@mxy Here we go again...

Things were too quiet around here

yep.
I thought you were asking a different question with your title
how do I stop instigators from pissing on the mafia don's couch would be how I interpreted it.
::shudder::
that was a bad game...
to be accurate.
Only at gencon...

Yeah, that's a slightly different but related flavor of it, the rapid escalation
I wanted to talk about the impatience in general this time

it's the "I'm bored, I'm going to break the world"
mmm, are all of your PCs like this?

That's a good question too.
Some more than others, but it does seem to be a chronic problem over the years - cross groups. Some individuals are more amenable to the explanation that "just saying "time passes" is as fast in game as saying "I head out immediately," so what's the problem?"

2:55 AM
mmm
well, I've been burned by time sometimes.

But in general I think that (Ars Magica aside) there's a sense of everpresent haste

yes.
Very much ars magica aside.
And I think it's because groups grow used to doomsday clocks.

ArM avoids that but only by a very specific set of assumptions hard encoded in

See, the way I'd do it is go "Oh, we don't actually stock most items. Feel free to order one"
it'll be ready in X seasons.
well, ArM has significant time pressure, just not on the day-to-day scale.

Yeah. So like I say, some of it is reasonable - army guy on leave, sailor in port, cowboy passing through town - they hit it hard

2:57 AM
most players who think about it try to become immortal ASAP
yes. And most towns will certainly have some sundries stockpiled, depending on the tech-level.
but armorers don't do the whole "inventory" thing, mosttimes, if I remember the economics of it right.

But there is a real sense of frustration from the players and I don't like them to feel frustrated (although I reject all the 4e/narrativist wish fulfillment player empowerment culture)

mmm. what system?

All. Pathfinder in my current campaign, but I've seen it happen in SF games too

mmm
slightly more credible in SF games, especially with realistic printing tech
I'd honestly ask them to stop, OOC.
it kind of feels like they've had trust violated in the past, so they always act on the clock

Q: How do I stop my PCs from acting like insomniac monkeys on crack?

mxyzplkAn issue came up in the last session of my Pathfinder campaign - that of chronic PC impatience. It happens especially when they go to cities and between adventures. They go into a frenzy of trying to buy and sell and talk to everyone and do everything to the point where I have to start enforcing...

3:03 AM
I dunno. I think dealing with shopping IC is boring most games.
but then again I'm... remarkably narrativist/gamist

3:17 AM
scrub, scrub, scrub the comments.

Q: What resources could I use for jewelry reference in D&D

PaulI am playing a character in a Dungeons and Dragons game. We are using a mix of 3 and 3.5 rule set. My character's craft is jewelery,so I need some reference to: what jewelry costs to make what it might sell for how I should handle the jewelry making process.

Q: When is a shield wall a viable tactic?

PureferretI've often seen people try to for small (3-4 people) shield walls and it falls apart. From this I'd have to guess that it's not a viable tactic, at least not in those number. When is it a viable tactic, and how do you make it worth forming?

A: When is a shield wall a viable tactic?

C. RossShield walls were typically formed with units of dozens of trained soldiers. They are a formation that takes excellent discipline, and more than one rank. If you're attempting a shield wall with only one rank, don't expect it to last very long. The second rank is necessary because when one of ...

needs touching up ...

How so?

@Pureferret it reads as a little contradictory

It reads to me as "It needs lots of people, and needs lots of effort to make work"

@Pureferret that's the gist

The only issue I have is it doesn't relate to larp so well, how do I apply your advice to larp?

1:52 PM
unless you have a very narrow point to defend
@Pureferret how big are your larps?
and how often do people train together?
and what rule set are you using?

Anywhere between 8 and 30 people. The LARP is weekly, with about 4 out of 5 being part of a contigious plot

boffer weapons and no head shots?

