Facebook! Stop suggesting that girl that I love that is already occupied... Yes, she has the most mutual friends with me and no, she will not friend me. >_<
One option is that I start unfriending her friends! o_O
Would be funny: How to break up with someone? Tell her "I am currently unfriending all our mutual friends on Facebook.".
Hackers edition: "I am currently unfriending all my friends from your Facebook."
Well, I ended up unfriending only one... :(
The other way is to make sure I have more mutual friends with other friends... :)

12:56 AM
@TomWijsman: or not use friendface

Or call in the monkeys... Greasemonkey.
A script to filter people you have loved in the past.

1:28 AM
lol. Personally i think livecds as installers is dumbing down things too much. I generally use a minimal installer disk ;p

@TomWijsman Wow... I know it off by heart! Isn't it wait for load... Language, next, install, custom, select disk (if new machine, next)... then... all done... apart from type your name... I was asked more things when I upgraded OSX!

OS X asks things? ;p

@JourneymanGeek "Wouldn't you rather install Windows?" Yes/No :P

;p
Its apple! They know what you want better than you do!
this is an interesting test. I borrowed a regular mouse to use with my laptop to see if it fits with my workflow before i get a better one
i haven't used it in two days

@JourneymanGeek And the verdict is?

1:41 AM
I don't know. Apparently i don't use a mouse with my laptop ;p
problem is,using trackpoint on laptop dosen't quite work that well with full sized keyboards

@JourneymanGeek I can't stand laptop pads... I like the old fashioned nipple! :) (seriously, not being dirty!)

2:28 AM
@WilliamHilsum: thats what i use

3:07 AM
@TomWijsman Played SC2 - works brilliant on my machine... granted it may not be pretty compared to high end graphics cards... Anyway... Annoyingly, no skirmish maps work, only a few missions and 3 challenges (and online)... I played the first challenge, and... it is fun... but... I don't think I have the time to get in to a game now... so, going to leave it installed, but, I don't think I will be playing again any time soon

3 hours later…
5:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek are you around?

1 hour later…
6:45 AM
now i am @WilliamHilsum

@JourneymanGeek My dad has just started his new contract and he sent me his business card... but, he won't tell me what his job is, and, I can't translate.... I don't suppose you can read what this is?

its in chinese >_>
so no
however, that looks like an address

Sorry! I thought it was mainly Standard English characters there, and this looked Chinese, but, I don't understand why he has a Chinese business card... I thought maybe I was wrong and you guys in Singapore understand it!

and... its probably an address, googling the zip code tells me the building he works in ;p
hm, prolly cause vodaphone dosen't have operations here

@JourneymanGeek Maybe they do now!?

6:52 AM
yeah, we use standard english mostly, donno why they would use chinese

@JourneymanGeek He must have an English one he isn't sending me!!! Anyway, thanks for that! if you bump in to him, say hi! :P

lol. I used to work in the same area ;p
used to pass by that building every week

Starting to hear that Disney song in my head... "It's a small world"...

its a bloody small country after all ;p

I am just looking around the area on Google Maps... looks... tall!

7:01 AM
lol. its our equivilent of... hm... wall street or canary warf (i think)
its the financial center

@JourneymanGeek You know your Cities! I understand - thanks!

city! ;p

I meant Wall Street and Canary Wharf!
Unless you think they are in the same place, in which case, you don't know them :P

ahh ;p

(or unless you are being ironic, in which case, I sound like an idiot!)

7:03 AM
I know lots of random crap. reading comprehension needs a little work it seems tho
naw, i misunderstood

Oh... I see what you mean... ahh, your fine!

