@CanadianLuke heh, there's a lot of truth to the varying degree of quality in wifi tech between enterprise-class and consumer-grade

Yup
We have 3 different SSIDs, with different access to different VLANs, so we have a public and private network setup. Plus, they can handle over 50 clients per AP

as far back as 2004, my former university had on-premises 802.11ab access points covering most buildings, and they provided a degree of connection reliability and speed that I'm only now starting to see on the very latest 802.11ac consumer stuff
they used the same ones for the entire time I was studying there

@MichaelFrank indeed -- he asked that question almost a year ago, and has gotten numerous upvotes, but not even a comment to help him :(
ah, hell with it. I'm going to donate some of the rep I earned today on this bad answer to a bounty to see if we can get some answers on that q

...Why is the top "Prudential Retirement Access" blurred out, but the PRA references under the questions still visible? Silly users!

Hmm. Apparently current moderators can nominate themselves...

@nhinkle that should be a bug on MSE for sure
unfortunately I can't provide a screenshot or reproduce it because I'm not a mod :(
otherwise I'd post it myself

About to go post a bug report.

Q: Elected moderators can nominate themselves

badpThe second round of gaming elections has just started, and I can nominate myself again, despite having won the first round of election. I understand this isn't going to be easy to fix, given that SE only knows about community mods, employees and developer roles, and pro-tempore mods need to be...

Evidently it's by design.
For posterity, I shall copy my eloquent nomination post here:
> I am would like to be modrator. I have many good skill for to delete and questions. If ban user, that good, but user have to go. Please do the needful to vote for me.

...
I tried to comment.
I guess I'll have to just comment here:
ALL HAIL THE FIRST DOUBLE DIAMOND. (/º_º)/ ♦♦

@MichaelFrank I deleted the nomination, so I assume it wouldn't let you comment.

12:33 AM
@nhinkle Yea, you were too fast.

@MichaelFrank also if multi-diamonds were a thing, ChrisF would have had 5 before the Meta split; 4 now. stackexchange.com/about/moderators?by=users

@nhinkle Fair point.

Eh, I'll be back in a bit.

@Bob the usual suspects, and the... well, usual suspects.
@MichaelFrank Evan is the network's resident troll.

@nhinkle I... should have gathered that from his nomination... rambling.

He nominates himself in pretty much every election.

1:04 AM
@nhinkle do you think SE would take some action if he actually got elected somehow?
it's a "Mickey Mouse for President!" type situation

@allquixotic It's so unlikely that he'll ever get elected that it's not really worth talking about, but it's been mentioned once or twice.

Is the election process automated?

@MichaelFrank I'm not sure about the details, but there is a delay between when voting ends and diamonds are handed out. I believe some manual action is required but I don't know what that looks like.

(wild guess) it's probably SE's chance to veto any community elections they view as untenable

maybe that's where EC would be caught and denied
anyone know where I can buy this music legally online? positionmusic.com/album.php?id=134
I can listen to it right there on the page... but I don't want to download it illegally D:

I can neither confirm nor deny what SE's connections to the NSA are, and how they would or would not (if they do or do not exist) be used in the event of an EC Election situation.

@allquixotic Still blocked, probably at the minus.com domain level.

"Just don't tell us what you do"

our local guys are even funnier. I was "allowed" to install Cygwin without so much as a sniff test, but updating Nvidia drivers from Q2 2010 are a big !!no

@Bob I'm working for a bank currently. Can you imagine the policies needed here? I had to request approval to install a USB > VGA adapter today, because it's not an approved practise to have 3 monitors on your computer.

let me see, which grumpy no is this one..
!!no

ah yes, the one I like. where her bottom lip is buttoned up tight, like, "Nope. Sorry."
@MichaelFrank you're allowed to request approval for installing USB -> VGA adapters? it's not standard practice to have 3 monitors here, either, but if I requested approval for it, they would most likely ignore my request
also, just ordering such a device would probably cost $2000 and take 6 months
and they would want to "get one for everybody" (upping the cost to $200,000) even if they got permission to do it
this organization doesn't believe in individual needs

2:18 AM
@allquixotic Yep. Provided I do some testing to make sure it's not going to do anything bad -_-
@allquixotic i3s and 2GB for everyone?

@MichaelFrank 4 GB, but you're spot on with the i3. Sandy Bridge i3.

Bob
that reminds me, I need to request more RAM

I requested more RAM once. I was told that they don't have budget to upgrade everyone's RAM, and they don't want to give anyone special hardware so they wouldn't do it just for me.

