4:05 PM
lol thats crazy
@waxeagle it does seem a bit presumptive

@JoshuaAslanSmith very

yeah I get you wanna make money off the 5e bonanza but honestly not waiting for the complete rules with DMG seems like a mistake
going to be very low quality or very much not in step with how the edition turns out

despite a good track record overall from the company, and a decent stable of creators, I'm not overly optimistic (though I think the wife is tracking it for potential B-day presents for me)

I'm generally down on big-book-o-spells et al these days anyway. Not sure if that is because they tend to be very samey or if (these days) I'm just too keyed into games with generic mechanics and an emphasis on Making It Up Yourself. The most fun I've had recently has been with DramaSystem.

@joshuaaslansmith they could have inside info, and the book is advertised for november

4:20 PM
@GMNoob The Kickstarter page says: Not all of the game’s rules are known to us at this time, and probably a couple of them are still being finalized in the Crystal Towers of Renton. The terms of the licensing aren't nailed down either.
So inside information seems unlikely. Unless they are lying, which would open a whole new can of worms.

They've got a couple of WOTC contractors in the project (Greenwood and Winter), but yeah, they don't have any insight into the mechanics probably (Winter might have a bit more than Greenwood as he co-wrote Tyranny)

Mike mearls says he doesn't know all the rules either because they are not finalized

@Quentin yeah no, even if I go in on this I won't be buying the spell book, no interest. The adventures would be why I go in

Doesn't mean they don't have am NDA agreement
Switching to laptop

@GMNoob That means they can maybe make final changes after the MM comes out, but that's still at or right before the DMG release which is whats going to have the most insight into how to design monsters/write adventures/craft spells.
That said, if they get advanced copies of those volumes (very possible), they could do a good job. I'm just thinking they are jumping the gun still

4:26 PM
Unless mearls reveals it in a L&L article like today :-P

@GMNoob lol yeah
(I guess we'll get a good bit of insight into monster design (at least from a reverse engineer POV), when the PHB comes out and we get some added to basic)

Or not...
At first ibthougjt the books.would.be useless then I realized the target audience is old camera
Gamers

I think it depends on what you want out of your game.
I think the first book on anyone's list should be the PHB, give your players a lot of options. Then the MM give yourself more monsters to fight, with the DMG potentially being purely optional
but I think most people who are going to play long term will likely buy the DMG too simply for completeness, but also to accsess options that they hear about, but don't see in basic

Wait, we aren't talking about the necromacerd kickstaeter?
I need the dmg for my emergent class concept

4:42 PM
oh you mean the KS books being useless?
I kind of want the adventures
but I don't want the spell books and could take or leave the monsters (probably buy the monsters if I go in)
but honestly, I'd rather spend $40 on this: amazon.com/dp/0786964618/…

lol
I mean any 3rd party published materials are going to get purchased post core books I cant see any other way to do it
also, if morningstar is the success I hope it to be whether or not I can use custom content in it is a big question?

@JoshuaAslanSmith very good point

Any future module I buy must have suggested bonds

@GMNoob definitely. that's an important element for dealing with the inspiration subsystem

I don't trust modules that don't see the DMG at this point. But if you want oldschool they have all the info you need.
What do.we know.about.mormingstar? My table won't be buying tablets

4:48 PM
It should run on phones
Tablet will just be easier to see/read
or are you asking if a laptop is doable?

My table won't buy tablets cause we are old poor people :-)

Buying a tablet just to use morningstar would be silly anyways

More curious if only the dm I.e me, can use it if the rest of the table doesn't

I want to get a tablet eventually because Ive found myself wanting/needing a moblie computer but I dont need a laptop

Also.if.its one time purchase or sub

4:50 PM
@GMNoob I think so?
@GMNoob yeah that we don't know :(

we shall find out, hope to get into that beta
cant wait for invite signups to go live

lol was just about to say looks like there was a post thursday
@GMNoob "web users" and browser support basically means itll run on just about any PC
lol grad degrees in medieval english lit and astrophysics, not a lot of crossover there

Or is there.. dindin dun
I'm really hating how this site works when internet is wonky :-)
Should I post articles on dampd that people link to elsewhere?

