Hey, my MacBook's Windows 7 partition seems to be playing tricks on me. I can't remember the password. Ophcrack won't run. Ideas?
@williamHilsum poke. :-)

@Moshe Hi - you just caught me... just got back from walking the dogs!
Ehh... Ophcrack is a bit drastic... I have a much better method...
do you use EFS/bitlocker e.t.c.?

No.

That's good... and, can you access the partition from OSX?

I think so. Hang on.
@WilliamHilsum Yes, I can.

@Moshe Ok... Type for the "hack" ... Well, my method of doing it!

12:32 AM
@WilliamHilsum ::ventures to guess:: Resetting registry files manually?

sorry... long to type... be patient!

ok, no worries
Skype?

Go to c:\windows\system32.exe and take a copy of osk.exe / rename it to osk_copy.exe ...

Then take a copy of cmd.exe and call it osk.exe ...

next, boot in to Windows and either type Windows key + u, or click the accessibility/wheelchair icon.

click on screen keyboard... and... it will launch a command prompt as SYSTEM!

next, two choices... the techie way - type "net user <username> <password>" which will do what it says... without confirmation, it will redo the password...

or the GUI/beginner way, type mmc, enter... add the user/pass or computer management snap in, and right click the
there we go! :)
then... delete osk.exe and rename the copy back to original!

hah, wait, what is osk.exe?
Really clever, btw. Let's see how this goes... ::reboots and loads browser on phone::

It is the accessibility on screen keyboard... there is no MD5/similar/secure check of it... so, replacing it with cmd.exe from the login screen spawns a command prompt window running as system

12:38 AM
So this can theoretically be done to any machine via a boot CD with commands?

The only time this won't work is if you have bitlocker/truecrypt, which will make the drive inaccessible (well, bitlocker yes... truecrypt, only if using full drive encryption), and, if you have EFS, you will loose your keys as they are connected to the password
@Moshe yes! When I first discovered how to get around NTFS permissions back in Windows 3.51 (was it?) many many years ago, I thought I had found the biggest hack.... then, when I grew up/learnt a lot more, you realise... NTFS/Windows permissions are only there to stop local attacks - you own the box/physical control, you can do anything

Can't rename on Mac as it's NTFS and Mac can't write to it...
3.11
Can Ubuntu do the trick?
Heck, I can use a Windows boot CD

Remember that Microsoft have got EFS, Bitlocker, PKI smartcards etc. which as far as I know are unbreakable...
@Moshe no, windows server 3.51 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT_3.5

@WilliamHilsum Right, true
Oh, WinServer.
I bet 99% of home/school machines aren't encrypted.

3.1 never had NTFS

12:41 AM
Right
I can do the rename from Ubuntu probably, no?
or a Win7 boot CD

@Moshe correct, but, schools/businesses usually don't have files on computers, they are on servers and sync...

Depends on the school. Universities use servers, local schools often not. ;-)

sorry... right... ubuntu - yes... if you have VM, you may able to use that... and certainly, a Windows PE disk will

PE?

@Moshe Fair point
Windows PE (preinstallation environment) - The name of the environment that setup runs under. If you have a setup disk, use it, press shift f10 after the first screen and it will load a command prompt window

12:43 AM
ok, hang on
Trying to set up alternate browser to chat on
! remembers iPad
Ok. Logged in here.
Does the bit length (64 bit or 32 bit) of the PE matter?
Using the 64 bit windows installer

@Moshe Makes no difference... as long as you have a 64 bit machine if using the 64 bit disk!

I know I clicked on the install disk - jumped into the actual window install... Trying again.

@Moshe Huh?
It is fine, so long as you don't actually go bast the custom/upgrade screen (then starts to get dangerous!)

