we probably need to get a mod to let the editor know he's overenthusiastic

Call of Civic Duty

@slhck there is no rule when it comes to profanity :P

Well, we have EC in our election now :(

lol

I thought he didn't have enough rep. I was wrong.

> After 7 days, the top 30 nominees,

I hope that doesn't have any effect on my nomination.

so you need 19 more candidates then
@jokerdino why would it?

6:21 AM
lol @ your comment ;p
@Sathya I don't know. EC brings in controversy and distracts people.

hmm
could raise it with @shog9

I think he would still get weeded out in the primaries.

@jokerdino Please become a mod!

@Manishearth It's not in my hands, heh

Nor in mine, not enough rep :P

6:25 AM
lol, just 50 more :P

@jokerdino He has enough rep on all sites to nom
@jokerdino 44

@Manishearth Ta and ta.
Bad guy he is.
Uhm, power cut time. Back in 2 hours or so.

cya
good luck!

thanks :)

Anyone familiar with IPIP tunnels here?

@Bruce not me..

I have broadband access in my house. I have a DLink DAP 1350 Pocket Router connected to it. But it only gives me enough range for a room. I have a old DSL Modem Router with RJ11 input. Can I somehow use this DSL modem with my internet connection? I can then use my Pocket router as a repeater for my wireless signal for boosting it

Phone -> DSL modem -> Pocket Router. Seems legit. What's stopping you?

@Sathya No. I do not have a phone connection for a input. I have broadband access in my house. And I have RJ45 input

and how do you have this "broadband" access? Cable? FTTH?

6:57 AM
Ethernet -> DSL modem -> Pocket Router
What is FTTH?

who's your ISP?

I have a ethernet socket in my house where I can plug in ethernet cable or modem router
Five Network in mumbai

then no.

You have a DSL modem. Your ISP isn't a DSL provider.

7:02 AM
Can I do it with a RJ11 to RJ45 converter?

no

stick this wire into that completely unrelated connector! it'll work!

@Bob hehe

@allquixotic Just tried, no luck :(
the disk doesn't have a write protect switch... double checked! Going to take it apart in case there is an internal one that has become nocked

@WilliamHilsum looks like your drive is f'kd

@Sathya and yet all green/surface test passes great!!! I've never seen this before... crazy
@Sathya also, low level format didn't work... wonder if I can manually hex edit the first few sectors of the disk or something :/

I swear I sw this post where some dude did some hex edit magic, to fix the same thing you're having.. can't recall. Will check later

@Sathya pulling out a knife... going to open this drive up!
I see where I think a write protect switch should be, but, certainly not there/jumper not complete

Bob
10:24 AM
@WilliamHilsum what is this?
try another OS? :\

A: Did I screw up my USB stick? And if not, how can I fix it?

DennisConsidering what you've already tried, there are only three possible solutions I can think of: The HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool 2.2.3 does a low-level format. It can format some USB flash drives that other tools cannot. Some flash drives have an almost invisible write-protect switch that can...

sounds familiar...

A: Why did my flash drive become "read only" and (how) can I fix it?

CholYou can try to use a tool from the chip manufacturer Alcor. You can find it via Google, the name is "AlcorMP_5T2F_6T2F_2011-11-10.02". There, you first open LoadDriver.exe and enter your VID and PID (you can find out these values by using ChipGenius, or using Linux and typing "lsusb -v") and cl...

actually, sounds like exactly the same situation o.O

yeah, very - thanks
device id is 0b38 - gear head :/ Looked on their site... not sure I can get anywhere as they dont appear to make usb sticks, just enclosures, and, im not sure which one I have

Q: Can I connect a DSL modem to Ethernet broadband connection?

srikanth chandrasekaranI have a ethernet port in my house for my broadband connection given by my ISP. I have a Dlink DAP 1350 Pocket Router connected to it. @jokerdino: EC hasn't signed the ubuntu COC I hope ;p

@JourneymanGeek What's EC and COC? :D
I don't know Google...

