@KarlKnechtel fair enough. You not picking up subtext still does not mean that anyone who does is a bigot. Just like seeing a Camel cigarettes ad and thinking that the camel with the sunglasses is probably supposed to make smoking seem cool and persuade viewers to smoke does not mean that the camel is my favorite animal.
Feb 10, 2023 13:06
@KarlKnechtel just because you personally aren't used to seeing racist caricatures and stereotypes - and thus fail to make the connection - does not mean that anyone who has and makes such connection is "projecting". The similarities between HP's goblins and antisemitic stereotypes is fairly evident to anyone who has ever been involuntarily subjected to old antisemitic propaganda or modern day antisemitic memes. I mean, even just the plot point "every bank is operated by this specific race of gold-loving creatures" alone raises an eyebrow for anyone who's ever heard/read a neon*zi's BS.

@Jason yeah, I definitely see there being ports along the coast, it doesn't just go from 5000+ meters to the ocean in a straight vertical line :) the mountains are impassable, but the coast is approachable.
Aug 11, 2020 12:31
@RobbieGoodwin how am I supposed to understand what is wrong with my question reading such a vague comment?
Aug 11, 2020 12:31
@Cecilia as the site automatically suggested, I edited my question to say why I feel this isn't a duplicate of the one you linked. Thank you
Aug 11, 2020 12:31
@Daron I didn't say that an "exotic answer" is required, I simply have a preference for more interesting explanations (since this is a fantasy story). Things that would make you go "aw, that's cool". As for the "only option" part, yeah, it doesn't necessarily have to be so, but I didn't want to go into specifics, since I would have to state how expensive (in time/resources/lives) the tunnel would be and so exactly how deadly the southern passage has to be. It's just simpler to just say that going south is not a viable option.
Aug 11, 2020 12:31
@KerrAvon2055 yeah that's definitely something I should have addressed explicitly, I edited the question to factor that in

Jul 29, 2020 08:30
@Erik yep, and that's a valid answer if it's complete with data and formulae :)
Jul 29, 2020 08:30
@Erik OP does point out that it's 100m wide at the top, while it starts off as 1.5km wide at the base. So it is surely very visible even from afar, at least up to a certain point

Oct 18, 2018 13:30
I'm really curious: how did you answer the questions? It might be helpful for somebody who ends up in the same situation to know it, since apparently you fared well.

Oct 12, 2018 15:56
@HopelessN00b Tungsten currently costs about $20/lb. A cubed kilometer of solid tungsten would weigh about 1.92 x 10^13 kg, or 4.233 x 10^13 lb. Since it's hollow, let's say it's a tenth of that mass, so 4.233 x 10^12 pounds (about 4233 billion pounds). This cube would have a cost of 84 thousand billion dollars. A little under 17 thousand times larger than my 5B budget, or almost 5 times the GDP of the USA.
Oct 12, 2018 15:56
@CausticHarmony See "Location constraints" and the part about what knowledge the denizens will have.
Oct 12, 2018 15:56
@PaulJohnson Soldiers will only have access to regular weapons and armor from their time, not modern weaponry
Oct 12, 2018 15:56
@PaulJohnson I was sure I had specified they can't, but it turns out I hadn't. I edited to clarify
Oct 12, 2018 15:56
I added more info and constraints as asked. @Shadowzee: see "location constraints"
Oct 12, 2018 15:56
@bukwyrm I edited the question, hope it's clearer
Oct 12, 2018 15:56
@bukwyrm Anything that doesn't need modern knowledge to be maintained is OK (so food is ok). 1) How long did sieges last in the 1200s? 2) As many as possible without compromising security and provisions. 3-4) Must function the same as pretty much any fortress from the middle ages. So, yes to all of these
Oct 12, 2018 15:56
@AlexP Post it as an answer :P

@CortAmmon Convince our science-loving citizen that the cities are indeed the home of the Gods, and see how difficult it is even when this belief that the cities are mortal creations is held by a single person this approach to understanding the problem is nothing short of brilliant. +1

Apr 27, 2018 10:18
@nikie Then it doesn't have enough comments and documentation. And you generally do not want to be implementing your own encryption algorithm afaik. (I know it was just an example, but still)

Apr 24, 2018 22:32
@mcalex That's it, I'm going to call my future son Balthazar McUnique.