Oh, interesting. When I put the cd in, EFI showed the Lion install, the windows install, the lion recovery and then TWO DVD options. One was to boot to windows apparently and the EFI boot.
I held down the option key, to show the Mac boot selection screen. I was shown an extra option, that's all.

ohh... I haven't seen the EFI windows boot, but I know the disk has it

12:53 AM
What does it do? I've never seen it before, and I have installed windows on EFI before, hence the problem now. :-)

I have UFI on my machine... but, never seen the separate EFI install... I just know it exists

Windows is loading files. Still. Hang on please.
Is this wait normal? I should try the 32 bit disk, methinks.
Let's see...

@Moshe honestly, shouldn't make a difference, but, I am not sure what you are seeing
is it the black bar at the bottom?

Yea. Trying a different boot option.
Ok. At the first install screen.

is it this one? google.co.uk/…

1:04 AM
Won't load.

Setup or the picture?

Picture.

Ok .... explain the screen you are on?
it is 3 boxes - language, location, and keyboard?

Yep

ok, click next here
then press shift + f10

1:05 AM
Then repair?
Oh, got it.
Next?

no... sorry...
just next at the screen with the 3 boxes
then shift f10, nothing else
this will launch command prompt

Right, then what?
Next as in, what's next?

sorry, Its 2AM, so tired! get easily confused :P

My prompt shows X:\Sources>
No worries.
:-)

right... ehh, no idea how many partitions you have, e.t.c. so, going to try a few things
first type c:
then dir ... Does this look like your hard drive?
if not, try d:, then try again until you see your hard drive

1:07 AM
Seems to have worked

usually in Windows PE a local/real hard drive is either d or e, but can be c

Yea, my drive. I suppose the Mac partitioin could have mangled things, except its not NTFS.

ok, so this is your hard drive? (just need to make 100% sure as some CD/expanded Windows PE environments have program files and windows directory e.t.c.)
ok... if this is your Windows drive, do this, in this order:
argh, keep pressing enter too early
cd\windows\system32
ren osk.exe osk_old.exe
copy cmd.exe osk.exe

and done, reboot...
if you did any of the steps I wrote before, let me know
I pressed enter too quick... sorry

Hang on. Sec.
Syntax of copy is off.

write it exactly as I said, should work
what is the message?

1:13 AM
The syntax of the command is incorrect.
Added quotes.
Ah, also mistook a comma for a full stop.
Ok, reboot time.
And... Hahahaha
Nice work. It shows a command prompt window.

Ah, the classic sticky key trick?

Sorry, fell asleep at keyboard... not doing to well with sleep recently! too much work :(
@surfasb overwriting osk.exe to get a command prompt and reset a password! :)

All done. It worked!
Thanks. Really clever.
Never would have thought of that.

@Moshe now... just remember to delete osk.exe and rename osk_copy.exe back to osk.exe
otherwise you have a quick backdoor for anyone to use! :)

Oh, right. And to turn it off.

1:23 AM
Ahh, osk isn't the sticky key trick. But close enough.

@surfasb Just googled, yeah... same thing, I just prefer osk.exe! I guessed you could do it with others, but, never tried... and thought I was original with this method :(

Not letting me rename osk...
Need permission from TrustedInstaller. I can just modify permissions I guess. Right?

@WilliamHilsum Well, now you know two methods.
Aye

What is the sticky key method?

@Moshe easiest method will probably be to go back to login screen, go to c:\windows\system32 and type "start cmd.exe" to launch a new process of command prompt, then, close the original one (Which is running as osk.exe), then delete osk.exe and then type "ren osk_old.exe osk.exe"
@surfasb lol
@Moshe from google, it is the same as I just did with you, but targets another application

1:29 AM
@Moshe Basically, instead of using osk.exe, you use sethc.exe

Got it. Googled me to a mcaffee paper which taught me the takeown command.

@Moshe there wasn't any need to do that... but, glad it is working
you don't really want to take ownership of it :/ .. but anyway... at least it is working!

Took ownership to rename.
wipes off hands
Thanks!
@william may I throw up a blog post about this?
On my blog that is.

