In regards to the high capital spending, what percentage does this contribute to the higher costs? Do college sports generate revenue or are partly subsidized by student fees? Paying a coach $1M sounds ridiculous.

You have to consider that if you have 1-2 children and you send them to a reputable US university that will cost you easily around $200k.

If your offer is to work in London then expect to have a 30 year mortgage to buy house or do very long commutes. Salaries in academia have not kept up with the cost of living in the major European capitals. I would never accept a job in London Paris or Madrid just to make a few examples on a regular academic salary, there would just be too many compromises. But yes you would get the "culture" of the big-city.

I think you are really underestimating the amount of tax you pay in the US. I have a couple of friends who are professors and make our own 100k per year and the pay up to 50% in tax. It also depends on which US state.

You could also look at funding obained

I am sorry to hear, it must have been an incredibly stressful experience. Other people have already answer but my advice is to NEVER EVER book with these 3rd party travel agents! Not even if you save 100-200-300 euros. They are just parasites not offering any real service.

@deviantfan who are you the savior of the naive? Are you a san franciscan trying to save the world? Would you feel guilty if you didn't give a lecture to the OP? He/she didn't ask for any of that and doesn't need your armchair advice. Don't you think that the people offering the logistic services would ask a question or two before giving a ride to someone to Antarctica?
Oct 14, 2019 22:55
@deviantfan The OP came here to ask a question not to get lectured about the danger of going on a expedition.

Is this really happening in Australia?! It sounds more like some other country...

there are many ways to go to a conference on a low-budget, you could also make a short holiday out of it. Usually students have low registration fees, I never stayed in a hotel when I went to a conference during my PhD, I simply didn't have any money.

@Allure I have heard that at every election, than 99% of people stick around. Lives go on mostly as usual...

copyright does not mean freely available, it seems you don't understand the concept of copyright.

I have never heard in Europe that a textbook is necessary to get a position, maybe he was being sarcastic
May 23, 2018 19:08
@KonradRudolph can you provide a reference? There are many with the same last name.

And nobody has made a good argument for it
May 23, 2018 06:51
You are getting off the main issue, this question does not belong on ASE.
May 22, 2018 14:38
@LateralTerminal I completely understand what you are saying, but why not close it or even delete it? It seems really a clickbait question and why are mods letting in off the hook?
May 22, 2018 09:39
@LateralTerminal why should the educators POV different than any other people? Nobody has made a real argument as to why this question should stay open. And why are so many people voting on something unrelated it's puzzling. I guess people really like these questions.
May 21, 2018 19:49
Not again this question/topic! Let's close this and use the appropriate Stack to ask this question. As soon as there is some gossip question people are all over the place...

The GRE is a classic US example of how a useless standard is promoted as something needed just to create a huge revenue.

It seems an answer for someone who has not gone to driving school. What are those number 3 2 1 on my gear stick?!?!?

Feb 15, 2018 17:30
Not every PhD student is someone just coming out of undergrad school, in fact the mean age of PhD students is higher than that.

HTML is a step forward, however it does not work very well off-line,, because images are not embedded in the file and need to be saved in a separate folder.

Sorry but when there are questions like this I can't help asking for proof so we can judge ourselves. These things are too subjective.

I think so many of these answers are totally irrelevant to this case, and quite obvious, they seems to explain why pirating software is bad or illegal.

What are the copyright laws in YOUR country? Some countries do not have any laws on software copyright.
