In this example, Eve might be malicious or more likely clumsy. Who dropped the OrderEntry table? WTF guys?!

Today I learned there's a feeding responsibility matrix. Man, between Erica and AGN, these ladies could write a book.

@HK-51 I don't understand why you'd let someone use their phone at all during a 10 minute standup meeting. If what someone says is so unimportant that someone else can just ignore it, they should simply not say that and move on with the standup faster. These aren't angsty teens you have working for you, they can put their dopamine boxes down for 10 minutes. Source: former angsty teen still addicted to his dopamine box.
Aug 4, 2022 08:24
What have you tried already? I don't see why a "Hey Alex, please stop texting during our standup." is an issue. After all, you're not just this person's manager - you're the one HIRING this person's manager. You should not need to justify such an obviously professional request.

@gnasher729 In tech we call that garbage in, garbage out. Why would you expect an honest answer to a dishonest question (which, being illegal, certainly is!)

@J... That's ridiculous. Everything that involves humans has something to do with personal feelings and insecurities. Pretending it doesn't just makes someone a jerk.

This study has huge "If we stop testing for Covid, our numbers will go down, and we want lower numbers" vibes.

Mar 29, 2021 21:22
To me, the worst thing here is that the manager heard someone say "Your employees didn't wake up in the middle of the night to help us!" and he didn't have your back. My manager used to describe his job as a profession "BS umbrella" where he shielded us from all the goings-on and politics so we could get work done. Find yourself a manager who will go to bat for you!!

Mar 26, 2021 11:29
Have you considered the company is paying for it more as a tech-related team-building exercise and not actually about the conference talks?

Mar 21, 2021 14:15
I tell my staff "Act as if there's an accountant looking over your shoulder every time you deal with money - because they sure as hell are looking over mine!"

@Meower68 The fact that they didn't call for a roll call vote shows the nays didn't really care about holding their counterparts to account.

@PyRulez There is more to security than just privacy.

Nov 29, 2020 20:43
@Tim the German legislature did provide exemptions for in-person meetings for Work Council to be conducted over video conference. It's not the same, but there is still precedent for taking reasonable measures to stop the spread of coronavirus by taking the digital. When coupled with the in-person handoff and documentation thereof, there is little doubt that it will be accepted in court if challenged.

Sep 25, 2020 22:29
@IñakiViggers That is a technically accurate clarification. But I believe DavidZ means "Okay that's the offer, but now it has to be drawn up in a contract" which doesn't reflect reality.
Sep 25, 2020 22:29
@DavidZ An offer IS a contract. I cannot fathom drawing a distinction between the two.

@BruceWayne Every listing I found in the first dozen or so said CNO approved insignia - nicknames are not approved but if they are depicted in the insignia then obviously that has to be approved. history.navy.mil/content/dam/nhhc/research/histories/…

I assume this person is already the highest paid person on the team, since you say he's the most productive. How much more productive is he than the second highest person on the team? And what is their ratio of the productivity? If he's pumping out 50 or 75% more productivity for only 20% more salary, well, can you blame him? Run the numbers on that and see how it plays out.

Jun 15, 2020 11:51
@CaptainEmacs I disagree - for whatever reason they didn't ask for this quarantine. Maybe it didn't occur to them. But the truth is this whole pandemic is rather inconvenient for both people and employers. This came up and has to be dealt with. If someone neglected to say this before, like, deal with it the same way you would if the person was in the hospital for that time. And if you're not prepared for that as an employer, well that's really on you, not the employee.
Jun 15, 2020 11:51
@CaptainEmacs People need emotional/mental resets even MORE in the midst of a global pandemic. I don't see how it's relevant.

As an antique dealer by trade, I've never heard of pot to describe something glass, nor would I expect a jar to be at shorter than it is wide, although personally I've never seen one. It's entirely possible the word I'm looking for doesn't exist because it seems a bit of a novelty, really.

Apr 30, 2020 12:34
@rob This just reinforces that you can't trust those pesky scientists - believe what you see on TV - I mean, would GI Joe lie to you? He's literally a hero.

Apr 22, 2020 20:20
Assuming your professor has even an ounce of academic integrity, they will have no issues finding a reasonable accommodation especially considering the circumstances. Sometimes they're managed by TAs who couldn't give a hoot, but usually someone notices when top students do poorly and struggling students do spectacular, and even more so when it's brought to their attention ahead of time.

Apr 21, 2020 12:17
@ThoriumBR Because users suck at writing SQL queries, especially ones that don't slow down the database, and they really don't WANT to log into a SQL database - they want a point and click web app for convenience. It's really a matter of performance and preference.
Apr 21, 2020 12:17
@ThoriumBR How is "It only takes one user with elevated privileges" any different in a database than it is in a webapp? Have you seen how swiss chesse the security is in most webapps in all the application code?
Apr 21, 2020 12:17
"One of the most common vulnerabilities on web applications is SQL Injection, and you are giving a SQL console to your users." - What does this even mean? SQL injection is a problem of poorly coded web servers. If there was database level security in place, SQL injection becomes entirely a non-issue. This whole answer reaches the proper conclusion for entirely the wrong reasons.

