12:01 AM
@quarridors 4chan is currently waging a trolling war on Tumblr and I fear Doctor Who spoilers will be weaponized.

So, now that we are all Tom, who's gonna secretly rule over us?

The Dave Conspiracy is in tatters!

Exactly!
Or maybe some Tom is secretly Dave
Mmmh I wish this guy could teach me some skills. rpg.stackexchange.com/a/42042/4173

Heh.

I really wish he could.

12:07 AM
I disagree with his last point--I refuse to assume that people are incorrigible until proven otherwise on an individual basis.
But yes, I've seen GMs like that, and groups which consider it worthwhile to stay in their games because the railroads are so shiny.

I'm also not sure watching the session later is any useful
Even in the event you get railroaded to the max, there's still more fun in being there

@Zachiel Agreed.
RPGs are very much an "in the moment" medium.
Hence the Wannabe Vampire.

@BESW I probably am a DM like that, but when someone tries to go outside the tracks I just mutter some curses and then try to make a speech about why it's not a really good idea to do that.

rpg.stackexchange.com/q/42043/1204 Anyone wanna demonstrate how totally broken in terms of realism D&D 3.5e is?

I like the idea of people doing unexpected things, I just don't know what to do when it happens.
@JonathanHobbs No, not much, I see why level 6. Counterargument? Spells.

12:11 AM
Mmm. Define "reality" and its limits.

I mean, it's level 6 with the usual caveat: we choose to believe.

@BESW real world, current known human limits

Then talk about spells, but also: magical and intelligent species, the economy, the multiverse, provable gods...

But the gods are over level 6!

I mean, seriously. "Zombies exist and I can repel them with the strength of my faith."

12:13 AM
repel/control

I think the scope of what counts as "reality" and where it breaks needs to be more sharply defined for this question to be usefully answered. "Zombies exist and I can control them with the power of my faith" refutes the premise, as does "Elves," "spells," and "an adventure-based economy." — BESW 22 secs ago

@BESW good comment

It has been weeks since i mentioned how incredibly much i appreciate
SevenSidedDie's edits.

SevenSidedDie is a amazing editor

@Oxinabox one of the best we have.

@waxeagle also one of our most prolific data.stackexchange.com/rpg/query/6627/… (though this query only counts when they're the most recent editor of any given question, meaning the results are conservative and actual numbers are higher)

12:27 AM
@JonathanHobbs Though technically what that does suggest is that SSD produces highly definitive edits.

@Grubermensch that is true :D

Heh there were two answers just posted to the realism question and both reference E6

@waxeagle et al, I remember there being a meta-discussion about "content creation" questions such as "design me a homebrew sword". Do you know if I'm imagining things or where I might find such a question.
Also, I'm amazed at how D&D 5e is selling. My FLGS sold out and so did their distributer.

Q: How should I stat very powerful artifacts that the party acquires too early?

GuestA few weeks ago I started DMing a campaign that involves five divine artifacts that all of the gods' powers are filtered through. I planned on the paragon level quest being collecting these in order to either destroy or protect them. Unfortunately, one of my players rolled a natural 20 on Thiever...

Maybe this?

@BESW the discussion in question was much older, pre 2013, and featured ... no effective constraints, leading to a list feel

Some systems, like DFRPG, attract them more than others but in more understandable ways.

@BESW There's a common theme of ... "help me create X to solve Y problem", usually where the questioner has an intent, but doesn't know how to map it to the mechanics. That's well and good.
This was more: "Give me a list of ideas for swords"

Ah.

3:57 AM
It may have explicitly a list question ...

[digs deeper]
Well, there's this:

Q: Handy spells to have on scrolls for a specific scenario?

Jeff FryMy situation: I'm rolling up a 10th level Pathfinder witch, using all Paizo products standard starting wealth (62K GP) plus and the ability to choose Scribe Scroll if it turns out to be worth the cost of a feat a ratling familiar (with the ability to cast any spell of any class/level from a scr...

@BESW dunno ...