@OliverSalzburg Evan Carrol and Code of Conduct
The former is a... well known user of Stack Exchange sites, the latter additional rules applying to Ubuntu.SE

@DanielBeck That sounds incredibly plausible :D
Thanks :)

yup
is standing for thos elections, by the way
might lose, but I figure If i do, better people won, and its a good trial run for our next election ;p

@JourneymanGeek just noticed you put in a nomination

12:09 PM
Yeah, entirely on a whim ;p
and I guess it means I can help out there too ;p

how in the world do you have less rep than me over at Ask Ubuntu

lol
not been using ubuntu on a desktop until recently >_>

I attribute the repz to suggested edits :P

I really hate doing that ;p
I fix stuff that I see, but feels like cheating ;p

A: Permanently delete files from a flash drive

John B Delphia IIIhere's a method i've cooked up after reading all these answers. first, delete the target folder/file. find a safe file that is just under 100Mb in size, open a folder called "erase1" and place it there. find out the amount of remaining free file space, divide this by three and then figure out h...

what the what

actually thats a fairly common idea
just that secure erase methods do that more easily

@JourneymanGeek haha. let me check on that.
> "EvanCarroll has never signed a code of conduct." YMMV.

12:40 PM
@Sathya There, I fixed it \o/
...what a waste of energy

@OliverSalzburg .. brb, upping some of your answers :D

lol

12:57 PM
Why is there never enough horizontal space in the left column of MMC O__O

mmc ?

Management something

That thing
And you have to place the mouse exactly on a 1-wide pixel line to adjust the column width
...in Remote Desktop where you don't get updating mouse cursors

Brrr. I just answered a question which came down to this ugly kludge:

Microsoft Management Console..
@OliverSalzburg Even on Wide Screens ?

12:59 PM
@HackToHell The column never expands by itself, only the main (right) panel

PLug in USB drive, create a file with dd. Loopback that file. Create a mirror on the loopback with mdadm. ... do quite some magic with scripts on hotplug detect.... Welcome to full disk backups.

@OliverSalzburg ah, it's annoying then :P

"Why the Unified Installer? Why Not System Packages" (...) Zope/Plone is very picky about the version of Python used to run it, and an update of the system Python when some other item is installed can easily break Zope/Plone. At this point, you may be thinking that this just means that the packages have poorly specified dependencies

@ruda.almeida ...yeah, maybe :D

No, at this point I'm thinking how simple is to install WordPress and for plone I have to friggin *compile* `Python, Zope, and key required libraries from
source`. Sigh.

1:03 PM
@ruda.almeida You're the second person I know that uses Plone

@OliverSalzburg I don't. I use Wordpress (actually I'm getting a bit rusty, used it last last year (is that sentence correct? English can be weird)). But I'm entusiastic about it.
Now my boss heard Plone is quite secure and wants it to be the CMS of choice for our department
Plone has a good record on vulnerabilities, but I'm not sure if I want to learn a new CMS instead of improving my average knowledge on WordPress (average as in I never developed a theme or plugin, that would be cool)
I hope that developing themes and plugins for plone is 10.000 times more complicated than for wordpress, so I can advocate WP over Plone for my boss =)
I'm already witnessing how weird is the installing process
You have to have the exact versions of python, zope, libraries, etc, can't update them, can't use the packages system...
have to compile everything by hand

Compiling stuff by hand should not be a problem.
Just make a package of the compiled stuff so you can deinstall it later
But exact versions? Brr

@Hennes Never done it before
@Hennes How do I "make a package of the compiled stuff so you can deinstall it later"?
I'm building a minimal CentOS VM for testing

Depends on afew things. For started, which package do you want? .deb? .rpm ?

@Hennes CentOS uses .rpm, right?

1:11 PM
Yes

@ruda.almeida: easy, crappy way - get checkinstall
then replace make install with checkinstall

(As Journeyman already said)

I know I know, I need not remember a 100 passwords now

1:14 PM
@HackToHell I prefer KeePass with a easyly remembered long password phrase.
Changed from about 3 passwords I used everywhere
(and had lost track on how many actual sites)

Heh
A year ago a finally got a good solution to keep people from reusing passwords.

to a single KeePass database synced at work (ubuntu), home (windows) and my android phone and tablet , synced via dropbox
gave me a lot of work but now it's flawless amazing

Simple examples such as: 1) Come to my site, sign up for free. I will NOT send you spam. I will just let you create an account after which you can download some songs for free.

my default settings

1:17 PM
2) Check that username and password against well know sites. (e.g. hotmail, faceborg)
If one of them is a working email log in, ask for a password reset on every other site. See the new password trickle into the mailbox
3) Profit
Most people suddenly reconsider using the same password after I explained that theoriticl scenario

lol
yeah

I don't get it. (1)People create an account on your site using a common email addres . (2) You go to facebook, provide that email, ask for password reset. (3) the reset request goes to that email.

