3:19 PM
i hate traffic

Wonders if @Tanner is r.tanner.f

@HackToHell yup lol

SU should have a history option :P

That would be kind of neat actually

3:21 PM
So this is what I came home to last night:
Is that... excessive?

Candy :)

haha

@Tanner what is all that?
a tablet, a phone and candy?

That's an iPad mini and iPhone leaning on an iPad 2 because the big iPad is the only one with a standing case.
The "big iPad" is now the three year old's possession. He has claimed it, and there are no longer any adult-like things on it.
Apple users...

so you got an iPad mini and an iPhone for your birthday?

3:26 PM
The wife got an iPhone for... I forget what last year. Mini was for her birthday.
I don't touch that crap. Windows is bad enough; I'm switching to Linux remember? :P

oh ok
@Tanner of course I remember; it's stickied

that's @OliverSalzburg's userscript ;p

this seems like a great value; why doesn't Apple sell thunderbolt cables for this much?

3:31 PM
now chat is black yay !!

@OliverSalzburg lol

Anyone know any tel: "protocol" handlers for desktop? Just for testing purposes

is there a way for me to search for questions so that only questions migrated from SO are returned, and are sorted by either when they were asked originally or when they were migrated (either one is ok)?

Skype uses callto:
@allquixotic I only see migrated:yes

3:49 PM
@OliverSalzburg that's the opposite
it shows questions migrated from SU to elsewhere
i just wanted to see what crap SO has thrown at us today

@allquixotic Oh I see
@allquixotic I'm not sure if 10k users get that info...
There's actually a page for that ;P

I guess I could search migrated:yes on SO but that would be everything they've migrated to any site, which would doubtlessly contain a lot for android.SE, SF, etc
@OliverSalzburg oh, at 10k+?

@allquixotic Maybe, it's a mod tool

i have less than 1500 rep to go until I'm a 10ker

Maybe it's only available to diamonds :\

3:52 PM
that's basically about 7 work days' full of answering questions
if i hit the rep cap for 7 days i'd be there

Oliver, can you give us the link to such a page? If it does not work then you know it is diamond only

@Sathya Thanks! Here's hoping it results in something new :)

pretty much ;p

i have been doing less answering on the Q&A site and more answering here, of late

3:53 PM

@OliverSalzburg > The page you're trying to visit requires the privilege “access to moderator tools.”

Blinks. BAsic math andswer on SU. And accepted to
Thanks, this helped a lot! — ShadowHero 54 secs ago
I can open it with 15k

@Hennes 30bits - a common color depth

Aye. But the math was not that hard.

3:55 PM
One pixel once per seconds needs 1 bit/sec. 30 bit colour per second needs 30. for X by X pixels mutiply. I mean, that should have been trivial to figure out

If I have 10 reputation, get 10 downvotes (-2 x 10 = -20 rep), my reputation goes to zero?
Or to -10?

@ruda.almeida Zero One

@ruda.almeida 1

* Evil mode * Do you want to try that. ;-)

I've never seen negative rep

3:56 PM
your rep never drops below 1

I have down votes new users with 1 rep. They statyed at 1

@Hennes, that bandwidth need may be less if lossless protocol compression is used

Which confirms Sathya
Aye. Renew each pixel is worst case.
But worst case is still below max.

@Sathya Hm. But if after a bazillion downvotes I get one upvote, does my reputations goes up?

@ruda.almeida yes :)

3:57 PM
And I assume that the overhead is not all that huge for a protocol doing what it is designed to do

votes are counted sequentially, earliest to latest

whoa... I just learned about MyDP

So downvotes casted after the user has 1 reputation are ignored, and only the next upvote will be considered?

it uses the Micro USB connector for DisplayPort! O_O

woah, the new close dialog for duplicates is slick

4:02 PM
shit ripped the cord of my mouse off it :(

@HackToHell wired only mouse?

Q: Youtube's measure against Virus

NoseWhat kind of measure is Youtube taking against Virus? and I have one more question. If I watch the video, Needn't I worry about virus?

wut.

@Sathya So that's why it was broken...
5
Q: Cannot vote to close as duplicate in Chrome

GillesI'm voting to close mark "Premium SSL" vs "Stanard SSL" certificates - Any reason why I would want a "Premium SSL"? as a duplicate. It already has 4 votes to close as a duplicate of What are the advantages of EV Certificate?. But when I click “duplicate”, the wind...

