@WilliamHilsum: works for me. Want me to dropbox it?

12:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek It's ok thanks. Surfasb put it on Dropbox for me - thanks anyway.

erf - superuser.com/questions/347233/… i'm trying to work out if he mispelled OCZ
hm, turns out the old sun keyboard i kept on a whim is a sun 5c. its totally incompatable with anything i have, but apparently is the inspiration for the happy hacking keyboard ;p
hm, no, people just seem to like it ;p

1:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek Happy hacking keyboard?

ya, low profile keyboard, often with no markings on the keys, supposed to be really comfy en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Hacking_Keyboard
is currently a bit of a keyboard expert, till the next upgrade ;p

for some reason voting to close isn't working for me >_>
and i'm not even on a experimental browser
superuser.com/questions/343919/… anyone awake enough to check if i'm the only one not seeing the vote to close radiobuttons?

@JourneymanGeek I am assuming it worked because your name is on the close.

o0
nope. i never managed to vote to close that
unless i did and forgot, which would be bad, but probably a question for seniors.stackexchange

7:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek You did vote to close, probably why the second time you didn't see the buttons. I have that issues at work due to our proxies.

ahh. so its just a memory error id10t ;)
no worries then

7:28 AM
morning all

Ello

not seen you in chat for a while @Diago, how are you?

Doing well thanks. Chat is normally blocked at work but we are testing a new proxy

ah, fair enough

8:23 AM
Launchpad still won't work. :(

@JourneymanGeek 1056 total ones, actually

gah, @Sathya beat me D:

:p
I've a little over 1100 Answers

@Sathya: I was going by my profile, not the seekrit mod stuff. besides, i wouldn't want to admit to 56 answers to closed questions ;p

8:47 AM
I'm at 279

@JourneymanGeek :P I'm going by the profile... except it shows deleted ones too :P

that is impressive, if you count rep per answer ;p

Does Process Lasso worth it's price? Oo
I'm thinking of buying a license but the trial version lacks some 'pro' features. Does it worth the price? Oo

9:10 AM
@Shiki never heard of that tool..

@Sathya Apparantly it is an optimization app
Optimize your processes, cores, and power consumption with automated rules, or just let ProBalance automatically restrain unruly apps to improve responsiveness!

@Diago ah.

@Diago And what do you think? Does it worth the price?

My markup skills has seriously died

Or it's just some kind of marketing stuff?

9:12 AM
@Diago :)

@Shiki Wouldn't know. I have never used nor will I. I use OSX everyday

@Shiki I call shenanigans

:<

I have never ever used optimization tools, either on Windows, Mac or Unix. They always cause more problems then what it's worth

If your trying to fix a problem using them, your not looking in the right place.

Amen.

The hardest part about learning Xcode and Objective-C? Getting the syntax right!

meeting time, bbl

If I could implement some better cooling to my ThinkPad T500... >.>
have fun, @Sathya
maybe I'll just try and put my notebook into a shoe box

@Shiki Every machine I have owned that had a cooling problem had to be replaced, because the problem was hardware related
Or I was using the wrong hardware for doing the wrong thing

@Diago - I do the latter I guess. A business laptop is not made for gaming for example. But it would be awesome if I could "fix" the cooling.
Sadly, the 'rollcage' and the heavy plastic case won't even feel a 12cm cooler... or even a huge fan.. nothing. It's just too thick.

@Shiki If your heavy into gaming get a proper setup. Even my high powered MacBook frowns down on me doing heavy long term gaming.

9:20 AM
Well, I'll get a better laptop when I can, but for now, nothing :/
The sad thing is... if I limit the CPU usage for gaming, the game will behave weird
like the mouse will lag
the game runs with ~200+fps
but the mouse behaves weird

I found this particularly amusing
I remember when "enable advanced performance" was all the rage.
But it turns out that the option actually doesn't do anything. . .

