I have a quick question -- what is the command that provides the width of the body of a document? I am making a minipage and would like to call this value to reduce it by 2in.

Hey, does anyone know what the \a commend is for? I am seeing it used within a foreach loop in a tikzpicture.

nevermind, solution found

Quick question: can someone tell me how I am using \middle incorrectly to resize the \mid symbol in

$\left\{t \begin{pmatrix}
1 \\ -1

Using TeXStudio on Windows with MiKTeX distribution, does anyone know how not to get the warning

"pdflatex (file C:/ProgramData/MiKTeX/2.9/pdftex/config/pdftex.map): invalid entry for `\ProvidesFile{fetamont.map}': both ps_name and font file missing"

Hey, does anyone know a quicker way to get a Lefschetz decomposition of some de Rham form than by doing a wedge product with powers of the symplectic form to get each part of the decomposition one piece at a time?
Jul 9, 2014 12:04
thanks for answering my question by the way
Jul 9, 2014 11:55
those examples couldnt be finite groups right?
Jul 9, 2014 11:54
pretty much yeah
Jul 9, 2014 11:52
sorry

$f : G \rightarrow H$

i meant

ohhh lol

Not enough information is given to determine Cindy's age
Jul 9, 2014 11:50
or is that not a statement that is generally true...
Jul 9, 2014 11:49
If $f : G \rightarrow F$ is a group homomorphism, is $H$ isomorphic to the direct sum of the image and the cokernel of $f$?
Jun 12, 2014 20:29
anyone know of any text that explains why even though there is symplectic structure for the cotangent bundle, the tangent bundle does not have a symplectic structure?

I understand that a differential form is part of the dual space of the vector space that the vector field $Y$ is a part of so $\omega(Y)$ should map to some real number. I'm just not sure how writing out what $\omega(Y)$ should look.
May 14, 2014 18:20
If I have a one form $\omega = \omega_\mu dx^\mu$ and a vector field $Y = Y^\nu\frac{\partial}{\partial x^\nu}$, can someone explain to me what $\omega(Y)$ means. Like what is the action of a one-form on a vector field?
May 5, 2014 03:19
Thanks, I will play with these
May 5, 2014 03:15
@TedShifrin that works for me
May 5, 2014 03:00
anyone know an example manifold?
May 5, 2014 02:59
like the betti number of the manifold is not enough or something
May 5, 2014 02:59
Hey, I was told there are examples of 3-manifolds that the product structure of the de Rham cohomology can distinguish as a topological invariant which it cannot distinguish without the ring structure
Apr 30, 2014 01:38
should have at least done that before asking, sorry
Apr 30, 2014 01:38
Yeah. I just looked up the wiki page, and saw the definition.

Quick question: is the cokernel of a map all of the elements in the codomain that do not get mapped to by any element in the domain?
Apr 29, 2014 00:15
I have a professor that mentioned something about a connection between the de Rham cohomology and dynamical systems. Does anyone know generally about their relation?

http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/765677/question-about-flow

I believe this should be a pretty quick question to answer if someone here is familiar with the flow of a vector field...
Apr 23, 2014 05:27
@robjohn Thank you. Yeah that and the other requirement that $\langle x,x \rangle \geq 0$ was trippin me up too, since this implies there is an ordering.
Apr 23, 2014 05:22
my text has a true/false question on this, but it only states that "Except for section 6.8, we assume that all vector spaces are over the field $F$, where $F$ denotes either $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$" when it talks about the fields for inner products... which isn't really exacting on yes or no to this true/false question....
Apr 23, 2014 05:20
can an inner product space be over a field other than the real or complex numbers?
Apr 20, 2014 00:56

Thank you for link

No I haven't, I am currently using Geometry, Topology, and Physics by Nakahara
Apr 20, 2014 00:44
anyone know books that cover flows, lie derivatives, differential forms, lie groups, and lie algebras?
Apr 15, 2014 18:31
Using Geometry, Topology, and Physics by Nakahara... want to have another text to reference
Apr 15, 2014 18:30
anyone know a good reference to introduce what the tangent space of a manifold at a point is and the cotangent space?
Apr 11, 2014 21:06
Ok cool. Thank you.
Apr 11, 2014 21:04
Quick question: a subdomain of an integral domain $D$ is just a subset $A$ of $D$ that satisfies that $A$ is an integral domain under the same operations of $D$ or is there something else to it?
Mar 7, 2014 02:25
Ok
Mar 7, 2014 02:25
The case where $A$ is the zero matrix is an easy case for the proof, so I am neglecting this choice of $A$.
Mar 7, 2014 02:24
$A$ is nonzero
Mar 7, 2014 02:24
If $A$ is an $m \times n$ nonzero matrix, $B,C$ are $m \times m$ invertible matrices, and $BA = CA$, can I assert that $B = C$ or is there a case where this isn't necessarily true?

Working on a proof that the reduced row echelon form of a matrix is unique for homework and this would give me the final step I need for my proof.
Mar 6, 2014 05:29
Or should I think of a different approach
Mar 6, 2014 05:27
I am trying to prove that if the coefficient matrix of a system of $m$ linear equations in $n$ unknowns over a field $F$ has rank $m$, the the system has a solution.

If I let $A$ be the $m \times n$ coefficient matrix with rank $m$ and I let $b$ be an arbitrary column vector in $F^m$, could I show that the rank of $A$ and the rank of $A$ augmented by $b$ must both be $m$?