Feb 23, 2018 15:28
@WernerCD Mh, I don't know, still feels kind of too easy. Plus, the magic system I've devised so far does not allow resurrection. Maybe I can give them high healing abilities though, to the point that you'll only be able to definitively kill one if you stab it through the heart/brain/"regeneration-organ"
Feb 23, 2018 11:33
@WernerCD That would defeat the whole idea of them having a serious risk of going extinct, unfortunately
Feb 22, 2018 17:12
@HopelessN00b You are right, but I feel like it would be a lot "bigger": in the real world's wars, it's always humans against humans, and the biggest threat is usually having your town/city destroyed and your family killed. If its one species against another, and the stakes are potentially losing your entire race and culture, I think it would matter much more to each individual. Also keep in mind that we're not talking about humans, but people who have lived for thousands of years and so have a completely different perspective (and are better able to see the bigger picture)
Feb 22, 2018 17:12
@VilleNiemi Yes, that would be absolutely true if the god was "still there" (or, better put, if they had signs he was). In his absence, though, with their collective wisdom (I mean, they have thousands of years of experience) I figure they'll have at least some pride in their race as a whole other than in themselves, so they will want to prevent their culture from being wiped out. But the quest to find the missing god is definitely in my plans :)
Feb 22, 2018 17:12
@ajnatorixzersolar I'm mostly looking for a "natural" reason for being fighty (for example, Halo8tds's answer about the need for resources) to avoid just saying "yeah the god wanted them fighty so they're fighty"
Feb 22, 2018 17:12
@Baldrickk You're right. I edited to emphasize it more :)
Feb 22, 2018 17:12
@skout I'm still figuring them out :) but I'm thinking of a humanoid ant-like vermin race and a cave-dwelling dwarf-like race that mostly feeds from mushrooms and has a body covered with mushrooms
Feb 22, 2018 17:12
@CortAmmon That's what I wanted to convey by saying not only the obvious ones like being forced to choose between a defensive war and annihilation: I want them to be generally fighty, not just engage in war because they have no other option
Feb 22, 2018 17:12
@Raditz_35 You're right, I did forget that without life and death there's no evolution and thus no spontaneous "growth" of survival instincts. I would still think that the god would give them at least a little self-preservation instinct, to avoid having its creation completely destroy itself in little time.

Feb 23, 2018 07:28
@TomGoodfellow I hate to play the devil's advocate here, but filing DMCA takedowns towards conspiracy videos would be a sure-fire way of getting more people to believe in conspiracy theories, thanks to the Streisand effect, so I'd say that the existance of the videos on YouTube is not proof of the falsehood of conspiracy theories. Thankfully, there's a lot of proof that they are BS.

Feb 19, 2018 09:00
Ah, it was McDoubles, not Big Macs. I suppose those cost less.
Feb 19, 2018 08:56
I'm mostly surprised by the fact that he could get 75 Big Macs with just 100$. Where I live, that would have cost at least 300 euros lol

Feb 2, 2018 12:27
@KalleMP A ram pump reeks of progress.
Feb 2, 2018 12:27
@RonJohn Well to be fair, who said there are other animals living in the jungle? I don't know, maybe it's a swampy area and only amphibians can thrive there. Only the OP can tell us, tho
Feb 2, 2018 12:27
@RonJohn What I understand is this: the castle, high up above the trees, has a brisk and pleasant fresh breeze, while pack animals die from disease because the jungle below is dangerous/hostile/has lots of mosquitos carrying deadly illnesses

Jan 25, 2018 18:04
@LordFarquaad My guess is that a rocky planet with such an enormous mass could not exist. It would have to be a gas giant, and then it would transform into a star anyway due to the extreme gravity and pressure
Jan 25, 2018 18:04
@RBarryYoung Didn't know something like that existed. Thanks!
Jan 25, 2018 18:04
@DonaldHobson Thank you! That helps

Jan 25, 2018 18:04
There were a lot of good answers, but I'm accepting this one since it's the most complete and on point (and I hadn't taken the star's apparent size and luminosity into account). Thanks @L.Dutch! :)
Jan 25, 2018 18:04
@Marandil That would be interesting, but I doubt it would be feasible. I'll wait for someone more knowledgeable than me to say, though :)

The Nineteenth Byte: General discussion for codegolf.stackexc...
Jun 21, 2017 09:24
I thought it could be ok since you can also use custom C++ modules in node
Jun 21, 2017 09:24
Is is a bad idea in your opinion?
Jun 21, 2017 09:23
I'm working on a KOTH challenge (link if you're interested: codegolf.meta.stackexchange.com/a/12742/69121) and I wanted to make it a JavaScript challenge since it's my favourite language and is also really easy, so I implemented the controller as a Node.JS program that runs submissions as modules
Jun 21, 2017 09:22
Good morning guys :)
