Q: How can I copy nytimes.com images to the clipboard?

glenviewjeffSlideshows on the New York Times website seem to have used some trickery to cause a right-click in Firefox (and IE/Chrome) then "view image" or "copy image" to return a 1 x 1 pixel. The images also won't print. How can I bypass this short of a screen capture? Bonus points for describing how th...

@HackToHell I want to see the face on the web developer (or the one who came up with that idea) when he figures out there's this question about it.
Gonna go to bed, or I'd miss tomorrow my birthday...

A: Unable to install Android for Windows 7 because JDK is not found

HawkRTFM!! It tells you what to do in that screen! You have to create a new JAVA_HOME environment variable. START->control panel->system security->system->advanced system properties->environment variables->New SYSTEM variable JAVA_HOME C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_07 Save. Restart the install...

RTFM! doesn't make for a good answer. You should RTFQ where the user clearly mentions " created a NEW system variable called JAVA_HOME".. Also, your path for JDK won't be the same for all. Think first before you post RTFM!!!! — Sathya 26 secs ago

user652641Using the information from mehaase, I wrote a Python script that really simplifies this process on the Mac. @avirk I get my bonus at the end of the year

Oh i get a christmas bonus too, sometimes :P

I'd prefer a raise over a bonus any day though :D

Already had a 6% one of those at the end of our financial year :D

Get both pay rise and bonus.
????
Profit.

yeah, but it was my first year so can't imagine it'll be 6% every year
think the average is probably 3%

@Oliver then you get the big bonus ;-)

12:52 PM
Can someone download AHK site for me and send me in zip. I can't access net on my lapi :-(

@avirk The whole site?

@Oliver yup.

@avirk I don't think I have the required access rights :D

@jokerdino yup.

No, I am not gonna download the whole thing.

@Oliver can we not skip the forum part?

@avirk So you don't want the whole site after all?

@OliverSalzburg he doesn't want to skip it

@OliverSalzburg yes, it's been that way for quite some time.

@jokerdino I wouldn't notice, mine is on X-Mas :D

@OliverSalzburg Owie. :(
I think you get both :P

Well, congrats @TomWijsman ;D

2:09 PM
@OliverSalzburg Hmm, wonder what takes precedence.
@OliverSalzburg Yeah, although I believe it to be for anyone's birthday.

@TomWijsman I would check, but I'll have forgotten about it tomorrow :D

Happy Birthday Tom!

Every day I'm googl'ing.
Seems it points to G+ profile.

Anyone know how accurate nmap is at determining what kind of equipment it's seeing? I'm not hacking anything.... Sadly we own this stuff and just don't know :(

@r.tanner.f: probably accurate enough

2:13 PM
@r.tanner.f Usually pretty accurate, otherwise it tells you
It'll say "not enough data received for proper OS detection, here's my best guess"
Or something along those lines ;D

@OliverSalzburg Yeah that's the territory I'm in. It's giving me around 97% accuracy though so shrug If that is a cable modem though I really don't know wtf is going on down there o_O

@r.tanner.f For me, it's usually "surprisingly accurate" :)
I guess that best describes it :D

good description xD lol

I had some really weird devices it didn't know at all where I submitted the fingerprint to the database
Would be interesting to know if those are included now

Hmm, how do you submit a device? I've got one that I know for a fact it identified wrong. Our network scanner would make for a pretty awful firewall.

2:17 PM
@r.tanner.f If it has no clue, it will show you the fingerprint and the URL where to submit

@r.tanner.f Lolol 'hidden' functionality?

Wow... 85mph
That came up before :D

@allquixotic Can't you also drink and drive in Texas? Part of me is terribly, terribly tempted to take a trip down there just so I can blast by at 85mph with a 24oz can of crap beer while waving to cops.

all I can say is, I'll be glad when the Texas Rangers have about 5 fans in the stadium (the rest will be dead from highway fatalities)

@allquixotic You can easily do 90 mph on most UK motorways without getting in trouble, don't quote me on that though :P

The German autobahns form the nationally coordinated motorway system in Germany. In German, they are officially called (plural , abbreviated 'BAB'), which translates to "federal expressways". German autobahns have no general speed limit, but the advisory speed limit (') is . Germany's autobahn network has a total length of about in 2012, which ranks as the fourth longest highway system in the world behind the National Trunk Highway System (NTHS) of China, the Interstate Highway System of the United States, and the autopistas and autovías of Spain. Name These motorways are officiall...
German autobahns have no general speed limit, but the advisory speed limit is 130 kilometres per hour (81 mph).

