The boosters didn't cut off when they should have, so that would seem to indicate some sort of control system failure. Maybe there was more heat or vibration than they anticipated?

At the very least queue reviews should have a link to this chat so it doesn't feel like an authoritarian dictatorship.

Which hell are we trying to avoid here... the one where there are more semi-related answers, or the one where there are no answers and fewer people?
May 27, 2022 10:24
In fairness the title of the question is a poor description of the detail. I see this often - you search the web for your problem, you land on a SE title that describes your problem - even if the OP asked something slightly different but in the same domain - people figure it out and not finding anything close share their answer there, and then they get hell for sharing and how dare they not open a new question or answer the question to the exact detail.

serverfault.com/review/late-answers/521523 This "audit" question doesn't seem fair. Who decided on the review audit questions - and why doesn't "audit fail" come with an explanation or a discussion? Also this seems like a lost opportunity to gain a new community member... I chose "Looks OK", it looks like the person who had their answer deleted spent half a day writing that answer, which is a solution even if only closely related. Sure it's not "American", more "Indian". So what?

Except in rural agricultural societies... for example in the Transkei in South Africa, the Xhosa people has a custom to work for beer. If you want help to build a hut, or to change your roof, you just brew some beer and people will come to help. Raw materials and food is plentiful... because there are no fridges, the custom is to slaughter a goat or sheep or cow when there's a funeral or a birth... and there are plenty of those. Oh, and the women carry water. You can visit communities like these... seeing life before modern technology is a revelation.

@tpg2114 Don't you think that's what the question asks for - a metaphor to help people who have little grasp of physics or mathematics, feel that it makes sense? Ie. a metaphor or analogy?
Jan 14, 2016 08:13
@ChrisWhite Fair point... but can't we get very philosophical about the whole concept of "an uncertainty"? Yes, it's not an instrument problem - it's a fundamental observation about reality.... but we're still the observer and to observe we use perception and thinking tools, so it is not, then, perhaps a "feature" of our way of observation... our way of thinking... and by extension, a complex fundamental measurement problem?
Jan 14, 2016 08:07
ie. The measurement actually takes time. You can of course measure it from outside... infer it... from outside. But that's cheating... and in reality nothing is "outside".
Jan 14, 2016 08:05
What do you think of this explanation (perhaps suitable to programmers): You can't write a program to measure the time it takes to measure something, without altering the actual time it takes to measure it.

Jun 11, 2013 15:20
On the surface, if you're born into a rich family, you have a better chance of being better off... or if you're born with enough wits to "escape your situation"... or if you're at the right place at the right time, and you've learnt the right lessons so as to be ready for that "opportunity" presented to you...
Jun 11, 2013 15:17
Regardless... interesting universe we live in... specifically the fact that so many things in our lives and worlds are purely position-bound.
Jun 11, 2013 15:15
...but what if it, if it's "sentient Google" watching... "sentient Google" will in no time at all reach a point where it wouldn't need to watch, it will just tell them up front that their ad won't work... or what they need to do to make it work, in which case it wouldn't need to watch :-D
Jun 11, 2013 15:14
Oh yes, of course. I'm looking forward to the day computer intelligence renders all our security useless. :-p ...Scary on the one hand... on the other, it begs the question: what makes you different from anyone else and why would anyone watch you?... Personally.... I'd have no issues if I could simply "watch back" ie. see exactly who is watching me and making sure they see how much their ad is annoying me...

:-) What are you guys talking about?
Jun 11, 2013 14:55
Hi All... I just discovered the SE chats... Sooo coool. I've long been saying IRC needs a makeover. Two questions jump to mind:
1) Why isn't SE open source so I can add word clouds and custom filters & bots and use a self-hosted offline version for our office? ... Or is there a better solution?
2) Why am I too lazy to dig for a FAQ... oh it's because I'm human and it's easier to ask than to look... but only if you're lucky :-)
3) Oh yeah... another thing I'd add: Multiple lanes per room... ie. shared "private" topic-based conversations or multiple rooms in one room...