@Sathya it's a valid question, but a proper explanation of an answer is basically that, barring any decoder vulnerabilities that lead to certain types of data causing a buffer overflow or remote code exploit, it's not really possible to inject a virus into a video
and if such a vulnerability DID exist, it'd basically be all over the internet and I'm sure Youtube would react within hours or minutes

@allquixotic how about posting that :-))

4:14 PM
I think the question belongs on itsecurity myself
it could be framed in a way of "how do i allow users in an enterprise environment to play videos and how do i mitigate the potential impact of decoder vulnerabilities that the data might exploit?"
the simple answer is "ASLR and DEP" which is already standard almost everywhere
I'm not feeling un-lazy enough to write up a proper answer though, I'd rather chat about it

4:29 PM
There are other possibilities for vulnerabilities, not only in the video data itself, but others such as suspicious links in comments or video descriptions, or exploits on the HTML/JS code

@Sathya I'm asking you since you're here and a mod :). Why was this question migrated?

Q: Android Developer Tools(ADT) installation gives errors. Is it working properly?

chobokI installed the Android Developer Tools (ADT) bundle, which includes the Eclipse platform, on Ubuntu 12.10, using the official instructions. When I run the program from the command line I see this message 8 times: LIBDBUSMENU-GTK-CRITICAL **: watch_submenu: assertion `GTK_IS_MENU_SHELL(menu)'...

> migrated to stackoverflow.com by Nifle, Mokubai, ChrisF, Dave M, Graham Wager 14 mins ago
@terdon you'll have to ask them

Ah, thanks, sorry. I was notified of the migration because I had posted a (very limited) answer and was directly redirected to SO when I went to check so I could not see who migrated

you can click on migrated from link to take you back to the source, btw

Thanks, that's good to know.
I'd always thought that was just a link to the main site.

4:36 PM
well, now you know better :)

4:49 PM
@allquixotic yep

5:05 PM
hi. Have any of you tried installing virtualbox to a external hard drive?

@srikanthchandrasekaran What do you mean? What will be on the external hard drive? The executable or the .vdi / .vmdk file?
Also, on what OS?

The executable

Linux? Windows? Mac?

My host machine is Windows
I will store both the executable and the virtual machines on the external hard drive

@srikanthchandrasekaran Open google and search for "running virtualbox as a portable app".

5:13 PM
@ruda.almeida Why are you flagging your own messages

You can flag yourself?

yes

5:44 PM
Was it marked as valid? lol

5:59 PM
@Tanner lmgtfy is rude, be it in comments or chat.

@ruda.almeida I managed to do it.
@ruda.almeida I am installing a RHEL virtual machine in my external hard drive.

Hello everybody

'llo

I've bought a Lenovo V580c laptop and I can't install Linux on it. I can't boot on pendrive or cd.
If I choose USB or CD in boot menu - just nothing happens (screen just refreshes, and showes the same boot screen).
I've thought it's because of compability mode. I've changed in SATA menu of BIOS.. but no results.
Only Linux Mint 14 usb flash could been booted, but not 13 for example.
I don't want to install Mint 14 ;((
I've tried different versions of bootable pendrives: ubuntu 10.10, debian 6, elementary os Luna beta 1, Mint 13, Mint 14.
Only the last booted

6:14 PM
In which case: Did you try to boot using one of the USB 2 ports (Not an USB3 port)

Yes, I've tried only USB 2
yes, it's my new laptop)
not exactly this. My one can't be extended to 8Gb (only 4Gb) - I didn't check, but so I was told in the store

@Innuendo Ubuntu 10.10 is ancient
use something that's actually still supported, like 12.04 or better yet, 12.10

I'm downloading 12.10 right now

6:29 PM
it's apparently supported officially for Ubuntu 11.10 or later ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201204-10886

But ElementaryOs Luna is based on ubuntu 12.04... and it's don't boot too

are you trying to boot in UEFI mode or BIOS mode?