Yeah, probably not.
Unfortunately I can't keep looking.
I was doing searches for likely keywords ("weapon," "idea," "list," etc) with is:question closed:yes.

No worries, I can't find it either
things going alright in your world?

@C.Ross Hanging in there. Some fun RPG stuff, at least.
Played Roll For Shoes last Saturday; our first roll of the game was to find out whether Loud Bear was actually a bear.

4:11 AM
:-)

(He was.)

We played FAE TMNT a couple weeks ago ... it reached some new levels of absurdity

Oh, my!
That sounds glorious.

certainly memorable

I'm still searching for a simple escalation mechanic to make my pony engine functional.
The other day I remembered Cthulhu Dark's Insanity die, and I want to try running some sessions of that to see what it's like.

4:16 AM
Greetings

Heyo.

Tell me about the Insanity die, if you would :)

So, Cthulhu Dark uses d6s. Everybody's got three. One of them is green, and that's your insanity die.
To do something, you roll dice: one if it's within human capabilities, one if it's within your occupational expertise, and one if you will risk your sanity to succeed.
The highest die of your roll determines the level of your success; you always succeed unless someone else challenges you because they think failure would be interesting, but low numbers represent minimal success that probably causes more problems while higher numbers indicate brilliant success.

1. Can you always risk your sanity, even in mundane tasks? 2. What does it cost/get you to challenge someone?

But whenever your Insanity die rolls higher than your current Insanity, you roll it again (roll it also any time something Disturbing happens to you). If it gets higher than your Insanity again (Insanity starts at 1), your Insanity increases by 1. When you hit 5 Insanity you can start suppressing Mythos knowledge--like burning books--and roll to decrease your Insanity. At 6 Insanity, your character goes incurably insane and is retired as soon as gracelessly possible.
There does not appear to be a cost or reward for challenging; I'd probably re-examine that if I used the system.
As for risking insanity on mundane tasks, they leave that to the group.
Cthulhu Dark's rules don't fully cover a page front and back.

4:30 AM
A cute little system, then.

Aye.
Aside from some re-rolling and cooperation/pvp paragraphs, I've basically told you the system.

And so are ponies going to decide to risk their sanity, too?

Maybe a Freakout Die.
Or if I could somehow rejigger it to be a Friendship die, that'd be shiny.
Friendship starts at 6 and you roll the die when you're willing to risk your friendship to succeed...

But isn't Friendship between people, er, ponies? As in, not your personal stat.
You'd need Friendship for every other character (which isn't a problem).

Aye, I need to play Cthulhu Dark a few times and ruminate.
It's the escalation mechanic I'm really hung up on with this pony engine.

4:42 AM
What's the purpose of this mechanic? For PCs to risk their sanity/relationships/freaking out in order to achieve something?

To escalate interpony tension/drama until it comes to a climax and a catharsis.

Steal from DRYH, maybe?

Hmm. I'll have to read that again.
Cliff's Notes version?

Basic conflict resolution mechanics are: roll a dice pool, count 1-3 as successes, compare to the Pain die pool counting the same. However! Your die pool consists of 3 types of dice: Discipline, Exhaustion and Madness, and whichever gets the highest value dominates, which colors the scene and has further effects.
Discipline you always have 3 of (until you start really going mad), that's what normal people rely on. But you're not normal people, you've gone beyond being tired and into the mad fugue-state of hyper-clarity. You can increase the number of Exhaustion dice you have by 1 with any roll - you start with 0. These are sort of your hit points, as Pain dominating may also increase them. If you hit 6, you fall asleep and that's Bad.
And Madness you can add at any point, any amount. You have to use Madness to utilize your Madness talent (or are those called Insanity?), something supernatural and freaky which lets you do awesome things. The greater the effect, the more dice you have to add, up to 6. But you can just use them.
Madness dominating means you get a permanent Madness die. If you get 6, you lose 1 Discipline and replace it with Madness.
Exhaustion dominating also means you get 1 extra exhaustion.
So there's a steadily increasing die pool you have, and you can always increase it, but each time you roll you dread it.
Also, I could be messing up small bits of it, but that's the general idea.