@Bob Just download it from that site everyone knows about.

apparently we're going to be upgraded to IE 9 (wow!) and Windows 7 64-bit (double wow!) some time later this year
Office 2013 is budgeted for next year
probably won't drop Windows 7 until 2017-2018 though

2:22 AM
@allquixotic We're one step ahead of you there! We're using 7x64, but still on IE8. :<

@MichaelFrank they claim they hang on to ancient browsers forever for "security", yet the exact opposite effect occurs because IE 8 has a lot of long-standing security issues that will never be fixed :)

Bob
ie11 here. With 7, 8 on an xp vm

@allquixotic thats crasy, why would a office worker doing word processing have any requirement for the same computer as (say) the video department. Or CAD design team, or even various developers who would understand such hardware.

Bob
had to test our webapp on 11... that broke a lot of shit

IT people who make those decisions should be forced to live in the same size room as their child (no enlarged master bedroom) and should be forced to make minimum wage "because it's enough for everybody"

2:25 AM
@allquixotic I guess that's common sentiment with upgrading browsers. I imagine the app team would need to do a hell of a lot of testing to ensure that all current systems will work with a newer browser.

@Psycogeek I never said it made sense. they're idiots. absolute imbeciles.
@MichaelFrank nonsense -- IE's backwards compatibility is excellent, as long as you aren't in Metro mode
if it somehow didn't work with some decrepit app written in 2005, they should tell that app team to update their damn app
> You've earned the "Sportsmanship" badge. See your profile.

closing in on satisfying all the election badges ;-)

Bob
@allquixotic the backwards compatibility broke in 11 -_-

@Bob Windows 8.1 Update 1 apparently improved the IE 8 compatibility mode of IE 11 Desktop.
(or so I read in a KB article)

Bob
2:31 AM
It won't satisfy the tag telling it to drop to 7, but won't take the webkit and moz css either
@allquixotic we (and most customers) are on 7
no win8 here, except in my vm
oh, and a couple laptops

I dislike Windows 8 for how our school district uses it

@CanadianLuke How do they use it? Randomly? Incorrectly?

Well, on Surface Pros. But the tech department decided to block all the fancy Windows 8 features (logging in with MS account, using the store, etc) in order to make it line up with our notebook policy. So their reaction?
They look like idiots leaning over on their desk swiping left and right for 20 minutes per day

the only correct way to use Windows 8 is to use Windows 8.1 Update 1 with boot to desktop and the start menu (-ish) back, or Start8 installed

@allquixotic That reminds me, I must install Start8 and MetroMix when I get home.

2:37 AM
I never understood swiping, thought it was an apple thing, now I are one :-) used to be one press of a button did the same thing as a swipe. I got used to it fast, and it is a great way to scroll. I never got used to a trackpad either, even after forcing myself to use it.
One example of button vrses swipe, the buttons would be out of the users viewport, swipe is putting my fat fingers in the view.

@Psycogeek It's not often you'll be viewing important info AND swiping at the same time.

It's painful

@MichaelFrank well nothing i do is important :-) but why wouldnt a person want to see while they are swiping?

The tablets cost $990, then $110 for the typing cover, then $50 for the Mini-DP to VGA adapter, $100 for the monitor, $25 for the 4-port non-powered USB hub that doesn't work properly, and $20 for the keyboard/mouse. Plus, since we aren't a MS-certified repair shop (we've got a contract with Dell), we can't fix it!
Whereas the notebook with a bigger screen, and most of what a user needs built in, is only $600
Plus, 3 year warranty with our Dell machines

@CanadianLuke are these Surface Pro 1s?

2:42 AM
Yup

ugh

The two principals at my school. They feel they know technology more than the tech
I inherited quite a mess... That's why I have so much rep on SF and Unix.SE

I mean, a Surface Pro 2 is a nice device, but it sounds like the way you have them deployed is quite horrid

2:45 AM
Well, we also don't have MS servers, so I can't deploy them the way MS wants us to
We have Clonezilla (a special version that boots off USB), and have to store the image on a USB drive. So it's one at a time
The notebooks, we can use Clonezilla or Fog, netboot them, and have them imaged to the desktop in under 15 minutes

@CanadianLuke And those are cooly and totally walk around portable too right? So how many of them move off the desks , or are used portably?

AND the Fog images automatically sign them into the domain
NONE
Cause that department does so much typing, they're useless

@CanadianLuke Well then be sure to get promoted to the purchacing department, sounds like there is a lot of perks :-)

Purchasing is pissed too though
Politics, politics, politics!

One of my friends got promoted to purchacing at a gov place, and he was exstatic, which was odd because he was always hands-on kinda person. He liked it because of having been cut off from funding his projects for so long . . . duhh that he no longer does? I guess there was more to it.

