6:14 PM
Sometimes I feel I should make my own clone of DnD. I like the basic concept of tactical combat and exploration in a fantasy world, but DnD is rather cumbersome and isn't really good at representing all the tropes of heroic fantasy adventuring.
Then again, a lot of sorrowful tales start with "I should make my own clone of DnD"...

@kviiri A lot of good products start that way too

Wohoo, good evening!

howdy @Anaphory

@GreySage I think the good ones start like “I should make a clone of D&D, but based on game(s) X, Y and Z which I also know”. But then I'm not a D&D fan to start with, so mixing something else in and giving a tight focus tends to be an improvement in my eyes…
@kviiri What other games in that direction have you looked at and found insufficient?

I'm by no means a DnD fan either, but the game tickles me right in some ways. I found myself surprisingly fond of DnD 5e after I accepted it as a combat-heavy action packed romp instead of trying to force it into a too narrativist framework.
@Anaphory Dungeon World, in terms of heroic fantasy, but it lacks proper tactical combat which I'd like. Savage Worlds has tactical combat, but it tastes rotten to me in other ways.

6:25 PM
Have you had a look at Torchbearer's blurb?

Nope, what's that?

Burning Wheel/Mouse Guard for dugeon exploration. That combat might be too abstract, but it's definitely tactical.

I'm not even sure how I'd like my combat, to be honest. Tactics are fun, but it must never slog. Especially if there's a party split.
Seriously, for a game ostensibly based on works like Lord of the Rings, DnD works really poorly with party splits.

Torchbearer implicitly encourages no party splits, and while the combat-scripting takes seriously getting used to it, I use it in Mouse Guard and find it decently fast.

6:30 PM
@Anaphory I can see the reasoning behind avoiding party splits, and I'm open about disliking party splits to my parties both when GM'ing and playing. But I feel the lack of mechanical support for them is odd, given their prevalence in fantasy fiction.
LotR is basically Party Split: The Trilogy

@kviiri The problem is structural. At the end of the day, no matter what system you are using, you are a bunch of people around a table (or a digital table). Any party split necessitates that at least some of the people around the table are NOT contributing at a given time, which just isn't fun.

@GreySage I was just about to say that.

@GreySage You could set it up in a way that involves communication capabilities (sending stones?). It doesn't solve the lack of action problem, but it could alllow at least for involvement.
but yeah, party splits are generally very very very long bathroom breaks for those not active.

@NautArch Still, its the difference between playing a multiplayer videogame and watching someone else play it

@GreySage Verymuchso. Although I'm a weirdo and enjoy watching others play games.

6:35 PM
@GreySage Yeah, I know. That's basically the reasoning. Then again, DnD puts a weirdly minimal amount of effort into actually discouraging party splitting or making them work.

You could handle a party split by ending a session with it, and having two separate game days, one with each sub-party until they finally meet up, at which point you reunite.

Do published adventures keep aparites toether more, is that really more under the obligation of the DM?

@NautArch I used to watch my older brothers play all the time. I like it, but not if I expected to play myself. They are different activities
@kviiri I would expect there to be some warnings about in the DMG, but I don't think I've ever seen one

@GreySage You could always give something to the those not participating :)

@NautArch I'd definitely say its more on the GM/whoever is writing the adventure

6:37 PM
sort of a "hey, you guys want to go do something on your own? Sure - but the rest of the party gets to go shopping in the City of Brass"

@GreySage There's a lot of things that imply party splits. Spells that plane shift only one person, for instance. Good luck not party splitting when one goes ethereal :)

then hand them the DMG, give price ranges for rarity, and tell them to go nuts and browse while you run the split.

@kviiri Yeah, I always dream of using Planeshift for practical purposes, but it always ends up being a "storytelling" spell
one day...

I gave my party a bottle of Oil of Etherealness. I want to see how they use it. Maybe infiltrate some enemy stronghold...

@NautArch Eh. People come to game night to play the game. They don't come to read the DMG. Plus, if they want to rp talking to shopkeepers or just play out the interaction of buying things, they're SOL. Also, they will pick stuff that you don't want them to have.

6:41 PM
I hand-wave bulk selling if my party is just handing me a spreadsheet of their 'vendor trash'.

Probably the worst GM I had was a guy who was fairly clueless about the rules of the game but a very "traditional" guy. No exp for missing players, for instance - and if there was a party split he'd physically split us into two groups to avoid us spoiling each other on what the other half knew.

