12:00 AM
Sigh. Can you help me choose a microSD card? I can't seem to find a good one.

I have no recent experience with those

I'd love to see somebodies employer come in for a tour and see all their hardware sitting in lego

When I did buy mine I looked up the reviews. One sec.... looking.....

Buy a lexar, cheap, good quality

It would be nice if it could come from Newegg, since it'll save me the shipping if I order it with the rest of my things.

I am going to do the semi helpful yet frustrating thing:

If you're willing to wait dealextreme does free shipping world wide

advise: think what you want from a card (read speed, write speed, random access?) then read those reviews.

@user88311 and they're all raspberry pis

12:03 AM
Then see if the card which matches your desires is on sales at Newegg or elsewhere

Dealextreme? Never heard of that.
Also uhm. Yeah, reading the reviews.

Hmm, someone was right about the screen nethack question.
12
A: GNU Screen on MacOS 10.8 says "Be careful! New screen tonight"

HennesYou are using screen with the option #NETHACK defined. Nethack is a old text based game with many surprising twists, including dependency on the phase of the moon. (It checks the date, if it is full moon the in game were-monsters are stronger). Screen has an option to translate some of the nor...

@Hennes Actually... what exactly should I want in terms of specs from a MicroSD card for my phone? oo'

If you just listen to the songs. Sequential write speed (to fill the card with songs. I am pretty sure all will read fast enough to play them). If you also use it to copy files, sequential read and write speed.
Burst speeds is not important (it is in camara's)

12:08 AM
Well, copying songs will be pretty rare. Once a big pack, and then a little update once in a blue moon. So it'll do two things. Run apps and play songs.

And if you are not going to use it a an OS disk (e.g. in a rPie) then random access speed nd IOPS are less important.
In that case buy the cheapest one and just spent a minute waiting when you first fill it with music
I used mine for a time as pendrive. Copying seveal GB per day. Extra speed (esp 4x faster than the company USB thingies) was very nice for that

Though it would be nice if it lasted. Buying things again because they broke is never fun.

So wait this was all just so you could carry your music with you

Yes. And listen to it.
I said so. oo'

I used to carry music around on my phone, until I realised I never played it since it drained the battery
But I know plenty of people who do.

12:11 AM
Go buy yourself a classic style ipod and put a case on it

Some with headphones
Some with bloody distorted loud music from a phone speaker

Depends oj the music and the phone hen
on*

Aye.
I know my phone was not good at it

I own an ipod. I want my music on my phone because it's more practical. My battery is most of the time over 80 % when I get home at night.

Sadly not everybody realised that (with their phones)

12:13 AM
Also, I can't think of recharging two devices all the time. I always plug my phone in, but I put the ipod in a drawer because even when completely turned off, after a week or so the battery was empty.
And I only occasionally listen to music.

ariane
voltaic solar panels and battery packs

......

mobile power for whatever device
just don't buy the smallest battery they have as it wont charge via usb 2.0 for some reason

Sigh. NO.
Not sure if you're kidding me or if you're just the person who likes to overcomplicate things the most in the world.

Most people on here like gadgets.

12:16 AM
That's not over complicated at at all

No desire to overcomplicate, just a desire for gadgets and playing with them

Yeah, well, that's not my case at all.

You can buy things like travel bags, backpacks, etc with the gear built into them and you can't see it
just drop your device in the bag, plug the cord in and walk, sit, whatever you want, a s long as your in sunlight or it is rather, it charges itself

I understand the principle. I'm just tired to tell you the many reasons why it's silly. So just take my no, okay?

No problem, but it's far from silly

12:21 AM
Silly for me in particular then
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820171580
This is fast, cheap and has a lifetime warranty. Where is the catch?

The fine print

>_> What is the catch then?

'lifetime' = as long as the model is made, with some additional conditions
iirc

I know, but shouldn't it usually mean that the product is of better quality than one with no warranty?

No
They could start producing a new model each month

12:35 AM
http://www.wd.com/en/products/external/portable/
What is the difference between the smooth and holed case models?
Forget it, I get it. Holed = black. Coloured = not black.

the white one has 'holes' too
and practically not very much
they probably realised the old gloss cases are a scratch magnet

Heh. I honestly care very little about scratches.
My glasses have been scratched for over a year. oo'

nor do I
my external drive IS scratched as heck tho

1:14 AM
Cool.

3:19 AM
@user88311: what're you looking for now?

Bob
3:46 AM
@Ariane I just carry an extra battery for my phone now.
Light, easy to swap, and it cost $2
those portable chargers/battery packs tend to be heavier and bulkier. and less efficient.
and expensive.
@iglvzx and then there's those of us who use our address bars as Google :P
I do that now. InstantFox.