2:24 PM
@tombull89 Yeah yeah we know the states are weaksauce drivers :P

let's take a population with a lowest-common-denominator driving test; highly underqualified vehicles (1970s pickup trucks with 10 year old bald tires); and build a road "designed" to allow safe operation of 85 mph using American engineers who have likely never, in their entire lives, ever constructed a road designed for that high speed. Sounds legit.
Sounds like a great Albert Bartlett-style population control mechanism, in fact. I'm hugely in favor of it. RE: Bartlett "Anyone advocating war? Highway fatalities? Famine?" -- Yes, I'll advocate highway fatalities. Let the people suicidal enough to do that, go ahead and do it. We won't miss 'em.

lol very true

First aid training is mandatory in order to obtain a driving licence in Germany. well, did not know that.

that's awesome. you can build a road with no speed limit and an average actual speed of 500 mph if you want; any engineering feat is possible. I don't call airplanes doing 350mph suicidal. I don't call the space shuttle doing ungodly mph suicidal. You compensate for high speed risks by employing upfront safety controls built into the vehicle, into the training of the operators, and into the medium on which the vehicle travels (as applicable).
what's downright stupid is just increasing one variable (speed) without doing anything at all to control for the risk. no extra training; no first aid training; no vehicle maintenance regulations.
you want to train drivers the equivalent amount that you train airline pilots, and THEN open up a road at that speed? sure. do it. it'll be safe.
Actual risk = base risk of the speed as determined by physics - controlling or mitigating factors. They're upping the base risk and not upping the controlling/mitigating factors, hence leading to a higher actual risk. Consider walking vs. the space program: walking goes about 2 mph and requires no controlling/mitigating factors, because if you "crash" (bump into someone), the chance of it being fatal is very low (unless you are near an environmental hazard like a live electric wire or cliff)
with the space program: the base risk is tremendous, and if we treated going into manned spaceflight like we did driving in the US, almost every astronaut to go into space so far would have died prior to returning to earth. but we have enormous effort into mitigating controls.

text. text. more text. text.

@jokerdino that's like saying "the essence of a chatroom. the essence of a chatroom. more essence of a chatroom. the essence of a chatroom."
and thanks for contributing btw :)

Let me read the whole convo :)
Was listening to rock and roll. :~

you missed a table flip.

I'll start from there ;)

@allquixotic: in many places in the US, the speed limit wasn't fixed
It was 'reasonable' speed

2:42 PM
Alright. They should have speed bumps like they do in India ;)

Well, that Black Mesa Source release was a bit anti-climactic

Q: Jquery, toggle between two images

r1nzlerI'm trying to use someone's code from a earlier post that I posted on here, and in it, he provided a link to jsfiddle that shows how to toggle between two images: http://jsfiddle.net/D9VvV/ I'm trying to replicate exactly what that person is doing, but it doesn't seem to work on my code: html:...

@Tom janm din mubarak ho (happy bdqy dude)

Q: Where should I put my application cache for Unix based apps?

DolphinI am building command line application, and I have a need to save some temp data to files. I do not know where is convention for applications to store their cache on unix based systems (in this case Ubuntu 12.0.4)?

hey guys what is new in I-phone 5

@avirk thinner, taller and costlier

how much it cost?

@avirk They converted Siri over into an open telephone line to a woman in a datacenter in a third-world country, to improve her realism... so when you ask her for something she never misunderstands... unless she doesn't speak English
they just sit there silently waiting for you to ask a question and then they google for you when you ask it
they gave up on the AI, too annoying

xD

you also get a free bottle of iWater (a $50 value) with every new iPhone 5

hmmmm can I get from 4801 rep to 5000 rep in a single day with already 45 rep given on the day?
i'll need 199 rep and i've already used 45, so i have a max of 155 rep i can get without getting a lot of extra accepted answers (or getting all my upvotes first and then getting my accepted answers once maxed)

accepted answer is immune to the cap

i know

the cap is only for upvotes

but if you get accept, accept, accept, accept, accept, ... until your cap is full, and THEN get upvotes, you get hosed out of rep

no, it doesn't work that way

3:11 PM
but if you get upvote, upvote, upvote, upvote, upvote, ... until your cap is full, and THEN get accepts, you get the rep
no?

no. they changed it

oh nice

@allquixotic The rep you get from an accept (or a bounty) is completely excluded from the limit

cool... good to know... so the rep limit for the day is literally only for upvotes
what about edits?

