@Erik Not really a pun, but a few sessions ago, my party went into a cave where we found a rack of crossbows and bolts by the entrance, a yellow line on the ground throught the cave, and the whole place was infested with mantis-men. We later learned that the cave was named "Cave Johnson" by the locals

Okay
So
The crux of the discussion

:36922869 The quote treads on my definition of "joke" =)

I look away from chat for a few minutes and suddenly a bunch of removed posts. Hmm.

@Karelzarath It's a quantum-thing.

8:02 PM
@nitsua60 That's not much solace.

@nitsua60 football supporters come to mind.

Please consider casting some votes in the primary phase of RPGSE's election. Short nominee statements can be found on that page, and longer statements are here. Theory of Stack: the more eyes, the better the results.

Also the story about the bookwyrm is hilarious. It makes me sad that I don't usually run games in English :(

@SevenSidedDie can you pin that ^^, or does it need to be BESW?

@nitsua60 @SevenSidedDie which page are we casting votes on?

8:06 PM
@NautArch I linked it just-above. It's the second tab (primary) of the election page.

@NautArch The election page itself: rpg.stackexchange.com/election?cb=1

You should have a message about it

Long ago there was a wizard who became so powerful she began to feed off the magic of the world. Some worshipped her like a God, she began to allow those who followed her the closest into her magic(Gonna have to write that better, but the jist is there), after some time, she and her disciples became the rulers of the world.
She got more and more powerful and eventually so many people were worshipping her that the Gods' power began to diminish, in an effort to regain their followers the Gods enlisted the heroes of the Adventurer's Guild to trap her in the center of the world. With the help of the Engineers and the Guild, a Vault was created and she was sealed in the middle of the world.

@nitsua60 @A_S00 Thank you!I had been reading the responses, but wasn't sure if the votes go on the questionnaire or on the other page. Much obliged, and good luck to those in the DeathRace.

@nitsua60 Can we only vote on one?

8:16 PM
question for the 3.5 players: what's a good combat-tankish class that's tier 3-4? (dm has asked us nicely to not play tier 1-2 classes)

On each candidate you can cast up/down/no vote.

level 6

Question: if power = faith then wouldn't sealing her away and then the decline of her worship over time mean that the wizard would lose power? And then possibly become mortal again?

For the primary, you can up or downvote every user. It's just to get an idea of who goes to the final election.

@Skathix for the primary, it's just regular stack-style upvote/downvote; the main election will be a different format

8:16 PM
It's like a response-dial.

@DForck42 Crusader!

IN the final, I think you can vote for 3 people, in order of "most" to "least"

@DForck42 Which tier list are you using?

@DForck42 if you want to get fancy, crusader/incarnate

@Yuuki he hasn't specified

8:17 PM
@Yuuki Her power didn't come from faith but from sapping the magic from the world, the Gods' power comes from faith

so i'll probably ask him if a class/combination is ok before I start building it

Q: There's an election going on. What's happening and how does it work?

ben is uǝq backwardsThe community bulletin says that there is a moderator election occurring. How does the election work and how can I get involved? Return to FAQ index

@Yuuki maybe not growing in strength, but the remaining followers may continue doing so.

@Skathix @Erik ^^

@nitsua60 You know I gotchu, how many times have you saved my butt?
Lots.

8:20 PM
@Skathix Really? Glad to hear it--sorry I don't remember it =\

Nbd, I haven't been active in probably a year or more
But I'm back, and starting a new campaign
So @Adam @eimyr @Yuuki @KorvinStarmast, any glaring holes in that so far?
You guys have been phenominal

@Skathix Cool! Good luck. I always enjoy/hate the start of a new campaign. So much potential, so many ideas, so hard to start narrowing things down. There's something about playing with the potential campaign that's so alluring, so self-indulgent, that seems hard to give up by "letting players in."

Random tangent: if she was sapping magic from the world, how does that affect magical creatures and nature-based magic (druids and rangers)?

@Skathix I can dig it.

But that might be getting too into the weeds.

8:24 PM
@Yuuki That's actually the thing with her disciples, she began sapping magic and she and her disciples became the only ones who could wield it
Which answers the whole "Why would people revolt against her"
Some people (Like the Guild) didn't like that she had an imbalance of power and she eventually became a tyrant

If she has/had all the magic in the world, how would they seal her? Assuming that one needs magic (and powerful magic at that) to do so.