How do you access their email account?
Unless they reuse the same password on the email provider and your site and... oh.

No, they provide what should have been a new username and password
But 1) they often reuse the same password
and 2) They often use the same username.
E.g. If I get ruda123 and pass 123456, then I try ruda@gmail.com, ruda123@hotmail.com etc etc until I find one which works.

I have three classification of sites, low priority ones have the same password

Yep
Someone actually tested this and wrote a paper on it
and a few month later the belgians did something equally fun at Brussels train station.
Stop people, ask for a bit of time on a questionairy on security. Tell them that they should NOT tell them their password

1:27 PM
@HackToHell I had the same, but over the years I lost track on how many sites I had and sometimes priorities changes, and sometimes I had to change passwords on a singles site and then it was not the same password for all low priority sites

Ask a few questions (2-4)
And finally ask them if they used 'password1' as their password. about half of them answered. "No, I use this_password"

@ruda.almeida yeah, some sites require different password lengths and other stuff, I save them in Chrome or ff

The "oauth issue", aka "a lot of sites now accept facebook or twitter as a login credential" makes stuff much more complicated for personal security
/me (installing centos on my vm)
Right now I have 275 entries on my KeePass database.
Two or three are temp entries with multiple passwords that I need to clean up.
And all the time I come accross a forgotten website where I had an account
CentOS installer don't let me user "123" as root password =/

@Hennes looks like I'll be another day or 2t that power supply bevore I ge
damn netbook keyboard

Ah
/me curses t-mobile

1:37 PM
another day or 2 before I get that psu, guy has over 1000 of em and hasn't had time to go through them all yet for a 250

Old email hpassmann@tycoint.com (no longer exists)
Enter new email ass Name+tmobile@isp.nl
And they change the first three letters of the first mail address

@Hennes huh?

Yeah, that was my reaction.
How do that manage to only change part of an email address when I fill in a completely new mail address ?

I once started developing the habit of registering on different sites using different "+stuff" email. myemail+facebook@gmail.com, myemail+twitter@gmail.com and so on

Aye. thT WAY YOU CAN TRACK THE SOURCE OF SPAM
Damn, capslock

1:41 PM
@Hennes Abandoned the idea when once I managed to register on a site using an address with a "+" on it, BUT I COULDN'T LOGIN AFTERWARDS

Well, that site fault for not escaping user entered fields (+ and rubyonrails is fun)

a.k.a. "let's filter out characters only on login but not on registration, awesome idea"

vmware did the same
I hope that someday they got a professional website

or "let's not properly use urldecode()" or whatever
Hm, CEntOS is installed on my VM, network configures as NAT on the VM, can't ping 8.8.8.8
How do I manually configure the network card on CentOS?
There's no eth0 on ifconfig, only lo
Hm, found it. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<device>

yay, I did a 2 way fan swap today

1:57 PM
@JourneymanGeek Is that like a triple bypass in computering terms?

@OliverSalzburg: installed one of these into my own desktop. Took the fan from the cosair case I use, and installed it in the old desktop, so it dosen't sound like a small factory

No connection on CentOS, I'm having to manualy edit the config files using vi, there's not even vim available. sigh.

OK, network is up. Now let's install gcc, g++, make, tar, bzip2 and gzip.
gcc alone asks for a 37 MB download

I create a GPO with 6 firewall rules in it. All Windows clients only apply 4 rules and act as if there's nothing wrong with it. gpresult lists it as if there were only 4 rules
And whenever I create a copy of a firewall rule and edit it, MMC hangs
The joy of AD

2:15 PM
How can my work connection be so SLOOOOOW

@ruda.almeida Try blocking Reddit ;D

From 9am till 4pm: I get 35~150 kbps
At night or on holidays:

Based on my experience: Block internet radio streams. Performance problems solved. :)

@OliverSalzburg REddit is not popular outside Us, I guess. Or at least not on my country. But there's a secondary building on a nearby campus, it's a shared 2mbps for 500 machines. My boss configures firewall rules on pfsense (or was it snort?), and on the top 10 sites, there were www.facebok.com, facebook.com, m.facebook.com, cdn.facebook.com, etc etc etc ;-)
About 80~90% of bandwidth was facebook =P

2:23 PM
Well, out for lunch. See you later!