4:58 PM
@GMNoob only if you have something interesting to say. Analysis > simple linkage

It made sense before my phone intercepted my typing

gotcha. This is a great site to model on bleachernation.com (obviously completely different subject area). But this guy does do aggregation, but only when he can provide analysis, quotation etc. He also writes a lot of heady articles etc
but that's the kind of thing we can offer if we work at it (that site is his FT job though, so I have no hopes of getting to his level of quality)

Hmm I think Ill write a quick article for Dungeons Amp Dragons about my initial thoughts on the basic classes
basically rogue seemed pretty underwhelming
because you can get thieves tool proficency via criminal background

@JoshuaAslanSmith yes. I'm thinking an in depth build out of each might be an interesting discussion.

5:02 PM
theres no reason to play a thieif
wanna do a split/shared article?

@JoshuaAslanSmith not sure what my schedule looks like, you wanna intro it and we each take 2 classes?

yeah sounds good
preference?
I loves me some martial classes

Sniff, leave one for me :-P

(basically, build one character to 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20) examining options

5:03 PM
@GMNoob sure

Rogue gets huge skill buffs

How about I take fighter

I'll take the rogue?

You have to look at all three pillars

lets just each do one and then we can figure out the 4th class latter

5:04 PM
sounds good
(honestly, the cleric has the fewest choices to make, let's skip it for now)

@GMNoob no but thats what Im saying, bounded system, dex based fighter with criminal background should be more than good enough

though the rogue doesn't have many choices either tbh

I'd only want to do cleric after.the phb

@GMNoob makes sense. Someone can do an initial write up about it, but the full spell list will mean a lot more to them

@GMNoob so I'll write in the intro that with 1 path, cleric is being left out because its paint by numbers?

5:06 PM
I'd want to leave it out because domains change the class drastically
Rogue gets +7 to first level skill checks

that was my thought to
@GMNoob right, but does that matter terribly? Should the rogue be bad at combat because he is a skill monkey?

Hmm, fighters have tons of options
Rogue is not bad at combat they are good at avoiding combat

right but does that in anyway help the party?

Which can be the most effective option
Yes, it allows them.to get past the guards and open/close the blocking gate

anyway are you good to do wizard then GMNoob
how do they get past the guards?

5:10 PM
Dodge and dash

you must have cover or be obscured somehow to make a stealth check, if you move, attack, or make noise your loose stealth/hidden

oh Yeah, hiding makes it easier :-)
Move does not cause yoi to lose hidden
This is a tough conversation on my Phone :-)
I'd prefer fighter to.wizard
I like the flexibiltu of.fighter without reading 100 spells :-)

I can take the wizard

Oh, fighter or.rogue is fine for me

@GMNoob you get the rogue

5:15 PM
cool
alright I'll work on the intro then get into the class work on fighter

K. I'll try to spend some time on his wizardlyness this evening

are we trying to show why its broken or how to best use.it?
Or show the useful options?

@GMNoob if you find brokenness don't shy from it, but usefulness I think is what we're looking at here
we want to know "how effective is this class"
level snapshots every 5 or so levels would be excellent
I don't know if we've seen enough monsters to judge combat efficacy though

there are 4 from the starter in the wild so we can use those as our spherical cows
(at least at low levels)

5:26 PM
oh previewed in legends and lore/

yeah those 3, and there is a hobgoblin floating around as well
all 3 of those are CR2 though :(

We have xp tables

doesn't help to determine hit rates, damage rates etc

And cr2 is good for level 20 if you have x of them
Ah, right

Can a L2 character solo a CR2 monster?

