!
thanks,
your automated IDS/malware/virus scanner

Nah, just an Urgent message in my email, listing the computers with infections

8:39 PM
I could probably hack something together to download it from youtube and extract the audio on my server, if gateone hadn't crashed :P

@CanadianLuke are mobile service providers as bad in BC as they are in ON?
price wise?

Yea... But you have more choices there
We have Telus, Rogers, Bell, Wind (only in Vancouver), and Fido. We don't get Koodo, for example

@CanadianLuke yeah, but unless you stay in major cities, Koodo has horrible coverage
and apparently Wind is notorious for dropped calls

Telus charges me $43 after being a customer for 20 years, and I only get 400MB data, unlimited texting, nationwide calling anytime, but only 200 daytime minutes.

yeah, I'm with Bell because I live in the boonies and drive up North on a regular basis. Monthly bill for two phones is about $200

8:49 PM
I wonder how bad my throttling will be in October when VZW starts

isn't Verizon reliable?

Is reliable a word you could attribute to any mobile carrier on the American continent?

@Kate sure, they're reliable enough, but that's really irrelevant
I have unlimited data and mobile is my primary internet connection (I have no landline -- can only get crap 7 Mbps ADSL) and they're starting to throttle unlimited users on October 1
if it's severe I'll have to look for another carrier

At least with Telus, I have excellent service here. Apparently, they piggy-back off the Bell towers in Ontario, and Bell piggy-backs off Telus here

yup, that's what I heard
last weekend I saw Bell and Rogers working together :O
they were transporting 3 giant "things" escorted by Bell and Rogers

We will be performing a brief read-only test of our Oregon data center tonight starting around 9 pm EST. We are load testing the configuration there for about 10-15 minutes before moving traffic back to New York. There is no planned downtime during this test, only a period of read-only functionality on the sites.

they made many, many drivers quite unhappy because they had to get power lines lifted

It's just a large monopoly. I'm wishing the CRTC would do something about it (for the Americans: CRTC is the Canadian version of the FCC, except we only care about Canada)

well, so many industries are becoming a game of monopoly
tech, food, energy... take your pick
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I had to work on that kind of connection :P

@Kate what? throttled? or symmetrical 30 MB (when unthrottled)?

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ okay, not throttled but I was lucky if I reached 7Mbps

9:04 PM
hehe

you have no idea how happy I was when Rogers was putting fiber right through our hamlet!!!

gentlemen... as usual, it's been a pleasure... time to enjoy the traffic

See yea

9:36 PM
here's an audio version of the Arithmetic, Population and Energy lecture: tiyukquellmalz.org/ape.ogg

Thanks. Downloading, and I'll try to turn it into an MP3 (so I can listen to it on the bus this weekend)

picky picky... didnt know you needed an mp3

It's fine :P

i can convert it

So can I :) I got Audacity

9:43 PM
@CanadianLuke real men use ffmpeg or gst-launch -_-

Done :)
Oh, you have it done...

also, ogg -> mp3 is more loss than original -> mp3

OK I'll download yours, so you feel better :P
Thanks :-)

then again, libopus is still a much more efficient codec than either mp3 or ogg... for voice it's amazing

Anyone play 'A Dark Room'? I have a weird issue... I have HALF of a weapon...
Ever see that before?

9:50 PM
here's 10 kb/s opus : tiyukquellmalz.org/ape.ogg
file size 1/10th of size of mp3 or vorbis

@CanadianLuke heh

It works too!
Takes up only 3 weight, and still fires!

10:50 PM
HEHEHEHE Maine Coon Kitteh! ^_^

11:11 PM
wtf.... I don't get it
> Dolly was named after Dolly Parton because the cells cloned to make her were from an udder.
is that some kind of weird joke about Dolly Parton? I don't even...
why has nobody caught that... o_o

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Cause boobs?

@random and I were talking about our ongoing issue with outlook password/pst recovery spam.

@nhinkle ugh... I deal with that shit at work as well.
No, we can't open your OST. How did you even find that in the first place?

We're thinking it would be appropriate to have a single canonical post for each of those similar major spam targets: pst recovery, outlook password recovery, and possibly excel/word password recovery.

@MichaelFrank o_O is that information to put in a wikipedia article though?

11:22 PM
There are various questions out there with a lot of views already, but precious few decent answers, and a lot of spam.

@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Is the origin of a name not important? :P

Where we need your help: either somebody(s) who've actually dealt with it before to write some posts about it, or else people to help us identify existing half-decent answers to merge into one canonical post and do some heavy editing on.
Any volunteers? If anybody actually has good experience with this and wants to write up a post, I'll give a large bounty for your efforts.

as enticing as a large bounty is, I don't have enough specific knowledge to do anything

You can google as well as anybody else though @ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ

@nhinkle: hmm. Might make sense to start with meta.

11:28 PM
@MichaelFrank yeah, but the origin is based on some pervy reference that isn't even explained
the way it's stated, it appears to be a non-sequitur
someone needs to explain in the article about the birds and the bees

@JourneymanGeek yeah we'll probably get a meta post up at some point
Was just wondering if anybody here had thoughts on the issue

@nhinkle I think it's a good idea, but I don't have time to contribute D:

@nhinkle: This is the sort of stuff I'd love to do, but I've never had a fubared OST or passworded word file.
outlook password recovery is trivial
good ol nirsoft ;p

@nhinkle go get that old lady that seems to be on EVERY single Outlook forum/website.

@JourneymanGeek you should do one up on that then at least. Or figure out which existing post is most accurate/useful and we can go from there.

11:31 PM
Yeah

hm had one of those moments.
I JUST realised I have a perfectly good mic, and I can use my daw for a sound card
so I don't need to futz around with using my phone mic for video/audio interrviews