Alright, now I re-created my GPO from scratch and it works

Well, if you wanted consistent logical results then you should not use computers.

So the way to solve your AD problems is, repeat until it works. Then act like nothing happened

Aye

2:40 PM
> "There is a great deal of ignorance about (and prejudice against) JavaScript, which is often regarded as an incomplete toy language rather than the elegant and sparse language that it actually is."
If that isn't a great starter for a flame war, I don't know

@OliverSalzburg ooh. source?
or non SE?

3:22 PM
@OliverSalzburg lol That's a stretch...

@TomWijsman :D

@mods The Blog Editor room is closed again...

Any idea?

@Boris_yo Maybe it means you're ready to share images from InstantUpload
@Luke Should be fixed

User: "Teh Interwebz are slow!" Me: /installs chrome on terminal server wheee happy day =D

Also see how I tricked Bugzilla into thinking that Super User is a Trac bug in the See Also section. ^^

5:16 PM
@TomWijsman Win.
That's pretty awesome.

@TomWijsman Nice :D

It won't take any not-a-bug URL, although yeah, I think I can use #.../ticket/... for that as well.

GUI, filling up your disk since 1981.

In computing, graphical user interface (GUI) is a type of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices using images rather than text commands. GUIs can be used in computers, hand-held devices such as MP3 players, portable media players or gaming devices, household appliances, office and industry equipment. A GUI represents the information and actions available to a user through graphical icons and visual indicators such as secondary notation, as opposed to text-based interfaces, typed command labels or text navigation. The actions are usually performed through di...

I used a Sliverlight based MongoDB administration tool yesterday. It was like 3MB

I find it funny how GNOME Shell and Gentoo Linux's Portage ended up in that page... :D
@OliverSalzburg But... That uses .NET Framework and Silverlight!
Though yeah, that's a nice comparison of how code-based GUI is heavy whereas framework reused XAML-based (compressible!) GUI is light in terms of disk space.
And well, it might even have nothing to do with the GUI, would be nice to analyze why exactly it is using that much.

@TomWijsman SQL Server Management Studio seems to require .NET Framework as well. And it's not included in the download from what I can tell

Hmm, I think that could have been used for calling Powershell like commands, like a lot of server administration stuff by MS.

5:41 PM
There's a SDK component in the setup

Not sure what that is needed for...

@TomWijsman Me neither :D
I only need this tool to change 1 configuration parameter
Ok, seems like a lot of the space is used on dependencies
There's a visualstudioshell folder that's like 300 MB
Okay... now I know what the Visual Studio Shell is
That explains a lot of the file size

6:06 PM
@TomWijsman nice... at least he actually filed the bug

@OliverSalzburg What's that going to mean for "us"?
And by us I mean my small company that relies entirely on Dell for desktops? =D

@Tanner Don't know, but a lot of money is involved in the process
I guess they want to make sure that they can adjust to "the new world" without shareholder interference
Which can be either good or bad - depending on the outcome :D
Awesome picture :D

@Arto The way your question is phrased it requires way too much knowledge about the specific products
But I doubt it's actually necessary

6:33 PM
Hmm, Is there a better place to ask it?

@Arto I'm confused about what you're even asking

@Tanner I am asking how to get my superuser account back, because now I cant give admin rights or do new channels.

@OliverSalzburg 25,000 64GB microSD cards (1.6 PB) for $1.2 million :D :D

Hey guys, is there anything a low-rep user can do to vote to unclose? (superuser.com/questions/544982/…)

@allquixotic I like the idea of having that sit in the corner in my office like a penny jar :D
@Arto Using the term "superuser" on a website named "superuser" can be a problem ;D

6:41 PM
Yeh, I know that could be a problem, but thats the default username on it hehe

@MarcusChan: state a case on meta

@JourneymanGeek Mmk

even high rep users do it that way

the terminology is "reopen" btw
@OliverSalzburg good luck building a RAID array out of 25,000 card readers :D

@OliverSalzburg whoooaaaa. got it. the superuser. xD

6:45 PM
reminds me of the isolinear circuits on the enterprise on ST:TNG

@allquixotic :D

Data would take them out and rearrange them with inhuman speed

I see you can host webpages on Drive now googledrive.com/host/0B716ywBKT84AMXBENXlnYmJISlE/…

14 posts queued for gemsfromstaackexchange :D

@allquixotic Just hire some people <strike>Indians</strike> china to swap all the cards.