@Yuuki Ran a campaign a while back that was predicated on the idea that it was previous to the big "discoveries" in magic, so we-all pared down the class list. No clerics or paladins, just druids and rangers. No wizards or EK or AT, just WM sorcerers and warlocks.

sorry, I've been off the chat for and hour and a bit

@nitsua60 Don't clerics get their spells from their deities?

@Yuuki This feels like the part where the Gods intervened and blessed 7 heroes with magic

8:25 PM
So wouldn't it just be no wizards and no-wizardlikes?

@Yuuki What deities? (They hadn't coalesced out of believers yet!)

Because she became godlike, not ubergod
So several gods teamed up against her, blessed heroes, and together they took her down
... Does that work?

@nitsua60 Then how do Warlocks work? Aren't their patrons typically quasi-deities?

-timid-

@Yuuki nobody knows =)

8:27 PM
Also, where do bards get their magic?

@nitsua60 #writered

@Yuuki from the magic that created existance

Basically, as a group we sat down and said "let's pare down the class and race lists" and went around the tbale saying "I like this, let's ditch that," until enough of a theme emerged for a story to reveal itself.

@Yuuki Friendship Is Magic.

@Yuuki Please don't get me started on bards. I'm running for office, after all =D

8:28 PM
@Yuuki Music, harmony, all that kind of stuff.

@nitsua60 neat

(There weren't bards, either. I just forgot about them now. As I generally do.)

@nitsua60 I feel the same way about Clerics and Druids, Idk why I just don't like them
I allow them and all that but I just find it hard to get excited about them as classes
I tend to like bards because I'm an extrovert and most of the time whoever plays them at my tables have played them really well as the face

So we ended up with Humans, Half-Orcs, and Goliaths; Barbarians, Druids, Fighters (no EK), Rangers, Rogues (no AT), WM Sorcerers, and Warlocks.

@Skathix I love clerics so much. Though I find it incredibly frustrating to role play as a cleric

8:30 PM
Gotta run, all. Vote early, vote often!

@nitsua60 I voted

I find Clerics easier to play when remembering they were chosen by- but didn't necessarily choose- their god. You don't need to play a religious zealot.

I don't understand the dislike for Bards. Mechanically they were crap in 3.5e, but the flavor for them is just amazing.

@CTWind I once played a paladin of love that made a deal with the goddess of love after he was beaten nearly to death after he got caught sleeping with the head of the merchant's guild's wife

@Erik I feel exactly the opposite. They're amazing mechanically (though admittedly only with splatbook support), but I have trouble taking them seriously
@Erik like there are bard archetypes that I like in fiction
@Erik but the 3.5-style "you must actually be singing in combat" thing is rough
@Erik I want my bards more like Kvothe, who's smart enough not to bring his instruments to a fight

8:34 PM
I LOVE my bard. Just sayin'.

I prefer to think of Bards like Shakespeare
I mean, the guitarists are great, but I think of them like storytellers

@Erik I dunno how, but our 3.5 bard gives us an additional 7d6 of damage when we hit, so I can't scoff at that

@A_S00 My bard also didn't want to fight with instruments, which is why one of his first purchases was a component pouch.

5e Bards don't need to really sing or make music anymore, unless you want them to.

They don't?

8:36 PM
@diego how does that help?

Are they required to do anything? Or do they just show the Bard Card and get benefits?

@MadMAxJr only for counter charm, leadership, and song of rest

According to the SRD: "You can inspire others through stirring words or music.", and during downtime

"Stop bleeding. You are now inspired."

But you can use oration as well, so storytellers are fine.

8:37 PM
Yeah, bards are just supposed to be overly inspiring wordsmiths

@MadMAxJr that's more the Warlord from 4e. Who, incidentally, is one of the most badass classes for that very reason.

I want a 5E bard who filibusters in the field.

I play mine in what I guess is 3.5 style. But that's really just because he got the Cli Lyre pretty early on and wanted to use it. I just didn't like the idea of holding the instrument to get it's effects. And those effects are powerful enough for me to build the character around it. That, and we always built the original party as a glam rock band.