Yeah 'boffer'
no stabs
head hits greatly discouraged

@Pureferret that makes it hard too, since historically shield walls used pokies (long or short spears)
let me read through your rules and see
but I think your biggest problem is the small numbers
it just doesn't work with four people

Hmm
fair enough
Right I'm off to work on my report
Seeya later

How is everyone?

4:51 PM
woot

That's pretty good

Now am at the Cuban bakery picking up game treats! We try to finish off Jade Regent chapter 1 today.

Cool :D
What treats do you have?

6:20 PM
@mxyzplk how is that path?

6:37 PM
@Pureferret oddly enough the rule book leaves out how shields actually work, besides breaking
do they work in the normal mechanical way

?
A hit to a shield that doesn't break does not damage to a character
if that's what you mean?

basically
and they have to interpose the shield regularly

Yeah
how else would it work?

@Pureferret not sure, not a big larper

Thats cool

6:53 PM
@Pureferret and it had nitpicky rules about everything else :-)
it's interesting, it's some % your characters stats (on paper) and some % your own skills
you do your characters damage, but you've got to land the blow first
so your character could be BA but if you're no good ...

Yup
It makes some of the players feared ooc
We've had to tell some members "No, Zombies don't fence that well"

@Pureferret :-D
yeah, I played D&D with martial artists, Heavy Fighters, and fencers in college
every one of them could take me OoC

7:17 PM
Thoughts on this, @CRoss rpg.stackexchange.com/a/11759/2788

7:37 PM
@Pureferret I don't know enough larpers to say
but I would say there's a lot of other people in the intersection who aren't larpers :-)

...yet
Also the link to jvas answer
thoughts?

@Pureferret meh
not flag-worthy if that's what you're asking

Oh no
if I thought it was I'd flag it
my first thought was after one of jva's comments was, whether or not they were one of @mxyzplk's players
it just seems very unhelpful an answer

2 hours later…
9:43 PM
@Pureferret I think it's just a philosophical disagreement
those happen

True

jva seems to be the that thinks the GM's sole job is making the game fun/rewarding for the players

Q: Large weapons in a small forest

PureferretMy main LARP character has a honking great 6'6" Dire Mace as his paladin weapon (Read; attuned to so cannot be replaced with a smaller weapon). Our LARPs are commonly in small forested areas making proper dramatic swings difficult. I've tried to accompany the large weapon with a smaller sword at ...

@CRoss I don't think that's quite right, everyone should have fun

Q: I am the best? Or am I?

PureferretCan anyone explain why I'm top ranked for 'All time highest Rep', when I'm clearly not the highest?

Q: Where can I buy larp-safe pyrotechnics?

PureferretI'm looking for something to visually represent non-combat fire magic. It needs to be small enough to carry discretely, short range (to reduce the risk of setting people on fire), cool (compared to some flames) and reasonably cheap. Is such a thing possible?

Q: Best way to make a ritual convincing and evocative?

PureferretMost LARP systems feature an option for ritual magic; Long drawn out magic scenes involving a variety of actions, words and props, as well as having to fit to specific timings (longer rituals for greater effects). What is the best way to make such a ritual stand out and be noticed as 'magical', ...

@PatLudwig I'm sure that wasn't always the case...

@Pureferret not always, but I'm guessing 6+ months

Oh, I'm sure I've had to hunt through to see my rank before
strange

@Pureferret when?

maybe as that was my first month? Or that it's a new quarter?
A week or so ago

11:13 PM
@Pureferret it's been much longer than that
If you are on that page, then you have to page through
as opposed to here

That may have been it...

as opposed to the league page where you are always on top.
I don't see the change noted on the list so I'm not sure when it was made. Months ago though, I'm sure of it

Fair enough :)

Q: How can I add underworld intrigue to my dfrpg game?

TetraIn D&D/PF/Rifts/Shadowrun type games I've played in the past, corrupt nobles/merchants, thieves guilds guilds, megacorps, ancient evils, and various religions with a flakey axe to grind, were all easy to just plug in without disturbance to the world's credibility. Dresden Files RPG is sup...

Bam
got that one
