General discussion for politics.stackexchange.com

@user1345541 Go nuts :)
Jul 25, 2024 09:04
As we get closer to the election, it might be worth unfreezing the US Politics room (previously 2020 US Election discussion) and making it a dedicated 2024 US Election discussion room; give me a ping if anyone feels it's necessary. I think we're fine in here for now given there's not a lot of other discussion going on.

@User1865345 I don't quite understand why there seems to be a lot of focus on what actually hit Trump - shrapnel or the bullet itself. Does it matter? Perhaps I'm missing something.
May 22, 2024 12:07
@User1865345 yes, at the moment the polls suggest a pretty heavy Labour win
May 22, 2024 12:05
@User1865345 depends really, new inflation figures were released this morning which were good, but whether that will cut through to the general public I have no idea. I think waiting 'til January would be interpreted as clinging to power, but tbh anything could affect the result. I've seen people even suggest that holding an election around the end of the 2024 Euros could benefit the Tories if England does well!
May 22, 2024 12:00
@User1865345 that's the latest possible date - Sunak can call it at any point between now and January. The earliest date it can actually be held if he were to call it today would be the end of June :)

I'm hearing rumours that the UK general election is about to be called... Supposedly the PM's office isn't answering questions on it rather than denying it, as they have when similar rumours have circled previously. There's a 'must attend' Cabinet meeting this afternoon, and the political officials bench at Prime Minister's Questions today is looking very empty.

@MartinSleziak Worth noting that this London mayoral election is the first to take part under FPTP since the voting system was changed from SV in 2022.

@MartinSleziak I believe this is a cross-network problem, raise a chat flag if this happens again and a mod can clear them.
Mar 4, 2024 15:26
Ah lovely, I'll check it out later. Thank you :)
Mar 4, 2024 15:14
I only dipped into the hearings, downside of being 5 hours out of sync with the US :P
Mar 4, 2024 15:13
I've only skimmed it, but the point seems to be that as it's a federal office, only Congress can decide to disqualify on that basis rather than individual states? Is that correct?
Mar 4, 2024 15:12
@User1865345 The ruling was unanimous rather than on party lines, however - supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/23-719_19m2.pdf

@uhoh There was a 'rude or abusive' flag against the post as well as the 'not an answer' flag which Philipp actioned... as a result of the deletion it was marked as helpful and applied the automatic 'marked as spam or r/a' filter. Not intended and doesn't make that much of a difference but I've cleared the flag now so it shouldn't appear any more.
Nov 20, 2023 15:59
@User1865345 I don't think it's ever come up - tbh we don't have very many locked posts anyway.
Nov 20, 2023 14:41
@MartinSleziak Huh, I learn something every day. Well, if anyone wants to use it in the future, I'm very happy to unfreeze it again.
Nov 16, 2023 14:24
I'd love to say I'd join in, but they usually take place in the middle of the night over here!
Nov 16, 2023 13:01
@User1865345 I think last presidential election there was enough chat/conversation to warrant a separate room - we might get to that point again over the coming year if people want to chat about debates as they happen or something... From memory, one of the goals was to have somewhere election-specific to point people towards if comments on posts on the main site got too chatty.

@MartinSleziak I've unfrozen it, if anyone wants to use it :) I think it was originally for 2020 election discussion and then renamed after the inauguration.

> In other #reshuffle news a @UKLabour
source tells me up to 17 frontbenchers expect to be sacked on Weds for backing @SNP on the #Gaza ceasefire vote. They say unless @Keir_Starmer
uses the words “immediate ceasefire” they can’t vote with Labour and expect to be fired.

I think the presenter's reaction here reflects most peoples': twitter.com/skynews/status/1723989242097885574

@MartinSleziak I'm hearing that David Cameron will be appointed Foreign Secretary...
Nov 7, 2023 14:42
@User1865345 no nation-wide polls that I know of, there was one of Newsom vs. DeSantis in California, and one of the same matchup in Nevada.
Oct 27, 2023 12:55
Hah, we do somewhere :P I don't think it was ever much used though.
Oct 27, 2023 12:44
Reminder that we have a chatroom dedicated to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict here
Oct 11, 2023 15:30
@JoeW No, they don't - see meta.stackexchange.com/q/292531
Oct 9, 2023 12:19
@User1865345 good plan - I'll unfreeze it for you.
Oct 5, 2023 11:41
Rutherglen and Hamilton West: Voters go to polls in by-election - By-election in Scotland to replace Margaret Ferrier MP (SNP, then Independent)... if Labour takes the seat it could be the first concrete sign of a trend away from the SNP's dominance in Scotland.
Sep 29, 2023 13:21
As I understand it, Newsom will appoint someone to serve in her place until Nov 2024 when there'll be a special election for someone to take over and serve the remaining 3 months of her term. In Nov 2024 there'll also be a general election to decide who will serve in her seat from Jan 2025 onwards. There will also be primaries for both elections held in March 2024.
Sep 28, 2023 08:02
@User1865345 Pathetic lines of questioning like this definitely serve to validate Trump's choice to skip the debates.
Sep 27, 2023 13:55
@User1865345 Well he does now - he didn't at the time! Still, one would have thought that someone would have realised which side of WW2 someone fighting against the Russians would have been on.
Sep 22, 2023 13:48
@uhoh 6'2", 275lbs is the answer, I'm afraid.
Feb 27, 2023 16:08
Not sure about a new statement today though

He said last month that he'd back any deal which fixed the protocol telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/01/12/…

I wish they'd release the actual text of the agreement so we can make our own minds up

 Arab–Israeli conflict

Room for discussing the Arab–Israeli conflict
Sep 30, 2024 12:48
@User1865345 Sounds good - I'll go with the Wikipedia title 'Arab–Israeli conflict' but open to suggestions!

@SPavel Haha :) certainly, no hard feelings intended.

I'm not very active on this site at all beyond a casual interest in history. My sole reason for nominating myself is that I think a moderator has a lot more legitimacy if they win an election rather than just being the only candidate - and if on the off chance I do happen to win, then I wouldn't mind helping out, and I know I could do a decent job.
Apr 16, 2024 21:21
@Mast Absolutely, I have no doubt they would make a great moderator - we have plenty of support for new moderators, and if we only picked site mods from the existing pool of network mods then things would get pretty stale pretty quick.
Apr 16, 2024 09:11
Hi everyone - nominated myself because there seems to be a lack of candidates. Feel free to ping me with any questions!

 Ukrainian Conflict 2022

Room for discussing the conflict in Ukraine.
Sep 4, 2023 13:13
@User1865345 I haven't watched the CNN video, so it might mention this - but Ukrainian media seems to be suggesting that Reznikov may become the Ukrainian Ambassador to the UK.

That being said, if you'd like to ask the community why your question was closed, and for suggestions as to how you could edit your question to bring it on-topic - or even to argue your case for why your question should not have been closed and should be reopened - I suggest you ask a question on our meta site (politics.meta.stackexchange.com)
Jun 27, 2023 07:59
Hi! I'm sorry you had a bad experience asking your question. While I didn't personally close your question, I can see why community members ultimately voted to close it. The difficulty is that questions asking for the 'political implications' of future or very recent events tend to be incredibly speculative; predictions for future events are explicitly off-topic on the site because (among other reasons) there is no way for users to know which answer is correct.
