Nothing heard -
Sep 14, 2016 12:28
@enderland unless you wanted to add something or ask a question, I need to get ready for work now. What brings tou here, friend?
Sep 14, 2016 12:26
- I am supportive when it seems obvious to do so (someone struggling with a door or something) but otherwise, I just observe. Perhaps most people do not make use of their built-in abilities to observe?

@Lilienthal Human reaction and behavior is very tenuous. My Guru says that Love is Acceptance, Respect and Trust. I aim to love everyone equally, so I give them that. As a Hetaira Personality, of course I can see people's emotions and a lot of what is going on for them. Such personal insight makes me even more reticent to badger them.
Sep 14, 2016 12:22
@Lilienthal I fail to see a distinction that does not exist. All appearance is deeply personal, there is no sphere (except family or friends) where it may be inquired in to. I read that the turban is a Sikh symbol of connection with one's Guru, which is personal beyond even giving birth to someone. It is never to be pried in to, no matter what. Did you see the Star Trek episode where spock mind-melded with the vulcan woman? Like that.
Sep 14, 2016 12:20
@Lilienthal What is "normal conversation" between men and women? Most people worldwide would say that there is no such thing. At some times and places in the US or UK, we somehow overlooked male-female differences, which is noce, if you can get it, but it is not the norm, and likely will not be for a long time. I am acting so as to protect my job. Also, I have curiosity about people, but learned to stifle its expression long ago.
Sep 14, 2016 12:18
@Lilienthal Wow, concrete logic such as I find on SE always completely pulls the rug from under me. No, my contention is that anyone may wear whatever they wish subject to the dress code or needs of the place, without having to explain themselves. Would you really wish it to be otherwise?

Sep 13, 2016 17:05
@DA01 My thought was that because we cannot control the user's device specs, we should just opt out of some situations. The early web design was for HTML to be rendered in whatever way the device was able, with the understanding that some things would not happen. No one tried to convert photos to ASCII Art to render on a terminal. So I say: if the shoe doesn't fit, don't try to force it on, just give up at that point. Failure is an option.
Sep 13, 2016 17:02
Thank you also.
Sep 13, 2016 16:31
Are we the only ones who can see this? Doesn't matter I guess. There is a chatroom born every minute.
Sep 13, 2016 16:30
A market economy is not going to work for very much longer, but that is a different issue. Time for lunch.
Sep 13, 2016 16:28
I teach my students about why database designers have a different perspective from programmers. They need not conflict, but without enough understanding, they do. This is pretty much what you are saying: no one has enough brainpower to have an overall vision. The solution is to simplify things, and sacrifice something. The web went the wrong direction when they tried to control every pixel. It was a fool's crusade.
Sep 13, 2016 16:26
@DA01 The conflict is there because of the egos, as you say, so Buddhism is the cure for that. Nonduality is a better cure. The issue is created by the need to get products to market quickly, in the presence of competition. The Apollo program worked well and fast, but it was not a competition.
Sep 13, 2016 16:22
@DA01 So UX people are often at odds with programmers? "Why can't we all get along?" When I was a programmer, more than 15 years ago, I was often arguing for things that were "good enough" and would save massive amounts of effort. But they sacrificed details that some people thought were important, so for the most part I did not make any converts. It is just interesting to see it swing the other way.

Jul 30, 2016 22:10
@Pharap It sounds like the movie "Brazil". Wait, that was England, not part of EU...
Jul 30, 2016 22:10
Laurie Anderson: "Because when Love is gone, there's always Justice. And when Justice is gone, there's always Force. And when Force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!" +1 for using morality.

This is what I thought of when I read the title, I had never heard "Role Playing Game" as an acronym: RPG (Report Program Generator) is a programming language that originated as a report-building program used in DEC and IBM minicomputer operating systems and evolved into a fully procedural programming language. A BLOG about it would seem really strange, like designing a robot to ride a horse.

Jul 15, 2016 14:34
Perhaps loaves and fishes (and wine) would work just as well.

Jul 15, 2016 11:12
It might be cheaper in the long run to move to another country. Maybe that is why so many people came to the US? "Let them eat cake" is not cheap.

