lol i didn't realize "sidebars" was an entire feature

I guess apple was playing the new game of "how many times can i say 'machine learning' in a single presentation"
@JBis you forgot the „on device“ part :-)

and so begins refreshing developer.apple.com/download
These two tweets summarise my first impressions of macOS Big Sur:
https://twitter.com/marcoarment/status/1275129517615599625?s=21
> The entire OS looks like Catalyst apps now.
This is not a compliment.
https://twitter.com/mattpbarlow/status/1275130124653006848?s=21
> Everyone: “Catalyst apps look out of place, this is awful”
Apple: “Make everything look like Catalyst, got ya”
20:02
@grg my first reaction was „well, looks like they are going to bring iPadOS to the Mac“
Also, for a developer conference it seemed to lack any developer content, not even AR was a topic

@nohillside the processor switch was
@grg true
But i don't think it's that terrible
We'll see for sure soon
My favorite part was when they went "We know how important and rooted or macOS icons are to our customers and thats why we thought about it and decided to totally trash it all and replace it with the iOS ones"

Anyone have hardware shopping wisdom? I have a family member who really values stability in computing platforms. And by stability I don't mean not crashing (although that's certainly a desirable feature), but that the computer will keep running software with the same user interface and workflow snappily and reliably for many years.
The desktop computer this person currently has is a 2006 iMac, which has been used for media storage, web browsing, word processing, and some video editing. It is no longer functional for the uses for which my family member intends to use it; it is painfully slow
Waiting isn't really an option; the current hardware situation is unusable, and there are camera cards full of vacation photos waiting to be copied to the computer. But buying hardware in the last year or two of the processor family's lifecycle seems likely to get closed out of future OS releases sooner rather than later.

Any suggestions?
If you are concerned about the processor switch, don't be. I am confident Apple will support their Intel computers for the same amount of time.
@JBis great. I still have a PPC G4 that works reliably for certain tasks.
20:35
I'm surprised anything that old is still usable.

22:41
I still use my G4 for statistical analysis and for ripping or burning DVDs.
So Apple announced today the upcoming release of macOS 11.0
The end of the OS X era!
@Tetsujin I've had that happen too!
But my memory is terrible, so no surprise.

@Daniel Used 2012 Mac Mini will be plentiful and high value. I’ll probably sell mine immediately if I get a transition kit and probably anyhow when I get a new Mini. You’d be on the Catalina forever train with that. I’d get anything you know runs the current minimum you prefer and not worry about future since you already know the past.
Wow - ARM kext are going to be available in beta... developer.apple.com/documentation/apple_silicon/…
