5:06 PM
@kryan Im with wax its fodder for a real question and you would the the arbiter in who gets best answer
though it does lead to a question and answer arms race

@JoshuaAslanSmith that's my fear
huh, here I don't have my avatar while in the other room I do?
huh

Specifically when mxy added that bounty to his own question about how to ignore the spirit of 4e when you play 4e

that FAQ-as-RAW thing?

hmmm thats weird

the FAQ doesn't even include the quote mentioned
actually
what is the appropriate way to handle that?
we have an answer that has a quote
attributed to the FAQ

5:13 PM
but its not in faq?

fairly well-upvoted, likely because of its claimed authority
and it's not in the FAQ
not that I can find

yeah I dont know if thats a comment and downvote or a flag issue

I'd already downvoted
I'll comment for now in case the author can clarify or link to the source

PAge 46.
In the official 3.5 FAQ.
It's the second question on the page.

oh whoops
I thought he was attributing the third quote in his answer also to the FAQ
who starred me saying "it involves a fight with mxyzplk"?
I am very not-comfortable with that
...which does mean I shouldn't have said it, but oh well
blargh

5:20 PM
Today I discovered that arguing on the internet is not an acceptable replacement for sleep.

@KRyan I've cancelled the star on it.

@DuckTapeal Lies. Hate alone can sustain us

That's the problem: There wasn't really any hate, just some mild frustration.
And even that got cleared up.

@waxeagle thanks. the point of the statement was expressing a desire to avoid such a fight, and having it starred might prompt one
@DuckTapeal on that point, if you edit your question I'll swap my - to a +

Which edit? I made a few while we were talking, so I don't remember missing one.

5:27 PM
is the roll 6 sets of 4d6 and assign them as desired a normal system in dnd and PF?

Reasonably normal, though point buy is becoming more in vogue.

@Aaron 4e has a strong preference for pointbuy

I think point buy is standard in PF, IIRc.

though it does have rules for rolled stats

Ok.
I was trying to decide if I should use rolled stats for my blog or the point buy system.

5:29 PM
Point buy! It's way better.

@DuckTapeal eh. I never liked it but for the blog I suppose it would be better

@DuckTapeal no, I mean my - is locked in until you edit the question again

Ah. 1 sec.

I also deleted a whole bunch of comments of mine that I think are obsolete
I flagged but maybe we could save the mods some work

@Aaron if you're writing for a blog, standard arrays might be even smarter

5:31 PM
Edited!

@waxeagle That is what I was thinking. Something with a set system for a blog is better than random.

k

I will just point out. Here are the important stats for this build in case they are using the 6:4d6
actually my group uses a 7:4d6 and drop the lowest roll.

I shudder when I remember the days when my old group used rolling. I never had a stat above 14 until point buy.

@DuckTapeal ugh. I hate randomization in any lasting stat
2
HP, abilities, whatever

5:34 PM
Same.

@DuckTapeal I rarely have stats below 14.

@Aaron that's bad too, though

It's just a luck thing. If you have thousands of people making characters with 6:4d6, someone has to be the guy who gets utterly screwed by the dice.

@KRyan It works for us.

I once played in a game where I had like 8, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 while someone else had like
16, 16, 17, 18, 18, 18
that game sucked
for everyone, too

5:35 PM
our dm scales the game to our characters and we still have lots of fun.

@Aaron it's impossible to scale things for a 20 PB and 40 PB character in the same group
Angel Summoner and BMX Bandit problem
2

Fact: I have to star any mention of The Mitchell And Webb Look.
*that

@KRyan perhaps. We had a person who was useless in battle but still had fun.

It's certainly still possible to have fun with random stats, especially if your group tends to roll similarly, but point buy just takes one possible problem out of character creation.

@Aaron it wasn't just battle I was useless in
my character was supposed to be good at something

5:38 PM
It's just not as fun playing a gimped character. It's usually salvagable, and you can still play, but it's better when everyone is useful.

I built the character, to the best of my ability given what I was working with, to be good at that thing
the other character who had mostly ignored that thing did better than me at that thing every time
because his stats were so much massively better
I didn't want to play a gimped character, I wanted to play a character who was good at a particular thing, and the goblin dice told me I couldn't do that
and "thing" here could literally be anything at all

@Lord_Gareth lol
@kyran sorry I thought of it more as funny than full of malice but yes that could be extremely taken out of fontext

@JoshuaAslanSmith no problem

6:18 PM
@waxeagle can you look iver my comments on the aid another question? Add anything you see fit.

