9:00 AM
24 mins ago, by Lord_Gareth
"At high levels a monk should have enough magic items to make up for most of his deficiencies and you have more survivability than any other melee class going up against a caster, with the possible exception of ToB classes." <-OhgodwhatwhydidInotnoticethatbeforewhhhhhhyyyyyy

(Did we kill Brian?)

That one, i think.
Can you turn that into a question and answer?

I think so, as long as you don't mine the initial question being vague, followed by a highly specific answer.

Depends on what it is.

"Why do these persistent fallacies about melee in D&D 3.5 persist after 10+ years of play?"

9:02 AM
That sounds lecturey.

It sorta does, yeah.
But right now the other option my brain is giving me is sorta, ah, rude.

Try something more specific that can be answered yes or no, like "At higher levels, does magic item accumulation help balance martial and caster classes?"

To which the answer is "no, oh god no, don't make me laugh more I'll spit my lung out"
But that's not really the only issue in a tightly grouped family of common misconceptions about melee
I could talk about tanking, magic items, damage, versatility, and mobility without leaving "problems with melee" for a single second.

Which I would translate as "Not only do spellcasters gain power exponentially while martial classes do so quadratically, the spellcasters are also gathering items at an equal rate."
@Lord_Gareth I'd ask @BrianBallsun-Stanton first, but I suspect each of those could be acceptable as an individual tightly-focused Q&A.
(I tagged him so he'll come back and look.)

Do I need to actually parse it as a Q&A? Or should I just title the thread as the question and go sprinting with the answer?

9:07 AM
Well, the whole site is designed in the format that an individual asks a question and the community gives answers which the community then votes on.

Where this is more of an essay

But there is an option to ask a question to which you already know the answer, to help provide information to the community at large.
(And of course the community can provide their own answers and vote on them all.)
(and look at me, pretending I'm more than 48 hours away from my first answered-own-question post)

Which would mean that if I wanted to talk about the disproportionate use of wealth-by-level I would format it...how?

What's the answer you want to give?

I was intending on addressing first how picking up items at high levels helps stopgap some, but not all, of non-magical class weaknesses and then address how it doesn't match up to spellcasters, since the two are related but different beasts. Most published monsters aren't full casters.
But fullcasters ARE common villains, so they belong in that discussion
Since it's dealing with how it's a problem for PCs

9:11 AM
I'm imagining a question like "How useful are the wealth-by-level guidelines and what should I know about using them? with a sub-question like "what are alternatives to the wealth-by-level guidelines that I can use in my game?"

No, that wouldn't be it at all, mostly because WBL is one of those cases where there really is no fixing the problem.
"Can magical items overcome the failings of low-powered classes?" <-Potential?

Potential.
But avoid questions that promote lists.
(Unless the list is very short and has clearly-defined parameters AND is generally useful)

Such as a quick list of the obstacles weaker classes would try to overcome with those items
As opposed to a huge list of items that solve it

That might work.
I'd want to run it past a mod like Brian first though, as I'm still not comfortable with all the rule-of-thumb guidelines.

Okay, THAT'S how you do it
You drop the question in the OP then reply to yourself for the answer
I was horribly unclear about that
So I found your thread

9:14 AM
Ah, sorry. Yeah.
Actually when you first post a question there's a ticky-box at the bottom for answering it yourself, and you can create them simultaneously.
If you ask a question to which you later discover the answer, you drop an answer in like anybody else.

Alright, alright.
We appear to have lost our mod.
(Modsareasleeppostponies)

Let's not bother him again until we have something more fully formed.
@Lord_Gareth Keep that under wraps, we've got a couple people who get grumpy about pony proliferation.

Well, I need to get a define list of the problems melee has and how pertinent each one is.
(Sorry, I was just crackin' a joke. I have no ponies to post)

@Lord_Gareth No problem. (I do.)

So lemme think here.
Since I'm looking for a formalized list and not a giant rant where I have a few hours to eventually get there :p
I'd say the problems they face are as follows:

9:19 AM
haste, teleport, tenser's transformation, polymorph...

Mobile enemies, self-mobility, action economy, non-AC defenses, battlefield control, lack of out-of-combat utility, inferiority to monsters that dwell in a similar niche, and lack of answers to monstrous/magical panic buttons.

(improved invisibility, baleful polymorph...)

(You think too high-level. Grease will shut down a 20th level fighter if he can't fly)
Grease. First level spell)

I once shut down a level 26 fighter with lesser command.
Boss told him to give her his sword.

I once killed eight level 28 PCs with a single 17th level wizard who did nothing but drink martinis.

Rob
9:22 AM
Evening all

@Rob yawp!

But do you think that list that I put up, above, covers the sorts of things non-magical classes are trying or expected to solve with items
Heya Rob

Rob
D&D Wizard spells? Booya! What edition? :)

I haven't played 3.5 for a year and a half, and I was usually a GM back then, and I wasn't really into theorycraft.

Rob
My wizard just leveled in PF and trying to decide on two new level 2 spells

9:23 AM
Beware, Rob, for we speak of the yawning abyss that is 3.5
........
Must...remain...polite...

Rob
@Lord_Gareth Ahh the mighty realm of the splatbooks

Chokes back the nerd rage

@Rob @Lord_Gareth is trying to compose Q&As about understanding the pitfalls of 3.5.

@Rob - The three most broken books in 3.5 are the PHB, the DMG, and Core

@Lord_Gareth Here, breathe into this paper bag.

Rob
9:24 AM
@Lord_Gareth But at least everyone has those ones :)

EVERYTHING ELSE, and I mean EVERYTHING, is just gravy

Rob
/me ducks and covers

Sorry, PF is a bit of a berserker button on my end of the keyboard. I hate Paizo in ways most people reserve for, say, the man who killed their family at the start of the movie.

Rob
Blimey

@Lord_Gareth Yes, well. We've got plenty of people here who play 3.5 and PF while understanding perfectly well that they're seriously flawed systems.
They just happen to be overlookable flaws for their groups, for various reasons, in light of the benefits their groups do find in the systems.

9:26 AM
@BESW - My main issue with Paizo is not their sloppy and half-done work. It's their complete and utter lack of maturity and professionalism and the abusive tone that the designers take with their fans while they tromp around their forums like god-kings, banning anyone who dares to disagree with them.

I would return to 3.5 in a heartbeat if I had a group that it'd work for, like I did six years ago.

These are supposed to be paid professionals
Not six year olds on a playground.

@Lord_Gareth I think you might find that to be an unfortunately wide-spread misconception in many 'professional' arenas.

Rob
Ah righty; I've only ever breezed past their forums to pick up occasional threads

I'd play 3.5 if I could find a group or a PbP with a slower posting rate, but neither are really forthcoming.

As a player I prefer 4e, and as a GM it has its perks, but I'm really looking forward to FATE.

(My secondary issue with Paizo is that they promised to fix 3.5. On that promise I purchased their core books for PF. The store refused to give me my money back)

(I also really like MLWM conceptually, but the one attempt to play it bombed.)

Rob
I play freeforms by email, takes me back to my chatroom days...

@Lord_Gareth [snicker]

Rob
9:28 AM
@BESW MLWM?

@Rob My Life With Master. rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9681.phtml

Rob
Well; in Pazio's defence I like the updates and changes they made to the core classes and rules. IMO

But yes Rob, we weren't actually discussing spellcasters per se, but rather the attempts of melee to overcome their weaknesses with magical items

Rob
@BESW Ahhhh yes; heard of that one - one that needs the right group I suspect :)

You know what everyone should play at least once? Everyone is John.
Everyone is John is the best party game ever for roleplayers

Rob
9:30 AM
@BESW Have you seen Aye Dark Overlord? boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/18723/aye-dark-overlord

@Lord_Gareth I have EiJ in the back of the PC binder on a single sheet of paper, for players to occupy themselves with while I rejigger the campaign they've just broken.

Rob
@Lord_Gareth Not seen that one either

Incidentally Rob, if you're looking at spells I'd suggest Mirror Image

@Lord_Gareth Well, that would be a list question. We don't like those. Is there a common pattern?

9:32 AM
SPECTACULAR defense, and in PF it only gets beaten out by True Seeing
@Brian - There's a common pattern of the solutions not working, if that counts at all.

@Lord_Gareth nope

But I was going to use that list as examples of the problems

The trick is a question that has standing
standing is very very important for us
A real problem that you face, that has an objective (or strong subjective) answer.

@BrianBallsun-Stanton [waits for definition link with bated breath]

Rob
EIJ Looks like a nice simple fun game :)

9:33 AM
@BESW urr?

Rob
@Lord_Gareth Good suggestion; I'm considering that and Levitation.

@Brian - Well, the thing is that this represents a solved problem for /me/, but looking through the threads and answers of the community it doesn't seem to be a solved problem for /them/

A: Asking for one media is fine, another not so much...

Brian Ballsun-StantonMy problems with the sound effect library question: Due Diligence and standing. @BrianBallsun-Stanton There it is.

@Lord_Gareth Well, but how did you solve it? Why did you solve it? Why did you respond that way?

9:34 AM
@Lord_Gareth Consider your Q&A as a little narrative RP of yourself from the past asking yourself now for help on this issue.

oh no, a stealth question
notit!

Rules of Hidden Club?

Well, the problem relates to the player. [Classes] have that list of problems, which require solutions. The player seeks solutions to those problems (this is where the problem I'm addressing starts) and comes to magical items as the solution, and unfortunately they're NOT a solution

@BESW yeaaap. With framing for a first timer dealing with original phb.

but here they're being billed as such

9:36 AM
@Lord_Gareth So where was this the case in your past?

@BrianBallsun-Stanton I can do that! But after I've made and cleaned up from dinner.

@BESW awesome.

@Brian - Can I get that again in a different form of English?

@BrianBallsun-Stanton You know I'm that guy.
@Lord_Gareth Tell us about when you first encountered this problem.

Rob
@BESW Have you just rolled out a couch?

9:37 AM
...Well, I could wax poetic about the paladin character I had who broke his shield, threw away his holy symbol and retired in disgust but that's more dramatic than helpful.

@Rob No, I prefer the "walking through a park" chat.
@Lord_Gareth Okay, so don't wax poetic when you tell us about him.

I suppose realizing it was a combination of years of practical experience and doing the research
Learning about the system the hard way

We're not asking about the solution yet.
When/how did this become a problem?

I know you're not.
I realized a lot of PROBLEMS with 3.5 on the theoretical level before I saw them manifest on the practical one.
Because I had a very insular group
Once I opened that group up, they came flooding in like the curses in Pandora's Box
(I regret nothing)

Rob
Also; hi @BrianBallsun-Stanton or rather G'day.

9:42 AM
If that makes sense at all? I mean, I don't really have a defining moment or incident when I went, "My god, I can't teleport!"

@Rob ::roasts gently in your general direction::
@Lord_Gareth Mmmm, personally, I'd wait a bit before going down this path.

@Rob - I'd skip out on Levitate. Web or Summon Monster II would both serve you much better.

Rob
@BrianBallsun-Stanton We have a week of horrible freezing weather coming; dooooh.

Try your hand at answering some of the questions on the site, get a feel for what makes agood question and a good answer.

Never underestimate the ability to tell your enemy that there are places he is not allowed to go

9:43 AM
@Rob We were at 43 today. ::shudder:: ::melt::

@Lord_Gareth It feels like you have more things to say about why 3.5 is as broken as it is, than you have to offer guidance or solutions.

Rob
@Lord_Gareth SM2 I already have, fine spell; Web is a good idea too... Glitterdust is my favourite L2 atm, if every monster every hadn't saved against it every time I cast it

Ouch. Got any way to pump your DC, man?

Rob
@BrianBallsun-Stanton Holy moley. Wildfire problems down there right now, right? Hope alls safe!

@BESW I'd recommend framing all of this in blog posts first. It sounds like a poor fit for Q&A.

9:44 AM
I'm sure you have a lot of guidance and solutions in you, but I think @BrianBallsun-Stanton is right that at least at first you should allow it to bubble up organically.

@Rob different state, but yes.

I think the reason it comes across that way is I'm trying to teach system mastery rather than system solutions.
HOW to solve problems rather than the solution itself

Rob
Vodka and jackhammers. Solves most problems.

@Lord_Gareth I'd recommend a series of explanatory blog posts about that.

@BrianBallsun-Stanton Sweet Lord Solaris on a stick, man!
@BrianBallsun-Stanton I'd read those.

9:45 AM
@BESW Yep. Pelor of the burning hate has gazed upon this country today.
@BESW So would I.

@BrianBallsun-Stanton Of course, I come from a place where over 35 is considered wrothful.

@BESW most wrothful

Testing
Can anyone hear me?

@Lord_Gareth Indeed.

'Kay, computer threatened to disconnect

9:50 AM

I think I may have offended the pasta gods.

Evidently loading the PF SRD screwed up my bandwidth or something
had to look at an ability wording to answer a question

Rob
Hmmm, looking like mirror image and web, or maybe summon swarm...

@Lord_Gareth it occurs to me that you might have ideas about this question:
4
Q: How can I convert monsters from 4e back to 3.5?

LitheOhmFor Christmas this year, I got the Monster Manual Three. Only problem is, this one is for 4e and I play almost exclusive 3.5. However, I started flipping through the pages anyway out of curiosity. I've barely heard of some of these monsters, and a others I've never heard of. The tulgar? I like t...

@BESW - Oh god.
I wouldn't even know
Where to start.
Because the way monsters work between the two editions is SO different
Like, even the basic paradigm
Of how to define the creature
Is wholly separate
Oh, heya Mr. Hobbs

@JonathanHobbs If you don't want me to snipe your Hidden Club answer out from under you, you'll have to add a discussion of the rules changes. That guy's using the PHB, poor man.

10:05 AM
@BESW - Curse you for a foul tempter you have me answering the monster thread.

@BESW I don't know much more to say other than "things have changed"

@JonathanHobbs The Fairy Nuff will snipe your answer if it thinks of something good to say.

Rob
The more answers the merrier :)

@Rob - Backed you up on the fortification thing.

@BESW The Fairy Nuff is welcome to do so.

10:10 AM
@Lord_Gareth I knew you'd have something to say.

The "They're not bonuses!" thing was irksome in the EXTREME

Rob
@Lord_Gareth Huzah, cheers :) I did re-read my answer after they posted, but re-examining the rules; I stand by me.

@Lord_Gareth If I were feeling exceptionally generous and benevolent I might houserule that if some poor sap spent their money that way they'd get to roll twice.

@BESW - That'd be more powerful than the 50%
Stat-math wise, anyway

@JonathanHobbs I've generally expected the DDI Compendium to be the most up-to-date, but the Rules Compendium has some obviously better wordings that don't change the meaning, just make it clearer. Sigh.

Rob
10:16 AM
Two 25% get you a net 44% chance, much cheaper than a 50% item (0.25 + 0.75*0.25)

@JonathanHobbs Extra +1 for errata link.
I think I'm officially out-answered.

@BESW Yeah I realised leaving it as-is would leave him just going "Oh." and staring at his PHB and wondering how useless and irrelevant it is. And then I remembered that isn't the case. Errata!
> This is why, for example, the Monk AC bonus does not stack with the Swordsage AC bonus - despite coming from two different sources and having subtly different rules text, they're both named 'AC bonus' and as a result do not stack. -- @Lord_Gareth

Rob
Hmmmm; looking at the spells for a control based 3.5/PF Wizard, seems to me that ultimately your goal is to have AOE based control spells that target as many different saving throw types as possible (principally will as it's usually the hardest to increase) so you can lock down different enemy types....

@Rob - You also want save-or-sucks, save-or-loses, and no-save-just-suck effects

@Lord_Gareth 4e has the concept of typed and untyped bonuses, wherein for any type of bonus, only the highest bonus of that type applies. If you have two bonuses, a +2 and a +4 Necrotic Bonus to Damage, only the +4 applies. But with untyped bonuses (e.g. "+1 Bonus to AC" with no type specified, unlike "Reflex Bonus to AC"), untyped bonuses always stack.

10:22 AM
Such as Hideous Laughter, Hold Person, Color Spray, Irresistable Dance, Forcecage....

Is 3.5e different?

Rob
@Lord_Gareth Color spray is a low level lovely

@Lord_Gareth Your fortification answer is really just an addendum to Rob's. It'd probably be better as a comment to his post, which someone can then edit into his answer if they like it.

@Jonathan - 3.5 ALSO has typed bonuses and untyped bonuses. HOWEVER, the 'source name' rules is in addition to the rules about bonus types.

Rob
@Lord_Gareth I'll be getting ray of exhaustion as soon as I can

10:23 AM
@BESW Either way works really.

Rob
@Lord_Gareth But yes, agree entirely :)
The character is a controller/buffer

@JonathanHobbs No (3.5 isn't different), but untyped bonuses are as rare as balanced martial classes.
Also both 3.5 and 4e have the source name caveat.

POSTED IN THE MONSTER THREAD
WITH GREAT POSTING

READING IT NOW.

/me massages his wrists

10:27 AM
@BESW Ok, I don't understand that caveat. I've never encountered it. Care to explain?

@JonathanHobbs Now that I've opened my mouth, let me fill it with sources. brb.

> Untyped Bonus: Some bonuses have no type (“a +2 bonus,” for instance). Most of these bonuses are situational and combine with other bonuses, including other untyped bonuses. However, untyped bonuses from the same named game element (such as a power or a feat) are not cumulative; only the highest applies, unless otherwise noted.
I don't understand this, since you can have multiple untyped bonuses from feats, and multiple untyped bonuses from two sides of a hybrid class. Right?

Rob
Linky to mega post?

@Jonathan - It's talking about, specifically, two things with the same name

A: How can I convert monsters from 4e back to 3.5?

Lord_GarethThere is no easy or good way to do this. Which doesn't mean there's NO way to do this, mind you. It's just that it's going to be a rough and toothy thing on you. I'm afraid the proposed answer involving shaving the defenses and the like is more of a stop-gap solution than it is a long-term way t...

Rob
10:29 AM
Ta @JonathanHobbs

Like, let's speak hypothetically for a moment

[sits back and reads monster post, lets the Goblin King explicate bonuses]

Say you have a feat called Master of Punching Faces that gives a +1 bonus to attack rolls, and then you pick up a class feature called Master of Punching Faces that gives a +1 bonus to attack rolls.
These do not stack because they have the same ability name
Now, if the feat was instead named Master of Kicking Shins
Then the game would just see two untyped bonuses, add them together and call it a day

Rob
@Lord_Gareth I do like the last instruction :)

Ah, so they have to be very careful with naming things I guess. Ok, that makes total sense: you can't get two bonuses from Fortification because they're the same game element, and it's not Shield Fortification and Armor Fortification, it's just Fortification.

10:32 AM
Precisely.
And I forgot something small for the monster thing
So edit incoming.

Ok, well that makes yours an excellent answer.

@JonathanHobbs You'll also occasionally find something like, forex, a power that grants an untyped bonus to the target's next skill check.
Two different powers that do this would stack, but two characters using the same power on the same target would not find their buffs stacking.

I didn't upvote Rob since... well, it's not a modifier. But you're drawing from a different rule which is quite relevant and excellent.

Rob
"Fairy nuff" as I believe the saying goes.

Shit, my link didn't work in the monster post.
How do I code links on this board?

10:36 AM
@Lord_Gareth I kept trying to pull the alignment system out of 3.5, but the backbone came out of the system with it every time.

@BESW - It's easier than one thinks sometimes.
You just have to be prepared to get elbow-deep in the blood of black and white morality
And also ban a TON of spells

@Lord_Gareth It's in Markdown format. There's a good explanation behind the help question mark on the answer screen.
Also, hi :)

[texthere][1]

I think my brain just fizzled a bit.
I don't suppose I could beg the local-and-present Illustrious Mod to fix da link?

I'll do it.

10:38 AM
@Lord_Gareth you could :)
but I recommend using the "edit" button :)

@Lord_Gareth See the Editing Help

I believe in empowering my bloody users cause I'm not your parent :)

Rob
Awww dad
ahem

@Lord_Gareth I'll fix it this time, and then you go press the edit button and see what I did.

It shall be done.

10:40 AM
@Lord_Gareth I have had some amazing discussions with people who have a hard time separating a fictional moral paradigm from their IRL ideas about morality. Which is understandable but makes any talking about the Axis of Lawful Stupid moot.

I see, thank you.

@Lord_Gareth Going way back though, you might be interested to know that FATE Core and the quickstart edition will be released under a pay what you want model after the kickstarter ends. You can also get access to the pre release materials by pledging a dollar and then taking back the pledge (it won't take any money out of your account).

Plus there's the problem where the designers couldn't be consistent about any kind of alignment-based issue either. There's some telling shit that the best alignment books published were Heroes of Horror, Champions of Ruin and the two Fiendish Codexes
BoED and BoVD just aren't worth consulting about it.
At all.
Man I hope my answer is actually helpful. Seeing "There's no good way to do this," in bold at the top has GOT to be a little discouraging.

@SimonGill [Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet] Good point well made; I hadn't thought that through. [/Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet]
@Lord_Gareth "There is no formula for this."

Ew, too euphemistic
Trying to be honest for the poor man
the two systems were not designed for compatibility

10:45 AM
Okay, "good" is subjective. I think your bullet points are a good way to do it.
Just say there's no easy/simple/formulaic way to do it.

@Lord_Gareth Isn't there some way to build off the 4E monster skeleton, look for the distinctive features of that monster and then use those against a 3.5 monster skeleton?

@Lord_Gareth My jaw drops every time I see 3.5 try to make any use of objective morality.

@SimonGill - There ISN'T a 3.5 monster skeleton
Is the thing
A rat, a paladin, a fighter, a demon, an angelic prince, and a god all use the same basic stat paradigm

@SimonGill That's kind of like saying "Well, can't you rebuild this chicken from that arthropod?"

They all have hit dice, feats, ability scores, ability score increases, alignments, special abilities, etc, etc
Many even have class levels in the SAME KINDS of classes

10:48 AM
@Lord_Gareth That's the same thing in 4E.

There's a word... hurph. My brain is dead.

No, 4e has a sharp divide between 'this is a player' and 'this is not a player'
Even shopkeepers or town guards get 'monster' stats
3.5 has NO divide between 'this is a player' and 'this is not a player'
The divide is between 'this is a creature' and 'this is an object'
if it has a Wis and Cha score, it's officially a creature

@Lord_Gareth I didn't say anything about players. There are generic monster skeletons that give you base stats for something in a certain role at a certain level.

Not that I've ever found. Certainly none in first-party material.
WotC never supported homebrew overmuch.

At the risk of tooting my own horn, I consider myself to have been an above-average NPC-builder in both systems. Here's the difference as I see it: In 3.5 you begin with what a creature is and from that you discover what it can do; in 4e you build around a creature's capabilities.

10:51 AM
@Lord_Gareth It's in one of the 4E core books - it worked fantastic for improvised monsters.

3.5 has no such skeleton, is my point.
There's no guide to creating creatures.

@Lord_Gareth Well. SS?

Well, there IS. It's six paragraphs in the DMG full of the worst advice you'd never want to take even at gunpoint.
@BESW - That's for converting a monster to a class
And is also something you wouldn't want to do, even at gunpoint

@SimonGill 4e monsters are built from their meta role outward. 3.5 monsters are built from their racial type outward.
The 3.5 'skeleton' is the creature type and subtype, which provides nothing informative about its meta role.

Nor any abilities except a few vision modes and weapon proficiencies

10:54 AM
@BESW Arrg, two different threads of conversation. The point was to compare the monster to the generic skeleton to get an idea of what makes it distinctive (kobolds got Shifty, some get less hit points and more damage, others the other way round) and using that to build on top of a generic 3.5 monster.

@Simon - What we're saying is there IS NO generic 3.5 monster
There's none. You'd have to MAKE ONE first

@SimonGill The best you could do is to see if there's a pre-existing 3.5 monster with similar abilities, but in nearly every case there won't be.

@Lord_Gareth That's the other thread. I want to be clear that we're taking the distinctiveness from 4E first.

@Lord_Gareth I'm reading your answer again.

Rob, you have no idea how close I came to spewing a ream of useless advice in your wizard AC thread because I forgot it was PF.
>.>

10:57 AM
Unfortunately, you basically just outlined the 3.5 creature creation process.

Preeeeeetty much
I've made one 3.5e monster, and it was years ago
And I'm pretty sure I screwed them up
So I'm not really the guy to ask
Kryan knows a few people that could be helpful, but there's the slight problem of them hating 4e fluff with the burning fury of ten billion dying suns

Can you reduce the "how to 3.5"ness, as that's not the question being asked, and maybe make suggestions about converting common 4e concepts to 3.5 terms?

I could...if I knew any common 4e concepts.

Does it make sense that we're looking at the 4E strike, seeing that it's got, say, a ranged basic attack that's a fireball and that's the only thing that's different from a generic striker of its level?

But the "how to 3.5" part isn't redundant there, I'd say, because most players/DMs don't really dabble in design a lot.
And while it seems obvious to you or I who do design on a regular basis