Jun 30, 2016 01:54
@AmyBlankenship I guess I have to let this die out now, as it does not seem to be converging on something that is enlightening for me. I simply find it awkward that their attempts to avoid awkwardness by making polite conversation cause me to feel awkward that I cannot respond in an open and clear way. It seems to be a sort of paradox! As someone I know said, "Attempting to avoid conflict creates conflict." I need to embrace feeling uncomfortable and thrown off-balance, I suppose.
Jun 30, 2016 01:54
@MaskedMan ... except, as I said, when she stops in, or when her son is here after he leaves work (every day for the summer). I can not mention. But can they please not ask? When they do ask, what do I say? I can't stop them from asking.
Jun 30, 2016 01:54
@Brandin - somehow, the point of this entire discussion turns on the deep discomfort I have for needing to relate differently with different groups of people... "Refraining to mention" works fine for me, uttering words that cannot be equally said to everyone does not. I simply wish that people would restrain their urge to ask! Why do they not do this?
Jun 30, 2016 01:54
@Brandin, I do know when I am getting married, I am just not happy with the circumstances that cause me to have to do it this way, nor with the way the explanation makes me feel. I used to call my former wife "Songollay" (Beloved of my heart in Quechua) but she didn't like it. I used to call my Guru "My Lady", but she asked me to stop and use her name instead. "Partner" always seemed like a business term to me. Other answers in the linked question mainly try to placate for the use of "girlfriend", so I guess I am stuck with that, even though she does not like it. Rather not have to say.
Jun 30, 2016 01:54
@MaskedMan OK. I will agree with you, if you give me a reasonable term by which I can refer to her. Saying nothing is not an option, people know that we are together and spend a lot of time together. So what magic word will head off the question, which is not a lie or seemingly shameful (girlfriend seems out of place for people 5 decades old)? With all respect to everyone here, this is exactly why I say so very little about myself at work. It got awkward when I had surgery, was out for weeks, and people wanted to visit me in the hospital, or deliver food to my apartment.
Jun 30, 2016 01:54
That woman who stops by pretty often, and her son who comes by after he's done working so I can drop him off at home. No one will be the wiser...
Jun 30, 2016 01:54
@JaneS Thank you. It is a rant. I removed it.
Jun 30, 2016 01:54
@haylem Sure. But at work, I am not able to run away. This makes it workplace-related.
Jun 30, 2016 01:54
@JoeStrazzere Yes, thank you. I had carefully read that. It seems to me, that my situation is different, because "everybody" talks about their upcoming wedding, and I have to endure two more years of evading to answer. I can't blame them for asking, but I don't feel like answering either. Deflection just causes it to be asked again eventually.

Jun 29, 2016 21:47
But is the larger one half empty, or half full at that point?

Jun 29, 2016 17:46
@Jeff.Clark: it is crucial to distinguish spoken and written language. The 10000 ways that O is used is just a stupid artifact, it is not the English Language. O is O is O, no one is ever confused when they hear it. (Just try to keep it down, though, OK?)

 English Language & Usage: Multi-Layer

Not for the faint of heart or those easily triggered by Englis...
Jun 28, 2016 13:56
Some are more equal than others.
Jun 28, 2016 13:56
Or swimourously.
Jun 28, 2016 13:56
Parallel Butterflies?
Jun 28, 2016 13:55
I wonder what "Parallel Universe" means? Or "Parallel lines"? "Unparalleled"? I can't think of a same time example.
Jun 28, 2016 13:52
@Cerberus Well, you've got three heads, it should be no problem for you. And if anyone disagrees, you can just eat them.
Jun 27, 2016 23:19
@Cerberus It really does not matter whom, as long as they do the job correctly.
Jun 27, 2016 22:43
I like how it says "not the room you are looking for?" I guess it isn't.
Jun 27, 2016 22:42
You are welcome. I hope it actually addressed your question.
Jun 27, 2016 22:41
@stack Am I supposed to reply? The first sounds like a non-English native speaker. The second, engineering. The third, Manager-speak.
Jun 27, 2016 22:37
I did say to someone recently that rates of violent crime are going down.
Jun 27, 2016 22:37
Engineer meets Godzilla, I guess.
Jun 27, 2016 22:36
People always counter that there is "no one in charge" of things like language globally. I say, well, put someone in charge.
Jun 27, 2016 22:35
As a former programmer, I like to say that we would have been better off with more standardization early on. Goes for language also.
Jun 27, 2016 22:34
How about that MEtris system, eh?
Jun 27, 2016 22:34
You first.
Jun 27, 2016 22:34
I wasn't saying I wasn an expert, I don't even know it. I was Zhust Zaying, we should Ztanderdize
Jun 27, 2016 22:33
God. IPA. Ugh.
Jun 27, 2016 22:32
I don't know how to say "aɪpieɪ"
Jun 27, 2016 22:32
Sort of... Not sure about the last consonat?
Jun 27, 2016 22:31
Gosh. I had an O gauge train and gave it away. Hard word to spell. like Tongue.