@allquixotic If he knew what it looked like inside there when installing catalyst drivers , he would have a backup of the system first :-) Let alone when trying to remove it all.

@allquixotic I had an issue recently with my Func gaming mouse. Win8 would refuse to pick up the mouse unless the drivers were installed first.

Q: Why is DNS the first thing to go when my connection is busy?

Trevor AlexanderIt seems like whenever I have reached the apparent limits of my download/upload rate (or just been throttled), the first thing that will start to slow or timeout completely is DNS lookups. Normally I would just chalk that up to DNS being the first request needed to do most activities, but what's ...

Do DNS connections stay "half open" like other connections can? I never paid much attention to them, when looking at the other connections.
Because i think the answer (actually opinion) falls along the lines of the other "connections" are already made, and a new call for DNS is a new connection.

I super wish my touchscreen pc didn't have a broken touchscreen panel :(
I would 100% install Hearthstone on it and frame it on the wall.

@MichaelFrank luckily lots of people break em, so there is usually a replacement avilable and even instructions.

@Psycogeek Yea, I've got no issue with replacing it, but finding a replacement has proven difficult.

Well if you have to get it replaced by manufacture/seller company, then the wall it is :-)
Some things get amazing prices for broken on e-bay, but it is likely the ones where it is known that the broken part has replacement.
EX: who would pay $150 for a broken screen phone, when it is $250 for the non broken. It was because the part could be found for $70. Still not worth it for me.

@allquixotic You probably could if you got into OCTGN.

I had an amazing run with my f2p priest deck the other day. from 24 to 17 without a loss. :)

I have some neat ideas for interesting cards
a 3/1 Timid Fox for 3 mana -- card text -- Charge. When enemy plays a minion, return to owner's hand.
you can play it out to deal 3 damage but the enemy can only kill it with spells or minions that are already set up on the board :)
probably be useful if you can maintain board control and keep pecking away at the enemy's hp

@allquixotic I like that card idea.

3:55 AM
how about a complement to the Lightwell, but with a twist: Bonfire: 0/4 for 3 mana. Card text: At the end of your turn, lose 1 Maximum Health, and add 1 Maximum Health to all other friendly minions.

I'd be interested in more items being in the game. Coming from playing the actual TCG, I think all heroes should have some form of equipment that can use.

or... how about a new neutral creature...
Alert Watchman: 3/3 for 3 mana -- card text: Prevent the next enemy creature with Charge from attacking on the same turn they are played.
(the card text "burns out" after one charge creature is stopped, to prevent it from being OP)

The origin of the name Test stems from the long, gruelling match being a "test" of the relative strength of the two sides. The first officially recognised Test match began on 15 March 1877, between England a...

@allquixotic What I'm considering ^ did I miss anything?
Though, I might see if I can hammer the RPi into submission first (read: get it to work)

@Bob Sweet. that computer costs less than the power it would take (in Ca) to run it.

Bob
@Psycogeek No, it doesn't (well, depends how long you're talking about).
The power brick is rated 65W max.
Idling? Maybe 10W?
Under $100 in electricity for a year.

10:52 AM
we pay as much as 35cents Per Kw for tier 4 power here, with tier 3 power at about 31 this month.

Bob
@Psycogeek ...
20c/kwh off-peak, 40c/kwh shoulder, 60c/kwh peak here

some states get the same stuff for 7cents

Bob
That translates to about 56c/kwh USD peak
Still, that totals to $228 for a year at absolute max of 65W.
And it's not like I'm going to be running the thing at max.
As a router, it would be idle/near-idle most of the time.
An ADSL connection's max throughput doesn't use much CPU power.

11:06 AM
@Bob does anybody (yet) put a nice 6-7" screen on a normal router, soes a person can see what the little computer is doing in there?
If it has a 65W power supply, it certannly wouldnt be using 65Watts even after the usual inefficency.
@Bob We had a power plan here for some time that costs way more at peak, and way less (less then normal) at off peak. Worked out great as i would just turn everything off and go to sleep :-) on peak hours.

11:44 AM
@Bob lol :)
@Bob Wanna blow something up? ... My career, that is!
@Bob not anymore! it basically just sits there now. -_- it was good while it lasted but i decided i prefer having the phone itself run wifi -- lower latency and such -- so I ponied up $30/month to Verizon so they'll let me legally use their unlimited wifi tethering >:D
hell i have half a mind to sell my NUC to you! because although it's a fantastic little linux boxy woxy, i already have a desktop more than capable of multi-booting, plus my surface pro and yoga 2, so i don't even have the "instant-on" excuse anymore

Bob
@allquixotic Well, did it work well while it lasted?