5:30 PM
No

A L4 should be able to though

Well, depends actualy

(based on the XP table)

If the cr2 monster is less than 100xp

CR2 is 450

5:31 PM
Yeah level 4 should have little problem

(unless monsters with the same CR have different XP rating?)

Mearls said not on Twitter but.inthink.he is wrong:-)

@GMNoob k, won't know till we see at least the starter, and more likely the basic monster set.

I.e. he said all cr2.have 450xp, but I'm hoping he misremembered

Here's a thought. Let's pit our PCs against that Ogre.

5:33 PM
K
All 3 of.them? Or solo?

@GMNoob solo, vacuum like

k, but I'm going to be focusing on an environment for.the rogue
Bit ogre cave works well

@GMNoob definitely, that's where their skills are. But we need to know how they do in combat

Ogre in a cave eating a snack while on a pile of loot

lol
The rogue definitely prefers having friends, though if it can stay out of sight it can avoid getting hit and attack with SA every turn

5:36 PM
can ogres say 'fe fi fo fum'?

(definitely going to go out of my way to provide rogues in my party with obstacles they can hide behind)
@GMNoob definitely
@JoshuaAslanSmith and @GMNoob we should also make sure we investigage how each race and subrace interacts with each class

Woodelf rogue in mist is scary
So my goal is to make.the best rogue I can, and also show other less optimal options?
Or just to make the best?

Examine the opportunity cost and explain why you make the choices you do
So for instance, when you pick your race, talk about what the other options were, what the strong options are for the rogue and why you choose the one you do

Point buy, standard array or roll?

point buy or standard
rolling is too random for analysis

5:45 PM
also,.the rules say to pick.things in order should we do.that?
I never usually use the order

@GMNoob for the analysis, do it in order, but for the actual selection, no, evaluate the whole
Ok, I'm definitely building my own spell document for the Wizzy analysis. jumping around in an alphebetized book is too hard. Order by level!
(or internal links!)

Yeah spell documents need links and seperated by level in alphabetical order by class

6:00 PM
spell components will make things interesting. Certain spells will require quests to be able to cast I think.

6:18 PM
Not too different from how some people choose to run it, from what I've seen.

@Metool yeah, I've only seen 2 where I think it would be interesting to require it. Mordenkainen's Sword (it needs a rather...specific focus), and Gate (gate has some interesting caveats already). Still mulling the spell list.
I don't think a special quest to cast anything that is going to be consumed is interesting, so Hero's Feast, while expensive, the bowl it requires is not something that should be quested for

good work guys. 9 minutes. Solid time

lol
I actually think human will be one of the more powerful choices once feats come out officially
with the human variant

free feat! yes plz

6:45 PM
especially with how powerful feats are
and their almost multiclass like ability to let you achieve a concept

Unrelated, I got feedback on my first session.
@Aaron "it’s encouraged in drow society for characters experienced with fleshcrafting to constantly experiment and invent new ways of twisting flesh"
How does that work? Are that many drow high-level? How?

hmm trying to find decent fantasy art of wizards/adventurers poring over tomes for my cheesy title Class(es) in session...
@waxeagle @gmnoob let me know if you find/can thi8nk of any

RELEASE THE CLOSE VOTES

6:55 PM
oh come on
undownvote, whoever downvoted
there are systems in place to handle this kind of question

downvote?
which one

if you're talking about the Trek question, the spam flags generate auto downvotes

No, the list of cross-platform thingies.
"This question is unlikely to be salvageable through editing, and might need to be removed." ?

it doesnt have a voted downvote

@Metool ah, in that case a DV or 3 doesn't hurt because we won't see any spam votes and a number of downvotes will let 10k/20k users vtd and/or it will let the autodelete script kick in

6:59 PM
someone probably marked it as spam

Ah.

