OK, not exactly the same problem, it's not an off-by-one error. But it keeps changing the expiration month of my stored credit card for no apparent reason.
Feb 3, 2023 04:44
@Baumr not since 2019, but in the past six months I've had the problem!
Aug 9, 2021 12:51
Wow, I guess I’ve been here ten years now!
Jan 12, 2021 06:04
Does anyone know what time of day Apple stores' inventory refreshes for the purpose of ordering Macbook Airs for in-store pickup? Last time I checked, no one had the model I wanted in stock. Then tonight I checked and one store did, but it's a state away and a six hour drive, and not in the cards for today.

So with the M1 chip in the new MBA and MBP models, there's only one chip they're making, right, but chips that come off the line with one of the GPU cores not functioning get sold as the lower model MBA and the ones that pass all the tests are the MBP and higher end MBA model?
Oct 23, 2020 02:38
I wish I knew the answer
Oct 23, 2020 02:36
@Allan Did you ask on the site? That's a great question.
Oct 23, 2020 01:43
@JBis That's an awesome feature when I remember to use it.
Jun 24, 2020 19:08
Nice when the problem I have with software is one the developer saw also, so the solution is "upgrade to the most recent version, which solves your problem." apple.stackexchange.com/a/394618/9388
Jun 23, 2020 15:47
@nohillside I'm on Mojave and Safari on one machine and Snow Leopard/Firefox on another.
Jun 23, 2020 15:46
@JBis I suspect we'll know when we see updates during the year. My bet is that bug fixes and incremental updates will be 11.0.1, 11.0.2, etc, and the next "annual release" will be 11.1. But indeed we don't know. We only know this one goes to eleven.

Does fusion have a history of breaking down, or is it just slower?
Jun 23, 2020 01:43
@bmike I can't get 3TB internal with SSD, and that's the most requested spec. What's bad about Fusion? I'd choose SSD myself, but this isn't my box.
Jun 23, 2020 01:15
@bmike Objective function is to minimize lifetime machine transitions, not necessarily to maximize value. I don't really want to buy used 2012 hardware when I can buy 2020 hardware and theoretically get 8 more years of life out of it than the 2020. Also, they're pretty set on the iMac form factor. An iMac is supposed to arrive next week; just trying to figure out if I should set it up or return it for something else, but I think the answer is use it.
Jun 22, 2020 22:45
But my memory is terrible, so no surprise.
Jun 22, 2020 22:44
@Tetsujin I've had that happen too!
Jun 22, 2020 22:42
The end of the OS X era!
Jun 22, 2020 22:42
So Apple announced today the upcoming release of macOS 11.0
Jun 22, 2020 22:41
I still use my G4 for statistical analysis and for ripping or burning DVDs.
Jun 22, 2020 20:30
@JBis great. I still have a PPC G4 that works reliably for certain tasks.
Jun 22, 2020 20:24
Waiting isn't really an option; the current hardware situation is unusable, and there are camera cards full of vacation photos waiting to be copied to the computer. But buying hardware in the last year or two of the processor family's lifecycle seems likely to get closed out of future OS releases sooner rather than later.

Any suggestions?
Jun 22, 2020 20:24
Anyone have hardware shopping wisdom? I have a family member who really values stability in computing platforms. And by stability I don't mean not crashing (although that's certainly a desirable feature), but that the computer will keep running software with the same user interface and workflow snappily and reliably for many years.
The desktop computer this person currently has is a 2006 iMac, which has been used for media storage, web browsing, word processing, and some video editing. It is no longer functional for the uses for which my family member intends to use it; it is painfully slow
Jun 18, 2020 02:17
@bmike Oooh, I want to know the secret to getting points!
May 22, 2020 07:29
@bmike too late, alas
May 7, 2020 02:21
@bmike I've tried many but not all of these. I love drafts. I find JSAnywhere almost unusable. I haven't shelled out the money yet for Code Editor; the fact that they're about to launch Nova for Mac made me hesitate about buying their iOS editor in case they're about to EOL it
May 7, 2020 02:17
@bmike If there were an awesome text editor with grep that felt iPad native I'd buy that it's really "my next computer." It's not terrible for freeform text (I use Drafts a lot), but as soon as I want to reshape my text in any substantial way, I reach for BBEdit. But the awesome thing about Drafts is that the text is already there waiting for me on my Mac.

@grg +
May 4, 2020 05:00
Hmm. Having trouble figuring out how to get data in and out of vim!
May 4, 2020 04:23
@nohillside vi is not my preferred interface, but it certainly has the full set of features I'd want.
May 4, 2020 04:22
@nohillside Downloading now. Thank you
May 4, 2020 01:41
@nohillside Is there a good implementation of vi for iOS?
May 3, 2020 20:23
Bike well
May 3, 2020 20:22
(Using Ask Different through the iPhone is less than delightful, and I never found a way to moderate well through it)
May 3, 2020 20:21
Especially given that I apparently need to keep using my Mac because there's not an iOS text editor that does what I want.
May 3, 2020 20:21
I think I'll be back here more
May 3, 2020 20:20
Separating content from presentation… what a concept
3
May 3, 2020 20:20
Yep
May 3, 2020 20:19
Which is why I prefer to do as much as I can in a text editor until I absolutely need to apply formatting.
May 3, 2020 20:19
WYS isn't WYG
May 3, 2020 20:17
(But seriously, the ability to go in and see all the formatting cruft and clean it up was a superpower)
May 3, 2020 20:16
I was partial to Word Perfect 5.1 for MS-DOS at the time. Reveal Codes FTW
May 3, 2020 20:16
Maybe 1983
May 3, 2020 20:15
It was pretty amazing.
May 3, 2020 20:15
I remember the first word processor I used. I was in second grade, and we had an Apple //+ in the classroom running Bank Street Writer.
May 3, 2020 20:14
When is software really itself? WYSIWYG is a pretty key trait of Word-as-we-know-it!
May 3, 2020 20:12
@bmike I think Xenix originally, but Word for Mac predates Word for Windows.
May 3, 2020 20:08
Of course Mac is Excel's original platform. Windows is a later port.
May 3, 2020 20:08
My experience of word and excel for Mac isn't bad, but I've met people with plenty of problems.

 Better tags for Ask Different

ideas and criticism of the existing tags and proposals to make...
May 7, 2020 02:13
Yes, it's all about merging things, but no one would be an expert on merging PDF pages AND Time Machine Backups AND Partitions AND folders. I'm so tempted to find a post about directions on Maps and tag it if merging lanes is involved, but you're absolutely right this tag should go.
May 7, 2020 02:11
@bmike A great example of a terrible tag because it doesn't mean anything. No common thread of what it's merging.
