Maybe it's a good thing - if someone introduced me earlier to the mind-blowing results achieved by the combination of maths/philosophy/CS, I would have probably stayed in academia to learn more about the ultimate nature of reality.

@ZachLipton Yes, various travel guides say that it's polite to learn a few common words but if you're good at imitating the local accent, it makes people think you're either a local or fluent. It brought me much amusement and confusion of locals in South Tyrol recently :-)

@DanielHatton I tried migrants crime and look at the first recent result I found: link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12115-019-00436-8

@Sursula Not sure where you're from, but have you actually visited a city with a large number of muslim migrants? Have you seen the crime statistics there? Sure, correlation does not imply causation, but come on... Feigning ignorance does not make you an anti-racist. Pointing out that you're happy this is not happening in your city does not make the head of the insitute racist either. It's not about race or religion, it's about crime and living conditions in certain cities.

So I was actually pretty much correct in my guess :-D

@Jenayah And who's that in your avatar? Looks like a mashup of Leela and Princess Bubblegum or something.
Jun 1, 2021 09:58
@Jenayah Oh, I think I actually saw that question at some point. At least the covers are somewhat familiar, and I'm not French. Anyways, thanks for answering, I hope it's not annoying to other users to read it AGAIN :-) I share your sentiment on helping other people, though I'm more of a StackOverflow guy myself. Always gives me a good feeling when I receive an upvote by someone who's life was made easier by my answer. I can't imagine the untold billions of man-hours that site alone has saved.

@Jenayah Hi, I stumbled upon your profile while reading some answer. Nice to meet a friendly character who invites others to a chat room! :-) So what's the story of your first answer? And how many times have you had to answer this?

@AzorAhai-him- I'm starting to think that Fattie is actually just a troll. Their answers and comments are often so crazy and extreme that even I have noticed, and I pretty much only see what ends up in Hot Network Questions. Or maybe Fattie is an evil princess from a Disney movie or an autocrat of some third world country, the suggestions would totally point in that direction :-)

...and naïve soul, but it will make any skeptic cringe. Anyways, I appreciate this debate and your sincerity.

@HoldToTheRod I was just trying to point out what I see as a glaring flaw in your argument with no malicious intent. And yes, I've watched your videos, but I have to conclude that they are quite similar to your post above and contain some fallacies. For example, you seem to conflate 'belief' and 'faith' a lot. I would suggest spending some time studying epistemology - it will help you make your arguments more persuasive or drop some of them if you find that they are not sound. The last link you posted boils down to "universe is awesome, therefore God", which may sound great to a curious...
Apr 19, 2021 23:19
@curiousdannii And it is relevant because the fellow commenters suggest that seeing a false pattern is a valid basis for faith.
Apr 19, 2021 23:19
@curiousdannii Please point to where I talk contemptuously about religious people.
Apr 19, 2021 23:19
@SpiritRealmInvestigator People are subject to many biases ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cognitive_biases ) which obscure reality to a high degree. This is why you need to analyze the data carefully and rigorously to prevent these biases from making your experiment worthless. This is why science trumps the supernatural whenever you put it to the test.
Apr 19, 2021 23:19
@curiousdannii No, that's actually superstition, not faith. People do not realize that they are just like pigeons in a Skinner box ( psychologistworld.com/superstition ). They experience random events and start to see patterns in it and hold onto them.
Apr 19, 2021 23:19
@HoldToTheRod The Jesus on a toast example was a hyperbole, I was trying to point that your reasoning seems disingenuous - you are comparing someone's testimony to a scientific principle used in everyday business by billions, and appear to be suggesting that these two are somehow the same.
Apr 19, 2021 23:19
But then you are basically saying that faith is actually a belief in evidence, aren't you?
Apr 19, 2021 23:19
No, no, no. You say we believe in science because of faith, but that's not true at all - we believe in it because of its gifts we see and interact with on a daily basis. Do you need faith to trust your GPS receiver, or is it because it has shown you the right way multiple times? Do you verify fluid dynamics before you set foot on an airplane? Do you not see the difference between experiencing evidence first-hand and hearing about Jesus appearing on a piece of toast?

Don't know about other IDEs, but Eclipse has an embedded web browser.

@Buffy: Different countries have different laws. The person in question is a citizen of a country with some laws which may affect the outcome. I appreciate your contributions to Academia SE but lately you seem to be a bit too zealous.

This is insane, I would say that refusing to create an account on these platforms actually proves some digital literacy, which the teacher apparently lacks. I think the lawyers of Electronic Frontier Foundation might be very interested in this case: eff.org

You can offer to show them the code on your laptop - that way they can evaluate it and you do not share the code with them.

As someone who was in a similar position to OP and has just returned from USA, I have to say that this is the best answer. In the vast majority of cases, the server did not see the tip before we left. And there's no need to be uncomfortable anyways as long as the amount is somewhere around 15%. My advice to OP is to consider it as another "tax", just add 15-18% or possibly more if the service was good, and it will be OK. If the service was poor, they can always add the standard tip and go away grumpy without any awkward feelings.

@Human: Judging by the file's modification date, I'm pretty sure it's nothing interesting. That's just in case you decide not to open it. If you do, take precautions so that you do not get caught doing it.

Just ask the opposite question: How to explain belief in god in a world where religious miracles are not happening and spirits do not visit earth. And there's your answer :-)

I suggest adding a large amount of extremely hot chilli powder in your food, something like Carolina Reaper or Trinidad Scorpion. Most people do not handle this amount of heat very well, so while this will punish them, it can be explained as a simple preference for a certain taste.

On a side note, you should check that circumventing the Big Brother is not illegal in your country. It would be great if you could update the question after you solve the issue or if you confront the ISP about the issue. I'm really curious about this one!
