obviously we disagree a lot about what is desirable. In spite of what
you write, I cannot see anything wrong with the way PO is handling this.
And I dont see how talking more could really change that.

Best wishes

Dear @EmilioPisanty
May 3, 2017 17:20
Of course we can keep talking about further improvements of the site (and other things) here. I will keep informing our team including our system developer, and we will make a to-do list he can work on after the migration. So thanks for your comments and suggestions so far!
May 3, 2017 17:17
As our migration to the University of Bielefeld will take place soon if everything goes well, our system developer said that any changes have to be delayed after the hopefully successful migration.
He also said that the URLs of the SE profiles did not get saved until now, because the links to those profiles can be found in the attributions to any contribution by those interested.
May 3, 2017 17:16
Second, the user profiles contain useful information about the contributions (questions, answers, and comments) that are available on PO from each user, which is part of the standard site navigation. This gives somebody who likes a question or an answer he has read the possibility to search for more contributions of the same author.
May 3, 2017 17:16
@EmilioPisanty we keep the imported user profiles visible and functional in order to give people the possibility to see and search for them, reclaim their accounts, and content and start to contribute to PO with a non-trivial amount of rep (and therefore privileges) if they feel like doing so. It is meant to be a service for those who want to join PO.
May 2, 2017 19:13
Hi again @EmilioPisanty in the context of our discussion yesterday, we have changed the text that appears on all imported and not reclaimed user accounts, as you can see for example here. Do you think it is better now?
May 1, 2017 21:46
And it is becoming a bit late here, almost midnight so I have to prepare for sleep. But I will happily come back here sometimes tomorrow to continue the discussion.
May 1, 2017 21:44
Ok Emilio, I will have to think about these things a bit ...
May 1, 2017 21:27
I guess you mean this thread. The specific requests of Prof. Clark got resolved and the issue got then dropped...
May 1, 2017 21:14
Do you think there are still CC license violations at present?
May 1, 2017 21:14
Hm ok...
May 1, 2017 21:09
Yes not everything went to my personal liking, PO lived through its "Age of Chaos" which almost killed it, things can still be improved but the site now runs stable and peacefully. We will also move to the University of Bielefeld. Can you tell a bit more about what important details got neglected as you see it?
May 1, 2017 20:59
Probably true ...
May 1, 2017 20:55
I really apologize for insulting you (if this was the case at times, would have to reread the thicket) because I generally rather like and appreciate you.
May 1, 2017 20:54
If you would like to know why I got so terribly frustrated back then, I would prefer explaining this to you by email (my adress is for example [email protected]) because it is very personal and too private to discuss here.
May 1, 2017 20:52
Concerning the thread at Lubos: I got then terribly frustrated and upset about how things were going on Physics SE, and it might well be that I misunderstood more things than just the thread you clarified to me. Are there more specific things we should talk about from that thread? Anyway, I am not proud of the things I said there and yes, apologizing for that is a good thing so I'd like to say sorry indeed.
May 1, 2017 20:44
Hi @EmilioPisanty thanks for the kind invitation to here and the explanations of what you meant by this thread. Reconsidering it I completely misunderstood it indeed, so I transformed my old downvote into an upvote...

@MAFIA36790 yes I am in conversation with him. I previously gave the wrong link, I meant to say he can be privately messaged here.
Nov 8, 2016 09:18
@SirCumference and others who want to talk to Ocelo7: he can be reached in the comments of his blog or he can be private messaged here