I like it.
It defies one of my desired design elements, but I've long suspected I'd have to ditch that.
(Ideally the game only needs 5d6 to be played.)

4:52 AM
Eventually, it builds up to you running around with lots of Exhaustion and Madness, facing nightmarish things on equal footing. You basically have to accomplish your goal before you implode.

(5d6 is the number of dice in a Yahtzee set, meaning a non-RPG household could easily rustle up that many dice from board and dice games.)
Must dash! Taking some friends on a tour of the West side of the island. Kite flying, sunset, etc. ttfn

Have fun!

5:38 AM
> Trinket 83: A bit of folded cloth that, when unfolded, turns into a stylish cap.
Thank you, D&D. I needed something to complete my dwarf wizard, and that was it.

I need an answer to my question so I know if I should pick a halfling or a wood elf... time to send my questions to mike mearls and trevor on twitter :)
@Magician why is your question on hold? Very insulting comments there...

@GMNoob Because the final rules are slightly different, and these differences could well impact the answer. The question is about the published rules, after all. So while I disagree with putting it on hold, I'm not fussed as long as it gets opened up again soon.

@Magician Ok, which rule changed which has any impact on the question?

It's a tricky case. As each of the core books come out, they potentially can invalidate existing answers by presenting wholly new aspects of the game. I'm not sure if that means the question should be re-asked each time or just forgotten until the core books are out, or what else.

I'm so sick of this "in theory something is different, and I don't know why so I'm going to diligitimize your answer because maybe somewhere in the universe things aren't as you say"
Yeah, and cows might jump over the moon...

5:53 AM
I haven't followed the playtest that closely (nor have I read the Basic rules in detail yet) to say what's different, but I'm under the impression that something has changed - I've seen traces of that discussion. And I'd have been very surprised had the rules not been refined in the year since the playtest had ended.

Rules changed yes, but nothing that changes the answers to the question.

These could all be trivial numeric refinements which do not impact the larger game experience.

We knew about inspiration for 6 months or so, even though they were not in the official playtest packet
I've been playing with it for atleast 3 months!

Don't take this personally. Again, I don't agree with the decision to put it on hold, as I think a critical reading of the rules plus a game or two can be used as the basis for an answer.
I certainly don't think it should take a couple more months for people to be able to answer it.

How can I not take it personally when my very well thought out and long worked on answer is called "attracting bad answers"?

5:59 AM

Q: How can an answer with 14 upvotes be called a "bad answer"?

GMNoob@Magician posted a question here : What are the stand-out features of D&D 5e? Asking what stands out for D&D 5e. It was closed as being too opinion based, with the stated logic in the comments being that it's attracting bad answers and maybe can be reopened in a couple months. However, the que...

6:25 AM
So, basically what I'm learning again and again and again, is that if somebody wants to ask a question about 5e, RPG.SE is the worst possible website to get information from.

Boy, what a session.
My character spent most of his time away from the rest of the party being badass and blowing stuff up.

1 hour later…
@Metool What's the Bell for?

@JonathanHobbs Do you really want to know?

@Metool lol

@Metool Even more so now

I assume an alarm trap

8:43 AM
Tie it around a prisoner's neck and watch the prick try to escape unnoticed!
Run through the town ringing it and yelling that the British are coming?
The guards change shifts whenever a bell is rung?

Couldn't get it out of him.
Having rolled up a wood elf cleric, I need to figure out the mystery of... a mosaic tile with a multicolored, glazed surface. Thanks, trinket table!

9:01 AM
Obviously an old temple found in the woods

9:55 AM
@Metool You have stumbled across an ancient eldritch do-it-yourself kitchen installation.

(of dooom.)

It could be a piece of something of cosmic proportions.

10:08 AM
@kviiri The hangnail of a Great Vampire!

A window to the Universe of Colorful Geometry!

10:25 AM
So now my character counts as a small gang in combat.

@waxeagle Is what you just edited into my answer more than just a restatement of that information in the question (with the addition of the feat's source)?
I think what András is asking for is a discussion of how that feat interplays with the Rule Compendium guideline I quoted and what it means at the table.