Well, its about as relevant considering 5e is mostly just a mashup of 3.5, 4e, and a bit of pathfinder. Do you think a halfling could run between an ogres legs, stab him in the balls, and run out the other side in six seconds? If so? There's your answer. If no? Maybe two rounds would be the proper answer. — Sandwich 1 min ago
sigh
no, it's more like 2e with slightly more modern concepts
what I think a halfing does with an ogre's balls has little or nothing to do with what the system says he can
5

exactly
I just commented saying he should read the pdf (ITS FREE) before he answers 5e questions

@JoshuaAslanSmith srsly
I linked it in my last comment

Release the downvotes
lol

7:07 PM
aaand it's gone

@Grubermensch deleted by owner

thats a success in my book

@Metool You only need to be caster level 10.
@waxeagle I just read that out of context...

@GMNoob @waxeagle do we just want to commit to the array or to point buy? I think maybe we should just pick one?

@JoshuaAslanSmith I'd go point buy?
though Array might be better for analysis
@Aaron it was worded to be read out of context

7:13 PM
I really want to star that so other people joining the room will see it on the side bar and feel the same confusion I did.

there is only one reference to line of sight in Basic...and it's Frightened

D&D really stands for Don't Ask, Don't Tell @aaron @waxeagle

@JoshuaAslanSmith This is true.

what happens in the dungeon, stays in the dungeon

Min Max is better with point buy
But array better reflects the game and dice rolls

7:20 PM
hmm
Im super on the fence myself
Array is certainly easier

lets go array for consistency across the characters

okay
sounds good
intro first draft is up on the site

ok, all this crowing about rulings over rules...don't we need to understand how the rules work before we start breaking/changing/overruling them? (or is that just me?)

@waxeagle No, I'm right there with ya. It's the new RAW/RAI/Rule 0.

7:27 PM
@waxeagle I feel exactly the same way, theres been a flood of questions before and since the release and the answers in response have made me feel like I need to steel myself

Do we need to address on meta?

And frankly, it's generally just plain not useful as an answer. "Whatever makes sense" is not really an answer which draws on the experience, expertise, or insight this site is designed to bring to bear on questions.

like everyone who tried to ruin 4e questions (from my subjective viewpoint) intentionally and unintentionally is going to be all over 5e from the start.

@JoshuaAslanSmith yep

I dont want to feel like I have to fight to have my RAW-centric viewpoint heard, I think there is space for both but people have already gotten combative

7:29 PM
@waxeagle I'd support a meta discussion about it, but I shouldn't be the one to lead it.

I could possibly post it, Ive been the bugbear for 5th edition on meta

@JoshuaAslanSmith agreed

Both views are legitimate

ill try to draft something up.

@GMNoob agreed, though I'm seeing a lot of rulings over rules being played as trump
and that's what I'm reacting to

7:31 PM
@gmnoob not quite the feel im trying to go for, basically something like BESW's avatar but actually fantasy
did basic mention rule zero?

Sure you aren't being overly sensitive? If they site all the rules but in.the end say, 'but this case RAW doesn't feel right', what is wrong with that?

@JoshuaAslanSmith no, let me find the relevant passage

@GMNoob The problem is when one view is presented as more legitimate than the other. I've been called a "rules wonk" for wanting to know the RAW before I impose my own rulings on top of it.

no, it did not at all

@waxeagle [makes note]

7:33 PM
@gmnoob unlike with 4th Im not advocating that raw-centric is inherently right (which I think 4e attests to in its many books/documents) but rather that RAW should not be treated with contempt as it would be for a 3.5 question on this site
this is a brand new edition
lets see if we can avoid a meta-edition war in our Q & A

There is this passage on p3, which is suggestive but not explicitly Rule 0:
> Your DM might set the campaign on one of these worlds or on one that her or she created. Because there is so much diversity among the worlds of D&D, you should check with your DM about any house rules that will affect your play of the game. Ultimately, the Dungeon MAster is the authority on the campaign and its setiing, even if the setting is a published world.

gotcha, but thats a lot lot softer that explicit rule zero stuff in previous editions

Also:
> the DM decides what happens, often relying on the roll of a die to determine the results of an action.