Q: Importing about 61M contacts into outlook

TejasI have a CSV file containing about 60 Millions email IDs. I want them in my Outlook. But when I try to import them, Outlook crashes every time. So is there any trick/shortcut by which I can get them in my Outlook? Please help ASAP.

lolololololol

that just means i'll have to work hard to get a lot of accepts (and bounties, but I get them very rarely) so I'll do that ;p

you don't need to get it today.. and 5k gives you no special priv.

@allquixotic The key there is quick answers, watch the new question stream like mad and give timely answers.

yeah, i know, i work on quick answers a lot :P but i try to provide good quick answers to questions with 0 answers

aka, you don't want to spent time on questions where there's no guarantee the asker might not come around and other people have already answered / won't answer after you.

3:15 PM
i try to catch people while they are still surfing SU and waiting for someone to answer, like, within the first half an hour after they post
but sometimes i'll revisit an old question that hasn't been answered if i think i can answer it and do it service
not for a 1-rep guy though

s/30/10/ minutes
@allquixotic: I find it a bit sad that on SO people solely give the solution and don't explain how they come to it.

my goal is usually not to be the "first answer", and I find that I often get an accepted answer even if someone else answered first, because someone is trying to get easy points but my answer turns out being more useful to the OP
shrug there's a certain element of timing, but if you can provide a stronger answer in slightly more time, it's a good bet that you'll still get upvotes/accept

Hope you're enjoying that question. I sure am.

the 61M contacts? I love it

I'm laughing so hard xD
"I know programming"

3:24 PM
the guy thinks clientside outlook can do that. it's going to be hilarious just watching him try various ways of asking us how it can be done
this should be the SU question where we go berzerk a la parsing html with regex on SO
cthulhu and non-scalable .pst files and all

aww it got closed
the sad thing is it was a real question

@allquixotic That user was actually on SU in 2010
10k only

Hey, who locked that question?
@OliverSalzburg: Honestly...

I didn't lock it, I just closed it.

Outlook is meant for *just* clients; so, what you aim to do is impossible.

So, what does Microsoft have in store for business people? Exactly, Exchange.

You can add a mailing list on Exchange to be able to do this, perhaps split into multiple. Then just add those mailing lists to your Outlook field and let the server do the work of splitting it up in multiple mails. And yeah, expect your server to be under huge stress when you click send...
That's what I was typing up, but well. More kind of SF material...

3:29 PM
@OliverSalzburg Way to ruin all our fun. Buzzkill.

@MichaelHampton It was flagged :P

Pretty sure that should read "closed as just too stupid by Oliver Salzburg♦ 3 mins ago"

Isn't "too stupid" what NARQ really means?

My personal opinion is that he's, most likely, just not waiting long enough for them all to be imported.

Oh wait, it got migrated from SF. o_O

3:33 PM
He should give it some time :D

I was hoping we could use that "too stupid" question to have some real fun on SU like they did on SO, but I guess everything's so strict and homogenized now that we shut the door before fun is allowed

There we go, responded there in a comment.
@OliverSalzburg Just needs some console output.

Jeff Atwood on January 04, 2010

I noticed that the Stack Overflow question Strangest language feature has been closed and reopened several times now. The text of the question is brief:

What is in your opinion the most surprising, weird, strange or really “WTF” language feature you have encountered?

I agree this is not exactly an ideal question for Stack Overflow, per the FAQ:

Avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion. This is not a discussion board, this is a place for questions that can be answered! …

"I am a programmer" --> "stop thinking and start prototyping!"
@OliverSalzburg "Travel.SE" --> "Is it acceptable to puke rainbow and glitters in a yellow toilet room, dressed as a clown?"

Rob
woohoo! Yearling on SU

3:38 PM
He wasn't anywhere near a server, or as far as we could tell, even an office, so it got migrated from SF. In retrospect it probably should have been migrated to /dev/null.

