Discussion over whether scroll-use rules in 5E would require a...

It doesn't say a higher level than you can normally prepare. It says a higher level than you can normally cast.
Jan 12, 2023 19:37
You can do this normally on any day. You don't require any special scrolls, blessing, equipment or anything. It's an inherent ability of your character. It is normal. You can normally cast level 5 spells.
Jan 12, 2023 19:36
You choose the spells you "know" and "prepare". As a single class cleric, with one level in cleric, you can know and prepare Cure Wounds, as that is a spell with a base level of 1. It is a level 1 spell.

Completely separately from knowing or preparing the spell, you can cast it using whatever spell slots you have. If you have a level 5 spell slot due to being multiclassed, then you can cast the spell at level 5. You have cast a level 5 spell. You are able to cast level 5 spells.
Jan 10, 2023 17:41
For 1 and 2 (the second 1 and 2), I feel like you're making up terminology. If a spell is level 5 when you cast it, it is a level 5 spell, and you can cast level 5 spells. This is very simple. I don't know why you're trying to complicate it.

You seem to be reading the text as if there are extra words in it, which are not there. Some of the other answers are doing the same thing.

This answer seems to assume they're going to hit the crowd at full speed and run people over. The question clearly says "slowly push through a crowd". I'm imagining the car going 2 miles an hour. Anybody can get out of the way in that situation. They would have to try to get run over.

This is a nice criticism of the system, but it doesn't seem to actually answer the question that was asked.

We were having a good discussion for a minute there, referring to meta questions and such. It was going well. Then you accused me of strawmanning and things went off the rails. Let's just drop it for now.
Mar 17, 2017 22:47
@Frank I wasn't going to bother continuing this particular discussion, but you sound offended and that's not my intent. I don't want you to walk away angry. I wouldn't bother discussing anything with you if I didn't think you're trying to improve site health. I'm not questioning your intentions. I know we've been over this. I'm questioning your conclusions, and your reasons for them.
Mar 17, 2017 16:52
I was really just trying to shut down the debate in comments by referring to a meta where you already stated your position and it was rejected, but I should've known better. I'm sure we'll have this discussion again. Until next time, Frank.
Mar 17, 2017 16:52
@Frank It's not a strawman. We're usually debating whether a question should be closed, where I think it's fine to stay open, and you think it should be closed. It seems to me you want them closed because of personal preferences, rather than site policies. That's the definition of using a close vote as a super downvote. It shouldn't be surprising that I state my position when we're having a discussion.
Mar 16, 2017 23:59
I don't know which 'that' you're referring to.
Mar 16, 2017 23:58
Which one?
Mar 16, 2017 23:58
I think this is more like Gorilla vs Human than Gorilla vs Shark. There's an actual reason that the asker thinks the things are related, and it's not entirely unreasonable. The two games share a lot of gameplay mechanics, not crazy to think some of the lore might be similar as well. That being said, it's a pretty poor connection, and the bit about them moving in the shadows isn't even really true of the BoS most of the time.
Mar 16, 2017 23:56
@Frank That's how I read that meta. If you'd like to clarify or change the policy, get to work on that meta. I think that this type of close vote is based on the form of the question, not it's exact content. The fact that the links seem tenuous is a problem with the content, and a good reason to downvote. I would say that you're trying to use the close vote as a super downvote.
Mar 16, 2017 23:45
@Frank If there are no links at all, you can vote to close. If the links are poor and tenuous, down vote it.
Mar 16, 2017 23:45
@Frank That meta supports leaving this question open. All it asks for is that there be some connection between the games, that they are similar in some way, as explained by the asker. The asker here points out that they are in games made by Bethesda, that they are both called Brotherhoods, and that the asker perceives them to have similar traits (that bit about being in the shadows). It's not a good question, but it's nothing to close.
Mar 16, 2017 23:45
@Frank Feel free to create a meta about comparing games. I think you're going to get a similar response.
Mar 16, 2017 23:45
@Frank You've expressed your disdain for questions you think have "literally no utility" a number of times, and that attitude has been soundly and thoroughly rejected. It is not site policy, and we don't close questions for that reason.

Do you have any evidence to support the statement that "essentially every single moment of the lives of every person aboard any starship or space station is recorded and stored in perpetuity"? I've watched every Star Trek series and movie at least once, and TNG many times, and that doesn't sound right to me.

