In general, I think it is fine to migrate questions here that are plausibly on-topic first, and we can decide what to do with them from there. Of course there is no harm in asking in individual cases, but it tends to be more efficient if that is the exception rather than the rule.
@MartinSleziak Sorry about that. I don't check chat that often. I'm not a fan of etymology/terminology questions personally, but other questions of this type have been well-received by the community, so at the very least it is not obviously off-topic.
@Wrzlprmft Yes, the question asking for the source of that quote would likely be fine. The broader question of how to find sources for old works is too broad though (in my opinion); that is a large part of the work when it comes to history of science.
This one may be a bit of a special case considering that the company which did the localization was an offshoot of the company which did the original Japanese work, but it still strikes me the wrong way
The version you got if you bought it in English had to completely change one of the route stories to adapt it, and there were many other liberties taken. The final result is almost as much an original work as it is a localized version in my view.
Anyway back to my point, as an example, in kono oozora ni, tsubasa o hirogete, the sexual content is actually quite relevant to the plot. Even the PSP version is rated 17+ in Japan and that was with some fairly significant concessions already (though the overall story is preserved).
My point is that, by putting it offsite, you're making it unofficial. But the removed content is part of the original complete version. If the only way to access that content is by tracking down a patch on the developer's website, you are effectively rejecting the developers' original version.
Most of the time doesn't matter that much I guess, but there are some cases where story elements have to be modified or even removed to make an all ages version work.
I just don't think that upgrading to the full version should be some bonus content that you have to find on the developer's website and patch in yourself
it just strikes me the wrong way that sexual content is being allowed on steam by the same policy which is allowing racism, sexism, hate speech, and potentially even more offensive things
yeah that's why it isn't clear to me what exactly the new limits are, but I can't see any VNs I like being classified as illegal or trolling so I guess it doesn't matter much
@Memor-X I didn't hear about that before now, but if they're also referring to it in the new policy, it's a bit ridiculous to me that they are treating a bit of nudity as morally equivalent to something like that.
maybe less good if you're worried there's already too much violence and bigotry in games, which seems to be a big part of what's made the announcement controversial so far
It isn't clear whether this will be the literal policy or there will still be some restrictions but overall it's probably good, at least if you prefer VNs without censorship
The competition I'm talking about isn't a formal competition, but the academic job market is competitive enough that you can't really afford to take vacations or weekends off.
That is stupid, but it's just a symptom of a bigger problem that no one (including Valve themselves) has any clue what Valve's policies are regarding this.
@Memor-X Steam already retracted their recent demands and now are planning to review the games again and bring forth specific complaints. Overall though I'm still not very optimistic about the platform for English language VNs so more options are certainly a good thing.
I should get back into nanoha, but I haven't been up to date since like 2014 and I don't remember where I was at all and I don't even know where to start with the new stuff
In the first place, if you just wait a few years for the prices to drop it's usually cheaper to import it anyway, and it tends to take at least that long for most good VNs to show up on steam (not the made-for-steam kind which are honestly pretty bad)
If those were the only issues it would still be workable, but if they're going to take down or censor stuff based on poorly specified guidelines, it just isn't worth it
