Is there anyone here interested in the Greek proposal who hasn't signed up and voted yet? area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/101509/greek-language.

@LeeWoofenden that makes sense - very interesting! In answer to your previous question, I used to be a rather devout Christian - but found my true happiness in unlocking the universe using the Scientific Method
when I learned that there are over 4000 religions in the world, all saying that they are the true one, not the others - that was one of the main mechanisms for my de-conversion.

7:56 AM
@Atheist By "unlocking the universe", do you just mean "understand a very small part of how it works"? Anything more than that doesn't really sound like the Scientic Method at all - perhaps you could elaborate?
@Atheist If you learned that over the years there had been in excess of 4000 attempts at counterfeiting goods that had successfully fooled people that they were the genuine article, would you likewise conclude that there were no genuine originals in existence?

8:35 AM
LOL @bruisedreed my deeply religious ride into work tries the same line of questioning
as have so many - one told me it was steps to 'save' me - but I don't need to be 'saved', already are saved!
obviously it would be an improbable task to unlock all the mysteries of the universe - I just work to unlock my own small niche area of mysteries
@bruisedreed that's a bit of a strawman to me... all texts have been translated, interprreted etc...

11:23 AM
@Atheist Do you work in a scientific field?
@Atheist My religion also, of course, says its true. Otherwise what would be the point of believing it? However, it also says that God is present in all of the other religions of the world as well, and that the basics needed for salvation are present in every religion (assuming it's an actual religion, and not just a personality cult), even if there may also be many false beliefs in the various religions.
@Atheist See also my answer to this question here on C.SE:

Q: Are there any Christian sects that say salvation is based, in whole or in part, on your response to Jesus on Judgment Day?

GreatBigBoreI recently had a conversation with a Christian who believes that our choices during this life are not the only factors affecting salvation. Rather, God will be very lenient about our Earthly behavior, given that many of us are prevented for various reasons from seeing him clearly. So God's final ...

@Atheist And incidentally, my belief is that even being an atheist doesn't necessarily shut a person out of heaven. See: Do Atheists Go to Heaven? In my view, it is not merely our intellectual beliefs ("faith"), but the quality of our life pursuant to our beliefs, that determines our eternal state in the afterlife.

In answer to your questions:
Yes, I am a scientist and yes, I am aware of many religious scientists
No religions have convinced me at all of their 'Truth'
I do not believe in an afterlife (I actually don't 'believe' in anything)

3 hours later…
3:43 PM
@Atheist What branch of science? What work do you do?
@Atheist Do you have any interest in any religion convincing you of its truth?
@Atheist I presume you mean you don't believe in anything that is usually called "spiritual": God, heaven, hell, angels, spirits, and so on. Being a scientist, I presume you do believe in such things as scientific method and its efficacy in sleuthing out the nature of reality. Not everyone does believe that.
And I suspect you believe that there actually is a physical universe out there as material reality--that it is not purely a mental construct, as philosophical idealists believe.

Q: Did Jesus use Cannibis on his followers?

RedRiderXIn pro-cannabis circles, it's often purported that Jesus used Cannabis-based anointing oil to heal/treat/perform miracles. As far as I can tell the logic is this: Jesus anointed his followers and the sick with oil Exodus 30:22 is used as proof that traditional Anointing Oil used Hemp ("Fragran...

@WasthereeveranElisha? I wonder what Jesus used to resurrect people. Especially one stuck behind a big chunk of stone.

@WasthereeveranElisha? @RedRiderX You freaky devil, you! :-D
@El'endiaStarman Hemp oil is a great "lubricant" to get them stones rollin' ya know! ;-)

You caught me!

@LeeWoofenden a lot of assumptions about my beliefs - so far, all incorrect
I am a physicist by the way
and I don't 'believe' in anything

3:55 PM
Do you believe in test results you haven't replicated yourself?
Do you believe in the accuracy of the scientific method?

@Atheist So you don't believe in scientific method?

It's a nitpick I know, but everyone believes in something

@Atheist And you don't believe that the universe is actually out there, and not a construct of the human mind?