I do not understand most of this "buggy behaviour", we have had UPSes since win95 , and never pulled anything or even did a normal restart until well after data was completed writing. If "accounts" wasnt using a UPS , they shouldnt be doing accounts :-)
Of course if we ask Accounts, they will say , " How the Mailroom sends out packages be that UPS or USPS , is none of our concern" :-)

2 hours later…
2:31 PM
@Psycogeek What in the world are you talking about??

@surfasb nothing important, i was just reading your link about the cache flush.
"They fixed the bug but left an option to return to the old buggy behavior". AKA the speedy blind write , that i would far prefer.

3:05 PM
@WilliamHilsum: BEFORE CPU 61°C GPU 56°C, AFTER CPU 50°C, GPU 48°C

@TomWijsman before/after what?

Dust cleaning... :D

lol
wow

That's exactly the same use case, just watching the stream...

dusty house?

3:06 PM
Haven't cleaned the laptop for a long while.
I noticed I did something FUBAR after all 12 screws were back in place...
Booted up, watched stream, a minute later suddenly the laptop shut down.
Boot it back up, hmm, BEEP BEEP BEEP (and the icons started blinking)...
Seems I connected the GPU Fan to a connector for an additional fan instead of the GPU Fan connector. >_<

@TomWijsman Missed it by --->||<---- that much

So, in case it does hit 100°C, the safety mechanism works! xD

ouch... hopefully no lasting damage!

@WilliamHilsum Nope, on reboot it doesn't use the GPU so it's just a spike...

ah, ok

3:12 PM
Well, now I hope to not see the crashes for a while, it probably spikes the temperature at the moment of a crash or something.
Because from weekly it suddenly started to become daily...
Going to see what FurMark tells me.

This is so annoying... I am not getting a lot of email... Is Google DNS down or something? I am using afraid.org for dns which is usually good, but, some people have rung me up and said their mail isn't working... nslookup ezpcltd.com fails from google dns (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4) but it works from opendns
so, not sure my dns provider is to blame... but, so annoyed... just so busy and this is all I need!

@WilliamHilsum I'm on Google DNS and I can visist that site.

I can visit it, but, queries are failing and mx lookup is returning nothing

C:\Users\tomwij>nslookup ezpcltd.com 8.8.4.4
Server:  google-public-dns-b.google.com
Address:  8.8.4.4

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    ezpcltd.com
Address:  87.194.162.98

argh, and, it seems to be back up here as well :/ Sorry for that

3:15 PM
:D

maybe it was just down briefly and cached or something
So fed up of third party services failing on me... I think I may just self host DNS on my webserver.

I always wondered about that, does my secondary DNS server , get applied when there is no resolve, or no DNS server at the locaction? In other words can it be a backup in all occasions?

MX Toolbox (brilliant service if you haven't used it) - is still showing my server/dns as offline... I guess I just have to wait for the timeout/TTL and for it all to update. mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=mx%3aezpcltd.com
@Psycogeek dns 2 gets queried if there is a timeout on dns 1

so only if the first server doesnt work at all?

only timeouts on querying, it isn't application aware, e.g. will not failover if a service fails... e.g. web server doesn't respond... with the exception of clients/applications that are smart enough. e.g. a mailserver may query mx2 if mx1 is down...

3:20 PM
thanks. I often wonder if i should use 1 ISP provided dns, and one "other" dns that i scrounge off the web.
or use both ISP DNSes having no real backup

@Psycogeek It's not a speedy blind write though. It's the default cached behavior. The buggy behavior merely ignores flush commands.

right now, I am thinking I am going to put DNS on my own server... only real problem is putting all my eggs in one basket, but, if the server goes down, I am rather screwed anyway!

85°C - 86°C using Furmark for a while.

@surfasb "But once Windows 95 fixed the bug, these programs started to run very slowly since the Commit calls were suddenly doing actual work." ok, and ignoring the flush calls, doesnt that allow the thing to keep pumping out data without wating for the flush to return that it finished?
@surfasb I think of things overly simplistic because I am not the one writing the program, just the one waiting for it.

@Psycogeek The whole point of making a flush call is when performance isn't as much of a priority as file integrity. So if the program wanted to make the flush call without waiting for it to finish, it shouldn't make the call in the first place.