I am writing one up at the moment!
but... now I know that the stickey key method is public, I don't think anything will really happen

Ok. Cool. Let me see yours when it is done then. :-)

Does Process Lasso worth it's price? Oo
Yup, does properly what it advertises. But in general you shouldn't need that...

@TomWijsman - This may take a while!!!
If I get addicted, I'm blaming you :P

It's much better optimizing your idle cycles than to waste money on a tool that manages cycles that don't need to be consumed in the first place.
@WilliamHilsum It should go fairly quick at this time directly.
I'm not entirely sure whether direct or P2P would be faster...
@WilliamHilsum Well, there comes the moment that you need to decide whether to buy it or not.

I doubt it will even play on my machine (HD3000) - will try in lowest quality... if it doesn't no harm! ... If it does, I will play a skirmish or one mission... (whatever I can in this edition) just to get the feel (never played star craft before), then I will leave it as I have so much work for the next few weeks
@TomWijsman It is doing 1MB per 3 seconds... so, slower than my max, but I am in no rush

I think you should be able to play it...
Well, start with the tutorial if you are new to RTS.
Campaign differs a bit from multiplayer.
You can indeed set yourself up a 1v1 against an Easy/Medium computer.
I lost twice in a 3v3 team game today due to the same dude randomly appearing up in the match search...
He is like a new player that got ranked higher by luck or perhaps he played together with two guys, he shouldn't be playing in teams of my league... :/

@TomWijsman RTS is by far my favourite genre - I am a long time C&C fan (pre generals)... I own SC1 battle chest, but, never had time to install it... and... apart from the odd 20-30 minutes for SE game on, or, I really need to clear my head, I haven't had time for games in years... :(

4:07 AM
I haven't ever played SC1...
I come from the Age of Empire/Mythology series from Microsoft.

My main problem is that I just get hooked far too easy... I have to do everything - If it is fallout, I save the game often and try different possibilities... RPGs, I have to try every combination, explorer every part of a map e.t.c. ... I just prefer not to even start on a game as I know I can't stop myself!

Yeah, I've always been hooked to a single game too. Mainly StarCraft II now...

I loved Age of Empires (1 and 2)... never got in to Mythology

Love the detail of strategy there.

English Longbowmen with priests at the back and mass spawn knights (I think it was)... used to love it!!!

4:11 AM
They kind of cut the mass producing with Mythology, and added titans and god powers and that kind of stuff...
Funny enough, I would play Age of Empires/Mythology quite different now.
Like scouting with units, splitting up in two groups and attack from different angles. Taking one or two units and try to take out some villagers...
SC2 has really changed my view on RTS games.
I'm not used to Age of Empires 1 and 2 anymore, last time I played Age of Empires 2 this year it was a lot of figuring out.

Now I am thinking of my favourite strategy game... Star Trek Armarda 2.... Loved that game so much!

I think I would be able to play Age of Mythology a bit more fluently...

argh... I want to play it! Got to ressist!

Never played that.

SC2 has really changed you then!?

4:14 AM
Supreme Commander 2 (SupCom 2, not to be confused with SC2) was something I started and looked quite fun too...

TA + the mods were better though... SC/SC2 were not bad... but... I think the original was much better

@WilliamHilsum Yeah, Age of Empires was like "I mass one army and go defeat where I know the enemy is".

ahh... now you got me thinking of springTA... the open source version! I got so hooked, I went to the top rank in a matter of weeks :/ Can't get started on that again!
... but, if you ever wanted to install it, let me know!

SC2 is like "I go scout and see what my opponent is planning, I harass him and will push from different angles to get his economy broken or get a more superior army myself"
Heard of that game once...

if you mean spring - it is amazing... an open source engine that is fully TA compatible... so powerful and amazing what they have done - springrts.com

4:19 AM
My problem with a lot of games is, I start with them and I never get to complete them.

hehe - I buy them and don't play half, the ones I do, I play until the end and I have done almost every combination etc.!

