Yeah I've never used a rearview. Shoulder checking has sufficed so far, but sometimes with dark glasses on, I have to check longer than I want, and end up veering a bit. No problem so far, but I'm trying to optimize my chances of not having my vector catastrophically intersected for quite a while.
Yeah, the distraction is probably the greater problem, although if I'm going to choose to be distracted, I'd rather have my hearing unobstructed to elevate my chances of survival ever so slightly.
I'll see what my REI dividend is this year coming up in March. Maybe I'll grab the AfterShokz if it's sizable. It's between those or some ASIC kayano 24s
Second, against my better judgement I rode with my AirPods in this morning, since they're so open air and do almost nothing to block outside sound from coming in. I felt more comfortable doing that since I was mostly on a multi-use path today, and not in traffic / on roads much. Not bad. AirPods fit my ears well and stay stuck in there nicely.
@freiheit Two things from this morning. First, I got the Garmin to show text messages. Great because I really needed to know that my UPS box got a package, and my side office's internet connection was down. -_- However, the more annoying thing is that the text messages don't clear from off the top of your ride stats until you click the back button. -_____-
I've half considered making some vicious procmail rule that tears out the LiveTrack URL and then spits it out to a webhook (like Slack) or SMS service (Twilio)
LiveTrack doesn't do SMS notification like Strava Beacon does, but Strava Beacon makes immutable links. You can't delete them! So your live ride, that does not honor privacy regions, is available at that link forever.
I find the screen too small to be much of a guide. I did just add the BLE connection, or whatever, to show texts and calls, but my Apple Watch makes that a little extraneous. Hey, I don't have to take a hand off the bars I guess, so that's good?
@freiheit Tonight I just turned off the segment alerts. 10 times out of 10 I just want to see my current stats, and not look down to see a segment status report. I have a small handful of segments that I know about in my mind, and keep track of them mentally. I'd rather just look down and see my trip stats.
@Twisty What's your email addy? I can invite you to a Slack for sysadmins / devops / tech people in general. It's not "The Comms Room, but Slack" as some think of it. You can access it at sysadmin.chat
There is no disagreement worth that kind of attack, least of all letting myself get angry and personally attacking someone over something as silly as a bunch of Q/A that will most likely have zero lasting impact on world history in the long run. =)
It occurred to me that being in public agreement with the cursing of another person, no matter how anonymous, was as good as if I had said it to the person themselves. I don't know how I let this situation get me to the point it has, but here I am. Shog9, I ask forgiveness for my part in taking what should have remained an impersonal disagreement into deeply personal territory. I was wrong in doing that.
A couple of days ago something was said here in The Comms Room to you, @Shog9, that was a rather pointed and personal attack. I'm not sure if you even saw it, but that's not important. I won't link to it specifically or repeated it. The important part is that I starred it. With glee! Except as the hours rolled on... and now a few days have passed, it's been on my mind more and more as I've considered what all has been going down on the site and in meta.
I'm seriously considering deleting my account on StackExchange, but not in anger or taking my marbles and going home to pout. More in sadness at what I've let it push me to. Everyone's been in a tizzy with the latest kerfuffle on ServerFault / Meta and getting hissy, quite possibly letting things that are of little lasting value get them angrier than is reasonable in the scope of life. There's been something weighing on me concerning this situation and it started with a star.