@JoshuaAslanSmith I think you've got it

If I wanted to aim at the ground of a 5x5 square with an arrow is there a AC for something like that? If there is I will write up a question for it.

According to the Splash Weapon rules, trying to hit a particular grid intersection is AC 5. Targeting a square would be the same, I think.
Given some time I could probably find you a reference on that, if you need one.

Hello everyone.

hiya
what can we do ya for?

6:31 PM
Nothing right now, just being social if that is okay.

quite all right

Well, I guess I do have one question, but it is about a board game, not a pen & paper game.
Has anyone played City of Thieves?

@DuckTapeal Thanks. I am going to write up a question. If you could reference it on there it would be nice.

Nope though therw is a boardgames se

I am running a nWoD Mage campaign. Anyone here familiar with that system?

6:43 PM
I am, a little bit.

Does the system allow you to actually create spells from scratch with enough Gnosis and ranks in the specific school you are working with or is it only intended to allow you to combine and modify existing spells?

Do you mean like making new rotes, or spontaneously making new magical effects?

I guess either. Technically I am referring to creating rotes from scratch, but I was not sure if you could do it with spontaneously casting either.

Do you have the core rulebook with you? Check out page 289, Creative Thaumaturgy.

I am fairly familiar with WoD, but I find Mage to be by far the most complex system.

6:47 PM
That looks like it's what you're trying to do.

k, just a sec.

MAge is definitely super complicated.

I am looking at a pdf. I don't have a physical copy in front of me.

Same here.
If we have the same pdf, it should be on page 291 of the pdf.

Yup, that looks to be what I was looking for.

6:54 PM
Woot.

Thanks. =)

Anytime.
I can reference any rule in a book that I've read as a full round action if I have the book in front of me, and I like using my powers for good.

It's funny. My group likes Mage, but I expected them to like it best of the WoD themes. It is the most High Fantasy, which they tend to like. But when it comes to WoD, they seem to prefer Hunter. They like the grittier feel of it.

That makes sense. There's a bit of dissonance with the power and flexibility that MAge gives you that doesn't fit very well in the whole 'modern gothic' theme.

Makes them think of the TV show Supernatural. =)
Yea, that is the impression I get. It can be a bit hard to balance the fantasy and horror at times.
Gonna start running Pathfinder on alternating weekends now though. Just to balance things out a bit.
Gonna be running an adventure path for the first time. I always run my own stuff in the past.
Should be an interesting experience.

7:02 PM
Sounds like fun.
I need to get back into playing. I haven't had a regular game in like 4 years.

I am fortunate enough to have a group that shows up most of the time and I don't have too many problems.
Sadly I have had to turn people down. I am already running a party of 5 people.

I think we may have different ideas of what a big party is.
My last regular game involved 8 players+GM.

I don't want to ask a single sentence question but how complicated can you get when the basic question is "If I were to fire an arrow at an empty 5x5 square what would the AC of the square be?"

Is that an actual question or is it rhetorical?

7:06 PM
That's the best reference that I could find with minimal searching.

"What is the AC of an Empty Square?"
"I'm working on optimization problem X, and I need to know the AC of an empty square.
I've done research XYZ and I don't have an answer yet because Q"

@waxeagle thanks.

Because in pathfinder I always thought you needed to hit a 5AC as a norm for inanimate objects.

If you're asking for sheer curiosity, you've got your answer. If you need to solve a further problem, ask a question about the further problem.

@Aaron and address why the splash weapon text in the psrd doesn't do it for you

7:08 PM
For a Medium object, it would be 10 - 5 (dex) = 5 AC. Bigger or smaller objects would have size modifiers.

It was mainly curiosity but I thought it would make an appropriate question as well. I wasn't able to find anything when I googled it.

Also, what system are you using? It's clearly d20, but I want to make sure I'm linking you to the right SRD.

I also looked on the pfsrd and didn't have any luck.
@DuckTapeal pathfinder

@DuckTapeal I don't usually run more than that for two reasons. One, I don't have the space. Two, I feel that if I tend to run more than that, not everyone gets much play time. Especially not everyone in the group is experienced role-players, so it can go pretty slowly sometimes.

@Phorden Fair enough. We always played at a game store with plenty of space, and we spent enough of the session just hanging out that it never ended up being a problem.
Well, rarely ended up being a problem.

