I think "other duties as assigned" can likely cover on call or customer support duties, but not the additional number of hours, or the change in work hours.

If I were you I'd also ask this question on the Security SE. It's definitely a better fit here, but you'll find more security professionals there, and some of them might have experience with similar situations. Worth a shot I'd say.

At the very least, you'd need a way for killings to not be significantly larger than births, or not larger than births for a significant amount of time. So, perhaps consider it being frowned upon?

Are you sure they're blaming you and making a big deal of the rude remarks? If I were your boss and you told me what your question says, I'd confiscate your laptop IMMEDIATELY and start a full investigation. This is potentially a huge security breach, and company data or customers data might be compromised. Only after I was sure everything is ok would I actually consider whether you sent the email or not.

@Nosajimiki I haven't, for that reason. But you're right. Plenty of people do.

This is equivalent to letting the lottery/casino pick the number which suits them best. Why would anyone even bother to play, if the house has the ability to never let them win? Or are you suggesting casinos do this behind everyone's backs?

Could they be aliens? Or rather, were aliens when they arrived, and evolved from there in the saltier oceans that came after early life developed on Earth. That could explain how they evolved to have more salt in their cells.

Keep in mind that there are very... kinetic ways of lead poisoning that would kill the person very easily. Especially if they're administered by an individual interested in your character's death.

I have some bartender experience, and I can tell you that alcohol is very good at highlighting some flavors. That's why vodka (which is basically alcohol + water) is added to some drinks. You can test this as well, pick any drink with vodka that you can prepare, and prepare two versions: one with vodka and one without it. Intoxication is not instantaneous, so for the first minute or so you should be tasting what your characters will taste. Let us know what you find out!

You can also consider that an update by itself could break or outright brick a device, either intentionally or not. No need to add a backdoor, just a small change that was "accidentally" pushed to production.

@James how would the new company know you used to hold a "Junior Software Engineer" title? You are an engineer, you have 3 years of experience, you can do X and Y (and you will need to prove some of that somehow in an interview), and that's it. Nobody's ever asked me whether I've held the "Technical Leader" title, all they ask is whether I have experience leading teams. And my LI just says "Software Engineer".
Mar 2, 2022 23:18
Also, I recommend you list all those bullets in your resume and your LinkedIn profile. THAT's going to get you past the "oooohhhh he was a Junior Software Engineer, he probably doesn't know a lot" thing that you're imagining.

I wouldn't mention the other companies, I would just go with "You're paying me X, and you're hiring for X + Y for someone who will clearly bring less value than me. Fix it please? Also, no more extra hours"

About all the knowledge that you call useless, I want to add that it would be useful knowledge if they could apply it on a big scale. I'm sure there are SOME aspects of logistics that can be improved, you could carry boilers and some fuel to at least clean wounds with boiled water, there might be some encryption knowledge that's useful to decrypt some messages, etc. As soldiers they would be useless, but as knowledgeable strangers, wise foreigners, wizards from Arda, they might actually make a difference. If only someone would listen to them instead of just giving them a sword...

Stating what others commented as a frame challenge: You don't need/want something as close as possible to modern weapons, you want something as effective as possible to defend yourselves, which will be built using close to modern knowledge. Bronze rifles are closer than crossbows to modern weapons, but crossbows will probably suit you better.

Also, OP most likely can't directly help the client (for example, OP can claim they don't have access to code/documentation). Never mind the client-oldEmployer relationship, for the client the only (legal from OP's PoV) way to get what they want is contacting OP's old employer. OP should clarify this, if the client doesn't seem to understand.

@Shep the probability is zero, or the probability approaches zero / can be considered zero?

"we aren’t an Agile company as we deal with hardware integration" is something I wouldn't mention in interviews, if you decide or are forced to leave the company. It shows a misconception of agile.

+1 for an excellent answer, +100 for the smallpox. you're evil, dude.

Half an answer, so it goes in comments: remote-piloted drones would have to deal with sensory and input lag. If you're trying to control a drone on the moon from earth's surface (or rather, you're at an equivalent distance in space, no atmosphere), you have a delay of 1.28 seconds for each trip. That is, 1.28 seconds to see what your drone is seeing, X time to react, 1.28 seconds for your instructions to reach your drone.