7:16 AM
hm, there, done combining 3 different versions of a document by hand
god, i hate group projects

oh TTS support for chrome, woot! ( blog.chromium.org/2011/10/… )

morning all

The only thing I miss is the complete webRequest API (for AdBlock and Ghostery)
@DMA57361 - morning!

chrome has too much cool shit ;p

well, money = developers -> more features, stuff in shorter time

7:20 AM
/me has been using the remote access plugin a fair bit
@Shiki: well, i'm still primarily a FF user ;p

(I can't understand Mozilla's new policy. They have limited money, limited resources .. yet they start the new webOS, the game platform, etc etc ... what the heck?)
I mean they did a great job back then with the normal versions, the normal browser they were making for years... and now they are totally going to HTML and stuff. What's the point in turning an excellent browser into a dumb window which can display a simple site?)

game platform?

yes that new game .... that fox stuff
I could understand if they would go in the direction of money ... like introducing a store, etc etc. But this? This is a waste of money. :(

ok, that IS bizzare

:D

7:24 AM
could be a personal project, or trying to keep up with google

btw if there is Unity (plugin) and Flash ... why would I want html5 and stuff to game in my browser?
I guess the latter. But Mozilla != Google. They should realize that. :/

whose app store is mainly their equivilent of a combo of addons.moz and kongregate
lol. i wouldn't mind seeing a flashless future

Well, it's 64-bit now, stable enough. I don't mean it's that good, but you can block it, it runs... I have no problem with it...
I mean... I can't even block a GIF or html5
Going back in time. Enjoy having epilepsy and loud background music without controls. :(((

don't forget
THE MARQUEE TAG

7:31 AM
eh
The only browser i really wanna see dead is IE6

iunno, I like plain websites
I mean... you really don't need too much to have an ergonomic, professional-looking website
At least not for the visitors ... and any CMS should be able to generate a simple/standard enough page for them
(IMHO)

7:48 AM
well, my website is a basic dokuwiki
i need to make it medium on dark rather than dark on light tho

8:16 AM
@Diago - Any ideas how could I improve my question about remote desktop servers?

8:41 AM
@Shiki Are you trying to solve a problem or trying to create a list?

@Diago - More like creating a list about the possible clients
* The possibilities that is

The only improvement would be to have an actual problem your trying to solve. A list of server software that can do X is a no go
Then your in the wrong place :)

Then how could I describe...hmm
What would be the best way to ask which is the fastest?
Like UltraVNC is quite fast... LogMeIn is not so fast, got mirrored traffic, etc

@Shiki Again. Your in the wrong place. SU frowns down on and will close any type of comparison question. If you have a detailed technical problem, then at a push you might get lucky, but asking which is fastest, is highly volatile, since it can't really be answered conclusively, it is all a matter of opinion on a case by case basis.

Hmm well... right about that
What about the "Free anti-virus solution" and such questions? Can't find them for some reason. :/

8:53 AM
@Shiki They have been and are slowly starting to be deleted
Since they don't meet the FAQ and there has been a huge cleanup campaign
To avoid people using them as an excuse to keep their own questions open, among others.
There has been a few meta posts about it from what I recall.

oh
so that's why ... thanks for the clarfication

It's a sad day when I am actually going to post a question to the Apple developer forum since I can't find an answer on StackOverflow

@Diago haven't received any answers on SO?

9:15 AM
Visual Studio ~82% :(

@Sathya Not for this question:

Q: XCode 4.2 is missing the iOS5 SDK for the Simulator

DiagoI created an empty Single View application using Xcode 4.2 on OSX Lion 10.7.2 targeting iPhone 5. The project built happily however when launching the simulator I receive the following error message: iOS Simulator could not find the SDK. The SDK may need to be reinstalled. I then tried targ...

Although I will admit it is highly specific and I took a chance asking it.

@Diago ah.

9:46 AM
I despise it when I spent time building a proper answer, knowing that the 2 paragraph short answer above mine is going to get all the reputation.

morning people
@Diago You mean the typical way Stack Overflow works?
happens to me all the time

@slhck Most of the exchange sites actually.

@Diago I'm lucky SU isn't getting that much traffic, but yeah, it's a general issue

@slhck You would be surprise, we get a lot of traffic, but not as much questions
Please, someone, tell me closing this as not a real question out right is not a mistake?

