@Patrice The senior dev is the issue. Dude needs to be replaced. Not saying what you should say isn't professional. It's cowardly. In order to be professional you need to say what should be said in a way that people will listen to. If people decide that they're done listening, you need to make them listen. If it doesn't need to be said then don't say it. This "Senior" dev is destroying the code base with poor practices. Eventually this will cripple the company.
Apr 17, 2019 01:45
@Patrice OP isn't in as much trouble as this senior dev. Just need to check him before you wreck him. Behavior like this from a senior exudes stupidity and incompetence.
Apr 17, 2019 01:45
Explain that his "code" - it wouldn't pass for that in my office - should have version control so he should just be reject merge requests. Tell him his code is hacky garbage full of tehcnical debt. Tell him you know he's incompetent and can't do his job.

@lolbas sounds to me like you broke the law and should not speak of this, however building a mirror of a game from scratch without looking at source code is a great exercise and proves your ability to program.
Jan 10, 2019 07:20
Were you reverse engineering or hacking? It sounds like you hacked something illegally.

Dec 28, 2018 18:53
@JoeStrazzere I'm aware, but in this case it seems completely inappropriate.

Isn't moving things to chat supposed to happen when the comments are a back and forth discussion or hugely off topic? This just seems like comments added more detail that would have stopped if left alone.
Dec 28, 2018 16:37
Why was this moved to chat!?

@Steve the advice you gave is honestly not great for people who don't own the business they're working. The last sentence, however, takes any relevance to the workplace completely out of the question. There's no reason for it to be there. I'm pretty tired so I could have read wrong, but initially it seemed like you were proclaiming moral rightness. This IMO leads to toxic work environments and isn't a good strategy to implement when working with a group in general. Don't take the downvotes too hard. This sort of thing still happens to me actually lol.
Oct 26, 2018 23:11
I'll upvote if you get rid of the last line in your answer.

Oct 17, 2018 09:02
Don't you mean 1.5 times your daily rate? The rule of thumb I've seen is double your paychecks cause you'll spend half your pay on stuff your employer isn't giving you.

Oct 5, 2018 13:45
@Cypher Shouldn't you show up to your job with knowledge and ability? Why do you need a work history to show you have those things?
Oct 4, 2018 19:10
I don't understand why this has so many downvotes. It's pretty much how it is these days. Even if your read is wrong, starting a business is a common thing now. No company willing to hire you is no problem if you can create value in the economy for yourself.

@forest Thanks for carrying on my point!
Sep 26, 2018 19:42
Is that a slur?
Sep 26, 2018 19:41
@Upper_Case Without seeing what the "slur" was I have to be skeptical about weather it was actually a slur. Gotta be honest, it usually isn't a slur. Usually it's {insert country known for producing players that ruin gaming experience here}. Pretty much every single time.

Sep 26, 2018 19:11
That's not a valid comparison. The occasional {insert country known for producing highly skilled players or cheaters here} ruin my games in extreme cases is not at all the same thing as harboring genuine hate.
Sep 26, 2018 19:09
@Upper_Case KKK members spread racial rhetoric. They don't routinely see people driven to a point of anger so great that it literal inhibits their ability to think and use fine motor skills in a hobby where thinking and using fine motor skills is literally the point on a regular basis.
Sep 26, 2018 17:51
Specificity makes it bigoted in the context on online gaming. You need to compare it to acceptable language use for flaming in the game the coworker was playing in.
Sep 26, 2018 17:50
@Upper_Case It's not about if it applies to your target. Specificity matters because it portrays intent. If the language was more racist than what's normally used then you have grounds to speculate that said person may have racial bias. If it's just typical language used by the community said person is playing in than it's nothing more than being tilted.
Sep 26, 2018 16:16
@DoritoStyle
Sep 26, 2018 16:13
Is it bigoted flaming or just normal flaming? Online gaming isn't exactly super nice to begin with. You really can't use that angle unless the coworker in question was saying something extremely specific. If it wasn't super specific it was probably just normal rage flung at cheaters.