Kind of like exams, then a reinstallation due to a new version of Windows; and the save game gets saved somewhere but I never reinstall the game and load up the save game again...

I have a hard drive somewhere with old saves
ohh... one game I never got to finish that really bugged me - enter the matrix! (because of exams!) .... ahh, got to stop talking to you, you are making me think of games!!!

My entire data collection is kind of a mess and it would take long to get everything neatly organized into folders...
My external drive is mostly except for some backups folders.
But it's like, my Downloads folder is filled with a lot of files of which I probably only need 25% of or less...
@WilliamHilsum I finished that one, after trying the famous helicopter game crash for quite some times... ^^

4:25 AM
@TomWijsman ditto!
@Sathya :P

@WilliamHilsum Hmm, are you early awake or do you also still have to go sleep like me?
Gotta go sleep, cya...

seriously? ?
you put all sorts of synonyms and yet some dumbass person comes with a weird tag

@TomWijsman Still not asleep! Goodnight!
@Sathya There is always one!

hm
ahh hell
mwhahahaha - i googled up a odd looking spammy post with no link recommending a bit of software and the username... and turned up a whole load of posts by someone with the same name recommending it

5:36 AM
hm
imgur seems down

@JourneymanGeek yep..
since the past hour or so

Wow, I have had Chrome up for about a month+ ... Didn't realise just how much memory it was taking up with all my tabs :/

(granted in.linkedin.com/pub/ranvir-kumar/1b/569/a35 and god knows how much other things points at a rather amateurish attempt at SEO... )

5:51 AM
Is imgur off or is my machine just playing up? - Image of Chrome memory usage failed to upload twice :/
@JourneymanGeek Fair enough imho.

@WilliamHilsum imgur.com has a notice about being in emergency mode

Looking him up on LinkedIn - Your a cyber sleuth!
@Sathya Thanks! Maybe I should of checked their home page!

> Emergency maintenance We're currently expirencing issues with uploading and viewing some images, and are working on correcting them now. Please check back soon for updates.
@JourneymanGeek na. tbh I doubt if he'll ever come back...

@WilliamHilsum: i did something more insidious. I googled him ;p
i'm like a regular hacker james bond or something, with less guns, booze and girls
I think imgur is back up

6:15 AM
Did you just do ravinar then the company on a hunch? ... People called me a spy :P

6:30 AM
lol two answers, both with products by the same name with no actual link in the answer. Ranvir is an indian name, which is uncommon for spambots, which tend to go by common western names. It smelt funny, so i figured i'd google the company he recommended, and his name
and... facebook.com/ranvirkumar84?sk=wall he has links to everything he posts on facebook... and i'll stop now, cause i have better things to do ;p

hopefully not too many images uploaded before they fix it

@Boris_yo not 'til now
@WilliamHilsum yeah, I work for Logica!

And Kingfisher! Nice! Wonder if it tastes better in India!

@WilliamHilsum what project, if I may ask

@WilliamHilsum How much SuperUser pays you?
@WilliamHilsum Per hour.

@Boris_yo About £90-£100 ... (I wish) ... I am unpaid of course!

4:44 PM
@WilliamHilsum well, it is one of the best local beers in India

@WilliamHilsum You said you leaving SuperUser. Why you leave?

@Sathya I can't remember... I will try to take a look
@Boris_yo Read the blog post above it!

@WilliamHilsum ok..
bonus points for anyone figuring out what T-shirt I'm wearing ;P

}} Mylo Xyloto (pronounced ) is the upcoming fifth studio album by English alternative rock band Coldplay, set for release on 24 October 2011. Writing and recording Chris Martin stated that he does not believe "bands should keep going past the age of 33," but later rephrased this to say that what he meant was that they must proceed "as if it's our last, because that's the only way to proceed" in December 2008, adding that he thought the band would never split. Bassist Guy Berryman, who earlier wrote that the band will "just have to start work and see how it shapes up", reported that the ...