Q: Live Streaming between continents

ChrisHow do I go about streaming live between two events happening at the same time on different continents?

go ahead
doesn't mention any details at all

10:03 AM
@Sathya Bleh. Beat me to it

@Diago ;P

Stack Overflow or Webapps? superuser.com/q/348259/48078

G'bye for now! bbl

@slhck SO.
@Sathya Better fit for SO?

Q: Cross-platform Mercurial settings

texnicI have project files in Dropbox, VC-ed with Mercurial. This way I can work on the same code in Windows at work and in Linux at home. The central repository is on our institute Samba file server, which I have mounted in Linux (as /mnt/server/) and in Windows (as a network drive Z:). Now, Mercurial...

@Shiki Bye!
so, @Diago, @Sathya, I know you're programmers … do you have any idea on parsing a boolean query? Like, for example "term1 AND term2 OR term 3 NOT term4" – like, how you programmatically do this?
i.e. building a parse tree out of this

10:16 AM
@slhck Which language and how many levels?

(in a meeting)

@Diago Java. The thing is, it doesn't necessarily have to be a syntax tree. I have an information retrieval system that's already built, and now I just need to parse and work through such a query in order to get the information out.
I'm probably only struggling on searching for the right keywords.

@slhck You lost me at the first word sorry :|

@Diago Haha, no worries :D

But i would either use an if then or an case statement.

10:20 AM
It's a pretty tough assignment I have to do there
I wonder who came up with it

Probably someone like me. I use to set up the final exams for our first year IT students when I was still a trainer.
With 12 years working experience at the time, most of them failed.

haha
well, the funny thing is, I know the guy who set up the course the year before, and I showed him the new assignments (some other people did them this year), and he was kinda surprised

@Diago I was thinking on the lines of Programmers
@slhck sorry, I've no clue..

@Sathya No problem :P My brain hurts even thinking about it …

@slhck I can only imagine...

10:32 AM
whistles

yay!

and now you're gonna close evurrrrything

big grin

woo, ranked 7th on MSO for this quarter! o/

@slhck probably not the right way to do it, but you could try converting the string to postfix notation and then parse it from there. The shunting yard algo will convert to postfix, and the first link already has an algo explaining how to calculate the result from post fix

10:51 AM
@DMA57361 Holy smokes!
But thank you!

lol, Holy smokes as in "that looks useful" or as in "that looks ridiculous" :P

@DMA57361 It looks useful but if that's the solution then it's bloody ridiculous to have that as a small subtask for a large assignment :P

fair point :)
the simple solution is just to find a keyword, split the string on it, stick each half in a branch of a tree, then repeat for every branch until you run out of key words
just make sure you handle operator precedence correctly, if there is any

ok I just got a mail from one of the course people, and they said it should be enough to put the search terms into an arraylist, and define a logic to work through the operators
including precendence
so, what you said :)
finally managed to empty his inbox!

@slhck Ctrl+A, Del? ;)

11:01 AM
@DMA57361 Haha. Well, I kinda created a new label called TODO, but that's another story :P

that's better than having the stuff todo mixed in the inbox with stuff you can ignore :)

exactly!

I basically either file stuff away or flag it for later, nothing stays in my inbox once I've read it

yeah, unless it's really something that needs a quick follow-up, but then it's best to do it right away I guess
haven't really looked into advanced GTD techniques, but it works out pretty well for me

yep

11:36 AM
@DMA57361 That's my process for personal mail. Up until 2 weeks ago I kept every email at work and then started doing the same thing at work. Now my life is more controlled
However, I only receive 20 - 30 emails a week, of which have is newsletters and being unsubscribed.

12:25 PM
@Diago Luxury! I've had 21 emails this morning - half being system status messages. I have 13390 unread messages. Too much info - I'll have to set some archive/deletion rules.