Buying important equipment and gear usually has some conversation element to it.

@kviiri We have some oil of slipperiness, and still haven't found a use for it. One dude said he was going to try to drink it, and we joked about the possible result

@MadMAxJr For me, it has to be REALLY important, plot wise, to warrant spending time shopping

Ughh. I gave up on handling missing players. We usually pull out a board game now if we're missing someone.
Also, split parties are a nightmare to manage. It still happens from time to time, but I try to minimize the scenarios that require it.

6:42 PM
Like, either the city has it or it doesn't, and it has a price on it for a reason, give me your list of buying/selling, I give you a list of yes/no and how much gold you get.

Sometimes my players want to haggle price on big items. I'll let them. If they flub it, it's back to sticker price only or get out.

@Adam Probably makes food remarkably easy to swallow.

@Adam Our barbarian rubbed it over his body before a fight. I"m not sure why, but it seemed appropriate.

@NautArch escape from grapples easier, or get swallowed easier.
That was a grammatically abominable sentence

@GreySage Yeah, it never really came up to help/hurt him - but the image of the nearly naked slippery barbarian was funny

6:47 PM
@NautArch We figured that if our rogue drank it, he would get uncontrollable diarrhea or some other such thing. I think we might end up spiking somebody's drink with it to see if it has that kind of effect.
Considering how much the DM laughed at that assessment, I think it has a good shot of working

Our party's "general store" is actually a department of the local Heroes' Guild. As such they often get freebies related to their quest at hand... silver weapon against lycanthropes, or wands and potions for extra firepower and staying power.
Now that they're being pestered by a Night Hag, they'll need to ask for something to ward it off.
The Night Hag is something different and new for me: it's an open background quest that keeps pestering the party during their other jobs until they decide to get rid of it.
Luckily their boss/questmaster is familiar with Night Hags (and even this particular individual) so quality exposition can be provided.

7:10 PM
hey there @NautArch @Papayaman1000 @GreySage

hey @Shalvenay

how're things going?

howdy @Shalvenay

what's up?

one last meeting and im outta here!

7:11 PM
mkay. I gave up on variables and just used more HTML documents.

@NautArch xD how's your availability for tonight look?

@Shalvenay i'm not positive - i'll know more after the kids go to sleep and whether or not the wife wants to stay up and watch a movie

@NautArch alrighty then

@Shalvenay What's up?

@kviiri not a whole lot, as for you?

7:22 PM
@Shalvenay Finished my round-robin campaign in a stretched session that got quite bogged down in memery near the final boss fight. And the final boss rolled very poorly too!

i'm sorry :(

It's ok ^^ everyone had a good time except for me I guess, and I had had a terrible day to the point I felt reluctant to even GM.

@kviiri awww. I've been playtesting a dungeon myself as of late

I had received a whaddyacallit letter that you have to pick up at the post office to confirm you received it... from a large law office. I couldn't pick it up that day nor yesterday because Ascension Thursday is a public holiday.
I was spooked that I was being targeted for some legal action and the stress was with me for the whole session. (It turned out to concern only a merger of a company I own shares of)

@kviiri whew!
hey there @Khashir

7:27 PM
hey there @Shalvenay!
How's it going?

@Shalvenay Oh, had I shuffled that far down the activity line? Eyup!

I'm glad to get to play again. Kihna the Bard can resume bass-flicking at level 5.

how're things going?
and hey there @Anaphory, how're things going on your end as well?
@kviiri yeah -- I should find a campaign for which my Orc from New Orleans would be suitable

good, thanks :-). taking a quick break from work to check out the Wells of Knowledge 8-)

@Shalvenay Did you solve your legal conundrum? :)

7:28 PM
Very good, appropriate levels of busy.