I like old Gnome 2... All this commercial things that pops up everywhere in new Ubuntu... and this Unity-style... makes me seek

then install Lubuntu 12.10, or post-install you can install MATE desktop or Cinnamon

all these signs of dollars in Software Centers...
Even while downloading, they offered me to buy something on 15$... and only if you disable all buttons, you'll get Ubuntu for free.
SHAME ON YOU - ubuntu community... Very dissapointed

6:33 PM
@Innuendo you can directly download the CD image without looking at any of their website, install it, and with a few clicks completely disable anything that collects personal information and disable the Amazon search integration

@allquixotic, is there some kind of article with all tips and steps to get rid of this commercial stuff of ubuntu?
I'll google for it:)

and they don't want you to buy anything; they're asking for donations because Ubuntu is developed by a commercial organization that has to keep the lights on, and Mark Shuttleworth can't just fund it off of his fortune forever

MATE is like in Linux Mint? I didn't like it.. I need to learn all new application names to use it. pluma instead of gedit.. mate-control-center, mate-something-else, etc

@Innuendo no, Cinnamon is the default desktop of Mint
MATE is Gnome 2.0 ported to more modern base libraries (GLib, GTK, Gsettings)
but the UI is the same as GNOME 2.x
LXDE might be good for you but it's a little simpler (and faster, and more cut down) than Gnome 2.0 -- cdimages.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/12.10/release

i think it's very intrusive kind of asking for donations.
I seldom donate.. because I'm russian. We work here just for food. In my city, programmer could earn maximum 1.5k $. it's a big luck to get such sallary... usuall it's about 600-800$.
So, I donated a few times only.. 5$ for wikipedia once, and 5$ for a free 3d space simulator, cause I used on my place of job)
@allquixotic, thank you for details... I think I'll try LXDE

6:44 PM
change in name, sid aka @Ben ;)

@Sathya Yup! It's more professional, I think.
I'm listening to crappy 90s techno music while at work. :P

haha

Crappy 90 German techno, that is.
:)
I swear this is saying "it's only like the erection"...

LOL

@BenRichards I'm listening to excellent 2013s traditional pop music while at work :P
and hi Ben/Sidran! LTNS
Sidran 13.02 is a Long-Time No-See release of Sidran Linux -- only shows up every 2 years

6:56 PM
lol

(See you in 2015!)

Haha @allquixotic. I legitimately chuckled. :P

8:07 PM
Would it be cool if I hacked a usb port and audio input into my alarm clock?

@user973810 i want those on a tin of breath mints

David Fullerton on February 01, 2013

It’s 2013, almost three years after we first raised money and started growing beyond the first four employees. At the time, Jeff wrote a great blog post about working remotely, basically laying out our plan for how we were going to make it work. Now we’re a few years in and it’s time to update it with, well, what actually happened.

First, where are we now? Stack Exchange now employs 75 people, roughly evenly split between sales (and sales ops and marketing) and product (development, ops, design, community management). The product side is where our remote working happens: we have 16 full-time re …

@Blogbot such a progressive company. mine definitely does live in the stone age, and it slowly chokes off my creativity and my will to work hard

Ell
Hi guys
I think I've worked out it's either my socket or internal wiring or other socket :3

9:19 PM
argh anybody handy with windows pe?
trying to be good and follow the technet guide before screwing everything up doing it another way. how can I change drives to my flash drive in pe?
I'm stuck at 3.1 option 2
nvm I am teh dumbz =D
It's on C, herp derp

@Tanner pre-execution environment? in other words, hugely cut down and featureless windows?

9:35 PM
@allquixotic Yup. Used mostly for deployment.

helpful flags 42 - must...resist...flagging

@GrahamWager Oh, you can still flag, and we'll keep it at that number, promise.
Eventually you'll have 42 declined flags. At that point you should probably stop :)

@slhck Haha, I was actually a tiny bit gutted when I got my first declined one

I know it hurts a little, but don't worry about it.

lol, well it's stayed at 1 so far, so i'm not too worried...and I'm over the 3k mark now so most stuff that I would have spotted quickly just gets a close vote instead now :)
in fact, the 3k mark led me to find (and edit) the meta post:
65
Q: How should my flagging change when I gain the ability to vote to close?

DragonLordMy rep is going to reach 3,000 soon (2,987 at the time of this post), so I should be able to vote to close soon. How should my flagging habits change when I gain this ability? What should I do when I encounter a post that: is off topic and should be migrated to a site for which there is a mig...

and, fun fact, I was the best man at DMA57361's wedding :)

9:46 PM
@GrahamWager Yeah, good post, that one.