12:47 PM
Haha... I almost get a nervous breakdown if I see more than ten unread mails

@slhck I have to be extremely busy to ever have more then 10 unread emails. I have very strict rules around mail usage, and it is reserved for a small subset of people, even at work. If you want to talk to me, and know me, otherwise, I'll get a hold of you if I need to.
I don't even respond to Facebook messages.

@Diago Yeah, that's a good policy. I like to keep it similar … in fact, I don't think there's any mail I get that is not important, apart from a few very nasty newsletters that manage to get through the filter

1:10 PM
Hi

hi there @Psycogeek

Where is the view of all the editing? is that a feed?

what do you mean?

I am wondering , from talk in the meta, if every one of my endless edting of my Qs And As are showing up obnoxiously in some feed?

no, not really
your post is bumped to the front page for all to see
for suggested edits, there's a tool available for users with 10k and moderators

1:14 PM
oh well, that isnt good either nessisarily

and 10k / mods also get to see the most edited posts of a given timespan

Edited by Anyone right?

yup, "edited" as in number of edits, regardless who did them

so they do end up showing up somewhere for people to have to weed through?

something like this
but you don't have to use it, it's just an indicator for "there's something going on"
but, yeah, just a tiny feature

1:18 PM
thanks.

so, go ahead and edit as much as you like, I guess :P

i think i am still better off in the forums, i depend on 25 other opinions and I/O to figure out if i am even close.

@Psycogeek Why? I don't think your answers are bad

on a forum i can go one item at a time, get input , then make next guess as to the problem. here i could put a list of 50 things, and its probably the 35th one anyways :-)

haha
well if you don't have enough input, the question is not written well enough
(imo)

1:27 PM
if they or I knew what the problem was , and could ask the right question. .. they would have the answer.
already

well, not always, but yeah, I agree that the SE system doesn't work well for troubleshooting

i liked the idea in the meta of initiating a chat already. depends on how much Hit&Run the questions are.

Yes, that happens quite often
I also particularly love it when you ask people to edit and update information, and all they add is something along "it's still not working" :D

Call for a chat when the user is hours off waiting for a answer, and it will be just one more mess in the comments i made

yup

1:33 PM
Ohh so people really have updated thier questions , i didnt notice , , revisions , hmm.
I am sometimes hoping that if they would check a few things, someone really could answer it.
The guy asking for help with the device manager, I was going to tell him to go into device manager on halloween and just delete everything. Good time to crap your pants , then realise that it one aspect of the system that is pretty resilliant

haha, what?

1:49 PM
If he needs info on how to use the device manager, then it is just a FEAR therapy problem. Go into the device manager scared to death that your going to screw up your whole computer, and Delete stuff . in a few minutes or a boot, they will realise they can play around in the device manager.

headesks superuser.com/questions/348331/mouse-makes-my-computer-hang "what did the dog that bit you look like?" "It had 4 legs, and a tail"

lol ask them to take a picture @JourneymanGeek

@slhck: it sounds like one of those random gremlin situations

@JourneymanGeek My finger is hovering over not constructive?

@JourneymanGeek if you could find out why hundreds of peoples mouses are locking up and stalling and failing in Win7 , Microsoft would be eternally gratefull.

1:52 PM
@Diago: if it was a more .. competant user, she's either solve it herself, or give more useful info ;p

@JourneymanGeek So I am clicking the Vote button then?

@Psycogeek: i guess i'm lucky. I don't have enough comptuer issues

Actually I think this will be too localized. I am not sure the solution for her will work for any one else. Decisions. Decisions.

Super User always makes me wonder how many computer problems one individual can have.

@Diago: pondering my response. More specifically, trying to remember if it turns up in event viewer. It might end up being a useful question
@slhck: not enough, if they are fixable.

1:54 PM
@JourneymanGeek Sheesh, you're just creating help vampires :P

@slhck A few. It depends on how much you are willing to play, and how many are attributed to lack of knowledge
The reality of real problems vs. I think I have is actually quite high

Or lack of trying to find out yourself …

@slhck: I tend to expect the best of people. though once in a while i'm wrong ;p

@JourneymanGeek I agree actually. I could be a useful troubleshooting questions
@JourneymanGeek In that your on your own. I have given up that idea ages ago.

