@NathanMerrill If that were the case, flow limiting devices now commonly mandated would not work. They basically reduce the diameter of the opening so much that there is a signifiant reduction in the total flow. The increase in speed is not in direct proportion to the reduction in diameter or the flow restricters would just produce supersonic jets of the same amount of water. The narrowing creates a friction in the flow that makes delivery less efficient.

@Tester101 The rigidity of metal boxes also may be a factor in places where the attachment and surround make plastics a little too flexy. This is slightly more of a problem since tamperproof outlets increase plug pressure. Also in a few cases, you need so much volume that it is hard to find a plastic box that can compete with a big masonry type metal box.

@Tester101 In the hot tub GFCI question, don't 2 GFCI units in series often have tripping problems?

@Tester101 I am good to go.

@ChrisCudmore Thanks much for both the editing and the HTML primer. Didn't do the text-wrap this time. Need a bit more practice with the language.
bib
Feb 20, 2014 03:40
@Tester101 Just finished editing. Will not take any other steps til I hear from you.
bib
Feb 19, 2014 22:02
Also, as to formatting, I gather there is no easy way to do a text-wrap around the too narrow pictures?
bib
Feb 19, 2014 22:01
So does someone else need to sign off, weigh in, or push the button? Or do I just hit "Publish"?
bib
Feb 19, 2014 21:57
Excellent point
bib
Feb 19, 2014 21:55
@ChrisCudmore How's that?
bib
Feb 19, 2014 21:55
So we decided to add tiles to the vertical inside edge of the firebox. This narrowed the horizontal opening overall opening by about 1½” ( the thickness of two tiles and thinset), down to to 46 1/2" . With just a little fudging of the grout width to a hair more than 3/8” (but not quite ½”), we got a perfect fit of ten tiles horizontally between the bulls-eyes.
bib
Feb 19, 2014 21:55
@ChrisCudmore current: We wanted only full tiles between the decorative corners, but the 48" spacing between the inside edges of the firebox was a bit too wide for 10 tiles, even with 3/8" grout. Stretching them out was not an option because the grout lines would be too wide compared to the vertical runs.

@ChrisCudmore Let me take another pass at it.
bib
Feb 19, 2014 20:44
@BMitch Too long? Any other obvious errors?
bib
Feb 19, 2014 20:13
@Tester101 OK. All loaded and proofed. Is there another set of eyes to look at this before I hit "Publish"? Always happy to get feedback before embarrassment.

Okay. Now that I am allowed in the game, where is the playing field? And what equipment do I use? More particularly, where is text pasted in, in what format, and how are images attached?

@Tester101 The Imperial Margarine Crown just appeared over my head! (A very dated and localized reference, but some may understand).

@BMitch OK. I think I've logged in to blogoverflow.

@Tester101 I have a project story about tiling a fireplace surround. It is a followup to a question I posted on the site last year. I would like it considered for the DIY blog. The earlier question is

I have text and images ready. Please let me know next steps.

A: How to repair a microwave door with a broken spot weld

bibDon't do it. Microwaves, while safe, emit a significant radiation that is controlled, in part, by a carefully designed door interlock system. If it is compromised, there is a risk of radiation leakage. You don't fix microwave doors, you send it back for them to fix or you replace the entire uni...

Am I out of line with this microwave position?

@DA. Sometimes you can push the powers that be to make sense. Code tries to be practical and practitioners can sometimes drive change. Copyright law stretches back to at least the 17th century. Changes need to be brought about through legislative pressure. The massive download patterns under Napster et al. hurt low end musicians and didn't fix the model (but it prompted a lot of rethinking).

@NiallC. Not following the issue. When I click on the link, I see your deletion. If I click on the history, I see the offensive message (and I agree). What's up?

@DA. I really don't care whether the OP copies the sculpture or not. I think we need to be careful and sensitive about endorsing even technically problematic behavior. It's like our encouraging people to violate building ode that are a little over the top. May not really matter but not good to encourage. (And we know many will do it anyway - and maybe even we have [but please don't tell Tester101]) .
bib
Jan 26, 2014 03:10
@NiallC. Still here. I can see it.

As a lawyer, I would never advise my clients to chase down home copiers, but when the copying goes public, you need to push back or it all falls apart.
bib
Jan 26, 2014 02:26
but as a society, we have to try to stand by the rules to help the struggling artist to get something of what they work for. on a public site, we can't endorse ripping off an artist even if it wont change her bottom line. In leaner times, is designed and built stained glass. At about $3 an hour. If somebody made a direct copy of my stuff, I would be pissed.

spent 25 years as an intellectual property lawyer, but I will not argue that the IP laws are right/just/fair/balanced/clear. But there is a good purpose behind them. Artists/writers/singers work hard usually for crap reward and the laws try to give them some protection. incidental infringement really doesn't matter. the guy copying the sculpture is not going to buy a legit copy of the sculpture.