@Hennes it's ---
for strike

Ah
That is why my older attemps with ___ kept failing

I finally just put it in my Evernote. I think I'm in the Sandbox four different times trying to figure it out. xD
@allquixotic Started using VNC to control the VMs instead of VMWare Workstation. Now I'm loving it even more lol

7:36 PM
Is it legitimate to ask a developer to show some progress before paying?

@Joseph Why would you be paying before you receive the product? :D
But, yes, it is legitimate.

EXACTLY! I have a developer saying he won't start until he's paid in advance
But then again, how do I have any guarantee he's not gonna run off with the money

@Joseph Oh, he won't even start :D
I don't think we ever get paid in advance.

Yea, exactly, he's in india too, not like I could even do anything if he runs away with it.

Alex Miller on February 05, 2013

Welcome to Stack Exchange Podcast #42 – it’s our usual gang back this week with Joel, Jay, David, and Producer Alex.  There’s plenty of inside baseball, so put on your rally caps and make sure to stick it through to the end!

David Mamet, apparently. Jay was a drama major.

Michael forgot to pay the Google bill, so our hangouts are back down to 10 person limits (but its fixed now!)

We have one big thing to talk about that made a change and generated controversy. Joel correctly guesses what it is: we no longer display your accept rate (the percentage of questions you asked that you accepted an answer for). …

8:41 PM
@Joseph Trust is an important corner stone of any (business) relationship. ;)
If you don't have that, why even hire him?

A: Why does `tar -xvfz` fail, but `tar xvfz` work?

GeekRidetar has 3 types of syntax (according to this ): long options (--file) short options (-f) old options (f) For the old option syntax, all the letters must follow "tar" and must all fall into a single clump with no spaces. The order of the letters doesn't really matter, so long as the arguments ...

Sweet knowledge!

@Tanner That's in the question ;D

Is it? hahaha
haha ewwhite put it there. nice.

9:00 PM
Wow, the KeePass ad looks really weird in the dark SU theme O__O

Screenie?

The thing is, there's CSS3 animation in the dark theme and that's part of it :P

@OliverSalzburg Looks like from a 90ies hackers website.

@slhck :D
In the dark theme, I've put a background behind all img to work around transparent images, but it's still weird often
What the what?

Q: Blank screen if kids yell too much

Leonid VolnitskyMy kids (4 and 5) yell a lot when playing games on computer. I found an effective cure for this. I ssh into game computer and do: chvt 3; sleep 15; chvt 7 when I hear loud noises. This will turn off screen for 15 seconds on linux. I've told them that computer doesn't like loud noises. They ...

802??
It's the highest voted question we have

Pretty crazy huh

9:08 PM
By far!
It even beats "What are the Windows A: and B: drives used for?"

Didn't even have to delete soooo many off topic answers and comments.
But now our top question isn't even a question.

And check this! Holy shit!

(In the title, at least)

That's effing awesome.

9:10 PM
And the question is on today's newsletter

Will probably reach 1000 at some point
Hahaha, our cat's the best

9:25 PM
@OliverSalzburg How did that even happen? O_o 91k views?

@Tanner Well. Hacker News, other news sites, probably on Twitter. It's still in the Hot Questions list, …

Flippin' ridiculous

9:41 PM
Oh, new style for popup boxes.

@slhck What, what, what?

Something is weird with our buttons...
I think all buttons got new styles
And... were our main navigation buttons unbolded?

@OliverSalzburg Could be yeah. I don't know because of the custom style.

Looking at old screenshots... seems like it
I used that for comparison
I should keep full-page reference shots of each month handy ;P

9:49 PM
I made those buttons grey again.

9:59 PM
whoot
qbittorent seems to work quite well

10:45 PM
@OliverSalzburg /me hits F5, sees them unbold; yes, definitely. :D