@slhck i get lots of declined flags but i'm still like 87% helpful
and i flag less nowadays, i just VTC crap

Well, the thing is, we can't mark as helpful and leave a message at the same time, so even if we know people were just trying to be helpful we have no way to tell them, "thanks, but no".

9:58 PM
Earlier today I got a review audit. How nice.
2

@slhck Well you never know, gotta check you mods can still be trusted somehow! ;)

@slhck What happens if you get it wrong?

@GrahamWager Yeah. Good thing is, if I delete every post I'll always pass :P

Haha, true, just like clicking "flag" is a nice reversible way to check for an audit

@Tanner Dunno, a virtual slap in the face from the community team?
@GrahamWager Really, what does it do?

10:05 PM
clicking flag on an audit immediately gives you the congrats box, if it's not an audit the flag dialog comes up instead, which u can X out of

Hello, does anyone know what is the maximum number of 2560x1600 monitor a single graphics card can support?

least they fixed this giveaway:
13
Q: Review Audit Giveaway

Graham WagerI just came across my first review audit over on SuperUser, but it was a bit of a giveaway: Clicking through to the question shows there are actually 0 answers (as being a review-audit, this post is already deleted) but as other answers obviously subtracts the current review answer, it's left ...

@GrahamWager Interesting. You seem to have experience in that?
@GrahamWager Other shenanigans with the count: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/165148/…

@slhck I just noticed that when I did get an audit, it killed it immediately upon clicking Flag before the dialog

@ShadowHero I bet @allquixotic can elaborate on that.

10:09 PM
@slhck I beat you to that one, with my comment on Geoff's answer :P

@GrahamWager True. Oh well, never hurts to report a bug twice here.

indeed :)

OK, I hope he does! Actually I asked here: superuser.com/questions/545195/… and it diden't end well
also the guy said 4 and then I find out AMD cards with Eyefinity can support 6 displays

@ShadowHero Well, your questions are all about the same issue, I guess? Like, some thing you want to achieve and just split up into multiple questions?
Often, it's easier to get a clear view on the whole concept first – maybe here on chat.

You are 100% correct.
I am thinking of buying 3 2560x1440 monitors
but I can't deside on the graphics card

10:13 PM
There, that's a valid chat question :)

also, i need to be able to switch to OSX and Windows easily using all 3 monitors
and finally i am thinking if i even need more than 3 of those monitors
Quite messy, isn't it...?

You're asking the wrong person here, I have no idea about hardware :P

ok ok :P

When a few missing letters make a big difference. ^^

10:29 PM
hmmm...what are we officially calling "The Interface Previously Known As Metro" these days?
I got bored of trying to keep up

@slhck it depends on the gpu and how new it is

@allquixotic You mean @ShadowHero :)

newer gpu = bigger framebuffer and can support more displays; bigger gpu = ditto... small or old = bad.
yes sorry soulhack

(or shashlik, as some might say)

Anyone else here in the YouToube HTML5 trial?

10:34 PM
@ShadowHero do you have money ? get Radeon HD7970

@OliverSalzburg Tried it a year go, didn't like it.

@OliverSalzburg yeah, but most videos i get are still flash

@slhck I'm trying it for the second time currently and there are so many problems :\ Even though I'm using Chrome
@allquixotic Which browser do you use?

@OliverSalzburg chrome stable on windows and desktop linux

Well, I have money but they are precious to me :P
To be clear: NO gaming. I never ever game. I don't want to waste my money buying something i will never use
I want the card to be as silent as possible.
I am a programmer btw

10:38 PM
@OliverSalzburg Wait. According to YouTube I am in the HTML5 trial. Didn't even notice it.
So either it's working great or not working at all.

@slhck Well, I definitely notice the missing Fullscreen button everywhere :P
So annoying. First I have to "Pop out", then I can fullscreen that window
And annotations just won't close!
But if you guys don't have that...

@allquixotic What about W600 card? Can this card support 6 2560x1600 monitors? Also, can it really support 6 4K monitors?

@OliverSalzburg Then I guess fullscreen for HTML5 video works natively on OS X.
Oh, yeah it does. No Flash for me. And I was wondering whether my Mac suddenly decided to like Flash.
(Because it was not at 95% CPU while playing 420p video)

Another interesting part about this is, I get the HTML5 player on the embedded video, but when I click on "Watch on YouTube", the YouTube page will be using Flash.

Heh.