@Bob perf-wise, sure -- the box I have is considerably over-specced for the task of "being router" -- the only sucky part is setting it up to be a wifi router using hostapd, because it's just not easy, software-wise

Bob
I'm just trying to get the Pi to work.
@allquixotic I don't even need the wireless side :S

but you can't blame the hardware for hard to use software
@Bob even better then! :D

Bob
I just need a gateway that can perform traffic shaping.
The problem is getting that to work with just one eth port.
Can't use pfSense on a Pi, either.

11:48 AM
rpi probably doesn't have enough throughput

Bob
@allquixotic enough for ADSL

O RITE. ADSL.
in that case, sure

Bob
lol
I can't fit a full-size computer near the routers/modem
@allquixotic So - was yours pure wireless?
pfSense seems to be the de facto standard custom router OS, but it's BSD
And I'm obviously more familiar with Linux :\
Hmm...
@Psycogeek eh, I do it remotely (SSH), but I could attach a screen if I wanted
oh wait, a normal router?
hrm.
some do have status displays
@Psycogeek Ya, the CPU has a max TDP of 17W.
mSATA SSD, DDR3L RAM... altogether? maybe another 5W. Add 2W for the wifi card? And 5-10W for the mobo?
And that's assuming it's all very inefficient

@Bob yea

Bob
Realistically, I'd expect it to consume no more than 15W while idle.
And that's pushing it.

12:01 PM
@Bob Are you going to run for mod as well?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Nah.
At least, I don't think so o.O

an SSD uses less than 1 watt in the ready state even, some intel and samsungs only .3 watts still in the ready state, and most of them <4w maxed running. a 3.5in HD can take 2x that just idleing.

Bob
We've got plenty of good candidates, and I don't really help out enough (review queues, closing, editing) to be a mod.
Maybe next time. Maybe.
@Psycogeek Huh, that's less than I expected.
It's an Intel 30GB mSATA SSD. Probably uses close to nothing idle.

I was just looking, the averaging out of it for normal running, is barely any power. so normal use in spurts, would average out way lower than the 4W

Bob
Still, it'll probably use more power than the RPi.
Along with the initial cost, that's why I want to try to get the RPi to do this first.

@allquixotic Poor Druid... He had a 6/6 Taunt/Divine Shield, 7/5 Taunt, and another 6/6. He's also sitting on 1 health.

I have a 3/3, a 5/5, and a 2/1.

Zero cards in hand. I topdeck Fireball. GG.

wow. for a second, I thought Ramhound might be a mod candidate, but then I realized that most of his involvement is comments and low-voted answers... only 3k rep o_o

So my drive on my server is mounted as noexec apparently
/etc/fstab is just
LABEL=DOROOT / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
what do I do?

@CBenni what evidence do you have that it's mounted as noexec?

Thats just what I found when searching, I get "permission denied" as root

that doesn't mean it's necessarily noexec. it may be read-only (ro) due to a FS error.
what does mount say?

mount gives me pastebin.com/rwtvfNF9
well, I can execute pretty much anything, just bash scripts wont work in /var
I might just go chmod it to 777

try mount -o remount,exec,rw /
(as root)

1:55 PM
what exactly does that do, it remounts with exec and rw rights, on / ?
:D

@CBenni yes, it asks the FS to attempt to enable read-write and allowing the execution of binaries on the FS
although you may want to then determine the reason why it got mounted read-only or noexec in the first place

Bob
@CBenni Tip: never ever ever do that.

it wasn't mounted read-only or noexec by fstab, so most likely the FS encountered a read error and remounted itself read-only as a protection mechanism

well, its a server on DigitalOcean

try looking at dmesg

1:57 PM
it must have been like that from the very beginning

Bob
@CBenni You can always try a fsck (after appropriate backups).

...or a read-only fsck, which is always safe

eh, crap. how do I kill the current running process in a shell? ^C is getting caught

but according to ext4 (last I recall), their read-only fsck, while safe, may not return correct results if the FS is mounted
@CBenni try ^Z

aw great, thanks ^.^

1:58 PM
i forget the command to kill the background job, i usually use kill -9 on the pid once i get back to the shell
the job you just ^Z'ed out of is still running

Bob
@allquixotic kill -9 $!

ah, lemme look at my process list

Q: linux: kill background task

flybywireHow do I kill the last spawned background task in linux? Example: doSomething doAnotherThing doB & doC doD #kill doB ????

@Bob yeah but i thought there was a way to get rid of a background job that didn't involve using the kill command

Bob
but that's after a bg

1:59 PM
I am rather new to unix...

a bash builtin of some description
@Bob bg and ^Z are functionally equivalent, AFAIK