I'm an optimist XD. thought there's a few times...

1:56 PM
I am the same when people ask me why I use a Mac everyday. By choice. Simple. No discussion required. Now go back to your desk and work on your so called broken PS.

@JourneymanGeek many people solved the USB mouse problem by going PS2, oh wait that isnt solved, that is workaround.

@Diago: as far as systems go, its a whatever works policy for me. I like PCs cause i'm a tinkerer
@Psycogeek: one SPECIFIC mouse, and one SPECIFIC PC don't work

on one computer

ya
it works on the rest

i feex :-)

2:02 PM
i would just change mouse ;p

i would have it in 20 pieces on the workbench then find out it was a OS problem. . . . dont ask what happens around here when the ISP goes down for an Hour :-0

Did everyone miss the line that her keyboard didn't work either. Might help to ask if it is working when mouse is not connected? Since it would mean the problem is USB related

2:31 PM
does that still leave setting the bios to legasy USB ?

@Diago: or the system froze, which might turn up in event viewer
hm, sometimes i wish we could downvote comments
@Diago: see? INTERESTING QUESTION ;p

oh that would be good, finding out it was a lockup "mouse Kb dont work" does anything else work.

2:51 PM
hm
superuser.com/questions/340609/… i am tempted to vote this not constructive cause it'll never get an answer...

Q: my mouse doesnt work A: its your video card

@Psycogeek: in which case, its obviously those damned gremlins.

Hello
Guys can you tell me if it is possible to block specific business from charging credit card?

Pre or Post

3:00 PM
call up your bank and ask them

I wanted to know if this is possible in USA.

At least after the fact a fraudulent charge can be reversed by the bank, because i do not herass the bank or have problems like that often, they just do it without many questions.

herass?

I dont waste thier time, or have small problems normally.

Maximum that can be done is cancellation of credit card?

3:11 PM
yes re-issue a new number, any business , or database , or hacker that had the number , and the number is shut off, no more chanrges to that number.
Meaning, i would not have to cancel the account, just have them void out that card, and give me a new one.
all active charges on the previous card are still understood to be my responcibility, so the last few charges still have to be dealt with, but no more charges on that card can occur.

Charges before intentional charge by hacker?

any charges that still exist would have to be resolved. But if it is fraud or crime, then it is not difficult to dispute. Again, because I do not dispute things for years on end, it is easier for them to side with me.

I hear a lot of warnings about using credit cards online and people's fears.

3:27 PM
Smart people have different accounts for doing business online, including accounts they attach to PayPal and provide to online vendors.

3:45 PM
Baking doesnt work, it is just a Placebo. Anyone knows it it just the mere act of taking it all apart , finding nothing wrong with it, and putting it back together.
:-) this all assumes you get it back together, and doing it much more carefully and meticulously than it was originally assembled.

well, it apparently does seem to work with bad solder joints

Would it be smart to use throw-away credit card?

i dont understand how, with most of the stuff i have seen "baked" there is as many parts on the bottom of the board as the top. course mabey they use the broiler :-)
Mabey there are slething clues that indicate how well it worked "Turn on your printer and if you are lucky it should be working again" then "The official formatter board part number is: CC368-60001" hmm why would he need the part numbers :-)
@Borisyo I dont know what a throwaway credit card is, but that sounds like a good idea.

@Psycogeek Credit card that is not your main credit card and not tied to your main services so you can cancel it easily.

@JourneymanGeek lol
cool one

3:59 PM
@Borisyo that sounds like the thing to do.

@Psycogeek Yeah and try to find free credit card for 1st year as a bonus.

Ya think we should tell that "baker" that it doesnt work the same way in a Microwave oven :-)
there is another clue, by the time solder even starts flexing doesn't it reach the temperature of damaging the capacitors?