@MichaelHampton We had too much fun with it just to throw it away =D

"Importing contacts to Outlook" seemed like a SU question. But I didn't vote on that particular one. I just made the 13-rated comment and watched the fun.

should we migrate it again to SO to let them have a poke at it and a laugh?
maybe get the original regex/html guy to write up a community wiki with those crazy unicode characters

He did say he knows teh codez. Might be fair game for SO. :P

I didn't think you could migrate a question twice.

3:42 PM
@r.tanner.f Exactly! We can tell him that we're transferring him to StackOverflow to get "teh coderz" to tell him how to write a program to import 61M contacts into Outlook, because clearly this is crashing the UI so we need a low level solution involving VB6 and a GUI interface (CSI-style)
we can also say "Please hold" to indicate that we are actively in the process of transferring him for his own benefit

lmao he'd probably swallow the whole thing xD
Oh god I'd forgotten about that line in CSI

"3.Does this question teach me anything that could make me better at my job? Can I learn something from it?" from the SO blog ---> Yes, a sysadmin or IT support guy reading that question could learn that Outlook crashes when trying to import millions of contacts
"2.Is this question accepted by the community, as reflected in upvotes, views, favorites, and answers?" ---> Yes, plenty of comment and question upvotes, although the question itself is pretty heavily downvoted

Oh god, PHP just got even worse in my eyes...

A: Strangest language feature

Newbiein PHP the strings letters cannot be used like in C, you need to use ord() and chr() in order to convert from number to char and vica versa: "a" != 97, but ord("a") == 97. Although, there is one exception: for ($i = 'a'; $i < 'z'; $i++) { print "$i "; } will print letters a to y. just ...

Ohh Shit! Now I realised that it's 6M not 60M. I swear I'm not lying. It's just a a big mistake of mine. Can anybody please help now? — Tejas 1 min ago

@allquixotic Can't we just spec and sell him an Exchange box powerful enough to do it? ;)

What's a "lacs", by the way? Does anyone know a language where a "lacs" is a number?
is that "a million" in, like, Hindi?

Also, I had to do some funky stuff to get that link to that answer... I had to click the revision history, and then get the link from "Go back to the answer". The answer doesn't have a direct link on the actual page of the question.

@allquixotic guessing so

Is that because it's closed?

3:48 PM
@allquixotic a hundred thousand (cc @HaydnWVN). Not Hindi

@Sathya in which language?

100k is very different to 60m lol

Spam. In every single darn way.

A lakh ( or ; also lac; abbreviated L; , , , , , ) is a unit in the South Asian numbering system equal to one hundred thousand (100,000; 105), written as 100,000. It is widely used both in official and other contexts in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and is often used in Indian English. Usage In English the word is used both as an attributive and non-attributive noun, and with either a marked ("-s") or unmarked plural: "1 lakh people" or "1 lakh of people", "200 lakh rupees, "5 lakh of rupees", "rupees 10 lakhs", "5 lakhs of rupees" are all to be found. I know programming. So I'm ready to do twicking by programming or even manually. — Tejas 40 mins ago
what's a "twicking"
cheers @allquixotic @HaydnWVN

i'm assuming he means tweaking

tweaking, I think

as he knowz teh codez

Step 1: someone in Russia or Brazil or Estonia runs a dedicated server or VPS (probably a 48 hour trial or other "free" server with no intention of paying; also, Amazon free tier micro server) and harvests email addresses from mailing lists, etc. Step 2: he contracts someone from India to import the addresses into Outlook so he can bulk spam them. Step 3: SU mocks them both.

3:51 PM
lmao

@allquixotic We're missing a crucial Step 3:
PROFIT
hence my mentioning we spec and sell him a server ;)

@TomWijsman rejected migrations lock the question, not sure why.

Fun story: When I was in college, my roommate (who was also a CS student) was contacted for his resume by a company that wanted him to do UI development for malware. The skillset they asked for was the ability to mimic the UIs of popular software.
Sometimes they're so brazen.

I would have "accepted" the job, got inside, got some trust, access to systems, etc. and then done a metasploit, obtain root, and shred/nuke their data stores, including source code of the malware and email addresses, etc

@allquixotic seconded

3:54 PM
doubtful that they are smart enough to keep an offline backup

@allquixotic Haha, nice. :P He shared the email with me, and we both had a good laugh and then sigh about it. :P