@LeeWoofenden no, because it is not a belief system

@LeeWoofenden We have the same talking points :P

3:58 PM
@RedRiderX no, not everyone

@Atheist A lack of belief system is not synonymous with having no beliefs at all.

@LeeWoofenden the evidence suggets that there is a universe 'out there'

@Atheist Sounds like a belief system to me. It's got principles by which you conduct your activities pursuant to a goal. And it's not something you can actually observe with your eyes. Scientific method is a construct of the human mind: something we came up with as a way of proceeding and investigating the universe.

@Atheist I think you're gonna have to define "belief system" because I personally think everyone has to have a belief system that helps them understand the world and ideas they come across.

well, you guys seem to know me better than I know me, congratulations

4:00 PM
How else do you take a claim and evaluate whether it's true or false (or somewhere in between)?

@Atheist I could say the same about God. There's gobs of evidence for God. It's really just a matter of which evidence you accept. You've decided to accept physical evidence as trustworthy. Not everyone does. Some people believe that the evidence of mental experience is more trustworthy than that of the physical senses. How can you be sure they're wrong and you're right? It's really a matter of belief.

you'll never get me to 'believe' in your god

@Atheist It's just that I've heard a lot of atheists say they don't believe anything. And I think such an idea can't stand actual scrutiny. The idea that you don't believe anything is more of a belief than some sort of objective reality. It's a way that you picture the working of your own mind. But I find it unconvincing.
2

@Atheist I don't think anyone here is trying to do that.

why scrutinise, why not accept Atheists as they are

4:02 PM
@Atheist Who said anything about getting you to believe in God? I didn't. If you don't want to believe in God, that's certainly your choice. But the idea that you don't believe anything is not objectively sustainable.

@LeeWoofenden luckily I am not obliged to convince you
@LeeWoofenden if you say so

@Atheist Atheists generally fault theists for uncritically believing things that they (atheists) think are not true, or think there's no evidence for. But I would say that atheists do the same thing when they assert the reality of the physical universe as being objectively out there when that really isn't provable at all.
@Atheist Nor am I obliged to convince you. Even for religious reasons. Unlike many believers, I believe that you, an atheist, can go to heaven even if you remain an atheist to your dying day. So I have no particular religious compulsion to get you to believe in God. You're free to believe or not believe what you want.

@LeeWoofenden I am happy Theists have their beliefs - more than happy that they have found peace and what-not. I have found my peace in my own way.
and for the record, I work for a Church run organisation

@Atheist And that's fine. As I say, I have no particular need to "convert" you. My belief is that those who live a reasonably moral life pursuant to some principles that prompt them to treat their fellow human beings with decency and respect, and make some useful contribution to human society, will find their place in heaven rather than hell after death.

I do cancer research - mostly for free

4:08 PM
@Atheist That's a good and worthy line of work.
@RedRiderX Good to see you delurking, btw. :-)
I'm heading out soon.

the Church I work for just lets me get on with the work - they don't interfere

@Atheist That's good, too.

I also help with other duties when I get time or when I am able to

I'm more of a "by their fruits you will know them" sort of guy.

most people cringe when they see me
burn scars on the face and a prosthetic arm

4:26 PM
Judgy people can suck, and sometimes people have automatic reactions that are cruel.
I think everyone could use some more empathy in their life.

6 hours later…
10:05 PM
I've heard somebody say that a concept of christianity is that everybody goes to hell except there's a loophole that if you believe in jesus's resurrection, then you go to heaven. Is that correct?

10:25 PM
@barlop Depends who you ask. If you ask me, I'll say, "No, that's not correct."
@Atheist Sorry to hear it. That certainly does make life more difficult.

10:45 PM
@RedRiderX Yeah, I really hate judgy people. They're just plain terrible human beings! :-P

10:58 PM
@LeeWoofenden only if I let it be that way
@RedRiderX true, however, a motto I follow is 'what other people think of me is none of my business'

11:55 PM
@LeeWoofenden ok but why is it not correct?
@Atheist you should think things through rather than having mottos. Sometimes what other people think of you can matter, especially when building relationships with people and relationships with people can matter. I'm not saying it always matters, but it can matter sometimes.
