@usul Each quark is an object that stores it's state. The universe actually spends most of it's time resolving pointer references from macroscopic entities down to subatomic particles in loops within loops that some say a man named Ezekiel actually saw.

@cdkMoose I am not the manager of these people, but the product is collaboratively owned software products. I am responsible in part for the customer satisfaction -- most often the people who I have disagreements with are on equal footing as me under the same management chain.
Nov 29, 2023 22:11
@AakashM Even in the software domain it may be a full-stop scenario. Ex: C Level says "I want full backend access to the system that is 100% pii and credit card data"; that's something in the software domain that is also in the safety domain.
Nov 29, 2023 22:11
@DarkCygnus Fortunately in the past I've had scenarios come to light from QA or other integrating teams before we go to prod, but the company could still benefit from shifting those concerns left to the planning/architecture/development stages.
Nov 29, 2023 22:11
@sf02 For the sake of this question assume they double down and don't really respond to the points raised. In the real world sometimes they agree and see things my way, sometimes they point out why A, B and C will not happen. Sometimes in the real world they fail to address point A B and C even when prompted multiple times.

@Ecnerwal I don't; just browsing. The question (from me) is entirely hypothetical -- I like my house too much to burn it down.

As an alternate angle to get your boss' support, you should bill your employer (probably by being "clocked in") while dealing with the result of these "pranks". Putting tape over someone's mouse pointer is a prank -- that can be undone in about 10 seconds. Dumping glitter all over your truck has actual monetary effects due to the time you have to spend vacuuming. Make sure your lead knows that you're charging them an extra hour of labor to vacuum out your truck.

Sep 20, 2023 20:20
Security issues aside -- Why not just configure your "security denied" page to tell them why they don't have access? Sending them a teams message to explain the issue when it could just be on the page that is rendered in the browser. If there is actual coaching (say a problem employee triggers these actions regularly) then maybe a face to face meeting needs to get setup, but an automated message is just going to be ignored after the second or third time anyway.

This question seems to make an assumption that the only time in which one can cause harm to others is after their death. Why should a perfectly-selfish individual only take actions which harm others after the individual has died? This question frames the idea of a post-death reward/punishment for the soul motivator for altruism/cruelty/selfishness. If such a person existed it wouldn't be hard at all to imagine them causing mass suffering during their lifetime and not caring just as they would not care after their death.

Hey, ya'll take questions that don't really fit the "has to be useful to more than just you" requirement that the main site requires?

If so, what are your thoughts on asking an upper management person who's not in your reporting chain for (internal to the company) career switching advice? I know in general you shouldn't ask people in your management chain because their interested in (generally) keeping you in the management chain, but I'm thinking about asking someone with whom I have a good relationship who has moved elsewhere.
Jun 27, 2017 16:57
At the same time, an individual could automate his job function, yet he is expected to then inform his boss, take on more work to fill the "time" he is paid for, or even risk being replaced by his own automation. We are paying ford for a car, not the amount time they spent making a car. Why is Ford paying an individual for his time, not the product of whatever time he spends?

Quick question -- are implementation questions with psuedo code on topic for CR? Really it's more of an algorithm/implimentation review.

Bummer -- but I think I kind of have it. I was hoping to prove to a colleague "yes this is possible in a human timeframe". Thank you though!

Before I post a question -- are "How would I calculate the time complexity of this" type questions on topic for code review?

@RossPresser Perfect. The less sense a conspiracy theory sense makes the more the general conspiracy theory loving segment of the populace embraces it. Also, I hate how correct the answer is.

Hey, question for those more familiar with cars than I am. Does "GM Mercon" or "Ford Dexron" make any sense at all? It's what's on the bottle of valvoline transmission fluid my FIL bought for his truck, and I'm just curious.
Nov 20, 2018 16:27
Cool, thanks for the advice!
Nov 20, 2018 16:14
Sounds about what I thought. So if I'm looking to replace my existing set (they're garbage, I can only assume 1/3 the internal gearing is stripped) I should probably go with fixed-head, and only get flex if I'm feeling fancy?
Nov 20, 2018 16:09
I can't really ask this on the site so I thought I'd drop it here, anyone have strong opinions on flex-head ratchets? I'm thinking about getting a set of extending flex-head to replace the crappy stanly set I've had since my teens; but I don't want to buy them and figure out I can't put much torque on them due to the flex-head.

I came in here to ask a question that didn't really fit on the main site, but my god your people's starred messages are a gold mine.

Jul 3, 2019 03:43
@dn3s No, because it provides context and framing for the question (You'll not several of the highly upvoted answers frame their answers in that context as well). That aside, I would be strongly willing to bet the majority of the computer using population does not know what stdout and stderr is.

I would recommend OP look at the layout of a new office. This is a veritable bucket of red flags ranging from not knowing anything about technology to horrible micromanagement practices.

Dec 12, 2018 19:54
It could also be noted that color scheme could play an important role -- the Black-Swastika-in-a-white-circle-on-a-red-field screams Nazi at the top of it's lungs. I don't know personally how swastikas in India are displayed, but a quick google image search shows that most of them are gold on a red field, which might be an early indicated that this is in fact not a Nazi emblem.

Aug 30, 2018 18:23
I'm looking at the chart you provided and everything outside of the SRGB appears to be either a greenish-blue or a purple with very little variance. Does that tell me that my monitor is incapable of displaying those colors?

Aug 29, 2018 00:22
Hi Kyle -- I'd strongly consider if you are serious about this (and maybe you are, who am I to tell?) Consider looking for a gently used Jeep that is a year or more old. This will knock several thousand (maybe 10k) off the price. A used JK (sorry, I don't know the jeep model nomenclature) is 30k, which is 13k less than a new one. After that I'd really caution you to not do this. You're 17 and talking about making a massive purchase, but in the next ten years you're going to have to flush a ton of money down the toilet for college, moving, moving again, etc, having a huge payment won't help

Mar 2, 2018 17:21
So I'm building a test bench power supply from an old PC PSU -- I want to be able to switch a few four pin molex connectors independently (that is, two different connectors, with two different switches). They have a 12v line and a 5v line that I do not want to short together. I could buy a SPDT switch for this purpose, but am lazy and have a few SPST switches. Is there any reason I couldn't just route the two ground wires coming from these plugs to the switch?

Not enough of a question for the stack, but does anyone know what specifically a fan for garage ventilation is called? Like if I wanted to mount a fan near the ceiling that blows the hot air outside while cooler air comes in from lower vents? I know they make fans for kitchen hoods or bathrooms, and I might be able to use one, but if there is a more appropriate solution that'd be nice.

As my car cools down in the summer, the extra heat gets trapped in my garage and it gets *unbearable*

Well, I'm having trouble explaining programming concepts to a friend. The friend is in data science, but he's having to learn python to further his career, and going to an actual class isn't an option for him. Are questions on how to explain programming concepts like the differences between an array vs a list to someone who doesn't really grok the concept of how storage space works on topic on this site?

Jun 29, 2017 17:48

Jun 28, 2017 11:36
I'm glad you liked it! I suppose if you wanted to be nice, you could set the library to also take a backup of the students database and email it to them. :)
Jun 28, 2017 11:36
What if you were to do a two part assignment? Give them a library through which to route their sql queries and make this library vulnerable to sql injection. Have them come in and show you their project using that library, and then in the middle of the demo, wipe their database using the libraries vulnerability. Tell them not to worry about it, you will address it in the next lecture and in the next lecture, tell the class about injection. In the second part, give them the source to the library, and have them fix the injection. This also teaches them to be concerned about libraries they use.