@BESW heh, at least he's not taking thinly veiled pot shots at you in his blog: geek-related.com/2014/07/04/dd-5e-basic-rules-first-thoughts see point 4

@waxeagle Didn't Brian ask that question?

7:40 PM
Haters gonna hate, amirite?

@BESW aye, but I wrote the answer

@waxeagle whose blog is that?

@Grubermensch Is the capital A a transcription error there or actually part of the document?

@Metool Transcription, I seem to have a non-copy-friendly version of the PDF

@Metool Dungeon Master of Artster.

7:41 PM
is this mxyzplk's blog?

@Grubermensch The printer-friendly version is better for copypasta.
@JoshuaAslanSmith Aye.

I don't know what you mean, seems perfectly legit to me.

@Grubermensch grab the printer friendly version

7:42 PM
the most fleeting of childish thoughts went through my head of starting a blog war, that is all
@waxeagle @besw could you guys link me some examples for my meta question of disparaging answers? (I guess because if a question specifies raw or house rule that is their prerogative).

Hmm just read closely, and his min-maxer point doesn't work.

@Grubermensch and @DampeS8N I wrote a post on this :P rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/41918/…

It worked in the playtest
you could have advantage from different sources
you'd still only roll 2d20

@Grubermensch no, I pointed that out in the comments and he didn't respond

but if you had advantage from 2 sources and disadvantage from 1 source you'd still keep advantage

7:45 PM
no the point about having enough to cancel out
@JoshuaAslanSmith no you don't
p57 para 3 in adv/dis section

@grubermensch I was saying in the playtest
not basic
he is probably misremembering the playtest rules overtop of the Basic rules

@JoshuaAslanSmith A welcome change IMHO, Now if I have advantage from source A and disadvantage from source B, I can stop worrying about it right there and assume a standard roll.

Advantage doesn't stack/overlap, it's just a state you're in, you don't count how many instances you have of it?

@metool basically yes

Same disadvantage?

7:47 PM
@Metool actually this kind of parallels how inspiration works

@GMNoob but max is 15, if you roll you can get a 18

if you have 1 or more of both then neither comes into play

@Zachiel Yes, but 15,15,15,8,8,8 or 13,13,13,12,12,12 is VERY unlikely with a roll

@Grubermensch Hrum?

7:49 PM
@Metool you're either inspired or not. Though inspiration is transferable

In that both are have it, don't have it affairs, rather than collecting up points

Where's that from?

@Metool tis a new 5e mechanic, I'll find a cite for it

@Metool p35

I really should get the book if I want to participate in discussions on it.

7:50 PM
@metool ITS FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
@metool HERRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

@Metool the basic pdf is free and I'm sure waxeagle has a handy link

I love being right

@Zachiel I only have 2 copies of it up in my browser right now

The fastest gun in the west
beat me to it

7:51 PM
Anyway, @Metool, what was Legend's slang for "less items, more tracks"?

@Zachiel FBi.

I'm sure it was some allitteration...
I hate being wrong
"Full Buy in" it is

A: Are there roleplaying games where your race levels up separately from your class?

ZachielI know one system that might qualify, depending on what you mean by separately leveling up. If you want to get two separate XP tracks, one for race and one for class, you might as well ignore my answer. If you want a race that improves along class features, as if it was a parallel class such as K...

@JoshuaAslanSmith too awkward?

now I want a wizard with a fennec fox familiar

@BESW Somebody needs to tell Ursula that lemmings going down cliffs was the result of men's intervention. Those lemmings in that infamous video were thrown off a turntable.

Oh, she knows.

And I see nothing wrong in being the Lady of Slime Molds. Except her name shouldn't be Roberta but maybe Akane or Yoko or something Japanese like that XD

Thoughts here Not sure I can find the question

@waxeagle "Opinions, plox!"

@waxeagle My comment probably doesn't help. Sorry.

