It's incorrect because it isn't accurate for the people using the system. It doesn't matter what Google says is the definition, or what a dictionary says, or anything other than the User. We are UX practitioners, we need to ensure our solutions are fit for use by those users. Limiting it to just Male and Female does not.
Mar 29, 2017 05:54
It's not that limiting it to 2 genders is offensive to some, it's that it's incorrect. It's like having a 'What is your race: White or Black' field.

@smci I would disagree really. Sure, some things are appropriate in one workplace that aren't appropriate in another, but the whole concept of NSFW is to provide a general concept, not specifics to situations. So just as it is (presumably) 'safe' to have pornography in the PornHub office it doesn't mean it still shouldn't be tagged NSFW. This question is about the broader meaning of NSFW, not specific situations.

Dec 20, 2016 12:02
@AnkitSharma It might depend on time of day. I'll try later today on some other sites and see if I get the moon one there.
Dec 20, 2016 11:52
Maybe you can get the sun on one site and the moon on another?
Dec 20, 2016 11:44
The hats have always been a bit 'loose' with the accuracy of date-based ones. They have always triggered pretty early for ones explicitly based around a particular day.
Dec 20, 2016 11:43
I got the Sun one. It's GMT here (11:45am)
Dec 20, 2016 11:43
@Randal'Thor That reflects my experience. Just upvoted a question and answered it and got the hat. That's the onlyt actions I've done on that site.

Only got the hat on a site I took some actions on though. But I've done loads of things on that site so could be anything that triggers it.

I'm in GMT and got the WITW hat.

Details from last years one here: blog.stackoverflow.com/2014/12/winter-bash-2014
Dec 8, 2015 11:55
Winter Bash time at StackExchange. I assume everyone is happy for us to participate again? Because unless there's overwhelmingly good reasons not to, we'll be doing it this time too.
Jul 29, 2015 14:03
Someone deleted it.

@HarshitChoudhary See the list of Privileges: ux.stackexchange.com/help/privileges you need 3,000 reputation to cast close votes.
Jul 14, 2015 11:01
@Rayraegah Cheers. Thankfully the all powerful StackExchange spamram spotted him and blocked him from submitting any more, but I've taken care of him now and burned him up.
Jun 28, 2015 09:17
Also, I'd disagree with some of this. As a UX designer I am just as focused on client needs/requirements as I am on user ones.
Jun 28, 2015 09:16
I guess that one of the 'strenghts' isn't spelling.

Q: Do we need to add an additional close reason for Shopping Request questions?

JonWThis is sort of a follow up to this question from a while ago: New custom close reason for shopping questions However, that question took a bit of a turn into whether or not we replace any of our existing ones with a shopping request one. However my suggest is different. Should we add an addit...

Still getting frequent Shopping Request questions here. What are peoples thoughts on this:
May 1, 2015 08:19
@ZachSaucier It goes through phases in here. It's in a quiet phase at the moment, I think!
Apr 30, 2015 16:10
@plainclothes Often I put big spikes in views down to a posting on HackerNews - but this wasn't linked to from there.
Apr 27, 2015 12:36
Yeah good. You?
Apr 15, 2015 15:36
Woo! trumpet call! Drum roll! New user profiles pages are now live!
Apr 11, 2015 07:20
@Siva-Dev-Wizard I've reverted it from a community wiki for you. In future the best way to contact moderators for such things is to flag the post itself and leave a message for the moderators that way. Otherwise we may miss it.
Apr 9, 2015 18:21
No worries. There are lots of clever stuff the site(s) do behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly. Most of it only impacts StackOverflow because it is such a massive and popular site, but that tech still filters down to the smaller sites such as ours, so the whole SE network benefits.

Q: Should Spam posts be edited?

Mad ScientistI noticed that the posts of the recent spam surge on AskUbuntu were all edited by community members into something like EDITED - REMOVED SPAM ANSWER or similar. While I understand why the users have done this and I too don't want to leave the spam content visible for longer than absolutely...

Apr 9, 2015 17:45
The spam detectors are quite smart so will pick up these links eventually, so removing links isn't really a bad thing, but it's just better for the site as a whole to just leave them and let the spam flags take care of the post instead.
Apr 9, 2015 17:44
@tohster The trouble with removing the link itself is that there are various stackexchange spam monitors that check the sites for spam flags and any associated links. If a post is deleted that doesn't actually have a link in it then that's less ammunition for the spam blockers to use. So while removing spam might stop clickthroughs on that particular post it means the link itself is more likely to get reposted again.
Apr 9, 2015 08:32
For reference: If you see a spam post then please don't edit out the spam link as it makes it harder for mods / SE team to track the spam links. Just flag them as spam, downvote and move on.
Apr 2, 2015 08:26
And here's a blog post about it, and some of the co-ordinated 'raids' that it seemed to encourage: jericson.github.io/2015/03/31/yolks_on_us.html
Apr 2, 2015 08:26
@BenBrocka I dunno, seems plenty of people were playing it on UX. We came in 8th out of over 100 SE sites.
Mar 23, 2015 13:47
That is surprisingly apt, considering the conversations we've been having in our office today.
Mar 21, 2015 09:24
@BenBrocka There is none. Other than manually typing in 'Graphic Design' in the migrate box.

Q: Let’s improve our site navigation

@Mitch Yup, that's one of my issues with such questions. Unless it can be traced back to a book that coined the phrase or something it'll just be speculation.
Mar 14, 2015 16:59
its all just design though.

Unless I've been pronouncing it wrong my whole career.
Mar 14, 2015 16:41
I guess we'll leave it on our site then. Feel free to jump in and leave your own answers though. (Surely they'll be better than the answer that states 'UX is an ACRONYM' - which is both wrong and not relevant.)
Mar 14, 2015 16:39
But I wondered if there was any origin for such usage.
Mar 14, 2015 16:39
That is my guess too
Mar 14, 2015 16:39
It strikes me as similar to 'Why do we appreviate things to XL for Extra Large, and 'FX for Foreign Exchange'. I thought it's something that may have been covered here.

Q: Why do we say UX for User Experience rather than UE?

PhillipWThe term User Experience goes back to Don Norman sometime in the early 90s. But where did the abbreviation UX, rather than UE, come from? I'm guessing that it was influenced by the release of Windows XP ("short for Experience") which came out in late 2001). I came across a copy of the UPA Maga...

Hello people. Just dropping in from UX.SE. We have this question which is I think may be suited to here, or if not you may already have one we can refer to (although I can't find one). Thoughts?
