I did have the subtraction of the pairs of columns in my models, so maybe I would have stumbled upon it, since then the only other transform I needed was factorial...

but lets be honest - I probably wouldn't have got it.

truth be told, not specifically combinations. I tried quite a lot of math, so maybe I might have stumbled upon it from first principles and published a very convoluded answer - and then someone would have had to say to me "Hey - that can be simplified to combinations"

oh well, at least some good came out of it - this puzzle is actually why I joined PSE and stopped being a lurker