8:37 PM
@DampeS8N quite all right, it's illustrative of why this kind of question isn't a good fit for this format. It's an interpersonal problem

@waxeagle [twitch] Check your their/they're.

@waxeagle And metaphorical. :) Because this asshat DM got all butthurt cause his railroady plot was bruised.
@BESW their doesn't seem to be a problem they're to I.

@DampeS8N I'm not sure. Tyso's answer's analysis seems entirely plausible

@Zachiel Everybody gets ninja'ed sometime.

8:51 PM
@Grubermensch by 47 minutes! With a "new answers got posted" sign right over there!

@Zachiel Ehhh, punishing caution is like the dickiest-dick-move a DM can make.

I was kind of curious that you were asking about full buy-in earlier.

@DampeS8N He effectively said "choose your fate". I know, legalistic interpretation of what he said

@DampeS8N It's usually a response to ten-foot-pole paranoia (often also caused by the GM's actions), but doesn't ever help.

@Grubermensch in the end I decided not to get into buy-in explaination.
@BESW yay, total freedom! Whatever I do, I suffer bad consequences!

8:55 PM
@Zachiel Yeah it's not really pertinent to the matter at hand.

@Grubermensch I wanted to give a background of why tracks exist instead of monolithic classes, but had I mentioned FBi it would have been harder to explain the one circle per level mechanism

It occurs to me that the "homebrew world" thing might be part of the GM's problem; speaking from experience it's really hard to create a world that meshes gracefully with the mess of character options 3.5 offers.

@BESW Or any long-running game with loads of splatbooks, really.

Aye, though some are better suited than others.
3.5 has a hard time meshing gracefully with itself.
Today we discover if the BBC can legally murder someone: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/07/07/the-first-five-doctor-who-season-8-scripts-hit-the-internets-run/

There has to be more going on there than what we can see.
Nobody's dumb enough to leak their own watermarked copies of the script.
Time to find out who hates the boss.

9:09 PM
@Grubermensch can't one copy the whole script in a non watermarked fashion?

@Zachiel Maybe? Depending on how the watermarking is implemented and how skillful the user is?

Just manually copy it in a word processor

Six whole 45-minute telescripts?
I'm not sure Person We've Never Heard Of will have unsupervised access to the scripts long enough to do that.

I would suspect that people inclined to leak scripts don't have the perserverence to spend hours and hours retyping them.

@BESW long enough to get the file on some drive of oneself, as it seems.
Mh wait
No, even if it's scanned the thing still works
scan it, then copy it
or at least pass it through an editing program and remove anything brighter than 60% gray

9:21 PM
@BESW Working in an environment where such general secrecy would also probably be expected, no, most places trust their employees and trust an NDA to be good enough and are usually right.
I'm a person you've never heard of... well, in this kind of context... I could leak things on this same magnitude about games coming out in the future. It generally doesn't happen, and when it does, it is normally someone who is dumb enough to leak stuff with their name all over it.

Fair enough.

Q: Are setting questions for something that isn't a game campaign on-topic?

Nate KerkhofsIn the sci-fi book I'm currently researching, I'm currently struggling to come up with a reasonable act 3-4 adversary (about 2/3 through the book). Now, ordinarily, I'd ask this on writers.SE, but they don't like questions that are basically "what should I write about?". However, I understand RP...

9:53 PM
BESW has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

Much against my better judgement, I am conceding to the popular vote and adding Gnome Stew to our ticker.
If it gets obnoxious let me know.

@BESW Swap it out for the RPGBloggers feed if it does.

10:55 PM
Has there been anything announced about the Wizards Live Game?
My understanding was that they were streaming again tonight about nowish, but there's nothing on the Daily D&D archive.

11:15 PM
@Grubermensch I dunno, you could check the twitch channel?

@waxeagle It's offline... I'm hoping they're just late getting started...?

11:26 PM
@Grubermensch if they were playing tonight they'd be on already I think, last time they started at 7pm edt