3:33 PM
@studiohack No indeeed! Although I've been slightly active on the site even though not on chat! I've been terribly busy these last couple of weeks!

@Psycogeek Yeah, that's the suck part. The only way to fix it is for the dev to unwind his head and fix the program :(
@Psycogeek Hence the existence of the setting in the first place.
The article highlights the perils of "fixing" a bug.

@sufasb: Re superuser.com/questions/347233/… I guess you are right, user27449's cable marked "eSATA" is really SATA. Odd.

hello

not really. I vaguely recall early sata cables being similar

@HackToHel: Hello

3:37 PM
howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/… this ain't working! Any ideas why ?
os win 7

@Psycogeek I remember a similar episode at work. I noticed a test database was in the wrong spot. That weekend, I moved it into the test lab network. Lo and behold!! That monday I get a call "Hey where is our Test11 database?"
@HackToHell What's the error?

@HackToHell that same zip worked for me.

@RedGrittyBrick I figured he thought you needed special cables to get SataIII speeds. . .

63°C with StarCraft II maxed out, seems it does fine...

@TomWijsman That's about how hot my GPUs (4870s XF). But I need three fans on them otherwise they downclock, because the memory overheats. . .

3:41 PM
ow

@surfasb sorry for the delay , here is the error
any ideas why ??

You shouldn't start messing around with system folders... it is there for genuine NTFS issues such as getting to other users files / locked out ACLs etc. If you mess around with ACLs on System Volume Information, you can seriously damage your system.

@WilliamHilsum lol i do that on my xp vm regularly ... i will try not to do anything extremely stupid

@HackToHell thats new, never tired it on that folder, doesnt work on that folder here either.

@Psycogeek hmm

@surfasb: Man... I love the effects on the maxed out settings, they also allow for much better micro.
Better to identify what unit they are shooting at and what units died and so on...
You can even see what unit a Stargate is producing. (Saw that once as a Day9 tip)

@TomWijsman ...Stargate?
oh... skim reading... SC2
got to try it one day!

@WilliamHilsum The starter's edition is free, allows you to do Campaign and the Terran race in Custom Multiplayer on a few maps.

@TomWijsman I get too addicted to games... if I download, I will play non stop!

@WilliamHilsum Hehe, I just discovered how to make the AI in the downloadable version of Galcon more hard. Getting addicted to that game... >_<
Usually pro gamers lower settings to be able to play the game better.
But it seems that for StarCraft II higher settings actually give a benefit...

3:56 PM
... where can I get it from? I can't see a download :/

@Psycogeek got access !! restart explorer as Administrator ! bye guys !

is it hidden on their page :/ found it via Google, but, can't find a link on the main starcraft page

that sucks, the sign up page prevents pasting... so I can't copy a random one straight fro keepass... I hate sites that do that
7GBs... I need to clean some room first! lol

This past weekend, CHAOS was working the New York Comic Con (NYCC) here in New York City. It was kind of amazing. But CHAOS wasn’t the only one working hard this weekend….

Meet Bubbles, the Stack Exchange mascot! Some of you might recognize her from her cameo on the podcast video stream a few weeks ago, but her official debut was this weekend at Comic Con. We’ll be honest: not everyone here at Global Domination Headquarters was completely sold on getting Bubbles. I’m not naming any names, Joel, but some people just didn’t see the value in it. Well, the joke’s on those people, ’cause Bubbles was a smash hit. …

@Blogbot With a name of Bubbles, I am just going to think of the Little Britain character

@TomWijsman the way he does the numbers confuses the hell out of me... but... my brother does things like that all the time!

9:51 PM
@TomWijsman I have no idea why he takes out 2 in the beginning. I have a friend who does this as well. It's awesome.
@Blogbot WTH!!!??? What happened to clippy?

My brother -

@WilliamHilsum That'll make the ladies melt.

10:16 PM
@surfasb Shame he doesn't teach me!

@WilliamHilsum Looks like you gotta go with good looks.

@surfasb lol... i think he got them as well :(
