7:21 AM
morning all

morning @DMA57361

7:35 AM
Hi everybody!

Morning.
anybody played with Google yet today?

@tombull89 nooo... there's another of their whatchamacallits I assume?

@DMA57361 yeah, guitar strings. You click a button and then mash on the keyboard to play the guitar...
The students are going to have fun with this today.

@tombull89 I was just about to ask wth the button did...

@tombull89 huh, running your mouse over the strings looks like it might do something too - but I have no sound at work, so the effect is somewhat lacking...

7:39 AM
okay, the button does nothing
Oh, no, it enabled keyboard input

@Wil No. I've even tried turning of encryption.

Googles engineers need to get out more...

Wil
@ChrisF What one did you go for in the end? I'm not sure how much help I will be remotely on this as everyone is so different, may be worth just giving it a reset and trying from scratch

8:03 AM
@Wil Got a TP-Link one. Seemed to be the best value ;) Can't remember the exact number (at work). The router is a US Robotics one. Part of me thinks that it's an incompatibility between the two - but for the fact that I can ping either way. This shows there is a connection. It's like it's a DNS issue or something. Might well have to reset and try again.

Wil
@ChrisF I can believe compatibility if trying to use something like wps/whatever (as much as it is a standard, things tend to vary), but, for bog standard connections such as this, there shouldn't be a problem

@ChrisF Is this still your bridging fun?

Wil
when you are in front of it, come back on here and I will try to help.... may not be back until much later - busy day today

The TP-Link documentation does mention WPS - an avenue to check out.
@Linker3000 Oh yes - I always have "fun" with computer/network upgrades. I don't do them often enough to be familiar with all the problems that can occur so get a bit stuck when they do. It also doesn't help having the "assistance" of a keen 16 year old who rushes into things.
@Wil Thanks for the offer. I'll see if I can get some time on it tonight.

Wil
@ChrisF ... I have to take my nan to the hospital and not sure how long it will take or when I will be back... hopefully there will be wifi, but no idea.... so don't count on tonight, but just @ me, and if I am around, happy to help

8:10 AM
@Wil In that case - I won't bother you.

Wil
@ChrisF ... no no... if I am around, happy to help! .... just can't say if I will be here or not

@ChrisF is the problem going between wired/wireless computers or is there something else I'm missing?

@Mokubai It's going between two wireless devices.
I've got an ADSL Wireless router (that works fine). I need to have several wired devices on the network in a location where I can't (easily) get a wire to. So I bought a wireless bridge.

@ChrisF a bit like the computer -> cable modem path in gersbo.dk/wp-content/uploads/2006/01/wireless_bridge.png ?

@ChrisF do the devices get their IP from the router or the bridge? Are they getting the right gateway?

8:30 AM
ooh

@ChrisF I've managed to get a dd-wrt router to work in wireless bridge mode before, if I remember rightly I had to manually give the bridge device an IP address in the same range/subnet as the router, then tell it the SSID/encryption type/password

@Sathya oh nice! when'd that change? :)

just posted by @Jin over at the Tavern

f/e, I like :)

yep!

8:38 AM
@Mokubai Done all that ;) (or at least I think I have)
@tombull89 They should get their IPs from the router. The documentation says turn off DCHP on the bridge (which I have done anyway).
@Mokubai Something like that yes

For me the key thing seemed to be that it refused to do anything without me specifically giving it an IP address, though I did play with some other settings which may have made it work, sadly I've not got access to the thing now...

hello

@ChrisF Ah, some routers have a setting that needs to be enabled "Access Point" or something to tell them that another wireless router or similar is going to be trying to connect.
@Alex Hello

@Alex hi

@Mokubai That's mentioned on the TP-Link documentation. I'll have to check to see whether the US Robotics device has that option. I'll also need to see if there's a firmware update for it too.

8:48 AM
If I remember rightly that was one of the problems I had before I flashed dd-wrt on to the device I ended up using as the wireless bridge, it didn't support being used as an access point and so I couldn't connect a wireless bridge to it.

Thanks guys - you've given me some things to check. My fall back position is to buy a TP-Link ASDL wireless router - but that is the last resort.

Fortuitously I then changed ISPs who gave me a router specific to them that did allow it to be used as an AP, and dd-wrt worked as a wireless bridge

>.< dang you people, just writing an answer and about to click post when that bar pops up with new answers and there's 3 of you!
Question ninjas, that's what you are!

lol

grumble grumble
I'm just going to ignore that "new answers" banner, it's not as if anyone else pays it any attention.

@Mokubai indeed, but several duplicate answers isn't necessarily bad - allows everyone to pick the best :)

Q: How to increase disk space in Wubi (Ubuntu via windows)?

MaleeshI installed Ubuntu via Windows 7. I allocated only 8 GB space to it, but unfortunately now I want more space without reinstalling or creating another partition. Is there any way to increase the disk space in the Ubuntu? Please help me to figure it out ?

@Mokubai yeah, too many answers added by new users that get deleted == auto-protection

9:45 AM
Ahhh, take it there was a few "thanks, that worked!" type answers

yup

new computer is set up ;)

@JourneymanGeek this the laptop that's taken so long to arrive?

i couldn't log into SU when ABP was active tho.
yes
i'm typing on it now
x220....

Can I flag an accepted answer as "not an answer"?