1 hour later…
11:30 AM
Interesting design choice (or not-choice): Cthulhu Dark never says what size die it uses.
It heavily implies that 6 is the highest possible outcome of a single die roll, but it never actually says so.
Obviously they mean d6s, and I assume they figure that d6 is the default die size unless otherwise stated so why would they say so?
But it's curious to me, from a communication/design standpoint, that they omitted the clarification.

For most people, a "die" is six-sided. Anyone in RP would probably want clarification though.

i certainly would
especially since I started in a system where you constantly rolled d20's for everything

It'd be interesting to play Cthulhu Dark with, say, d10s.
You'd "succeed brilliantly" a lot more, but your insanity would also skyrocket.
Although... hrm, scratch that.
Using d10s would make it more likely that you'd gain insanity when you did use the insanity die, but it'd also make using the insanity die a lot less tempting.
@Phil Hi!

11:45 AM

@BESW The feat basically lets you break that rule (it reads something to the effect of "targets of your shrouds are not aware of their placement")
I didn't read the question, I'll re-edit

Good morning

Hello Aaron!

12:04 PM
@GMNoob Ive voted to reopen

@JoshuaAslanSmith :D

I'm gonna stick to Thumper's law here.

@waxeagle Thumper's law?

@Aaron From Bambi?

Oh.
God I feel old now.
I haven't seen that movie for at least 15 years

12:13 PM
@waxeagle still not sure what thumper's law is :P

I might be pushing 20
@GMNoob In the film, Thumper the bunny's mom tells him "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" thus was born Thumper's law.

@waxeagle Pushing the edge of 20 or about to turn 20?

@Aaron since I've seen the film...i'm personally pushing 30

@waxeagle Ok, cause I was trying to figure out how "Bang your foot up and down real quick" was relevant to a chat room

That law is applied so often that it has an unfortunate corollary: "When nothing is said, assume it's negative."

12:15 PM
@GMNoob well...

@waxeagle Oh I misunderstood.

I don't know how long it's been since I've seen Bambi, but it's longer since I've seen Bambi meets Godzilla. youtube.com/watch?v=n-wUdetAAlY&feature=kp

and I changed my mind. I can do this nicely.

because you watched the video, right?

@GMNoob nope
because I'm an adult.

12:26 PM
lol
yes

@JoshuaAslanSmith What are you lol/yes ing?

@GMNoob I think thats at me being an adult...but I'm not sure, they aren't replies

I feel terrible that a "simple" rules question is making it hard for me to choose halfling or woodelf
though I think "lucky" might actually be the deciding factor, now that we are using the standard array and I can't use 15,15,15,8,8,8

If you want to be Irish, Halfling. Nordic, Wood Elf.

@GMNoob lol. I'm thinking that the LOS rules (when they come out), will preclude you from using your strategy. An Ogre should be able to see his entire square

12:37 PM
@waxeagle But at the same time, a halfling hiding between the legs of a giant is pretty iconic in fiction.
Ogre bends over to look for halfling and falls on it's face as it peers between its legs.

@GMNoob sure, and I'd bet most DMs would allow it....but it's not something I'd base a character concept on

@waxeagle Even if his name is Reginald Groinbuster?

12:55 PM
@waxeagle it was about you asserting your adulthood
I need to learn some of the anydice syntax to underline my choices

I was able to pick up anydice pretty quickly, what do you need help with?

Im not actively working on it right now
but I shall ping you if I have problems
So im thinking the str con dwarf for ultimate greatweapon fighting superiority

@waxeagle Inspiration wasn't in the playtest packet, but it was written about and I've been playing with it for a while. wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4ll/20130722 Looking at the date it's almost been a year allready!

@GMNoob did I miss any real standout features in my answer?

During the very first DnD session I was in, the possibility of using "squeeze" to fit inside various body cavities to defeat large enemies from the inside was discussed. We sort of agreed to not bring the possibility up when we're actually fighting large creatures...