7:11 PM
@DuckTapeal Yea, that would make it easier. I have a dedicated room in my house I use for gaming. Man, I love having surround sound in there.

@Aaron Here's the pfsrd link for the splash weapon rules that talk about the AC of an intersection: d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/combat#TOC-Throw-Splash-Weapon

@waxeagle I don't think this format really fits because I was more asking out of curiosity and because of that arrow design.

What arrow design?

@Aaron re: the arrow. Delivery should not be the roll you're worried about. It should be a reflex save to GTFO for whatever critter is in the vicinity.
you don't need to hit anywhere close to your target with that.

7:14 PM
(or in 4e terms, an attack vs Reflex defense)

Ah, that design.

@waxeagle Well the Tarrasque isn't exactly nimble.
is it?
Looks up stats again
Good lord how does that thing have a 20 reflex!!!!

You really want the splash weapon rules. Especially the parts about misfire, so you know where it goes if(when) you miss.
It's got like a jillion hit dice.

@DuckTapeal Yea I realized the arrow would count as a splash weapon rather then a arrow not long after splash weapons were being talked about.

Has anyone here run a gunslinger in Pathfinder?

7:18 PM
Not personally, but I watched a friend run one for a little while.

What is your opinion on the gun mechanics? Are they pretty well balanced?

I think so.
They're super deadly if you can make them work for you, but that describes a lot of things in PF.

Okay, I wasn't sure, and I always thought it would be better to run the DR alternative rules for armor, which I wasn't sure if it would nerf them or make them balanced.

The grit stuff is pretty interesting, and the 'touch attack within 1 ranged increment' makes them very dangerous at close range, but basically a gunslinger is a ranged rogue with more options and less damage.
Do you have a link to the DR rules for armour? I'm not familiar with those.

@Phorden I have and am

7:21 PM
sec
I remember these being in either advance players guide or more likely ultimate combat.

That'll hurt gunslingers kind of a lot. Adding shield and armour enhancement bonuses to touch AC means that one of the gunsligner's best ways of assuring a hit goes away, and they're basically just rogues with grit instead of sneak attack and an expensive weapon.

@Phorden Gunslingers can be quite powerful if you can manage to get a high dex (I currently have a dex mod of 10) and you have the gold to buy good ammo. I use enchanted ammo of various elements for the extra 1d6. Also if you can manage to get extra arms and take multi weapon fighting you get that many more hits and due to hitting at touch you can afford the negatives.

Okay, I just have never allowed them because guns seemed to add another level of potential brokenness and complication to the system.
But I didn't know anyone who had run a gunslinger, so I wasn't sure.

Totally fair.
It's like adding psionics: it's something to keep track of, but it's not inherently broken.

@DuckTapeal except the Aegis. I can't see that class being called not broken.

7:29 PM
And the Erudite, of course.

I remember some broken stuff in 3.0 and 3.5, such as the Warlock class. So OP.

Lol. Warlock was a class where half my group said "that's super OP" and the other half said "That's gimped into uselessness".
I'm in camp B.
What do you think is OP about it?

Perfect flight 24/7 for one.

@Phorden Oh what is so bad about that? It isn't like they would fly out of range and then pelt enemies with fireballs or anything.

@Aaron In 3.5 having perfect flight + invisibility pretty much meant that very few things could touch them.

7:37 PM
The problem with warlocks is that their list of tricks is super limited. They've got power, but too little versatility to be Tier 1.
Have you seen the tier explanation for Warlock?

Nah, I didn't actually look that deep into it to be fair.
This is based on witnessing a warlock in a campaign and not thoroughly reading the class.

The short version is that warlocks are pretty good in the early to mid-game, but their best invocations are the equivalent of 6th level spells, so primary casters get way better than them at higher levels.
Also, you can duplicate a lot of their better abilities with magic items.
Ring of invisibility, carpet of flying, etc.

@DuckTapeal Alright.
I have heard that the Druid's wildshape ability makes them one of the more powerful classes in pathfinder. Thoughts on this?

Druid is a clear tier 1, no matter how you slice it, and wildshape is just icing on the cake.
A reasonably well built druid can do both primary caster and front line melee at the same time, which is not something most classes can do.

Yea, that's the impression I got.

7:45 PM
Especially once they get the beast shape 3 version at 8th level, and can mimic practically any natural extraordinary ability.

Is there like a copyright SE? I have a random question about the fact that Candy Crush has a copyright on the word "Candy"

It's not quite as bad as it was in 3.5, but it's still super powerful.

