sweet! running "fdisk --zap /dev/sda" fixed it! There were leftovers of GPT table after replacing Windows 8 with Windows 7

I have to add that when I was installing Windows 7, I allocated enough free space for Ubuntu (as evident from the fdisk result)

currently set to CSM OS in the bios. Windows 7 eventually installed fine, after messing with Secure Boot (off), Fast boot (off) and OS Mode

yes, but running in the "other" mode (so Win7 can boot)

thing is, I installed Win 7 (having completely reformatted the drive)

same stuff with 12.10. This machine came with Windows 8, I wonder whether that had anything to do with it

fdisk -l shows the right partitions

weirdly enough, disk utility does see windows partition

shows /dev/sda (main drive) as free space