Anyone else using Waterfox here?

@Shiki Huh? Nevermind. Another FireFox clone.
@Sathya Thoughts?

Q: Fact or fiction, Do hard drives re-write data when only reading?

PsycogeekFact or fiction without any friction, I have heard in passing on the web only about 2 times, that hard drives will re-write the data onto the platter when Only reading the data off of that platter. Question applies to modern normal consumer hard drives with spinning platters, and read/write head...

(Yes my finger is hovering over the close button)

@Diago I'd agree with the close button click
> If i am supposed to have a specific problem, then: For very long term storage of data, if this is actually true, then reading the data once a year could insure a better magnetic polarity differance. For long term storage not only would it be good to spin it up and get the motor moving, but to do a read of the data one time.

5:00 PM
Done

@Diago alright.

What's with all these new Somewhere on the internet... questions popping up all over the place?
Two in a row
@Sathya Was I too fast?

@Diago Nope. I'd have done the same
@Shiki No, and I'm not convinced about it's utility or claims.

@Shiki I have to say you run some of the strangest software I have seen. (Purely based on your questions so far)

@Diago @Sathya - good call!

5:03 PM
@WilliamHilsum It always is :P
It's been hours since I last irritated a user, so I needed something to destress

hehe! :P

Diago, stirring Super Users' hornets since 2008
:P

@Diago - You should give it a try. It's really awesome. :)

anyhow time to go to sleep, have a good one folks

5:05 PM
@Sathya Goodnight!

@Shiki 1. I run a Mac. 2. I run a Mac. 3. I run a.... I don't need awesome. I use awesome everyday. What I need is mind blowing.
@Sathya Sleep well

@Diago Bah :P

@Diago - So you use AwesomeWM on Mac? :O

@WilliamHilsum I actually deleted my Windows boot camp today when I realized I haven't used it in 4 months

5:07 PM
And I only use Windows at work for coding, which is slowing down since I am planning to move that across.

@Diago Oh well... I have a mac here as well now (Ios development... Too slow in a VM)... but... apart from aesthetics, I really don't get it! ... not worth having a debate about though!

@WilliamHilsum Agreed. I didn't get it either. Now that I got it.... I love it. My house will be PC free in another 6 months once I can get rid of the server.

@Diago What will you replace the server with? Just a NAS or something?

@WilliamHilsum I already have a Lian Li DAS connected. I am thinking of getting the Synology 1511 or 2411 with all my software loaded. Otherwise the Mac Mini
Since the Lian Li already works with the Synology, and it's awesome.

Cool, well... FYI, If you were not to go PC Free, one cool thing that I purchased on recommendation from a few people here was a new HP Micro Server, in England and some other regions, they are doing them at ~£100 which is a bargain for a full ESX compatible machine... and 4 hard drive slots, so, makes an amazing nas/similar unit and very low power usage

5:18 PM
@WilliamHilsum I was looking at that at one stage. However the DAS solution works well, it's currently got 7.5TB over 5 x 2TB drives with RAID 5

Not seen the Lian Li DAS... Looks cool...

Which will last me till next year
@WilliamHilsum It's quiet and took 5 minutes to setup. A colleagues introduced me to it and it was worth every cent. I introduced him to the Synology which he bought and he loves it.

@Diago :P Only next year! ... We are very similar! I have 4x1TB and 2x2TB (along with a few other bits), but, I use Raid 1, so you have a lot more space than me!