Gaming mouse for productivity?
I'm looking into getting a better mouse, a high-end gaming mouse like the one above, but I don't game much on my PC. But will I benefit from a gaming mouse working with applications like LibreOffice, Visual Studio and GIMP?
Granted, I do game occasionally on my computer and a better mouse will definitely help here, but it's not like I'm a hardcore gamer.

/me is quite fond of the logitech G300
@DragonLord: yes and no
higher DPI = mouse moves more, and being able to switch precision is nice
and all those bottons!

4:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek: Just how useful is the EasyShift[+] functionality, where a modifier button allows for a second layer of functions on the mouse buttons, in theses sorts of applications?

@DragonLord: I tend to just use a subset of buttons for stuff like scroll up and down ;p

Anyone else has anything to say about using a gaming mouse for everyday computing and coding?
@Sathya?

@DragonLord I use a G400 - if anything I love the high precision dpi
makes it easy to move across a big screen with little effort

What do you think about the Roccat Kone XTD? Is this a bit too much for this sort of use, or is it worth the $90?

I keep mine at 1800, I think

4:55 AM
Right now, I'm using a Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000, and I feel it's time to get something better. Is it worth the cost if I'm not gaming that much?

@DragonLord I wouldn't recommend a wireless mouse, tbh

@Sathya, well, this is the mouse I've been using for the past year...

@DragonLord don't get me wrong, I used a MSFT Wireless Mouse 4000 for well over 3 years
but switch to a wired one was so much better
@DragonLord and that I think for your use, It might be overkill

What I'm asking about is whether it's time to move up to something better. I'm willing to give up wireless, but I'll probably miss the BlueTrack...
I personally don't like to compromise, but I really can't spend $90 on a mouse without good reason. Perhaps the Roccat Kova[+] would fit the bill?

@DragonLord that looks reasonable

5:08 AM
But will a better mouse be a better long-term investment should I need more from my mouse, or is it not worth the $40 difference between the Kova[+] and Kone XTD?
NB: The Kova[+] uses an older 3200 DPI sensor, the Kone XTD uses an 8200 DPI sensor.

@DragonLord there isn't much(if any) you can do from XTD, that you can do [+]
beyond 2000DPI, unless you have cat-like reflexes, it makes it difficult impossible to control
so the sensor point is moot
regd/ programmable buttons, I suspect you won't be using them that much

Will I miss the BlueTrack on my Microsoft mouse, or do the high-resolution sensors on gaming mice of this sort help with tracking on unusual surfaces?
The BlueTrack seems to work pretty much everywhere... @Sathya

@DragonLord what's bluetrack?

ah this
@DragonLord I don't know, tbh - I use a Razer Goliathus surface..

5:20 AM
@Sathya Tracking performance on various surfaces comes up as a concern for me as I need to work in a variety of places, from cheap plastic tables to hardwood.
Anything to say on this, @JourneymanGeek?

@DragonLord any glass tables? That's the which trips most mice

@Sathya I almost never need to work on glass tables, fortunately :) -- I'd be looking at Logitech's Darkfield mice if this was an issue

okay.. you should be fine with the [+] then

@Sathya I still feel like spending the money on the Kone XTD, though :/
A part of me wants to not compromise, since the Kova[+] is an older-generation model...

indulge yourself then XD

5:28 AM
@Sathya Do I gain any practical advantage with the extra buttons and precision?
3200 DPI is pretty far from 8200 DPI, FWIW.

na not really
19 mins ago, by Sathya
beyond 2000DPI, unless you have cat-like reflexes, it makes it difficult impossible to control

And can I conceive a situation where I need more than seven buttons on a mouse? (The Microsoft mouse I'm using has five buttons, which I consider to be the minimum because I need the two extra buttons for Back and Forward.)
@Sathya Well, the Kone XTD does have a tilting scroll wheel, which the Kova[+] does not have. The MS mouse has a tilting scroll wheel and it does comes in handy when it's necessary, but I don't use it that often.

do you use any of those extra buttons?

@Sathya While I wish I had a few extra buttons on my mouse, at least for now, I don't think I'll need more than seven (as on the Kova[+]). Besides, the Kova[+] does have EasyShift[+] for an extra layer of functions.
I guess the practical choice is clear...
Oh, well. For $50, this is much better than the Razer DeathAdder :p
(though the latter has a higher resolution sensor)

Q: Lock file from being changed by no one except me?

IamStalkerI need to lock my password dictionary file, i want to lock file from being deleted and changed. How should i do it? In C# WinApi or any thing else?

See you later, I need to get to bed. Thanks for all the great advice, @Sathya and @JourneymanGeek.

Bob
@DragonLord I personally am happy with a mouse with two extra buttons. With a little program-specific mapping (X-Mouse Button Control), I haven't needed more.
Not sure if I can accurately hit buttons on some of those mice, either. I've had trouble with accidentally nudging those extra buttons..
As for surfaces, optical mice tend to prefer a surface with uniform colour. A sheet of plain paper actually works very well. A hard surface would help. I've had a pretty good experience with a cheapish HP wireless mouse on cloth, though.