@kviiri not yet, it's on the back burner while I figure out a bunch of background pieces about how the elven legal system works

I'm waiting for one more re-open vote for my question, or feedback about how to improve it, to get it re-opened:
https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/100133/how-can-i-compare-the-damage-gain-between-bless-and-faerie-fire?noredirect=1#comment237619_100133
esp. now that another user commented that they seem to have an answer

@Khashir It looks like you made it purely about 1d4 vs adv? Is that right?

yes, 1d4 to-hit

reopened

7:30 PM
though have to consider that Advantage is conditional on enemy not saving (while 1d4 req no save)
and adv increases crit chance
sweet, thanks @Shalvenay :)
@NautArch: but the vanilla case (no crit, no save) can be a fruitful starting point.
does anyone know of a table with MM stat blocks/defences? I vaguely recall someone doing this analysis a long time ago, but haven't found it
with that, it should be fairly trivial to get a birds-eye view of defences across levels, and then make more accurate estimates
(and I'd be happy to add that info to the question)
Something like this, but with defences:
https://donjon.bin.sh/5e/monsters/

The DnD 5e concentration system makes it rather hard to focus on being a support mage... most buffs/debuffs require concentration.
But oh boy, Plant Growth seems awesome. That'll be my first pick for L3 spell.

7:46 PM
@kviiri yeah, but there are a few gems: with a few bard levels, you get inspiration/cutting words, which don't req concentration; blindness doesn't req conc; neither does command (which can be quickened to trade your bonus action for the enemy's action + debuff)
but.I have to say, Plant Growth seems pretty amazing—great catch!
not to mention Mass Suggestion <3

FIREBALL!
sorry
Tidal Wave, too

8:27 PM
@Khashir Indeed, Inspiration dice are my main support tool.
I like Bane too, even if it's one of the more boring spells in a sense. And heroism rocks too, at lower levels in particular. Our Bear totem Barbarian gets really impressive staying power from it.
Playing a caster in 5e is weird... levels 1 and 2 are very limited in terms of slots and from level 3 onward they're just plentiful.

8:43 PM
@kviiri I have the opposite experience. I'm always starving for more spell slots
Yeah, cantrips help a bit, but they just don't get the job done as well

@Adam More is always more, but I haven't felt really starved after level 2. I run out occasionally, but I don't feel I run out too soon... if you get what I mean.

@kviiri I get what you mean, but I haven't had that experience. Heck, at level 5 I hardly have enough slots to get through the whole day it seems

The two or three slots at the first two levels leave no room for frivolous spellcasting at all.
@Adam Yeah, might depend heavily on the group. We usually have reasonably short adventuring days... even though I tried making longer days for my sub-campaign.
I like Vicious Mockery too, even if the damage output is shoddy. The attack disadvantage strengthens my idea of my character being an enabler for the rest of the party.

My group has two casters, me (a cleric) and a wizard. The wizard blows through all his spells as quickly as he can, without fail. I try to save mine. Between the two of us, it averages out to a reasonable amount of spells used per encounter. Though if it was just him, we would probably clear two rooms in a dungeon before he ran out.

Heh, fast-fire wizard! We have one of those two.
I'm our party's sole healer for the next sub-campaign, since our Paladin's player is mastering. I need to be a bit more careful about when to use my slots.
Especially since we're also one high-AC tank short too!

9:00 PM
Very easy to do, ask yourself one simple question: is a teammate unconscious?
- Yes: Cast Healing Word
- No: Don't do anything that involves healing people
Really things only deviate from that formula when you start getting into mass heals
Creature damage usually outstrips healing potential: meaning that a creature will do more damage faster than you can heal it all back up (Unless you use some really powerful spells). So, usually the best way to minimize the damage your party will take, is just crush your enemies before they have a chance to crush you

I mostly do healing between the combats when there's no time to pull a short rest.
But what you say is essentially true in many respects... the important bit being how much one can accelerate the offending creature's demise.
A well-timed shatter or thunderwave is often decisive, I've found. Especially against low-HP high-AC opponents. Hobgoblins beware!

hey there @nitsua60

1 hour later…
10:21 PM
@nitsua60 Yup, already dodged that.

10:35 PM
re: split parties. It's a lot less of a problem if you're using a low-impact system where actions get resolved quickly and easily.
My parties split up all the time in Fate, Lady Blackbird, Great Ork Gods, etc. Mostly we just keep the same "go around the table and ask each person what they're doing now" structure; nothing says you have to group everybody's action resolution order by in-game location.

10:54 PM
@BESW I respect your decision and I definitely think you're a valuable member of the community as you are, like you wrote there.

@kviiri bane is fun, but I've found bless to be more helpful

11:22 PM
@kviiri sweet. yes, bane is cool; too bad we don't get its counterpart (bless), which is even better

11:35 PM
@Khashir why not if I may ask?

WotC is hosting a Stream of Annihilation on June 2nd and 3rd 10am-10pm both days. Short summary by Tycho.
