Regardless of whether "transgender" was ever used as a verb properly, "transgendered" has been used by people who clumsily imply just that meaning, and I have had the word used in that sense towards me pejoratively very recently. It matters.
May 18, 2018 01:01
@ruakh Again, you miss the point where using the word as a verb has historical implications and therefore providing complete context of why it is inappropriate is relevant even if the other reasons are fully-sufficient.
May 18, 2018 01:01
The nature/nurture debate is irrelevant both to the use of language and the every day lives of transgender people. We are not subjects in a fishbowl; we are humans with lives, and whatever causes us to be trans is substantially less important than our ability to have equitable access to the rights of civil society. This comment is out of bounds for this StackExchange and my humanity as a person and I am uninterested in it.

@anaximander "Gay" and "lesbian" have never (widely) been considered pejorative within-community, but they have been considered pejorative by straight people using them to insult and oppress gay people. It is noteworthy that the queer community in America has a long history of reclaiming terminology; today, the word "queer" is used pridefully whereas less than a generation ago it was a slur (and many do still consider it such, and it should be used carefully).
May 18, 2018 01:01
To put it another way, the generalized rules of grammar are less relevant to the specific case of this word both in a linguistic/grammatical sense and in the sense of learning the language. Adding -ed is grammatically incorrect precisely because it is offensive, much as using du in German would be a grammatically incorrect and offensive way to address a superior.
May 18, 2018 01:01
@ruakh Your point about grammar totally erases the historicity of transgender rights and the transgender struggle. It is very much relevant, both in the context of how grammar and language are used in practice, and in the historical context of the ways transgender people have been oppressed, to treat the term as described and to consider it a word worthy of exceptions to the rule. The rules of language are evolving and reflect social issues; this is a social issue.
May 18, 2018 01:01
This said, there are still trans people who use transgendered and if that is a term a person wishes be used for themselves, the best choice is to honor it. The dynamics are complicated within the community, and the impact of getting it wrong is less one of offense and more one of appearing to be out of touch and it gives the impression of not listening to the community you're speaking or writing about.