@DragonLord yep..
@DragonLord cheers :)

@Bob, I need to go soon, but what mouse are you using?

Bob
A 6-year old Dell 5-button mouse with tilting wheel :P
The left mouse button has been dodgy for a while, but I just love this mouse.
Got used to its longer shape a while ago :\
something like this:

5:58 AM
my old logitech had one too. Didn't find out till I took it apart ;p
@DragonLord also, most mice I've used seem fine on most surfaces. Amusingly I either use the same mousepad @Sathya has, or a sanded down cutting board.
I had a duct taped over mousepad at one point

Thanks, everyone. The advice you've given is simply great, but I've got to get to bed now. Ping me if there's anything of interest regarding mice; I'll check the transcript tomorrow.

Bob
there's quite a few colourful mousepads around
those tend to make optical mice jump

Morning
There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

ohm, those horrible mice as bob posted.
We had them, I tried to used them. they hurt.
Too small for a mouse. I needed to either tape a few CM of additional width to that mouse, or I would grip them with two fingers and those two would start yo hurt within 10 minutes

Bob
8:04 AM
@Hennes I like them :(

I got big hands.

Bob
lol
I hate the short mice though
especially those mini laptop ones

Which means I also fail to used the tiny keyboards on 7 or 9" netbooks

Bob
same here :P
I may have just stumbled on the optimum way to hold this mouse

E.g. I got an Asus Eee701. And if I want to use it I carry along a full sized normal keyboard

Bob
8:05 AM
heck, even bought a replacement off ebay for when the button finally completely dies
@Hennes ever tried those foldable keyboards?
the local kmart has a couple of cheap ones :S
I'm not sure if it's worth trying

Nope.
I looked at a few of them
and at the laser keyboards

@Bob Those are gerbils, mot mice.

But they all need a stable flat platform. And I use the Eee when travelling

Bob
@Hennes Laser... keyboards? :S

Bob
8:07 AM
wut.
why would you.. how is that even a good thing?

Project a keyboard. Sense motion.

Bob
give me some tactile response please.

No tactile feedback whatsoever and you need a flat surface
But very small to carry

Bob
sigh.
if I wanted that, I'd just use the touchscreen.
that's the #1 reason I can't type fast on touchscreens.

No touchscreen on an Eee 701

Bob
8:08 AM
My fingers inevitably drift.
even a cramped physical keyboard is better...

And I usually looked when I still had a palm (with the full 1MB installed!)

Bob
ah, yes
those sites.
Sure, redirect me to the mobile site. NO, NOT THE HOME PAGE
2
I then proceed to launch Firefox with Phony and a desktop user agent, cursing the whole way.
even worse, often the mobile navigation is utterly worthless
you'd think they would be able to redirect to the correct page
heck, often it's just swapping the www for a m
they no JS good

@Hennes Your fingers will block the light!

It works......due to herbs!

Bob

Q: Delete all sentences containing English in Notepad++

user122377How can I delete all sentences containing English in Notepad++? It would also be great if I could not only delete English...

I know you're still in the pipe but that deseves voting into the pit of doom

@Iain agree with your answer

@Sathya thanks - I really don't know what it is with that guy (you'll have seen my discussion elsewhere along the same lines with him) but I wish he'd just give up on migrations

actually, I think that IF they kept it a site as a migration target, it isn't that bad an idea. SO though....

and robo reviewers will mark it as yes & everything will keep coming in. I don't see the point of this. — Sathya 12 secs ago

@Sathya: Hence my mention of SO
and that's a perfect place to put landmines those review audits

8:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek not sure how it's feasible to audit migrations..

@Sathya: well, just pick a random question and throw it into the queue?

@JourneymanGeek ok, then? How do you program to figure what's ontopic or not?

@Sathya: you don't

@Sathya put them straight into the close queue or better still just close them automagically

@Iain it boils down to the fact that you mention in the first line of your answer - beta sites' migrations are a trickle, when it's a waterfall then it's like getting blasted away

8:32 AM
You throw in questions that haven't been voted to close from the source site, into the destination site

Bob
@JourneymanGeek or you manually pick a couple of obvious ones

@Sathya Oh yeah - that's why I said it, he's only active on small sites that aren't in the SO pipe

Bob
or pick some from unrelated sites

yeah

A: Pipe migrated questions to the review queues of the destination site

Journeyman GeekI think there's a few caveats here. Firstly, this shouldn't be seen as a replacement for removing sites as migration targets where they choose to be. Where a site is a valid, and willing migration target - that is to say, they actually haven't lost faith in the source site's ability to use thei...

how bad are the migrations from SO ?