@WilliamHilsum The server's operating drive is 2 x 1.5TB's in RAID 1

I find it so hard to choose units as they are just so similar :/

5:21 PM
I am pedantic. We have closed on 2.5TB of HD Movies and growing. I am not losing them for anything. So I spend a lot of time researching before spending the money
If I get the DS 2411 I am filling it with 12x 3TB drives

@Diago wow! lol... well, I got a bunch of 2TB drives for my micro servers, but, haven't time to set it up yet... 3TB drives were too expensive for me

They are pricey now, but will drop when the 4 and 5's come out next year
I am waiting for SSD prices to drop

@Diago I have been meaning to get a SSD for ages for my machine... but, I feel they are a big waste for a NAS unit though

@WilliamHilsum I want 2 for our Mac's. But I want big sized drives which is why I am delaying. A colleague set up a RAID 10 server with 24 x 160GB SSD's
Blinding Fast is an understatement. They copy TB's in minutes.

Just looked up that Synology unit you said... For the price, that is amazing... May have to consider it for myself when I fill up the Micro Servers!
Nice!

5:27 PM
@WilliamHilsum Try the online OS demo. You'll be even more surprised. It even allows 3rd Party Addons
On that note. Time for some coffee, games and TV shows. At the same time.

My friend has been selling a few Synology devices and told me they were good... I got burned on a few rubbish 2 unit ones years ago... I haven't checked them out for a while... certainly looks cool
@Diago hehe, I should get on with work! Talk to you later!

6:14 PM
@Shiki No, I run my own optimized compilation of the latest alpha release. Should outperform Waterfox because they miss some things like some flags and they are on a more stable version...

1 hour later…
7:21 PM
Something really troubling - a website I did for a friend about a year ago www.bexleypark.co.uk (warning, do not click without reading on... )now comes up with a warning page, and I did it from Chrome (which I think is safe) inspected the code, and it has been infected/changed with a bunch of stuff.... This website is pure html, no php, asp or anything else... Anyone know how this is possible? I can only think it was a) FTP password compromised or b) web host compromised (It was the club's ISP)

@TomWijsman - I've tried to compile Firefox's source a couple of times already from the info I found with Google and on Pale Moon's info page... but no success
it really IS a hassle

@WilliamHilsum Either has access to the FTP or used some kind of exploit.
@Shiki Why not read the MDN documents themself?

Fail: I've opened my RDP connection from the taskbar, opened up 'cmd', and then typed: sudo halt

@TomWijsman AFAIK, my client keeps the FTP passwords in a DB with his credit card numbers, banking and other details - as far as he knows, nothing else has been hacked and he hasn't seen any problems (he has good security)... I think it is purely a problem at the web host, but, they aren't owning up :/

@TomWijsman - Could you link me a working HOWTO?
Pretty pwease~?

Thank you!

@Shiki: There you go. :)

It's Tuesday, Tuesday
Gotta compile my browser
oh well I should stfu and get to work

I think my compilation got a bit outdated by now...

well, I want to have an amd64 build with nocona and stuff

7:31 PM
I should automate it a bit more, rather than looking up the Pymake syntax and such every time.

(mainly targeted for Core2+ ... but the "core2" flag in GCC will run the app slower than "nocona")

NOD32 is like some kind of Tamagotchi
It asks for "attention" every once in a while
when I click on the bubble, nothing.
Poor thing. :(

Q: Can you help me identify an audio player with a green square as an icon?

PaskI'm trying to remember the name of an audio player for windows whose icon was a green square. Just a green square, like 10x10px. I can't remember its name. I know that it was really light. Do you know which one is it?

I am wondering if these are just two persons advertising the product.
Given that the original answer was just "Billy." and it is the only thing they have done on Super User...
Perhaps a mod might want to keep an eye on them by leaving a note on their acconut.

Q: Do firefox "lock tab" option automatically refresh the tab every X seconds/minutes?

Fire-Dragon-DoLI just discovered this feature of firefox 7 and I find it really interesting. The only part I didn't understood is if it automatically refresh tabs every X time, that's really something important because I don't know if I have to do it every time I visit the page Any information will be useful, ...

I flagged it requesting migration to SU. For some reason I thought I was on Sec.SE at the moment.
It's been a long day.