1:07 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith It's a tossup if the str fighter or dex fighter is better

@kviiri reasonable to me :)

@waxeagle Not that I'm aware of. The only thing you missed is the tone and how that tone affects play and makes things slightly less RAW even if they aren't really less RAW.

@GMNoob yeah, and that's not my area tbh.

Eh? max damage on ranged/dex fighter is 1d10 + bonus 2 (not counting mod here) vs 2d6 with Reroll once on 1s and 2s

@JoshuaAslanSmith TWF

1:08 PM
crits are now double weapon die before mods applied

Also the higher initiative and dex saves
But I'm reading that inspiration article from 1 year ago and I can't see anything they changed from it.

plus light armor

Chainmail is 1 better AC than sudded leather at level 1
so armor is a plus for sword and board
Dueling is actually an interesting choice as well
but I need to figure out the best rogue still lol
@JoshuaAslanSmith Wait, where does the dex fighter get a 1d10 from? :)

Crossbow, heavy
load isn't a standard action anymore, but rather you just can't make multiple attacks with a load weapon as part of the same action
not sure how bonus actions affect that

One shot on the crossbow per turn , no matter how many actions you have.

1:17 PM
ooh, dagger chucking can be done 2x per round too
(not that it's an optimal choice at this point...but)

Is a woodelf rogue's access to a 1d8 weapon (longbow) better than the "lucky" of the halfling?

yeah one of my players did two weapon dagger rogue
shortbow is a d6 right?

yep

lucky applies to all d20 checks though right?

@GMNoob effectively halfling is rolling d19+1... vs 1 extra damage

1:19 PM
DnD crossbow is insanely rapid-fire and relatively weak compared to its real-life counterpart :P

@kviiri Indeed. It reminds me of the crossbow from the Van Helsing movie with Hugh Jackman.

I'd need the whole expression to tell you yeah or neah

Lucky. When you roll a 1 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can reroll the die and must use the new roll.
With advantage, you can only reroll one of the die

Maybe it's a Chinese repeating crossbow. I don't think those have the armor-penetrating goodness of the heavier European ones but oh boy they fire fast.

@GMNoob I'd think that it would only reroll if they both came up 1

1:21 PM
@waxeagle Which whole expression?
@waxeagle Nope, rules are explicit :)

@GMNoob your whole attack expression. +x to the attack 1d8 + y

When you have advantage or disadvantage and something in the game, such as the halfling’s Lucky trait, lets you reroll the d20, you can reroll only one of the dice. You choose which one. For example, if a halfling has advantage on an ability check and rolls a 1 and a 13, the halfling could use the Lucky trait to reroll the 1.

Wikipedia puts a chu ke nu's ROF at 10 bolts in 15 seconds (by trained soldier) - sounds like DnD crossbow now.

does that mean they forfeit the advantage since they must use the result?

So it would be 1d8+1d6+3 vs 2d6+3
@waxeagle No , they must use the result in the advantage roll

1:23 PM
11 vs 10, what's the to hit?

1d20+5

@GMNoob ah, that makes sense
average L1 AC? let's say it's 12.... just for kicks.

@waxeagle More like 13
If it matters, a woodelf also moves 10 feet faster than a halfling

13 then...hit chance for the woodelf is ...65% and for the halfling it's ~67% (slightly more complicated, I'll work it all out in a moment). Ignoring crits for the moment... the wood elf appears to have the advantage
but I need a spreadsheet for the next part

Why is their to hit different?

1:27 PM
@GMNoob rerolls the 1

oh because of the reroll of 1
gotcha!
crit would be 2d8+2d6+3 vs 4d6+3

@GMNoob the fact is though that the halfling gets a slightly larger crit chance too
and we're assuming advantage which...complicates things

Ok, sounds like a job for anydice :)

@GMNoob yep

@gmnoob yeah basically if you want sword and board Dueling seems like a must, also very nice if you are mounted with a lance 1d12+2+mod damage
@kviiri vs a long bow though? Honestly never understood why Longbows were given the short edge of the stick in D&D. A trained yeoman firing a longbow, fires faster, and hits just as hard as a crossbow from the time
the advantage of a crossbow is it requires minimal training vs. longbowmen which require constant training to maintain their fitness
to the point that dice and cards were once outlawed in england because they were seen as a dangerous distraction for the yeomen