Nov 5, 2016 18:57
For example if a new policy gets created concerning links to the new external Physics Problem Solving community, to be fair and unbiased those rules should then hold for any other external site including PO too ...
Nov 5, 2016 18:52
Of cours, digging up the old issues does probably not help in achieving a future peaceful coexistance. All that I would ask for is PO stops getting treated in a special negative biased way compared to any other SE-external source of useful information such as Wikipedia, Quora, PhysicsForums, nLabe, blogs of physicists, etc ...
Nov 5, 2016 18:47
Yes Arnold Neumaier also sometimes gives educational links to answers on PO and he did not (yet?) get banned for it, maybe because he also answers some questions from time to time.
Nov 5, 2016 18:44
@rob this is not the only instance where PO got a spedial treatment for example here here links to the whole SE-external internet are allowed, whereas my answer (and some other's answers saying that Physics Problem Solving questions if at the right level would be welcome on PhysicsOverflow get continuously deleted by moderators upon first sight. The question was even retroactively modified to justify this course of action ...
Nov 5, 2016 12:48
After the initial turbulent times we really would like to see a peaceful and at least neutral coexistance of the two communities, as Arnold Neumaier tried to explain also here. But this can only happen, if both sides seriously want it unfortunately ...
Nov 5, 2016 12:39
I still strongly feel that giving PhysicsOverflow this "special treatment" is very biased and unfair to say the least. Dmckee even wrote a special script to find all links to the site.
Nov 5, 2016 12:35
@rob the happenings mentioned by Emilio in the comments below his answer here was what really broke things for me personally on Physics SE. I mean, why does PhysicsOverflow get a "special treatment" such that summerizing and linking to useful on-topic posts there in comments is spam and ban-worthy, whereas summarizing and linking to posts on Wikipedia, physics blogs, PhysicsForums, Quora, etc is ok and even approved?
Nov 2, 2016 11:47
And I hate the fact that you can not retroactively correct typos in chat comments here ... ! Some characteristics of the SE software are really not helpful to say the least.
Nov 2, 2016 11:42
Your try to save it on Meta is in my personal opinion a very good move, however I doubt that it will succeed. If am considering to import it to PhysicsOverflow, if it does not get reopend ...
Nov 2, 2016 11:41
physics.stackexchange.com/q/286601/2751 and, by the infamous way too agressive deletion skript the SE company has installed on the whole network, even deleted really makes me cringe.
Nov 2, 2016 11:39
@rob the fact that such and similar questions get closed
Oct 22, 2016 14:27
Ok, but as I understand this, valuable information can still get lost, if for example to the question or answer on-topic comment threads with < 15 messages are moved to chat ....?
Oct 22, 2016 14:21
Yes, thinking about it I am not 100% sure if chat rooms associated with specific questions or answers always get deleted too after a certain time of inactivity (?) .
Oct 22, 2016 14:19
yes, the infamomous hot list can have harmful effects and and sometimes comment threads do need to be moved /cleaned up ...
Oct 22, 2016 14:15
@rob so I like your rather relaxed attitude, but unfortunately it seems we will always the minority on this site. Also, moving comments to chat is as I understand it equivalent to distroying them in the long-run, in addition to the fact that in chat almost nobody will care to read them. Inactive chat rooms get automatically frozen and subsequently (also automatically) deleted by the SE software ...
Oct 22, 2016 14:07
In addition, letting polite comments that thank for help obtained stand make the community look friendly and welcoming, whereas flagging and even deleting them always seems rude to me personally. MathOverflow and also we on PhysicsOverflow do not prevent such friendly interactions among members of the community, neither do they on Mathematics SE ...
Oct 22, 2016 14:02
@rob generally I often tend to disagree with blindly implementing SE dogma, for example concerning the comments, to strictly to academic discussions as Danu suggests for example here chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/33070768#33070768. For example MathOverflow and also Math SE adobt the nicely relaxed attitude to leave comments that do contain useful information alone.
Oct 20, 2016 13:29
@rob thanks for reopening this question physics.stackexchange.com/posts/287449/revisions, this is an example of what I mean when saying that higher-level technical questions about advanced topics should not get closed. In the past I often strongly disagreed with David Z who has a tendency to unilateraly close such and other questions (that are not obviously crap) without waiting for any community input ...
Oct 17, 2016 09:07
Best wishes and see you
Oct 17, 2016 09:06
My hope is that your wise conception and seemingly relaxed attitude to the moderation would help to balance these things a bit, such that the site will become again a bit more welcoming to people who are interested in learning theoretical physics at a technical mathematical (conversely to equation free conceptual) level again in the future.
Oct 17, 2016 08:59
Renaming the close reason will not change the fact that the current community and policies obviously prefer equation free purely conceptual questions and tend to discourage technical questions that include the maths of the topic.
Oct 17, 2016 08:52
Thanks again for the encouragement @rob; What seriously discourages me personally from posting on Physics SE these days is that, even though maybe I initially helped kicking off the homework issue, is the increasing tendency to tag as and close even very advanced (up to research-level!) technical theoretical physics questions that contain LaTex as homework or too mathematical.
Oct 16, 2016 17:52
Cheers, Dilaton
Oct 16, 2016 17:52
At times I do wish I were still able to post things on Physics SE in the same
way as some (even high rep) members of MathOverflow say, that they turn to Mathematics SE, if they are unsure if their questions (outside their
specialization for example) are up to snuff for MO.
Oct 16, 2016 17:50
However, due to the rather "turbulent" start of the relationship between the two
communities, I know that this will take a rather long time and that it would
need a lot of tact and sensitivity from both sides, if it is even possible at all.
Oct 16, 2016 17:49
Since quite some time, one of my greatest wishes would be to reduce the tension between Physics SE and PhysicsOverflow, such that in the long run the two
communities can settle down to maintain an as reasonable, respectful, and
professional relationship as it exists between Mathematics SE and MathOverflow.
Oct 16, 2016 17:48
I have seen the discussion about the removed nominations and the justifications,
but in my honest personal opinion (maybe due to my being brought up in a
country with direct democracy) in true democratic elections it should
exclusively be the community who decides who they want (or do not want) to be elected by their votes (instead of an external "higher instance" pre-filtering the
candidates). Marcel would have been my third choice (after you first and second
Alfred Centaury) had he not been taken out before the start of the voting...
Oct 16, 2016 17:45
Concerning ACuriousMind, I guess my opinion is known, but we will see
if, for example, he holds his promise to keep his fingers a bit farther
away from the close button than he did before becoming a moderator.
Oct 16, 2016 17:44
Hi @rob, many thanks for the kind invitation and nice words.
I am really happy that you got elected and I think this is a very good thing for
the site, congratulations !

Apr 9, 2016 16:29
@quid ok ;-)
