Aug 18, 2011 20:01

Aug 18, 2011 19:06

the funny thing is if they dare to try, there could be girls with posters with Stephen's face
Mar 14, 2011 19:38

Mar 14, 2011 19:34
the most strange things about Ulysses are ideas to make a movie on it
Mar 14, 2011 19:33
@RegDwight look forward to. I'm waiting for having my leg broken or something to read Ulysses in one turn
Mar 14, 2011 19:31
@RegDwight I haven't heard about his translations of the "wake"
Mar 14, 2011 19:30
actually, translations of Ulysses seem worse to me. the ones I've seen is just a russian text with reference numbers above every other word, and all notes go into the very end of a book
Mar 14, 2011 19:28
@Robusto there is an english version on the left page, a russian translation with comments and variants on the right side. not so futile, I enjoyed a few first pages
Mar 14, 2011 19:17
Mar 14, 2011 19:16
GNU license. that explains that
Mar 14, 2011 19:14
doesn't seem like fail to me
Mar 14, 2011 19:12
one of my friends have been translating "finnegans wake"
Mar 14, 2011 19:11
maybe "sail"
Mar 14, 2011 19:10
but I believe that being a native speaker allows you to see something well-hidden in the absurdity. I'm not sure though
Mar 14, 2011 19:10
maybe you're right
Mar 14, 2011 19:10
yeah
Mar 14, 2011 19:08
and I was deadly drunk
Mar 14, 2011 19:08
but it was pretty silly, i think
Mar 14, 2011 19:08
I actually tried to once, the last december
Mar 14, 2011 19:06
he used to draw a blue elephant on his cheek, climb on the closet and read his works. I regret not seeing this
Mar 14, 2011 19:04
he is not odessit though
Mar 14, 2011 19:04
I always wondered how is it to read Kharms without being native Russian speaker
Mar 14, 2011 19:03
I love Kharms
Mar 14, 2011 19:02
we like crazy people here. "crazy" as in "oddly funny"
Mar 14, 2011 19:02
I never assumed you did
Mar 14, 2011 19:01
но Одесса уже не та
Mar 14, 2011 19:01
I like them
Mar 14, 2011 19:01
do you need a hand from captain obvious?
Mar 14, 2011 18:56
in soviet russia, ze world takes over you
Mar 14, 2011 18:53
I'm just trying to conform
Mar 14, 2011 18:52
surprise ending - that's what she said
Mar 14, 2011 18:51
oh I'd like to have a unicorn
Mar 14, 2011 18:49
and all the internet starts to like you
Mar 14, 2011 18:46
I hate then you recommend something out-of-the-question to someone at SO, and he replies "thank you, but I asked how to do it my way". but they have a right to do so, of course
Mar 14, 2011 18:43
@RegDwight I think we should learn how to ask the question in the way it allows to contribute in the answer
Mar 14, 2011 18:43
@RegDwight yeah, it's really a problem, but not always
Mar 14, 2011 18:42
hand waiving is something I dislike the most :-)
Mar 14, 2011 18:41
I understand that extremely rigorous proofs aren't always possible in philology, but I enjoy reading books on the subject written by people who respect rigor
Mar 14, 2011 18:40
math uses very rigorous and definite proofs, and it's still interesting (at least for me). I think that humanities have to learn from maths
Mar 14, 2011 18:38
but truth is not so straightforward with philology