@Skathix Works well enough, so far, as the outline/basis for your themes.
@nitsua I like bards due to them being a nice multiclass in one class. 8^P

someone on reddit just told me "thanking isn't really a thing in DnD"

8:40 PM
Think about it like the Maori haka or other war dances.

umm... what?

They do it to both psych themselves and their allies up and strike fear into their opponents.

@DForck42 thanking or flanking?

@Yuuki This is one of the bard archetypes I like, but you don't do a haka while you're fighting.
I want my bard to do a haka beforehand to psych up their allies, or compose an epic saga about the battle after the fact, or sing songs to memorialize fallen allies in the tavern later
but actually performing in combat feels super silly

@NautArch tanking
*typo

8:43 PM
@DForck42 the barbarian in my group with 25 AC thinks differently :D

@DForck42 it's kind of true in that there's basically no aggro mechanic
@DForck42 you can make yourself really hard to kill, but then stuff can just ignore you at the DM's whim

@CTWind I wish more people would play them that way. I find Clerics easier to play when remembering they were chosen by- but didn't necessarily choose- their god. You don't need to play a religious zealot That's how the successor to Korvin was built, for a backstory.

@DForck42 the two close options are "beefy frontliner who also does lots of damage" or "area control frontliner focusing on tripping via attacks of opportunity"

@A_S00 Ah, now I see the difference. There are spells/abilities that give a come to me and me only, but that's pretty limiting.

(in 3.5 at least)

8:44 PM
@NautArch my dwarf had 23 (24 against dodge person, 27 when moving against AoO, and 28 if the AoO came from dodge person)

Oath of the Crown helps to pseudo-aggro by restricting enemy movement.

@A_S00 But the DM should really only stop trying to hit the big guy if they're smart enough to realize he's just that good and not just lucky.

@NautArch They've been adding more of those through unearthed arcana and such things, but for the longest time I think it was only the compelled duel spell that did something like that

@DForck42 dayum. How'd he do that? Or is that not in 5e?

@A_S00 i'll have to post my dwarf, cause that's not quite true. basically, he'd post himself in the middle of combat, and smack anything that tried to move.
@NautArch 3.5

8:46 PM
@Adam Yeah, and as a whole, Compelled Duel just isn't worth it.

@DForck42 sounds like the AoO area control archetype I mentioned above? Or was it different?

@A_S00 I didn't trip though, I had stand still that would reduce their movement to 0

@DForck42 yeah that works too

speaking of tanky/shutdown stuff...how do y'all play Sentinel? Do they get their attack when an enemy attack is announced or after it's been rolled?

@A_S00 Because instruments and component pouches both work for the same thing

8:52 PM
@NautArch There was a question asking that on the main site just the other day, actually
@NautArch I answered that you get your reaction attack after theirs has been resolved, because the timing is unclear. And the DMG says that if the timing isn't clear, then you should assume that, like with the ready action, the reaction takes place after the trigger resolves

@Adam and you answered! hehe. I think you answered that after I had searched for info on it.
I had found this online: storify.com/Rolls4Damage/…
@Adam Your response is Crawford's, so is RAW. But Mearls' intent makes a lot of sense. Kind of funny for a sentinel to say "oh, look - a friend being attacked. I'll just wait for that to finish..."

@diego <- is still confused :\

I think my table is going with Mearls' reasoning. But DM hasn't made a vocal decision yet. We went with that style during play, but was going to look it up after.

I mean, I put the raw out there up front because that's what most people expect to get. I did also say that it's pretty much DM judgment.

When you put it that way though, I probably would let it happen before the attack in game just because that does seem rather silly that you would wait to let your friend get pummeled

I posted that link to him, but no feedabck yet.

8:56 PM
@NautArch I think it's more "my friend was just attacked, they left a spot in their defense open"

@Adam Agreed - but Crawford was pretty clear in his response :) RAW is definitely after the attack is resolved.
@DForck42 hmnmm, hadn't thought of it like that. It doesn't totally jive with my head canon of a sentinel, but it's not bad logic.
I mean, you're not very effective at being a sentinel and protecting your allies if you let the enemy get their attack first.

@A_S00 In 5e, bards can use instruments as spellcasting foci. A spellcasting focus lets you ignore non-costly, non-consumed material components when you cast spells. A component pouch does the same thing.

