Good to know.

It gets a mention.

@Jakobian Actually the book does not deal with Banach spaces in general, but I think I am going to read up on that sooner or later.

@MartinSleziak Thank you for all the paraphrases. Yes, I think I get the idea.

This is from Sadri Hassani's Mathematical Physics. In Proposition 2.5.5, I get why "If T is surjective, then T∗ is injective", but I don't get why "If T is injective, then T∗ is surjective". Could anyone help me with that?

it damaged/benefited others too. but the backlash had to come from within.
Mar 2 21:02
the US bruised itself in the globalization process. it festered. i think that part of the story is easily overlooked.

taxes are part of the story, but that's too isolated a view for capturing what a global phase looks like
Mar 2 20:54
these changes are entangled with global trends in these sectors

Sectors of the U.S. economy as a percentage of GDP between 1947 and 2009

@Cerberus how so?
Mar 2 20:49
but Europe was not the top master in this stage
Mar 2 20:49
@Cerberus oh this effect was felt in europe too
Mar 2 20:48
it's a historical process: china coming onboard economically, the ussr losing its grip, etc.
Mar 2 20:46
@Cerberus just from this one, no. it was meant as an indication.
Mar 2 20:46
free trade, reining in welfare and protection, etc
Mar 2 20:45
by internal losers i mean those who lost their share of the global economic growth because of the global neoliberal order
Mar 2 20:44
Mar 2 20:38
let me find a useful chart and come back
Mar 2 20:37
@Cerberus i think there's an economic aspect that is unclear to outsiders. trump can use china to play with the US's internal losers in the global neoliberal order. it's an ugly game played over time. i think its significance is clear to fewer outsiders.
Mar 2 20:31
@M.A.R. if you found any interesting ones do recommend!
Mar 2 20:30
a friend asked me why trump doesn't do the same with xi as with putin. i said that's the darker part of the story from the outside of the US. and then i started thinking it's probably the darker part from the inside too.
Mar 2 20:29
or that conflicts with china flare up: economically and geopolitically
Mar 2 20:28
that's one way to imagine it.
Mar 2 20:27
yeah but this was like decades in the making
Mar 2 20:26
i wouldn't know, really.
Mar 2 20:16
if we were to define neoliberalism as a global historical phase, i think we would do well to define it as that phase which just ended. there's still the nation-state, the empire, capitalism. but neoliberalism is over.
Feb 28 03:22
or for fun, at least.
Feb 28 03:22
i see that puzzles are receiving some interest here. maybe i should try it as a routine.
Feb 28 03:15
hmm. it does seem like a frustrating open question.
Feb 28 03:15
@Mitch as for the message, wouldn't it suffice to say that when the machine "gets something correct", it is on a purely formal surface, and any comparison between its underlying dynamics and that of the brain is an open question?

@Cerberus i relish those on ice cream

@CowperKettle what i find fascinating about it is that the story of his life is so visibly fallible and yet he's trying so hard to get things across consistently. it's a beautiful struggle, regardless of the degree of success.
Feb 26 02:33
*not language itself
Feb 26 02:31
it's a representation
Feb 26 02:30
@Mitch linguists say writing is not language
Feb 26 02:27
@jlliagre he says he intends it (or the parts of it i've read so far) for the non-mathematician, which is a boon for me too, since i can't grasp his contribution to math either.
Feb 25 14:40
@jlliagre interesting. what do you think, generally and at first glance, about the writing style?
Feb 25 14:34
@M.A.R. hey MAR :) happy to see you! for now i'm mostly reading and taking notes and going on walls and stuff for a bit. what about you?
Feb 25 14:31
@Xanne nice to see you too! thank you.
Feb 25 03:13
salut!