9:55 AM
I need to work out if this is a ips or tft screen. also. its a 250 gb hard drive, not a 160 gb SSD

A: Touchpad stops working when plugging in new laptop PSU

drahcirSorry, Issue was solved long ago.

@Mokubai yes

Helpful. Really helpful.

facepalm... lovely

I won't on that one, but I find those kind of "oh I fixed it but can't be bothered to say how" irritating
Or should I?

9:57 AM
well, give them a chance to update/reply to your comment
but otherwise I see no reason we should keep it

@DMA57361 fair enough, the sensible approach :)

it's better to have the question left as it was (or closed) than "accepted" with that kind of unhelpful fluff, imo

We're here to provide good and useful content. The internet has enough content-free sites out there.

indeed it does :(

hm
quick and silly question
how do i change my hostname in win7?

10:02 AM
@JourneymanGeek can't remember off the top of my head... and I'm stuck on XP w/o admin rights at work...

right click My Computer -> Properties, then half way down the page will be your compy name with "Change Settings" beside it
That'll open up the original computer properties control panel where you can actually change it.

oh crap
4 gb ram. 32 bit system

<Nelson> Ha Ha! </nelson>

@JourneymanGeek Don't worry, all our desktops and laptop (~300 and ~500) have 4GB RAM and 32-bit OS.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

10:07 AM
>_<

i DO have restore disks tho

4GB of RAM is reasonably okay, so long as you never intend to upgrade it...

all 32 bit
@Mokubai: i can't use all of it ;p

You should be able to use most of it though... though your supplier needs a good beating for giving anyone 32-bit in this day and age...

lol
yeah
i doubt i'll run out of ram
or that i'll hugely miss that 800 mb

10:11 AM
You could always pay for Superspeed Ramdisk which claims it could make use of that RAM...
(sadly all the other ramdisks I've seen can only use excess RAM above 4GB)

also, this version of the x220... isn't in the tabook

Or call Lenovo and ask where your 64-bit disks are

hm, its a bit more complex
i got it from a reseller
who my dad's friend works for
i don't think its a huge issue at the moment, honestly
its just... odd
i'm going to take a poke at the recovery console

Aye, I wouldn't consider it a big worry either, just odd as you say

...
is there any reason someone would use a USB 3.0 port unless there's USB 3.0?

10:26 AM
Not sure what you mean there
I'd use a USB3 port if I couldn't be bothered to figure out which ports were USB3 and which were USB2

as far as i know, only the core i7 models of the x220 have a USB 3.0 port
there's a very odd looking USB port on one side which i think is usb 3.0

I know that some lappys have USB2+POWER ports
which is different from USB3 (I believe)

@JourneymanGeek is it one of these? superuser.com/questions/183543/…

oh well then :P that's the only type of "odd" USB port I know about ;)

10:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek 3rd connector from the left is "powered USB" : notebookcheck.net/typo3temp/pics/0d720bf554.jpg

its yellow. two sets of pins - shallower set of top pins in addition to the usual proper ones

Hey, even got a wiki page
:This article is about the proprietary variant USB standard. Self-powered conventional USB devices may also colloquially be referred to as "powered USB"; cf. e.g. self-powered USB hubs. Powered USB, also known as Retail USB, USB Plus Power, and USB + Power, is an addition to the Universal Serial Bus standard that allows for higher-power devices to obtain power through their USB host instead of requiring an independent power supply or external AC adapter. It is mostly used in point-of-sale equipment, such as receipt printers and barcode readers. Powered USB, as a proprietary variant of USB...
@JourneymanGeek Pics or it didn't happen
I've seen that port on a lappy before

its definately USb3
which... none of the normal models of this spec have

Does it actually work? Check device manager, I'd assume something like USB3 controller would appear somewhere in there
Sorry, your lappy, you play with it...

10:47 AM
lol
i'm not actually sure where to look

I cannot connect Windows 7 with Windows XP Home
Tried everything, spend hour on research.
*spent
My XP is service pack 2.

connect, how?

o0
why is it SP2?

I am trying to allow file and printer sharing between two.

2:44 PM
Are you able to browse the windows 7 machine from XP or the other way around?
At all...

are they on the same workgroup?
also, have you tried connecting using the ip address?

Cannot browse from neither
WORKGROUP are called both machines
How do i connect using IP?

for file sharing, try //ipaddress/sharename

@JourneymanGeek other way around no?

er... \\ ?
maybe. i always get them confused ><
it might be \\ipaddress/sharename

2:53 PM
\\ip-address\sharename @JourneymanGeek

3:05 PM
How do i find "share" folder on my Windows 7?
Okay i have found it. The problem is that it is slow browsing.

Wil

Remember to enable the guest account and the file sharing service... or run the network wizard and it enables all the basic stuff for you

Like most sites, it’s hard to figure out the number of users on Stack Exchange. The widest possible number is the number of unique visitors, most of whom just read our content and move on. That number is now around 19,000,000 according to Google Analytics or 14,000,000 according to Quantcast – the difference comes from the fact that Quantcast has some “de-dupe” technology to try to estimate the number of human beings while Google Analytics just counts unique cookies.

Another number we track internally is “number of human beings who type on one of the Stack Exchange …

well, lucky bugger

heh, indeed

@Wil Where do i enable them?

@danielbeck You got to that question a few seconds before me. I almost had roughly the same answer ready to submit. :D Good job on your answer and the screenshots!