This is an interesting question that addresses a terminology problem I've encountered myself. My friends and I usually call this PvP, but we're not entirely comfortable with the term, since an AI is controlling the other player's stuff. If there's a term for this, I'd love to find out what it is.

Ah well, whatever. I'll just leave it for a while and see if people who show up later have a different reaction. That happens a lot.

Jan 12, 2017 21:07
I was honestly expecting the other native speakers would see my answer, be like yeah that is definitely what that word means, and we would quickly get a consensus answer. That doesn't seem to be happening, so maybe it's more ambiguous than I imagined.
Jan 12, 2017 21:06
I'm not an ELL, though
Jan 12, 2017 21:06
er, definite
Jan 12, 2017 21:06
It's an indefinite article, which would imply we know which foot, which could imply it has to be our own foot.
Jan 12, 2017 21:05
No, that seems like it might be a good angle of attack.
Jan 12, 2017 21:05
You're focusing on the usage of the word 'the'?
Jan 12, 2017 21:04
Because if there's a definitive dictionary entry that makes it quite clear, please point me to it.
Jan 12, 2017 21:04
So are you saying you think it IS easy, or isn't?
Jan 12, 2017 21:03
So, it's a question with an answer that isn't immediately obvious, that could possibly be answered by research. Isn't that what we want?
Jan 12, 2017 21:02
If there was only one possible opinion, there would be no need to ask. I would hold that opinion.
Jan 12, 2017 21:02
What?
Jan 12, 2017 21:02
@AndrewLeach If multiple opinions weren't possible, there wouldn't be any point in asking the question.
Jan 12, 2017 21:01
@AndrewLeach I attempted to rephrase the final question, but it seemed pretty objective to being with, so I didn't end up changing it much.
Jan 12, 2017 21:00
@AndrewLeach I was more trying to understand your assertion that the question was phrased in such a way that the answer had to be opinion based, coupled with your suggestion that I could edit it to make it more objective.
Jan 12, 2017 20:59
@AndrewLeach This is an actual problem that I face in that someone asked me the question, and I'd like to be clear on the meaning of the word. After the quote it looks like you're giving me an answer, which I fully agree with.
Jan 12, 2017 20:45
Hey @AndrewLeach, I'd genuinely like to understand what the apparent issue is with that question I posted about a severed leg. Would you mind discussing it in chat?

Aug 8, 2016 19:20
@Jashaszun If you're paid enough, as most developers are, then you are exempt from overtime laws. You're on salary, which is not hourly. You get paid to do a job, not to sit in a chair for a certain number of hours. Many employers take advantage of this and give their employees an unreasonable amount of work.

Jul 21, 2016 02:47
Comments and answers can easily point back to one post like this as a reference, as well.
Jul 21, 2016 02:46
Seems like it would be best to just answer each specific individual issue individually, and just link them as dupes if they're really the same manifestation of the issue.
Jul 21, 2016 02:46
But then if we write the question more broadly so that we don't need to edit it, then the question itself is way too broad.
Jul 21, 2016 02:45
But if we do that, then we have to edit the question whenever one gets closed as a dupe, which seems wrong.
Jul 21, 2016 02:45
It seems that if we're going to list specific issues, then any question that gets closed as a dupe should have that specific issue in the question.
Jul 21, 2016 02:44
I just reviewed a few different questions that people were voting to close as dupes of this question. I see the motivation, that the answer is basically the same for all these things, but I'm having structural difficulties with it as well.

Jul 20, 2016 23:03
@Dragonrage Just throwing some notes on here since I'm not going to be able to come up with an answer, but I have knowledge which may assist someone who tries to do so. If interpreted in hexadecimal, the sequence is 96A. The last 1010 is A.
Jul 20, 2016 23:03
@Robotnik Yeah, I agree. That might eventually be the answer.
Jul 20, 2016 23:03
If interpreted as a single number, the string is 2410. I don't know enough about Saints Row or the specific level to have any idea if these numbers matter.
Jul 20, 2016 23:03
@warrenwoodhouse There's an edit. This focuses on the important part of the question, and frames it in a way that is more clearly on-topic. The question isn't what that sequence represents in an abstract way, but how it relates to the game. This makes it on-topic for gaming. The picture is also a huge help, as the highlighted numbers and breakup into 3 4-digit strings may be significant.