1:33 PM
@waxeagle does this look right? anydice.com/program/400a

@GMNoob it rerolls both dice
(if you roll 2 1s)

Alright so I need to do 1d20 1d6 + mod x2 vs 1d20 2d6+mod reroll 1 and 2

@JoshuaAslanSmith I don't really think you can pull of aimed longbow shots at that rate

To any dice
oh time for me to give you a video if I can find it

I could be wrong. But I'm fairly sure at least sustained fire is impossible, you need insane arm strength to pull that off.

1:37 PM
@waxeagle No, because of the result
atleast I think thats how it works.
result is like a "return" statement. Once it hits the result it doesn't run the next line of code.

@GMNoob ah, gotcha

@JoshuaAslanSmith Wikipedia is fairly laconic on it, only comparing it to crossbow and early firearms, both very slow. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Longbow#Shooting_rate

@kviiri People fire compound bows that need more strength than a longbow very quickly so being able to rapid fire a longbow if you are trained isn't too much of a stretch. Add that to the fact characters are super human.

@Aaron Do you mean composite bows?
I think they need less strength than a crossbow.
I'm sorry, less than a longbow I mean.

1:40 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith what is 1d6 + mod x 2 for ?
TWF?

@gmnoob yeah

Oh yeah, those. I was unaware of the English term.

@GMNoob Dang he is accurate to.

@kviiri I think he he might be referring to composite though, because compound take way less strenght than a longbow

Ah, I see.

1:42 PM
80lb draw for 20lb or so

@kviiri Depends on how much weight they are designed for.

The English longbow, also called the Welsh longbow, is a powerful type of medieval longbow (a tall bow for archery) about long used by the English and Welsh for hunting and as a weapon in medieval warfare. English use of longbows was effective against the French during the Hundred Years' War, particularly at the start of the war in the battles of Sluys (1340), Crécy (1346), and Poitiers (1356), and perhaps most famously at the Battle of Agincourt (1415). They were less successful after this, with longbowmen having their lines broken at the Battle of Verneuil (1424), and being completely...

@GMNoob now that we have our odds, we can figure out which you should choose based on damage

@JoshuaAslanSmith There's a section about "rate of fire" but it's rather vague.
I posted it a few lines back.

yeah gotcha

1:44 PM
9.75 crit chance vs 10.21 for the halfling.
damage difference is 4d6+3 vs 2d8+2d6 + 3...so 17 vs 19

basically I watched a special on the hisory channel years ago where a trained yeoman longbow user could fire I think 12 shots in the time that the crossbowman fired off 1

1.66 vs 1.94

@JoshuaAslanSmith I don't doubt that, the "normal" crossbow is very slow.

*including setting the crossbow and loading
and as for accurate fire, in large scale combat its volley fire anyway
brb

@GMNoob That was cool.

1:46 PM
However, not all crossbows are that slow. The Chinese did use a repeating model for over a millenium, one that reloads bolts from a magazine with a single hand movement. It has an insane firing speed, but obviously lacks the penetrating power of a heavier single-shot model.

7.965 vs 8.58
so yeah. Wood Elf > Halfing for damage
(at least at L1, as Sneak Attack goes up, it probably gets better for the halfling)
that extra .5% crit chance starts meaning a lot more

@JoshuaAslanSmith The crossbow (single-shot model) changed this somewhat, as you could keep one cocked and readied indefinitely and only release it when the target approaches.

@JoshuaAslanSmith Here : anydice.com/program/400b

The crossbow is a sharpshooting weapon.

@waxeagle Is there a nice graph I can make on anydice?

1:51 PM
@GMNoob I'm working on one

@JoshuaAslanSmith Looks like TWF is better than brutal 2d6
Though it will change at higher levels, cause TWF will only get 1 extra d6+3 while the heavyweapon will get 2 or 3 brutals

For those wanting to see more of the Wizards Live Game, I have unearthed:
