@mxyzplk no but it is one of my complaints with doing adveristiemnt in person...its hard to say

I think the concept that a lot of people are hearing about us and then forgetting the URL between when they hear and the Internet are... ill founded

I don't know how much money it would take to get in the Gencon goodie bag or what the deadline is.

@mxyzplk we want an url to put on a small item...

No one remembers URLs any more anyway. What we need is SEO so someone googles RPG.SE and we come up first.

In a perfect world, STICKERS!

8:01 PM
Anyone showing up to PAX East, by the way?

@mxyzplk (my complaint is a general network wide thing, RPG.stackexchange.com isn't too bad...its some of the others that are a pain)

Pax is a good one. East or West.

Could we even just do a business card like thing?

@waxeagle Sure, just saying we have 90% problems to worry about first

@mxyzplk sure. this is a 1% kind of problem...

8:02 PM
@Aether I think our general process is that we don't make business cards for sites still in Beta, but sometimes we might make exceptions and especially with a strong plan it wouldn't hurt. It'll be like the dice bags, though - no guarantees.

Laters, gonna eat cake now. Star me if you want a slice :]

Firing an email over to one of the guys at PA regarding PAX might be interesting. Generally things they take a personal interest in get promoted. Not sure if that's worth trying.

@MadMAxJr no way...boston is right out for me...I'm not even sure ATL for dragon con will work this year...

@GraceNote Actually, I was thinking more like a design that we could get printed ourselves?

*) only virtual slices available tho...

8:03 PM
Just something to take along to gaming groups/conventions/whatever.

@Aether That'll be a lot easier, like what we did with SciFi. I can see what we can do.

AFAIK all cons are in the US
except baycon but that's for board games

There are a few over here, PF.

Yeah, over in the UK, you tend to have that one 'everything' con, don't you?

@MadMAxJr I will be at PAX East myself, as it were.

8:04 PM
I think, anyway. :/

I forget what it's called...

@Aether any near Bristol?

@MadMAxJr isn't there a UK gencon

@GraceNote As a guest/sponsor/vendor?

@MadMAxJr Guest, pleasure.

8:05 PM
I think the one I remember seeing was in Cambridge.
So no, not really.

Will be going with my brother and a few of my friends. ♪

There's a smaller con I rather enjoy that keeps growing. Magfest. But they're mostly videogames / video game music bands.

@Aether I could still make that though....

@MadMAxJr I like to head to Genericon, myself.

8:06 PM
@Pureferret congenial.org.uk

We generally don't have cons out here in the midwest, so lots of travel if I want to do anything.

@Aether I'll put soem ideas up on my local gaming site

@MadMAxJr Gencon is in Indy, not too far away...

It isn't but registration is soon unfortunately.

@MadMAxJr I'd imagine so...not something I've looked into...

8:08 PM
That's a days drive from here.
Hmm.
Actually, I need to ping my local game shop owner. We went together in '09, I need to see what his plans are.. If I split the costs, it suddenly goes from 'not possible' to 'maybe, if you eat ramen for a month'
Plus, I think it would be nice to have some representation from the site on the floor at WOTCs 5e panel, which I'm sure will happen.

Mmmm, raman

Do we know how the playtesting is going to work for 5e?

@Aether ask the stack ;)
I think I could answer that

@Aether Great question. I'm going to sign up :)...

tag it with game-design/game-industry
@waxeagle point me will you?

8:16 PM
@Pureferret someone said something about signups on the wizards site...checking now on mobile...

::grumblegrumblegrumble::

sweet
@BrianBallsunStanton Sup!

vague answer on my necro question. I need justification to downvote.

Worried about having to memorize a whole new host of books?

www.wizards.com/dndnext

8:17 PM
oh wow, we have people in this room
what?
5e? What?

yeah, even fancy high up people, @GraceNote

oooh, did something explode?

@BrianBallsunStanton just announced today.

@BrianBallsunStanton 5E hinted at.

cause normally gracenote only comes in with modflags... not that I have... any.... um...
er?

8:18 PM
newbiedm.com/2012/01/09/a-new-edition-of-dd-is-coming/

okay, I'm just going to chalk today down to "surreal"

lol clipboard contents are sometimes...strange

oh, blind clipboard pastes are um...

Oh, Brian, and we have a Stack employee in here with us today to put icing on the cake.

8:19 PM
@BrianBallsunStanton Haha, admittedly I did come from the Lounge but that's because I started chatting up with C.Ross and others about DnD and decided I should get out from there to do it.

'lo

Not that I've got flashbacks to um... the Back Room or anything :)

At this rate we're going to hit peak activity for the chat room.

@GraceNote Whoa! Geez, I step away from the computer for 30 minutes.

8:19 PM
I know

All that's left is for Jeff Atwood to come in and offer cake and punch.

ooooh! Cake!

Q: How will the play testing for D&D 5th Edition work?

AetherWith the announcement today that Wizards of the Coast are working on the 5th edition of Dungeons and Dragons, there has been a lot of buzz about open play testing. In addition, there is the ability to sign up for the play testing. How will the play testing work? Will it be similar to video gam...

Edit away!
(And answer, of course)

8:21 PM
wow, I'm really tempted to VtC that.

@PatLudwig Oh, snap, that was supposed to be a surprise, too.

I'm not sure there's a definitive answer to that.

All the facts we have to go on for 5e so far is a single press release.
The rest is blogs, a few of which were from people who got to playtest and commented they are not permitted to comment.

@GraceNote I noticed you didn't @ me, got lucky to see it :)

Q: How can we use gaming conventions to advertise RPG.SE?

PureferretIt came up in chat, and lots of ideas were fired around. I thought we could do with nailing some of those down and voting on them. How can we use gaming conventions to advertise RPG.SE?

@MadMAxJr yet.

@BrianBallsunStanton If it doesn't fit the site, close away.
@MadMAxJr There might not be a definitive answer yet, but presumably there will be at some point?

I sort of see Aether's point but I am unsure how the site is meant to handle that.

Fair 'nuff. I threw my vote in. I'll probably try to answer if I know anything and it hasn't been closed.

8:23 PM
Honestly, any answer on that question that can't show evidence should probably be scrubbed.

@MadMAxJr Would that indicate a meta-question?

yes
I actually think that it's an excellent meta question
"what kind of discussion about 5e hype is allowed"

@PatLudwig It was intentional!

@BrianBallsunStanton I was thinking of the "unanswerable right now " aspect.

@Aether oh, mmm.
that's also good :)
most things are, mate. :)
wow, huge population.

8:29 PM
@GraceNote now I'm going to have to search the archives dang it

wow, it feels so dirty downvoting answers.
I mean, I know we need to do it more often, but...

I do it all the time

@BrianBallsunStanton come to the dark side Brian!

Stick with a down vote and try to dangle the carrot in the comment
It seems to work

@Pureferret oh, I always comment my downvotes.
@PatLudwig hey, only one dark side is allowed to tempt me at a time!

8:31 PM
@BrianBallsunStanton but I phrase mine as "It would be better if..."
or I try to

@BrianBallsunStanton pick the darkside with the best cookies.

@BrianBallsunStanton It's almost always useful
Nothing worse than having a down voted answer, and not having a clue what was wrong with it.

@Aether +1
and edited my question to clairify.

"WOC TO RELEASE SNAKES & LADDERS 2.5!!!"

8:33 PM
but yeah system tagged answers with system agnostic answers annoy me.
gah

@BrianBallsunStanton make that bit clear then

Q: How do we deal with questions that are currently unanswerable, but will have answers in the future?

AetherI asked a question about D&D 5th Ed, but since it has only just been announced, details are scarce, and so it doesn't seem to have a definitive answer at the moment. However, more information should be released in the next few months such as to make it an answerable question. How should we d...

Okay, I'm failing at chat. Time to go do some real work.

Wow, that snake and ladders article is dripping with snarkyness.

@MadMAxJr pouring with it

Q: How do I get my dresden files players involved in city creation?

TetraI've tried to involve them in city creation a few times through the course of the game, usually whenever they start finishing up a story arc & such; but I usually just kinda get a few shrugs and not even a question about anything I suggest when they go silent and shrug even when forewarned it...

@MadMAxJr link
@TheOracle wow, I don't think I've seen this many new questions in a while

yeah, today was... active.
I actually had to scroll to see activity. How odd.

@CRoss chat volume leads to q volume? althouhg a lot of folks haven't been in chat...

and we have people in the chatroom!

chat has been busy too
@waxeagle that is part of it
really I think excitement leads to question volume

@CRoss well the RPG world got excited today....

@GraceNote what's the standard response to questions about future events?

@waxeagle true

I think I put a few posts over at ENWorld about this site....

@CRoss Momentious

and over 5 q/day for the first time in a long time

8:44 PM
When we first got started, I almost considered advertising in the WORST place possible.
Thankfully it's a bannable offense over there to advertise, I didn't know that at the time.

@waxeagle we've been nudging the line since recovering from Christmas though

@CRoss true

@MadMAxJr holy smokes that's crass

@CRoss yeah a bit

thank you for reminding me what I don't miss about college

8:48 PM
Honestly not sure where the opposition to new editions is coming from. I know we've invested in old editions, but honestly its the best way for a company to make money and it's a way to generate buzz in the industry

I think it's the right time for 5e
4e is complete and playable
more releases are really stretching it right now..

@BrianBallsunStanton this. I think one of the major questions is what happens with DDI subs and the online tools...

(see? Work? That thing I'm doing)

@BrianBallsunStanton I imagine it's going to be a little like 3.5

@waxeagle See, now that's a good question

8:49 PM
@BrianBallsunStanton yeah, they got to that point with 3.5, where they just kept rolling out ... stuff

@BrianBallsunStanton should I ask the site?

yeah
@waxeagle mmmmm. depends on how "future questions" goes on meta.

@waxeagle, @BrianBallsunStanton this site or the WotC one?

@Pureferret this. WotC will just be frothing piranha pool.

@BrianBallsunStanton k will wait for meta clearance.

8:51 PM
@BrianBallsunStanton fair enough

but we've got a meta on future questions, but it would be an excellent draw.

I think CW is the way forward
@BrianBallsunStanton ?

@Pureferret ... okay, for that I need a flamethrower.

Mwahaha

@Pureferret great way to get views in, if our meta-q on future questions resolves.

8:52 PM
stop and think though, a CW would let people who find out new info put it all in one place. The CW should be a giant "If you want to post information like this, edit it in here"
@BrianBallsunStanton It also stops a forum like discussion on the Q

oh, CW should be great. But is infernal in practice.
Never saw a CW on this site, question or answer, amount to anything.

CW should generally be discouraged, but if there are valid uses for it, this could well be one.

In other news, thoughts on this: rpg.stackexchange.com/a/11764/2788

see, I prefer that better answers be rewarded with upvotes.

Was I off? Was it not helpful?

8:55 PM
community just means that no-one's going to edit it.

@BrianBallsunStanton same about the votes
community should mean edit me!
2

@Pureferret um, 4e + simulation = wtf.
it doesn't
because people don't get any reward for doing so

For sad ::(
I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I try to do Simulation in D&D, that is my reward.

@Pureferret ... and the men in the clean white coats are coming to take you away...

8:57 PM
bad answer for 4e. Good answer for other systems. (Actually have a Q bouncing around my mind that that would be an excellent answer to)

I step away for a coffee and there's 44 unread in here
Holy cow

about travel speeds in Ars Magica.

Given all this 5e chat, I'm curious what's going on over at Paizo offices today.

@MadMAxJr mmmm
they've got a good thing with pathfinder. If 5e hones in on it, you mean?

I would /love/ to see an advert that said something to the ring of, "This edition is still good, so we're going to keep making it."

8:59 PM
heh. yeah
Mind you, I don't agree, but...
mmm
I dunno, I'm not sure when I soured on 3.5

I would just like to see them poke WOTC is all, not necessarily my personal sentiment.