I don't think a thousand people can fit into a castle. You might want to mention in your story whether they're planning to hold for much longer than 7 days or they know that in 7 days it's over, because of food storage.

Why not have a metric system develop a bit earlier?

Thanks @reirab, that's the kind of distinction I had in mind, but I didn't know for certain.

Would these requirements be comparable to a driver's license? Or is the right to bear arms not comparable to the right to drive (if that even exists)?

Jul 31, 2019 06:25
I REALLY need to ask (and I'm surprised no one's asked before). Have you ever heard of something called "agile"?

Jul 25, 2019 07:30
Perhaps you could consider working remotely. The benefits are irrelevant for this question, but it would open you up to a global market (or European market at least). Not a solution per se, but it does make it harder to run out of companies to send your applications to (as you said in a comment), and it increases your chances of finding a recruiter you can reason with

Actually, if you're moving at the speed of light towards an observer, you're invisible to them. It's not that light doesn't reflect from you or that you don't glow, but THEY can't see you because your punch arrives at the same time as the photons reflected off your fist. You could also take into account the delay in the signal from the eyes reaching the brain, and use that to calculate your necessary speed (lower than c) for arriving after the photons have reached the eye but before the signal has reached the brain, making you "effectively" invisible to your target (at some finite distances)

@DewiMorgan That was exactly my point. But add an extra detail: The problem needs to be hard enough that Death can't solve it, simple enough that you already know the solution, and also hard enough that Death is certain you don't know the solution. Something along the lines of "Prove Fermat's last theorem" if you are Fermat.
Nov 19, 2018 09:16
The question is not impossible to answer. Death is not all-knowing, and while he is insanely difficult to trick, as the question is asked Death can be tricked. The game is to trick Death into accepting a game he has less than 65% chance of winning, by making him think his chances are 100%. This is doable assuming Death is forced to play a game. If Death can outright deny you that possibility, doing so would be his optimal strategy, and then the question becomes unsolvable.

@DmitryGrigoryev that's a great point, dealing with other employees. No information was provided about that in the question, but it should be taken into account as well.
Nov 15, 2018 21:13
I think we're discussing the wrong issue. We're agreeing that the money doesn't belong to the employee and that taking it is wrong (even if some of us think in some cases such a thing might be justified or might be the best/only course of action, we still agree it's wrong). I think we also agree that the OP should give the money to the employee if the employee had never stolen it and had asked for it. So, the real question becomes whether the OP should give the money to the employee AFTER he's caught them stealing.
Nov 15, 2018 21:13
@jpmc26 I completely agree. However, some of us think that just because someone does the wrong thing it doesn't mean they don't deserve help. By the way, I meant to say that firing them could lead his family to starvation, not that they are starving already, so their situation is presumably not that dire (yet).

So... what if the "humans" that could plausibly inhabit your utopia are so utopic that they could hardly be considered humans anymore? Start taking away things that would endanger/destroy the utopia, like psycopaths, then keep going, remove weakness, remove imperfections, remove differences, remove "bad" feelings, and at some point you'll have produced utopic inhabitants for your utopia. I really really wonder how human they would be.

I know for a fact none of the senior or semisenior devs will be available for this new project. only people with even less experience than me. I fear I'll be required to do all the heavy lifting, solve everyone's doubts, etc, since the guys in other projects don't know php. As of today I've had 1 week of experience with wordpress and php. How can I prepare myself to succeed on such a thing, or at least fail gracefully?
Mar 20, 2017 18:36
On the meantime there was a small project in wordpress + php where a semisenior dev was doing all the heavy lifting. This guy left on a 4-month vacation, and suddenly my boss tells me I'll be working in this wordpress project so that I learn the tech stack and later I'll be assigned to a new project (website with 1M visits a month) using wordpress and php
Mar 20, 2017 18:36
Thanks. My situation is this. I've been working as a developer for 10 months now (it's my first job). It's a small company, 25 employees (we were 15 when I started). I've been in 3 projects so far: One with a senior dev, a semisenior dev, another junior and a QA for a local client; one with a semisenior dev for a client abroad (US client, I live in Argentina); and a project for my boss's father's company where I was the only dev, doing maintenance and a couple of new features. Always java and JS

Hi everyone. I need some advice on how to prepare myself for an upcoming project. Can I ask about that here in the chat? Should I create a new room for my question?
