Enjoy the holidays everyone! Fingers crossed for a less interesting 2025 ey? :)
Nov 6, 2022 16:53
@Kilisi That's pretty amazing! At least for my part the "don't try at home" advice isn't really required. 🤣
Sep 23, 2022 16:15
@Kilisi Oh yeah, if you're starting with the fibres from scratch that must be an immense operation. Good to see traditions like those still being kept alive.
Sep 22, 2022 19:15
@Kilisi Damn, that's an impressive look. Couldn't say if I like the dress or the club more. I imagine the latter is also hand-made and might have been just as much work?
Sep 14, 2022 18:40
@dtn Hah, not sure if a psychologist is called for here. Not sure if I used the term wrong but typically universities will have people around who can speak to post-education employment opportunities and otherwise be a sounding board for people looking to create their own curriculum. Those are good people to talk to as long as you take their advice with a grain of salt.
Sep 12, 2022 19:38
But overall I'd say those are topics to take to your college's equivalent of a guidance counsellor.
Sep 12, 2022 19:38
@dtn Not sure this is the best audience to ask since that seems very highly theoretical to me. If you're intend on becoming a sort of Homo Universalis of Computer Science I guess that's a solid start. But you'd get the "wildly overqualified" label attached to your resume for most "regular" jobs. Not an issue if you're going into academia I guess.
Sep 12, 2022 19:36
Kept busy with both work and home renovations taking up a god-awful amount of time and energy but beats boredom I guess. ;)
Sep 12, 2022 19:35
@AIQ Hehe, doing well, hope everyone here is too. :)
Apr 19, 2022 21:14
There's several others in that vein that hit HNQ and we've mostly kept the posts alone since they still had decent answers.
Apr 19, 2022 21:13
The real answer is "within the parameters of your scenario and position, nothing". But of course that's not what usually happens with questions like this.
Apr 19, 2022 21:13
The general pattern for most of these is setting up some kind of unrealistic scenario then still asking for an approach such as "IT won't do their job and we can't do anything about it, what do we do?"
Apr 19, 2022 21:12
@zmike That's the one yes.
Apr 19, 2022 20:46
FYI, you might notice some clean-up of posts and users. Got some trolls straying out from under their bridge it seems. :)
Apr 15, 2022 20:02
But YMMV indeed. :)
Apr 15, 2022 20:02
There's a large time investment and while some firms are good and worth using, it's exceedingly hard to guess that without investing the time first.
Apr 15, 2022 20:02
@RoryAlsop If you're talking multiple placements I assume you're doing shorter term contracting gigs. There is more of an added value with recruiters then if you don't want to source your own leads. For people in regular employment it usually, though not always of course doesn't make much sense to invest too much time into these kinds of recruiters.
Apr 15, 2022 06:43
(Top positions in the Cx suite of major firms are an exception to this, they do work with very specialised recruiters. But you'd probably know if that were the case. :))
Apr 15, 2022 06:42
If you're job searching just do that normally, it's still your best bet to find a good job for most people.
Apr 15, 2022 06:42
There's little value in trying to find a recruiter, you're way too likely to come across the wrong type that way
Apr 15, 2022 06:42
The main take-away is that good recruiters will approach you and that you should learn how to recognise them (tailored message, interesting leads, ...).
Apr 15, 2022 06:41
@zmike There's no point in trying to find good recruiters. Though maybe put a post about this on main (or check if we have something already).
Apr 13, 2022 12:56
And congratulations on the new job!
Apr 13, 2022 12:56
@AIQ Haha, I still am. Sometimes. :) Started a new job in Jan so not much time for things here.
Apr 13, 2022 09:14
Anyone who wants to meet up first and do an entire assessment to "get you in the system" is just a waste of time I've found. Those are almost placement agencies and I have no time for that nonsense. :)
Apr 13, 2022 09:14
Anyone who's pushy or taking a volume-based approach you just ignore. People who craft a custom message or reach out for a specific job are sometimes worth talking to.
Apr 13, 2022 09:13
@zmike I've worked with three or four who have been excellent. Two got me a job offer, one I accepted. :) Over the course of maybe 4 years now. A decent recruiter will connect you to jobs you didn't even know existed. YMMV depending on what you're after. If you're looking to join a B4 consultancy there's no point in using a recruiter. But if you're after niche firms or industry jobs that's very different.

But I thought on Workplace it would always take us straight to this room?
Jan 5, 2022 19:12
> [chat] – link to the current site's chat site (chat.stackoverflow.com for SO, chat.meta.stackexchange.com for Meta SE, chat.stackexchange.com everywhere else, that last one showing a list of active rooms from the referring site), the link text being "{site name} Chat".

Interestingly it says:

balphaMost of these now work. My comment below has the following markdown source: On [main], you are expected to write proper English (as advertised on [english.se]), but here on [meta.se] it's more important to have freehand circles, so please [edit] your post, otherwise I'll have to flag you (see th...

@motosubatsu These things are always a PITA to look up on meta, found them again now, they're called "magic links"
Jan 4, 2022 22:08
I'm placing this on hold since you appear to be asking for resume advice which is off-topic here. Consider asking for this kind of help in The Workplace Chat instead. See more on meta here and hereLilienthal ♦ 2 mins ago
Jan 4, 2022 22:08
General check: is anyone else being taken to the chatroom overview page instead of this room when following the [chat] comment link?
Jan 4, 2022 22:07
Jk of course, but I do know what you mean.
Jan 4, 2022 22:07
@Kilisi Glad you have such a high opinion of yourself! :D
Nov 29, 2021 21:58
Interesting topic though.
Nov 29, 2021 21:58
So you'd want to be more subtle than that.
Nov 29, 2021 21:58
It risks coming across as overly rigid. Even if it's sensible to not want 80 hour weeks, you might run across companies who occasionally have a 45-hour week and think you might balk at that and drop you from consideration.
Nov 29, 2021 21:57
Reason it should be a question is that it's a complex topic and answer.
Nov 29, 2021 21:57
@zmike Somewhat subjective but provided you word it well I'd say it's answerable. It ties into those questions you ask but it's distinct. "Can I insist on a healthy work-life balance before accepting an offer?"would be an example.
Nov 29, 2021 21:55
IIRC a workplace advice blog I follow mentioned a very similar effect.
Nov 29, 2021 21:55
Leading to much less drama and much less input for us.
Nov 29, 2021 21:55
It's probably simpler though. Workplace interaction levels just plummeted in a matter of weeks and they have yet to fully recover. We got some WFH and "how do I handle the pandemic" questions to slightly make up for it but the overall level of interaction at work is just way lower.
Nov 29, 2021 21:54
@JoeStrazzere Hehe, I like that theory.

Dec 8, 2022 05:21
@james.garriss Very much agreed. Slides can certainly be abused but when used well they remove the need to spend large amounts of time just writing stuff down. If you need to go through a proof step-by-step you could add line-by-line animations (oh the horror) if you're desperate to replicate the old practices. [@]walkar: I was being facetious, but referring mostly to my expectation that nearly all teaching will be digital in the near future.
Dec 8, 2022 05:21
@walkar And then your facilities are finally upgraded with whiteboards/smartboards and all that practice will be for nothing.

At this risk of coming across as one those people with a blank stare: what exactly do you mean? How do you define "the ability to work with meaning in source code"? I assume this is related to your earlier question How can I find work in a new sub-field that I have invented for my profession? Are you asking that same question again here?
