Q: Coating / waxing / oiling old wood without darkening it

dimI make sculptures (well, I try to, anyway) with old wood that I find in the forest. I strip and sand them heavily until I reach the "good" wood underneath the bad parts, but the remaining wood is still usually kind of porous, and has a dusty look, although it is actually clean. At that point, the...

@Nelson "SUVs [...] were missing a LOT of safety features, so an SUV tends to roll over and paralyze the occupants instead of outright killing them" What? Are you considering that killing the occupants (rather than "just" paralyzing them) is a "safety feature"? Are you suggesting that car manufacturers take specific measures to ensure the people are most likely killed, rather than made paralyzed, in case of a serious crash?

Ok, guys... I haven't been actively playing with electronics in the last couple of years, and when I heard "chip shortage", I thought it just had impact for the graphic card manufacturers or that crypto-mining bullshit. But it actually seems this is for real. There's no chip left on mouser or anywhere else...
Where on earth can you possibly buy a couple of STM32, or MCUs like this in small quantities as of now?

@C.Lange Buy a large stock of NE5532. Scrape the marking on them. Buy a custom stamp with the TI logo and "OPA1612" written on it, and some white paint. Rebrand the chips. Make an offer on ebay for 5$ each. Be sure to put keywords such as "best souding opamp ever - ultra low noise - ultra low distortion - audiophile-grade" in the description. Profit. While you're at it, you can sell some fake capacitors too.

@X4748 Seriously, Google. You can start there. learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/transistors/…
dim
Jul 2, 2019 09:48
@X4748 There is an infinity of variants of circuits where a transistor is used as a switch. Some of those may suit your needs, some other won't. You need to give much more details about you requirements (voltages involved, type of load, ...) if you want us to make sure it will work in your situation. Otherwise, just google "transistor as a switch" and take any random circuit that comes up.

@KingDuken Don't worry, I'm not ashamed, and I don't have regrets for my comments on the post. This kind of discussion on the internet can't really affect me, you gotta try really hard for that. The thing I could eventually have regrets for is having brought that here, though, if that is the cause of his suspension.

@W5VO Thanks. And I agree for the anonymous downvotes. But I had a similar exchange with him a few month ago, which actually did not end that bad (this one: electronics.stackexchange.com/a/386883/107479). So I thought it could be constructive... Well, this time it wasn't, but it doesn't matter, and I'll leave him alone. But now I see he has been suspended? Was it because of this? If it is, I'm a bit embarrassed, though. I haven't been offended by what he said or anything.

@W5VO Thanks. I was wondering if the timeline actually always disclosed migration information, or if there was cases where it was lost by the system, or... I don't know. Anyway, that will be left unexplained, but it doesn't matter much.
dim
Apr 15, 2019 08:36
EinerA, who wrote an answer to it (now deleted), claims that his answer was written before some migration occurred, but I couldn't find any reference to a migration event in the timeline or revision history. I carefully checked this before downvoting, flagging and commenting, because I didn't want to be harsh, had the post originated from another stack. But it didn't seem to be the case, so.... And I just rechecked, and still can't see anything. How is it possible?

@W5VO @NickAlexeev Just so you know, I have summoned Catija again to solve the disagreements that has certainly taken way too much proportions: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/7245893#7245893

Sep 9, 2018 19:57
@NickAlexeev Thanks for clarifying. I still think it isn't a fair idea. Also, if the aim was simply to exclude people passing by who have never actively participated in this site at all (which I can understand a bit better, although I really think it is not necessary), then the term "large caliber" was really confusing.
dim
Sep 7, 2018 08:59
Now, let me blow your mind: High rep people are not actually necessary for this site to work. What would happen if all high rep people (whatever the rep limit) stopped answering? Lower rep people would still answer, without compromising on the quality. The only difference is that "large caliber" people answer faster, because they spend more time on this site. This is perfectly fine, but I don't see why this has to be taken in consideration when deciding the rules here.
dim
Sep 7, 2018 08:35
What would you think of a democracy saying "Well, let's give the rich people a higher weigh in their vote. They're the one who produce wealth in this country, so if we want our country to continue growing, we have to trust them more than other people"?
dim
Sep 7, 2018 08:30
I was wondering why you asked us to provide, in a comment, the exact reason of our vote. Now that I have read this, I realize it was mainly to know who voted, and in which way. I am just amazed.
dim
Sep 7, 2018 08:23
So, for example, who do you consider large caliber, in the people who answered the poll? Is a 50k rep guy just looking for points more important than a 2k rep guy that has produce fewer, but high quality answers? What about another 3k rep guy that spend a lot of time in the review queues cleaning up the site, without any fanfare or publicity?
dim
Sep 7, 2018 08:23
@Nick Not sure if it's appropriate to add my two cents to this discussion, but since it's public... I just read the "let's give more weight to large caliber contributors" part, and I was a bit stunned.

You should actually ask him. This makes a perfectly valid and potentially very interesting question for an interview. If he seems embarassed and comes up with excuses, then it's a red flag. If he confidently gives some of the valid explanations given in the below answers, then you have no reason to exclude this candidate.