Worst that happens is you get a 30% raise, oh darn.

Jan 13, 2020 07:35
@UKMonkey To be clear, you feel it's rubbish to ask someone for a transcript 2 years removed? Or you are simply supporting OP's claim where they say they feel it is not relevant.

Jan 8, 2020 18:55
@BoatyMcboatface The cost of applying to 30-40 schools is more than a year's tuition at a darned good institution. If you have a list of even 10 institutions you're applying to, and you're thinking you might not even make it to the tenth one on your list, well that should be the top of your list, not the bottom...

Dec 10, 2019 17:22
This answer is much more polite than I would have been. I'm certainly an an-cap and pro-worker hippie kinda dude, but behavior like this is why "the man" justifies treating workers so poorly.

To be clear, it would be the most valuable machine in the world and the government would be controlling access to it very, very tightly.

Oct 23, 2019 12:16
What do your alpha testers say about it? I mean, if you're this close to release, you have had alpha testers try it out right? RIGHT?

Sep 30, 2019 01:48
@PatW. Is there precident establishing the difference between "intentional action with unintentional death" versus "unintentional action with death"?
Sep 30, 2019 01:48
@phoog not necessarily - federal law still applies in a lot of cases that seem like it might be state law. Mailboxes come to mind. Peek in your neighbor's mailbox? Federal supermax, you criminal scum!

Sep 28, 2019 14:33
@sgf It seems to answer it quite well in the first sentence of the second paragraph. The investigation was stalled or abandoned already. You can't stop something that is already stopped. In fact, it's surmised that the replacement official was more likely to reinstate the case than Shokin. Thus, Biden's actions were not game theory optimal if his objective was to protect his son's company.

Sep 27, 2019 17:11
@computercarguy As a former dishwasher, former software engineer, and current CFO, your assertion of importance is very misguided and is at the root of many of societal issues today.

Sep 27, 2019 16:53
Not only is this behavior disgusting toward the candidate, let's not forget it's also a massive waste of their time to take a senior engineer and have them spend time reviewing materials, prepping for an interview, performing the interview, compiling notes, etc. An hour interview could easily take two hours of this engineers time and... for what?

Sep 23, 2019 14:02
@Stobor Absolutely. It would not be the first time someone has threatened to sue and literally never even picked up the phone.
Sep 23, 2019 14:02
Friendly reminder that if they are getting lawyers, you should either get a lawyer or comply with their demands. They have the cashflow to sue you to oblivion if they so choose, so if you're going to deny their requests you really need to have legal representation of your own.

Sep 2, 2019 14:31
The second point really should be the first! Towards the end of the day, I tend to look at the to-do list I made in the morning/last night. Usually, there's a small item that keeps getting bumped.

@Sean Perhaps best to remind anyone that might be opening a door that would sink the plane to not open said door.

Apr 4, 2019 22:56
@jpmc26 I'm forced to participate in a wealth driven society, so I do. Wealthy people fundamentally and deliberately exploit people who work for them by taking their surplus value simply because they happened to have wealth in the first place. Economic disparity hurts everyone across all borders. It is much more than you can contain in a SE comment, but the idea that one has "earned" 1,000 times another is simply unfathomable. Unfortunately, we put our kids in econ classes in school which are little more than capitalist propaganda, so they simply accept that's how things are supposed to be.
Apr 4, 2019 22:56
@Kai "No one is saying no one should be wealthy." Many of us say no one should be wealthy. Wealth and capitalism are diseases.

Mar 27, 2019 20:35
What steps have you taken to make it clear to the person so far? I mean, chances are they know overseas people (in this case, you're the overseas person to them) have a hard time understanding them.

Mar 26, 2019 22:45
I think your only option is to get into management, and make your biggest selling point a balanced approach somewhere between hands-off and hands-on.

Mar 19, 2019 13:51
This is a rant disguised as a question. It sucks what happened here, but 95% of this (I read the whole thing) is unnecessary to ask the question.

Mar 14, 2019 21:45
@DavidS Taxes are not giving because taxes are not optional. Taxes are the simply a "cost of doing business" for being in a society capable of supporting large amounts of people, that way we aren't stuck hunting and gathering for 95% of our living days and can advance our technology and humanities.
Mar 14, 2019 12:49
@jpmc26 Sure, I can see that. I just disagree that it should be put on a pedestal different than any other discretionary spending. There's money you're obligated to pay and money you're not obligated to pay. Inventing a third category, money you've arbitrarily obligated yourself to pay is highly unnecessary. Why isn't there an obligation to get yourself a hobby to meet people? Why not an obligation to take yourself to the spa to relax? Simply put, budgeting for giving literally ahead of your actual obligations is an antiquated relic of religion that we can safely dispense with.