Also I think the summoner archetype where they can merge with their summon is pretty freaking strong.

@Aaron I might be able to help you with that, depending on the question. I'm a video game developer, and I read a lot about that when it first happened.

@Aaron, Candy Crush/King cannot have a copyright on "Candy." They might have it trademarked, however.

7:47 PM
They trademarked it.

@DuckTapeal If I make a game that has an item called Candy would I have any issues?

Or rather, they put in a trademark claim which can still be disputed, IIRC.

A video game? Yes.

Whether I make money on the game or not.

If you make, "Candy Smash,"

7:47 PM
@Dane No not the title an item in the game.
Just "Candy"

@Aaron If it just contains an item called "candy", you're in the clear. The trademark means that if your game can be mistaken for one of King's games, they can go after you.
Just having an item called "Candy" won't cause any problems.

I am not a lawyer, etc., but "candy" as something you eat in a game should not be a conflict.

I know didly squat about copyrights/trademarks so.
@DuckTapeal Ahhh. Thanks.

If you have "candy" in a game that you arrange in rows and crush . . .

@Dane Ok so it isn't the word then? I must have missread it.

7:49 PM
@Aaron yeah, you're fine. Trademarks can't be used like that.

@Phorden Thanks

The point of a trademark is to prevent people from making similar products and profiting off of your name. If the game doesn't have "Candy" in it's name, then you're probably fine.

Trademarks are there so that I can't sell a soda called "Coke" and mislead people into thinking they're buying Coca-cola.

@Phorden Summoners are pretty solidly tier 2, but there isn't much that they can do to get beyond that.

@DuckTapeal: what's the "tier" reference?

7:51 PM
Not so much summoners as a whole, but the specific archetype I was referring to.
@DuckTapeal The vanilla summoner class in not really broken.

I wouldn't call it broken, but it's certainly powerful.

@Dane Fair enough. Much more reasonable than what I thought.

Basically, it's a way of stacking 3.5/PF classes against one another.

sooo. I am bored anyone want a random build built? Something specialized.

It uses a pretty broad set of definitions that of course have been argued to death a thousand times, but it's usually pretty good.

7:54 PM
Does the Tier system take skills into account or is is strictly combat based?

@Phorden Oh if you are interested I have a gunslinger build on my blog. I am still learning blogging and optimization but here you go. acfreak.wordpress.com

It takes everything into account. If a class is versatile enough that it can handle a lot of different situations, then it's a higher tier.
Like, Beguilers are in tier 3, despite the fact that they're not great in combat.
Because outside of combat, they have a lot of stuff that they're good at.

@Aaron: what do you build? D&D 3.5?

@Dane Pathfinder.
@Dane I eventually plan on branching out but I am trying to learn one system at a time.

Bards are above Rogues in the tier system because of spells and social skills, right?
Because my experience has been Rogues solving more problems than Bards.

8:02 PM
Also because there's a LOT of PRc options, and stuff that you can do with your songs as a bard.
What kind of problem can a rogue solve that a bard can't?

I'm not necessarily arguing the tiering in the abstract. I'm just speaking from in-game experience and impressions.
Rogues seem to do a lot more damage when that is called for, and usually have better stealth/scout skills.

This also assumes players of equal skill at playing and character building, which skews things.

Right. I'm thinking that the Bards were simply not played to their potential.

Rogues are good at damage, but there's nothing that stops a bard from being just as stealthy. Even stealthier, given the right spells and songs.
For example, I played a wizard in a long-running game. I'm so bad at optimization and general play that I was closer to tier 3 in my play than tier 1.

(Apart from the skill-point differential and the lack of a reason for a Rogue to invest in CHA over INT)
Player skill is definitely a huge factor.

8:05 PM
Arguably the biggest factor.

We have a sorcerer (Tier 2) in a party of Tier 4/5, but the player is relatively inexpert, and thus does not steal the show.

Somewhere in one of these tier system threads it suggests that most of your group is within a tier of eachother, with the better players playing lower tiers and teh worse players playing higher tiers.
Exactly.

I've wanted to play a game where every single PC was a Cleric. Or a Wizard. Or a Druid. But all the same class. I've wondered whether the Tier-I power of such a party would make up for the lack of melee meatshields.
(Of course, Druids and Clerics can be melee meatshields...)