@Adam You should also probably add that tweet into your response :D

@Adam oooohhh I get it, I thought it was about replacing an instrument for using Bardic Music in combat and I was like "how do you use a component pouch for that"

Actually, a component pouch is a bit better because it lets you ignore material components that are consumed as long as they don't have a cost. Spellcasting foci cannot substitute for consumed material components at all

8:58 PM
@NautArch shrugs should have been written slightly different then
I think in older versions you could disrupt the attack

@DForck42 not disagreeing. But Mearls' intent is clear. It's just not Crawford's intent.

I wish JC could stamp this onto all of his tweets

@Adam yup, that's the one. It's a really nice xchange all the way through - and the site i linked that housed/sent it treats it really intelligently.

people are paralyzed without his words

the problem is when they said his sage advice tweets were "official"

9:01 PM
Yes, I got it from your links. I'll add it in when I have time, though you can include that as your own answer if you would like. I'd upvote it

@A_S00 Surely if you have bat guano and wood from a tree struck by lightning, you can have a grass whistle?

@Adam I thought about that, but you've got a good answer there and I don't think it makes sense for me to add another. And I feel weird about basically copying you and the site that I found and taking credit for it.

And I feel weird taking a tweet that you found and adding it to my answer :p

I feel a lot of love in this room. 8^D

@Adam It's a nice sentiment, but nobody owns citations or gets first dibs. :) More important to improve the post when possible than to avoid it our of excessive courtesy.

9:20 PM
@Adam I'll try and do it tonight after kids are in bed, but feel free to beat me to it.

10:05 PM
@doppelgreener I really like your nomination post. They're the sort of answers I'd hope to see from someone who I'd trust to be a healthy moderator with a good relationship.

user61230
The reason I'm not leaving this as a comment is because I wanted to pass you my two cents on a more personal note.

user61230
You say "I'd still like to have good friendships with the people on here and in chat, and allow people to feel relaxed around me." This is very much possible; friendships don't go away. But they might change a bit, and that's extremely difficult to avoid. And it might be harder to make new ones.

user61230
If you become a moderator, which my Professional Analysis considers pretty likely, it's just something to be aware of. It doesn't hardly spell the end of anything, but it's not a completely neutral zone, either.

So anyone ever hear the critical hit podcast?

user61230
I think the best thing I've done, personally, has been to never handle flags on posts of someone whom I know personally/am good friends with. But, that works for me, it's ultimately a stylistic choice. I'm confident in your ability to find what works for you.

user61230
10:17 PM
@Skathix (Sorry, didn't mean to talk over you!)

Nah dude you're being awesome, do your thing

@SevenSidedDie And sarcasm is weaponised.

I literally came to complain about that podcast making d&d sound dull and see if anyone would tell me to give it more of a chance
But daaaaaaaaaaaaaaang is it boring

There are a lot of boring D&D/Pathfinder podcasts, I've found.

That seems difficult lol, I've never been bored playing but good God man
The thing I'm confused by is the number of fans it seems to have
But whatever, to each their own

10:20 PM
Mmm, a lot of the engagement in high-complexity engines like D&D usually comes from system interaction--which is a lot harder to engage with as a third-party observer.

I'm caught up on botched and harmontown
Any recommendations?

Most of these seem kinda meh. Although Halflings can get the ability to give allies the effects of Lucky on reaction.

Op XD

Humans can get advantage on any roll once per short rest.
Might make for some interesting tactics with rogues?
Oh god, the spacing on WotC's 5e PDFs is terrible.
> Whenever you have advantage on an attack roll, you can reroll one of the dice once.
Never mind, edit history doesn't show bad spacing.

@Emrakul thanks very much for the advice

10:29 PM
@Yuuki what did you think about the feats for skills

@Skathix I've honestly not been looking through feats in-depth.
I just took a cursory glance at the racial ones, I'm sure some of them are amazing.
IIRC, Stealthy seemed pretty good though.
And Acrobat depends on whether your DM throws terrain features at you.
But I feel like it's more rooted in the grid-and-mini playstyle of 3.5e.

hey there @Yuuki

'ello

how're things going?

Pretty good, putting some final touches on my rogue before I get to spin the shiny wheels tomorrow.
How about you?

10:47 PM
alright here

11:06 PM
hey there @ShadowKras and @NautArch

Hey @Shalvenay

how're things going?