I just don't get it. Someone shine some light on any of this
Sep 19, 2018 21:51
Honestly I'm having trouble understanding how you're in a position to decline his submission given that you don't understand the extremely minor consequences of your own actions.
Sep 19, 2018 21:50
that's pretty selfish
Sep 19, 2018 21:50
Legit you just wanted to make someone's life harder because they wouldn't give you free labor
Sep 19, 2018 21:49
I'm really having trouble understanding why you would expect the person in question to want to review for free in the first place. I'm also having trouble understanding why you want to punish this person for not volunteering.
Sep 19, 2018 21:49
I don't understand why this is hard to get
Sep 19, 2018 21:49
@Allure Not paying him to review.... Those are the actions.
Sep 19, 2018 21:49
Wow
Sep 19, 2018 21:48
@Allure I'm not putting words in your mouth. I'm telling you that YOUR ACTIONS COMMUNICATE FOR YOU.
Sep 19, 2018 21:17
Their meaning amounts to you communicating to said individual that paper reviewers are not paid because you chose not to pay him for a contribution you wanted him to make. In this case, your actions have spoken for you.
Sep 19, 2018 21:16
Please read my previous responses again.
Sep 19, 2018 21:15
"A reviewer declines to review a paper because he wants to be paid" why are you taking this to mean that all reviewers should be paid. Perhaps his opinion is worth more than others. I honestly don't understand why you think you're within your rights or even moral ground to discipline another adult.
Sep 19, 2018 21:14
@Allure Do you not see how that's an unfair decision based on your decision not to pay him when you asked to contribute. At best it's petty af.
Sep 19, 2018 21:13
@All
Sep 19, 2018 20:21
If you decide that it's not free for him because he wanted to get paid then you're just discriminating against him by applying a special hidden rule to him.
Sep 19, 2018 20:20
@Allure He did that because you told him it was free when you didn't pay him for his contribution...
Sep 19, 2018 15:13
At this point you'd just be moving the goal posts on him for no reason.
Sep 19, 2018 15:12
@Allure I refuted that point in a similar way. Why would he expect you to handle his work for free? Because that's how you told him it worked when you refused to pay him...
Sep 17, 2018 17:40
I'm really having trouble understanding why you would expect the person in question to want to review for free in the first place. I'm also having trouble understanding why you want to punish this person for not volunteering.
Sep 17, 2018 17:34
@Allure but you do get compensation in most cases for pursuing higher education. I know no one who is working towards a post grad degree who isn't also working for the university in some capacity. Also you do write back to your prof if they refuse to pay you. If you don't you get wholesale taken advantage of. Honestly your original question doesn't even make the slightest bit of sense to me at all.

Sep 12, 2018 15:48
You're probably stressed out by mediocrity, boredom, or not actually valuing your work when compared to other things in your life. Consider meditating and think about what you'd rather be doing instead of work. See if you can get a job related to that.

Q: "Runtime error: cannot open workspace" after creating a connection file and changing the version

SteveI'm trying to run an update cursor. Usually if I have an issue with databases with enterprise connections, making a connection file clears it up. This time when I tried to execute my code I just get a Runtime Error: cannot open workspace message. I went ahead and changed the version but that di...

Aug 22, 2018 20:22
Yo, I'm using arcpy. I'm trying to use an update query on an enterprise connection database. I've taken the necessary step of creating a connection file, but fore some reason I'm still getting a runtime error. I even switched to my version, though the connection file was in my version in the first place. Does anyone have any ideas? That should have worked as far as I know.

This is possible actually. Monante fighting systems rely on this. I also believe Musashi actually won a one vs many encounter handily when he fought through a few of his assassination attempts. There's no need to make your world any different from ours. Additionally, many sword masters/grandmasters have commented on newer swordsmen being fantastic on the attack, but completely unable to defend themselves from incoming blows. Your Swordmaster just needs to be a guy who knows how to block and uses one vs group tactics. No need for anything else. The Master swordsman trope is not a fantasy.
