It's nice to see that there are a bunch of people voting. I wasn't sure what kind of turnout to expect.
Jul 7, 2020 02:29
@RebeccaJ.Stones I also struggle with my listening skills. I've tried watching some shows in Mandarin on Netflix, but it's a struggle. Have either of you found useful strategies?

OK, so that's all related to the question you asked. The other topic is the tone of these comments. Tone is hard to read in text. As I read through these comments, it seems to me that @droooze was annoyed about another translation question getting posted and wrote some unfriendly comments. Not really rude, but definitely not friendly. @Bafforasta seemed surprised and annoyed that this question got complaints that other questions hadn't. Then both of you start insulting each other more and more. I've deleted a few of the comments that were particularly inappropriate.
Oct 16, 2019 05:13
I have put the question on hold for now. If you want to edit the question to make it more specific about one or two certain terms that were translated strangely, you can then click the "reopen" button. Also, you could discuss the current policy on translation questions here in chat or on the Meta site question I linked above. If the community decides to change the policy, I'll be happy to reopen your question.
Oct 16, 2019 05:06
As for your specific question, @Bafforasta, I think it's off topic for the current definition of the site's policy. There's a little too much text for a translation question (several sentences), and although you did include an English translation, you didn't put in that effort yourself.
Oct 16, 2019 04:57
I'm sorry you hit an unclear spot in our site policy, @Bafforasta, and we didn't do a good job of explaining it. If people want to discuss the current policy or suggest changes, this question is a good place to do that:

Greetings, @Bafforasta and others. Because this conversation went on for a while, I've moved it to a chat room.

Nice problem, @OmegaKrypton. I found the same WorDonimoes solution as @Stiv, but I didn't get the "\\" hint until I looked at his answer. Then I wondered if his word needed a "BACKS" prefix, but I see you've accepted his answer, so I must be overthinking it.
Aug 10, 2019 05:20
Ah, I see! I'll go try solving it.
Aug 10, 2019 05:17
@OmegaKrypton I'm sorry your WorDonimoes puzzle had a flaw, @OmegaKrypton. I'd be happy to collaborate if you'd like to try making another one.

With zhuyin fuhao, I had to learn everything new. Of course, it's still a lot easier to learn than all the characters.
Jun 19, 2015 03:52
As an English speaker, I already knew how to pronounce most of the sounds in pinyin, except for new ones like Q and IU.
Jun 19, 2015 03:51
@RexYuan I found it much harder to learn zhuyin fuhao than pinyin, @RexYuan.

I don't see any reason not to participate, so I don't think we need to do anything.

@growler, @xiaohouzi79, @Alenanno, I got the e-mail about that Winter Bash hat thing.
Nov 30, 2012 17:15
so I didn't push it.
Nov 30, 2012 17:15
but @xiaohouzi79 was against it, and nobody else said anything,
Nov 30, 2012 17:15
You and I were for it, @Alenanno,
Nov 13, 2012 20:48
Anyone else is welcome to comment as well.
Nov 13, 2012 20:48
@Alenanno and @xiaohouzi79, any thoughts on the Winter Bash / Hat Dash that Stack Exchange will be running? It sounds like fun to me, I suggest our site participate.
Jun 17, 2012 05:08
Yes, @Alenanno, we talked about some places we might mention the site to draw traffic. @Huang might write some blog posts in Chinese on related topics and post some questions in Chinese on the site. That might draw more native speakers.

Jun 16, 2012 14:51
All right, @Huang, I have to head to Chinese class, now. It's been great chatting with you, I always love reading your answers on the site.
Jun 16, 2012 14:50
That would be great. Everybody learns something.
Jun 16, 2012 14:49
It's all in French, and nobody complained.
Jun 16, 2012 14:49
Here's the top question on French Language Stack Exchange, french.stackexchange.com/q/1546
Jun 16, 2012 14:48
It'll be good practice for me, and raise the level of the site, I think.
Jun 16, 2012 14:47
Are any of your friends interested in Chinese language? Start a few questions strictly in Chinese, and I'll try to provide English summaries to the questions and answers.
Jun 16, 2012 14:42
@Huang?
Jun 16, 2012 14:42
What kind of topics were you thinking of blogging about, @H
Jun 16, 2012 14:41
We take courses at a local college.
Jun 16, 2012 14:41
I have a family connection to China, but none of us are native speakers, so our whole family is learning together.
Jun 16, 2012 14:39
I wonder if ChinesePod would be interested in talking to one of us on one of their podcasts.
Jun 16, 2012 14:29
Welcome back, @QAzer.
Jun 16, 2012 14:28
I haven't had that problem. I tell you what, @Huang, if you see links that don't work for you, then either post a comment asking for a description of what's at the link, or flag the answer for moderator attention and add a note saying you can't see that site. Then we'll know which sites need a little summary added.
Jun 16, 2012 14:24
I just visited youku.com, and it's slow, but I can watch the video if I wait a while before starting.
Jun 16, 2012 14:20
I think we can see Chinese sites OK.
Jun 16, 2012 14:20
Are there Chinese video hosting sites that would work for you?
Jun 16, 2012 14:19
OK, @Huang, posting related videos on youtube doesn't work for you, but how about the main Stack Exchange site? Does your connection to that work well?
Jun 16, 2012 14:16
Oh, right. What kind of connection problems do you see?
Jun 16, 2012 14:15
is fine.
Jun 16, 2012 14:15
Yes, I just checked chinese.stackexchange.com/…, and posting the question and answer in Chinese.
Jun 16, 2012 14:14
If you were to post questions and answers summarizing some of their topics on our site, it might draw traffic from native speakers. Posting completely in Chinese is fine, I think.
Jun 16, 2012 14:12
Sounds good, @Huang. Do you know of any other people who write about the Chinese language in Chinese? I'm imagining the Chinese equivalent of languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll.
Jun 16, 2012 14:10
That link is to our "greatest hits" list.
Jun 16, 2012 14:09
Another option is to go through chinese.stackexchange.com/questions/greatest-hits and then Google discussions of the same topics on other forum sites and post links to our questions.
Jun 16, 2012 14:08
It's hard to find many questions, though.
Jun 16, 2012 14:07
One thing I've tried is to dig through chinese-forums.com and look for unanswered or interesting questions. Then post the question here and then post a link at the chinese-forums.com if we get good answers.