If the players properly specialized, lack of meatshields wouldn't be a problem.
OF course, getting to mid level as a group of d4 hit die casters is a different problem.
Also, this is a pretty good guide for why everything is in the tier that it is:brilliantgameologists.com/boards/…
It's an interesting read.

@DuckTapeal irrelevant, they all contract their own party to get them to mid level, and join forces after trouncing their parties

8:10 PM
Lol.

their wizards afterall
(or clerics or Druids or whatnots)

Have a good rest of the day guys.

True. Even hiring mercenaries according to the core books wouldn't be that bad.
Take Leadership at level 6 (or whatever) and pick up some bodyguards...

Use summoned monsters to keep your enemies back while the other guys nuke them...
It's doable, just difficult until you get some mid-level spells.

Shoot! I'm not sure when, where, or how, but I'm going to get some experienced D&D3.5ers together to run an all-wizards campaign.

8:14 PM
The world will be destroyed by level 10. :)

Oh, for sure. And we'll take on the Great Wheel!

And the pile of intelligent squirrels that runs Sigil!

Man, I'm thinking back to my halfling sorcerer. He ended whole encounters before they started.
He also had an exotic saddle made for his trusty Dwarf Cleric mount...
I'm presuming that the all-wizards campaign would be insane.

Likely.

@Dane Null magic zone

8:20 PM
@Aaron How big?

@Dane The whooooole world.

Don't go there.

And at what level do they encounter it.

For a single encounter

Problem solved.

8:20 PM
"Magic doesn't work in this city" is a problem easily solved by mid to high level wizards.

@DuckTapeal ?

The solution depends on exactly what you're doing in the city, but you've got enough spells to deal with it by 10th or 11th.
If it's just "Kill some guys in the center of this dead magic zone" then just fly above it and drop things on them until everyone is dead.
"Everything is air-droppable at least once".

@DuckTapeal Field goes all the way to space.

If we're just playing "nerf the wizard with dm fiat", then yeah, you can screw them over to the point where they're useless, but that means your players aren't having any fun.

@DuckTapeal No I am just curious of different ways to do it.

8:26 PM
Hmm.
Might have to do some engineering. Maybe magically enhanced catapults?
Alternately, figure out why they're still in the city and lure them out.
A couple divinations and a few teleports and you've got all their loved ones ready to be hostages.

@DuckTapeal Not bad. that may work. As would luring.

8:50 PM
@Aaron a 16 desterity and lots of HD
@DuckTapeal Next challenge is to build a level 13 pure bard able to solo the tarrasque. I don't think I can do that.
@Dane and the wizard still summons them

If the "null magic zone" is like an Anti-Magic Sphere, conjured things can enter it from outside, apart from summons.

@DuckTapeal intelligent squirrels are on Yggdrasyl. Sigil has brain rats.

I believe that a Planar Ally can enter an AMS...
Alchemical and poisonous things can be carried in from outside...

Lots of things can enter an AM field
but yeah, dead magic zones is the reason I can't set my mind on playing a wizard or a cleric gish. There's always this risk to get into a place where I'm less than useless.

How could I ask this as a good Question? I've got a hypothetical scenario: door-gate to and from Sigil into a plane that is entirely filled with the effects of an Anti-Magic Sphere. There is a big bad to kill and a MacGuffin to retrieve from several miles away from the door. What options does a party of level 11 wizards have for accomplishing this?
Even barbarians are hindered in Anti-Magic Spheres because all of their magic items are suppressed.
@Aaron I've got your Pathfinder build challenge for you: build me a level 11 wizard optimized for attacking opponents wearing Amulets of Permanent Anti-Magic Sphere.

9:03 PM
> I want my water-balloon-throwing fighter to be able to deal the same damage as a longbow-shooting fighter. Why does Pathfinder have trap options for some ranged characters?

Probably should include "Wall of Force" and "Wall of Iron" among known spells.

Favorited by EIGHT PEOPLE.
(In fairness, the first post telling him to stop being terrible was favorited by 13.)

9:28 PM
@Zachiel By "Pure Bard", what do you mean? No PRcs? Core only? No alternate songs? If it's core only, it'll be difficult, but you can probably do it with enough splatbooks.

9:40 PM
@DuckTapeal No prcs or multiclass.
I was thinking snowflake wardance and scrolls

2 hours later…
11:30 PM
I'm officially aiming at the reversal badge
This might be the only time I feel a question is ok but it's doomed to be downvoted a lot and my question actually solves the problem.
